One thing is for sure, particular-ly where the crazy craftspeople ofLong Island Comedy are

concerned: A few gray hairs aren't adeterrent to a skilled comedian'sability to make crowdslaugh. Paul Anthony andhis funny bunch know thisvery well – and so, LongIsland Comedy's inaugural50+ Comedy Tourbecomes a riotous reality.

The first event in thisspecial 2016 tour takesplace on Thursday, July21 at 8:30 pm at The GoldCoast Arts Center in GreatNeck; headlining are EricHaft, Steve Lazarus, andKeith Anthony; the seriesreturns to the same venueon September 17.Saturday, September 24at 8 pm sees the seriestake over The MadisonTheatre at Molloy Collegein Rockville Centre, featuring Frankie Pace,Christine O'Leary, George Rini, andBill McCarty. "The idea for this tour hasbeen in the making for a number

of years,” said Anthony of the 50-plus concept. “The tour will feature

full lineups of top comedians, all ofwhich are 50 years of age or older. There is a growing audience forthese shows. The ‘baby boomer’population on Long Island contin-ues to expand each year, and manyof them are already fans of ourannual Long Island ComedyFestival and New Year's Laughin'Eve comedy shows. We wanted toexpand our offerings with a cus-tomized comedy show specificallydesigned for that population andspeaks to that generation. There's astigma in this country that once youturn 50, you're not as valuable orcapable. We're looking to prove to

people that this belief iscompletely wrong. The50-plus comedians onour tour are all in theirprime. The shows arehilarious, and we'rebringing the tour tosome of the best venues across LongIsland. Audiences aregoing to love theseshows!"

Aging Like Fine Whine:A New LI Comedy Tour

Page 7: Good Times 1201

GGhhooss ttbbuusstteerrssStarring Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie JonesDirected by Paul FeigSony PicturesIn Theaters July 15

Much like a certain Presidential candidate,Ghostbusters, from all accounts, will be big, loud, and stupid – which, given the tastes and class of

2016 America, should easily be one of the biggesthits of this summer blockbuster season. We will allhave to wait until Friday; those who have seen itbefore its release – published reports claim originalstar Dan Aykroyd loves this new film, while KevinSmith ripped its trailer to smithereens – are all overthe map.

However, with its toy tie-ins, non-stop hype, andguest appearances by its stars all over the mediaworld, this can't fail, which tells us how and whyNovember 8, 2016 might be the worst day in thehistory of our union – despite facts, figures, anddoubts, many folks simply do whatever they're toldto do, even when plunking down $12 for a ticketand another 18 smackers for Milk Duds, popcorn,

and a sugared soda thesize of a recycling bin.

Satire aside, its hard tofault the casting of thiscomedy/action film;Kristen Wiig is one of thetruly gifted comedians ofour time, and KateMcKinnon picked right upwhere Wiig left off on“Saturday Night Live.”Jones and McCarthy aretwo of a kind; they canbring belly laughs just bysporting a certain look ontheir faces. However, theadvanced notes we'regetting is that these talented leads becomedwarfed by all the specialeffects and over-the-topaction; the stuff is so wildand eye-jarring, even in the advertisements, itmakes the original Stay-Puft Marshmallow Manfrom the original 1984 film seem like a cheesy1960s Casper The Friendly Ghost TV cartoon.

Some film fans are bemoaning that it's a femalecast this time instead of the male leads so manyfans are familiar with; others are objecting to certainaspects of Jones' character. Great; controversyover a movie that just about as deep as The ThreeStooges Meet Hercules. Yep; nobody can agree onanything these days, which again explains the sadstate of this year's elections. Who ya gonna call?

The ShallowsStarring Blake Lively, Brett CullenDirected by Jaume Collet-Serra

Ombra FilmsThis unexpected hit thriller is as tight and taut

as its lead, Blake Lively. In a performance that willcertainly make an A-list film star out of the former“Gossip Girl” actress, this simple yet gripping storyof a solitary surfer being tageted by a great whiteshark is what most action films used to be: A simplestory told well.

Indeed, the revelation here is the likable Lively, who spends much of the film alone onscreen, muchlike Tom Hanks in Cast Away. Director JaumeCollet-Serra offers turgid, intense scenes thatbrought gasps and shrieks from audience membersduring our screening. Clearly a “little film thatcould,” The Shallows is the sleeper success of2016, proving a truth: Offer intelligent filmmakingand a character an audience can identify with, and the rest will take care of itself.

