Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here we are at the start of May with warmer weather, more sunshine and everything getting green. All of this makes us want to spend more time out-of-doors, especially after the interminable winter we just experienced. It’s time for First Communions and Mother’s Day celebrations. It seems that there is a high school prom every weekend. May brings with it the promise of summer and the promise of the end to another school year.

I would like nothing more this spring than to have every single Mercy student pass every course and every exam. I hope that not one Mercy girl has to attend summer school. Is that possible? You bet it is! I was delighted with the results we had in the 3rd quarter. We have smart, capable girls who have dedicated and hardworking teachers and parents who value education and academic success. How does every student achieve success? We encourage the students to attend every opportunity for review that the teachers give them. That review starts now, not the night before the exam. You will find in this newsletter a chart that indicates scheduled review classes. I have encouraged teachers to send Edline messages regarding review and review classes will be posted on the website.

The temptations of May, the sunshine and warmth, can pull a student away from study and exam preparation but isn’t it better to put in the time now and enjoy all that July and August have to offer? Isn’t it better to give up some time in May instead of having to give up six weeks in July and August to repeat a course? You are paying a premium tuition for your daughter to receive her education from September to June. Why pay $300 a class to make up a course that, with a little extra effort, she could have passed in the first place?

Let us have a May filled with sunshine and studying, with warmth and review books. Let’s make our girls the most successful in the City of Buffalo. Our teachers are willing to do it! Are you? Is your daughter? Of course! Mercy Girls Succeed!

Sincerely,Paulette GaskePrincipal

Mount Mercy Academy has taken many steps to

enhance academic instruction and student achievement

this year. Goals have been set and action plans have

been implemented in this important endeavor to overall

improvement for our school. At the beginning of the

school year, MMA contracted with a highly-qualified

academic consultant who reviewed the curriculum,

policies, practices and a great deal of data to reach her

recommendations for moving ahead with academic

achievement. Focusing on five specific concerns,

Mount Mercy Academy has taken giant leaps in

accomplishing these specific objectives.

We intend that all MMA graduates earn a New york State regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. this means that

every student must be on the curriculum track for the

successful completion of nine NyS regents exams: three regents Math exams, two regents

Social Studies exams, two regents Science exams,

one comprehensive english regents exam and one

comprehensive language other than english regents

exam. to reach this major objective, the following

initiatives have been implemented:

•the MMA Counseling Department schedules

every student in the courses which lead to

obtaining the New york State regents Diploma

with Advanced Designation.

•MMA teachers provide all supports needed for

students to successfully complete these requirements.

•Communication with parents regarding the

expectations for students has increased.

•A title 1 Math teacher has been added to our

faculty for the purpose of providing additional

support to our Math students.

•Mandatory faculty attendance at in-services

providing new teaching methods and strategies.

•Students understand the standard expectation of

“strive for 85% or better” on all tests.

•New scanning equipment provides valuable reports

on student achievement or lack thereof made available

to MMA teachers. In turn, teachers are required to

submit report analysis along with an action plan for

improvement to the administration quarterly.

We have supported and enhanced our Math and Science programs. •the addition of a title 1 teacher has been invaluable

to the Math program.

•Students in danger of under-performing in both

Math and Science have been identified and placed

in tutoring classes.

•Math and Science teachers have attended NyS

workshops and conferences receiving new teaching

strategies and have been updated on developments

related to the new Common Core standards.

•A new software program, Castle learning, has

been made available for teachers to use to provide

regents styled questions to students for practice

and reinforcement.

We have made improvements in the Advanced Placement Program. MMA students historically

do well in AP courses and on AP exams. however, there is

always room for enhancement to any program.

•All MMA teachers will have attended AP teacher

workshops by the end of this school year.

•Support through additional online resources has been

provided to all AP students.

We will establish a school-wide program for SAt/ACt preparation. Currently, Atlas Prep runs

an SAt Prep course at MMA, and soon will develop a prep

course specifically designed for MMA juniors who will

take the PSAt, enhancing the possibilities for our students

to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

this year, 2 MMA students scored extremely high on the 2010

PSAt’s. these students will continue on in the competition for

a National Merit Scholarship. In addition, a current

MMA senior, because of her high score on the 2009 PSAt and

other academic achievements, will receive a special scholarship

from American City Business Journals, Inc. (parent company of

Business First) and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

For the Class of 2011, 44% will graduate with an overall average of 90 or better for their four years at Mount Mercy Academy.

