Good Shepherd

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd. In

researching what makes a shepherd a few characteristics stand out. First

of all a shepherd knows his sheep and they know him and trust him. In

scripture we hear Jesus say, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them,

and they follow me.” Jesus calls us into a personal and intimate relation-

ship with Him that we may come to know and trust Him to guide our lives.

The shepherd understands what is best for his sheep. In Isaiah we read,

“He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his

arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with

young.” Jesus will guide us and provide for us everything we need to grow

in the faith. In every trial He is present to walk with us.

A shepherd cares for his sheep and protects them. He is willing to lay

down his life to save his sheep from enemies. Just as a shepherd protects

his sheep, with a willingness to lay down his own life, Jesus laid down His

life to save us from our enemy. Everytime we partake in the Sacrament of

Holy Eucharist we are reminded of Jesus as the Sacrificial lamb. As the

priest holds up the consecrated host, the body of Christ, and says,

“Behold, behold the lamb of God. behold Him who takes away the sins of

the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.”

This weekend, twenty-four students will receive this blessed Sacrament

for the first time. For the first time they will be able to join in the supper

of the Lamb and celebrate Christ’s willingness to die for His sheep. Pray

for these young people as they join us for this most blessed Sacrament

and experience for the first time the reception of body, blood, soul, and

divinity of Jesus. That they may grow closer to Jesus and come to know

their shepherd as He knows them.

Bishop’s Appeal Helps Those Who Grieve

The loss of a loved one is an experience that many of us can understand. For grieving families throughout our Dio-cese, Catholic Charities is a guiding light. Perhaps a per-son or family is dealing with the loss of a son or daughter, or maybe a mother or father. In many tragic situations, it is difficult to begin the grieving process without help. This is where you can make a difference. By giving to the Bishop’s Appeal, you help Catholic Chari-ties do the compassionate work of Jesus. Through your generosity, its counselors are able to reach out and help people to cope with loss when they do not know where else to turn. Please consider giving to the Bishop’s Ap-peal.

RELIGIOUS ED NEWS JESUS & COMPANY

AS A GROUP you proved once again that there is hardly anything that can stop you - or even slow you down when you have a specific duty to perform. That became evident at last week’s Youth Mass on April 15. Do you still remember it? It was a weekend of snow and more snow. As usual we held our breath and wondered how our numbers in atten-dance would suffer. And then as usual you rose to the chal-lenge and gathered together to show what you are made of. Yes, because of the bad weather there were a few holes in the sign-on-sheet-after all, bad roads were a major factor in those decisions. But those holes were quickly closed by a group that displayed a tremendous loyalty to JC and their church. That was adequately proven as all of you came for-ward to the altar steps. As a group you constantly are doing so many things that truly amaze us. BUT THERE IS one little point that still bugs us a bit. When you go up to the altar steps there are still a few that never make it up there. Don’t think that you need to be a “dues-paying” member of Jesus & Company to be up there (but that would really be nice if you were). If you are in school anywhere you are more than welcome to come forward with us. We hope you won’t force us to grab you by the ankles and drag you up there with us next month! WE JUST MADE a rather substantial contribution to a “nearby” worthy cause so now it becomes rather important and necessary to restart those Them and Us buckets and hear that rattle sound again in the Room. You are doing a fantastic job of staying ahead in our $19.00 a month en-deavor. We are still ahead by a couple of months and we pray that we can stay loyal and active in this one. Yup, you are earning admiration in yet another phase of your JC group life. IT SEEMS LIKE a lost idea to talk about our Mary Garden while we are surrounded by snow. But we have decided that we will have this year’s garden in the same spot as past years. If or when construction starts that may be the safest spot for a flower to boom. We are still exploring some future sites at this time however - so stay tuned. JESUS - it seems like when we really look we can see you in so many places.

MISSION STATEMENT As always, we entrust our program to Our Lady of Good Help, who asked Sister Adele, “teach them their catechism, how to sign themselves with the sign of the Cross, and how to approach the sacraments; this is what I wish you to do.” Let us ask her to help our parish RE program flourish in its’ mission which is: To provide an adequate spiritual and catechetical formation for our youth, so they may enter the world equipped with grace, knowledge, and a relation-ship with our heavenly Father.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Adults: Who is shepherding me? Whom have I shep-herded? Children: Who has been like a shepherd to me by his or her example?

Helping the Needy

Our daily goal as the St. Vincent de Paul All Saints Council of Good Shepherd Parish is to help the poor, forgotten and neglected. We could not do this charitable work without the generosity of YOU, our parishioners! Thank you!! We thank all those who helped us with the Holy Thursday col-lection, as well in the past. May God bless your efforts in helping us help others. As we have pointed out before, we are not included, nor do we receive any funds from the par-ish budget. So, any donations are always appreci-ated. There is a St. Vincent DePaul donation box located in the rear vestibule of the church on the East wall. For larger donations, please mail a check to the parish office, or drop it in the weekly collection. Make your checks payable to the St. Vincent DePaul Society-Chilton. Thank you all again!!!

GREEN THUMB SOCIETY The Green Thumb Society is a group of volunteers who every Spring transform our parish grounds into a colorful array of flowers and plants. If you are interested in donating to the purchase of these flowers and plants please place your donation in an envelope marked “Green Thumb” and put it in the collection basket or drop it off at the parish of-fice. Thank you for helping to beautify our outside space! Also thank you to the volunteers who do all the planting and upkeep. Your stewardship is greatly appreciated!

SPRING IS COMING!!!