It’s a hot summer, buta cool film festival ison its way to StallerCenter for the Arts atStony BrookUniversity: The 21st

Alan Inkles, the founder and director of the Festival, had high hopes to secure particular films for theOpening and Closing Nights, and was delighted whenhis requests were met. Both screenings will have their

European directors representing their films – JánosEdelényi, director of The Carer, will be on hand forOpening Night, and Hannes Holm, director of A ManCalled Ove, is attending Closing Night’s screening.

The Carer from Yellow Affair and The HungarianNational Film Fund is the Opening Night east coastpremiere. It’s a dramatic feature starring Brian Cox andnewcomer Coco König in a film that tells the story of ayoung Hungarian refugee who becomes the caregiver

of an aging, tempera-mental actor. ClosingNight brings the eastcoast premiere of AMan Called Ove, astory set in Swedendirected by HannesHolm and written byHannes Holm andFredrik Backman, theauthor of the novelby the same name. After she crashesinto his mailbox, anunexpected friendship developsbetween pregnant

Parvaneh and neighborhood crank Ove.In addition, two world premieres are American

We live in a timewhere instant fame is often the measure of successand a body of work accounts for very little. Making NoPay, Nudity helped me rediscover that as WinstonChurchill said, ‘Success is moving from disappointment to disappointment without losing enthusiasm.’”

While it doesn’t rank with Tom Seaver’s returnto the New York Mets in 1983 following hisbanishment to the Cincinnati Reds (still thefranchise’s worst moment), it’s understandablewhy many fans are happy with Jose Reyes’s

pending return. The talented shortstop thatcame up through the Mets minor league system left the team in2011 as a free agentafter leading theNational League in hitting. While it’s under-standable that a playerleaves for a new teamthat gives him the bestoffer, in this case theMiami Marlins; whatwas bothersome wasthe Mets, in the midst ofits Bernie Madoff-induced financial crisis, refused to even make atoken contractual offerto Reyes' agents.

The Mets, plaguedby injuries, see Reyesas a valuable and versatile player who willnot add much to theirpayroll. Even at 32,Reyes is probably the

fastest Mets runner. He should help sell ticketsas well.

Domestic violence shouldn’t be minimizedsimply because the assailant is an athlete whoplays for your favorite team. Mets generalSandy Alderson stated that “(Reyes) has gone, and continues to undergo, counseling. Ibelieve that he deserves a second chance” ina press release announcing the Reyes-Metsreunion. Most observers concur with Aldersonthat the affable Reyes, who has a reservoir ofgoodwill in Queens, should get the benefit of

the doubt. Reyes holds a some-

what dubious distinctionin being the man who hasplayed the most games ina Mets uniform withoutappearing in a WorldSeries game for the team. That was the answer to atrivia question on SNY’srecent special, “Beat TheBooth,” where fans got totest their knowledge ofMets trivia against broadcasters Gary Cohenand Howie Rose. Theshow is enjoyablebecause it pays tribute tobaby boomer TV gameshows such as “$10,000Pyramid,” “Password,”and “Family Feud.” HostChris Carlin did a great

job of channeling his inner

Monty Hall. One of Reyes’ former Mets teammates is

first baseman Ike Davis, who briefly joined theNew York Yankees before being outrighted tothe minors. Davis was barely recognizable ashe joined the “Bombers” as he was clean-shaven, following the Yankees’ dictum against

facial hair: “I always need to have a razorready because of my constant five o’clockshadow,” he said with a chuckle when I spokewith him before a game against the MinnesotaTwins.

The Yankees celebrated the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mantle’s “triple crown”season with a Mantle bobblehead giveaway. The Yankees invited the star’s sons, David andDanny, to attend the game and toss out ceremonial first pitches. TheMantles also met with themedia to discussed theirfather’s legacy, and bothwere surprised to learn thatformer Major LeagueBaseball PlayersAssociation executive director Marvin Miller citedMickey Mantle as the key tothe success of the players’union when it was formed50 years ago. In his 2004autobiography, A WholeDifferent Ballgame, Millerknew that Mickey carried alot of weight with his peers.Miller was worried thatMantle would think of him-self as a company manalong with the fact that hewas from ultra-conservativeOklahoma, a state that cer-tainly was never a hotbedfor organizing labor. Miller was understandablyecstatic when the Mick put his arms aroundhim and said “Listen to this guy, fellas!” whenhe was addressing the Yankees players duringspring training in 1966. I asked the Mantlebrothers if their father ever speculated about

how his career would have been affected byfree agency: “Dad loved being a Yankee and Idoubt that he would have ever have consid-ered leaving,” David unequivocally stated.