We will expand and deepen collaborative efforts and partnerships with the local service, academic and

business communities of Western New york that exemplify

the Mission and Values of the Academy. our students have

benefitted from the many experiential opportunities afforded

them over the years. this year, MMA has partnered not only

with Catholic health, but with the Family Justice Center, which

has provided training for our students to become workshop

facilitators making junior high school students aware of appropriate

and inappropriate dating behaviors. empowering our young

women with the knowledge about dating violence is powerful

and necessary in today’s world. the school seeks additional

partnerships with organizations whose mission is harmonious

with that of MMA.

We hope you agree that as a premier high school for young

women sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Mount Mercy

Academy meets the needs of parents and students interested

in acquiring an education of the highest quality. the Admin-

istration and Faculty constantly seek to maintain a nurturing

atmosphere where Mercy students are called to be women of

faith, knowledge, integrity and compassion. the Mount Mercy

Academy experience fosters the academic, spiritual and social

growth and development of each student. At Mount Mercy

Academy, every student is encouraged, supported, and guided

towards fulfillment of her maximum potential and a future

leader, prepared to make outstanding contributions to her fam-

ily, church, community and career.

May is the month when we traditionally honor Mary, the Mother of God. From Scripture, we learn that she was a strong woman, a loving mother, and a faithful Jew. In addition, numerous legends and customs contribute to our appreciation of Mary. Non-Catholics are often under the mistaken assumption that Catholics commit idolatry in the “worship” of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While faithful Catholics give the highest veneration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, they never put her above God, put her as equal to God, put her in opposition to God, or confuse her with God. •Theterm“worship”asusedwith

regard to the Blessed Virgin should not to be confused with the worship paid to God alone. rather, it refers to the highest degree of veneration due a creature, as expressed by St. thomas Aquinas. •Certainexpressionsusedby

Catholics - such as Mary being the “whole reason for our hope” - do not imply that our hope is independent of Christ. rather, they acknowledge the fact that Christ made his coming to earth dependent upon the fiat of Mary - that, by the will of God, redemption would not be possible without the Virgin’s consent.•WhilefaithfulCatholicshavetrust

in Mary’s great intercessory power and her dispensing of graces, they do not believe Mary has any power on her own.•WhilefaithfulCatholicsacknowledge

the Blessed Virgin Mary as the greatest creature in all of God’s creation, they admit an infinite difference between her and God.

On April 14, 2011, 32 students and 15 chaperones flew to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the Heritage Music Festival. After hour-long rehearsals Thursday evening and Friday morning, the groups travelled by motor coach to Reinhardt College where three adjudicators provided written and taped comments for each performance. The festival awards were given at Six Flags Over Georgia on Saturday evening. Magic Belles Handbell Choir and Pure Magic Show Choir were both awarded gold medals for their performances, and Women’s Choir received a silver medal. While in Atlanta, the groups were able to spend time at the Georgia Renaissance Festival, the Atlanta Zoo, the Georgia Aquarium, the Coca-Cola Museum and an additional day at Six Flags Over Georgia. The three groups are directed by Fred Kirisits, and Pure Magic is choreographed by Justine Kish.

Because these high performers have shown such outstanding academic potential, they will be referred to two colleges in which they are especially interested. After being narrowed down from more than 50,000 entrants, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will award around 8,200 scholarships in 2012.

MMA Students Assist Mercy Hospital with Disaster DrillMercy Hospital wants to be prepared if disaster strikes. Catholic Health conducted an evacuation drill at its hospitals across the area in April including Mercy Hospital. The drill includes the activation of the hospital’s incident command system and is aimed at fine-tuning emergency evacuation plans. Mercy students volunteered to be patients in the hospital to assist with the drill.

This drill proved to be a valuable learning experience for the students. “I learned how all the different nurses and doctors work together. They are all individuals but they play important roles and all work on the same team. With effective communication, they are able to figure out a patient’s problem and do what is best,” states MMA sophomore Rachel Singer.