Lenny Dykstra didn’t talk to the media during the recent 1986 Metsteam reunion at Citi Field. The press was informed byMets’ VP of communica-tions, Jay Horwitz, that itwas the decision ofHarperCollins, the publisherof his then about-to-bereleased memoir, House OfNails. That seemedstrange, because publishers would normallycrave the publicity. Fast forward about a month, andthe reason became quiteclear. HarperCollins knewthat Dykstra trashed a lot ofhis teammates and hismanager, Davey Johnson. Its executives clearly didnot want to put their authoron the defensive while ruin-ing a feel-good occasion.

The New York Knicksmade a splash the day before the NBA Draftby swinging a trade with the Chicago Bulls thatnetted guard Derrick Rose. Knicks presidentPhil Jackson did not give up draft choices toacquire him, and Rose has only a year left onhis current contract. I will, however, miss Robin

Lopez, who was traded to the Bulls in the deal. The center was always at his locker and morethan willing to talk about the game or anythingelse with the press.

New Brooklyn Nets general manager SeanMarks managed to get his team a first roundNBA Draft pick by trading Thaddeus Young tothe Indiana Pacers for the 20th selection in thedraft. The Nets chose Michigan forward CarisLevert, who has battled foot injuries. Theyoung player comes from a musical family, ashe is a cousin of Eddie Levert, the lead singerof The O’Jays, and singer Gerald Levert.

It's now officially summer ... outdoor shows are heating up ourarea … and musicians are recordingnational releases all over the place, all emanating from Long Islandrecording studios and rehearsalhouses. For instance:

Freya Wilcox & The Howlreturned to Sabella Studios inRoslyn Heights in late May and earlyJune to work on their upcomingalbum. Self-described as “cuttingblues/punk with a road rash howl”and with a decidedly rock edge, theband – Wilcox on guitars andvocals, Craig Shayon bass andvocals, and C.J. Dunaieff on drums– have stormed out of Brooklyn tobecome one of the hottest bands inthe region, already critics' darlingswith a burgeoning area fan base. Atthis point, The Howl has launchedseveral national tours, including its

own“SuperFriend-ship”tour; itrecentlyappearedat PunkIsland onGover-nor'sIsland aswell. Theband isalso slated to

make a run on the west coast as itcontinues forging on. We thinkWilcox and the boys could make asmuch of a huge go of it as recent“Saturday Night Live” guest

Courtney Barnett has(although, to our ears,Wilcox rocks harder, thankfully); learn more atfreyawilcox.com, and lookfor their album in the coming months. To learnhow you can become thenext artist to go nationalafter laying down tracks atSabella Studios, log on tosabellastudios.com, or callthem at (516) 484-0862.

Musicals Sublime:She Loves Me

Studio 54Fiddler On The Roof

Broadway TheatreA delicious, deliriously romantic confection,

The Roundabout Theatre Company’s practically perfect revival of the 1963 musicalromance She Loves Me is this season’scharmer. With Sheldon Harnick’s witty character-driven lyrics, Jerry Bock’s hummable, lilting melodies, and JoeMasteroff’s rock-solid book, She Loves Me isan enchanting, giddy Valentine to love.

Directed in this sparkling revival with great

charm and style by Scott Ellis (who triumphedwith his 1993 revival), the musical (set in 1934)benefits from David Rockwell’ sumptuousjewel-box set that opens from a Budapeststreet to reveal the orate Maraczek parfumerie;Jeff Mahshie’s stylish period costumes and adazzling A-list cast of charmers who play thesales clerks and owner of the perfume empori-um. Ravishingly beautiful, with a gorgeoussoprano and deft comic timing, Tony Awardwinner Laura Benanti and the charming, goofyZachary Levi play bickering colleagues who, unbeknownst to themselves, are lonely heartpen pals pouring their hearts out to each otherin letters. Gavin Creel and Jane Krakowski arehilarious as a narcissistic cad and his increas-

ingly impatient lover; Byron Jennings is sympathetic as the cuckolded Maraczek, andMichael McGrath and Nicholas Barasch are aprotect-my-job-at-all-costs clerk and an eagerapprentice.

Director Bartlett Sher’s revival of Fiddler On

The Roof is an understated, almost reflectivetake on this universal favorite. Instead of alarger-than-life Tevye, Danny Burstein is adown-to-earth everyman in a nuanced performance brimming with sweetness andsoulful humanity, but lacking the outsized gustoof the role's originator, Zero Mostel. Sher hasjettisoned Jerome Robbins’ powerful choreog-raphy for spirited dances by Israeli-born chore-ographer Hofesh Shechter that retain Robbins’flavor. Sher’s frequent collaborators, Michael

Yeargan and Catherine Zuber, designed theunpoetic, utilitarian sets and the earth-tonedcostumes. In a dumbing-down misstep, Sheropens the musical with Burstein as a red-parka-clad contemporary traveler to the deserted Anatevka and ends it with Bursteinjoining the exodus of Jews into exile to – a

heavy-handed link to thecontemporary refugee crisis. Those quibblesaside, this Fiddler stilltouches our hearts andminds with its artistry andforceful storytelling.

In creating the musicalin 1964, Robbins seam-lessly integrated story, dance, and song into anorganic whole. JosephStein’s intelligent, affectingbook retains the wisdom, wit and humanity ofSholem Aleichem’s stories.Jerry Bock’s tuneful scoreoverflows with catchymelodies and buoyant

showbiz tunes. Alexandra Silber, SamanthaMassell, and Melanie Moore, who play Tevye’soldest daughters, sing beautifully and act withgreat passion. Jessica Hecht as his long-suffering, tart-tongued wife Golde delivers herlines with droll irony. The daughters’ diversesuitors, a tailor (Adam Kantor), a revolutionary(Ben Rappaport), and a Russian soldier (NickRehberger) are well defined. Most importantly,Tevye’s story still resonates with our nation ofimmigrants.

Stop And Stare Media And Management (stopanstaremm.com) and Dean James Silva have announced the release of the new album The Soundtrack Of My Life by Silva and his band. The title cut from the soon-to-be released CD is “I Hate You,” a rock & roll tune about the trial and tribulations of relationships.

After decades of touring, Dean James Silva, the songwriter for his band, took a long break from the music scene as he battledaddition to opiates. Since his return about a year ago, “The DJSB,” as some call it, has exploded onto the local music scene; the group recently headlines 89 North Music Venue in Patchogue.

Having played in bands since the age of 15, Silva is a "battle-tested veteran of a musician with a relentless hunger to pursue his musical endeavors,” according to a press release.

“The multi-instrumentalist has conquered substance abuse and the personal demons that go hand in hand with it. That struggle had sidelined Dean for the past 20 years ... He's back.” Silva has a new management deal in place with Stop & StareManagement, and a new working relationship with OmniPop and hisBilly Joel tribute band (Angry Young Men).

“His lyrics and music could only have been written as the by-product of one's darkest years and experiences,” touted the press release on the songs contained in Silva’s new album. “It's a very personal look into the frailties of the human experiencegone badly, but don't think for a moment that this composer is a one trick pony by any means. His songs also scream of hope, faith, and the ‘light at the end of the tunnel; no matter how long anddark the tunnel may have seemed at times. DJSB captures thethoughts, nightmares, and feelings of desperation – as well asredemption – exceptionally well.”

The Dean James Silva Band features veterans of the area musicscene, including drummer Lee Nelson, bassist Joe Cumia (the U2tribute band 2U), and guitarist Brian McKeever.

Ain’t No Big Thing: So will there everbe a music artist that becomes the“new” Beatles, Elvis Presley, or DavidBowie? I'm sad to report, in case youhaven't figured it out yet, that theanswer is a certain, resounding no. Thecircumstances are just not there, yet Iam asked this type of question over

and over, as people just do not want toaccept the new realities of contemporary pop culture.

We shall try one last time to wrap aribbon around the box and send it on itsway: The reality isthat there is noapparent desire onthe part of the current music audience for sucha universal artist orband to serve asthe focal point ofthe pop universe. If such an act wereto exist (which isunlikely), theprocess necessaryto reach the delirious levels ofworld-changingsuperstardom cannot proceed, as it didfor five decades (the 1950s through the1990s).

For starters, there is the subject of“need,” as in a gaping space that iswaiting to be filled. Need, in this case, was dictated by the birth of teen culturein the 1950s; the end of World War IIand a prosperous America allowed itsteenagers to enjoy luxuries and freedoms that other generations beforethem were denied – they suddenly hadcars, transistor radios, healthyallowance money (for hair products, clothes, hula hoops, record players, andrecords to go along with them), anda Madison Avenue business modelbased on trends and fads aimed exclusively at them. Next, Elvis Presley

came along, and the film "TheBlackboard Jungle," and products werenow, for the first time, made just for thisaudience. A tightly knit network, composed of AM Top 40 radio stations,TV dance shows such as "AmericanBandstand,” and publications includingthe groundbreaking 16 Magazinebecame the gatekeepers of what was inand what was cool.

Media was the controlling factorand the reason why things could

become so big, so quickly. If a radiostation became popular (think AM 77-WABC in the '60s and '70s), the majority of listeners listened to and conformed to the dictates of that station. FM album radio followed(WNEW-FM, WBAB-FM), and bands orartists lived or died by getting or not

getting played on those stations. There were no otheravenues for a “tidal wave”effect (as happened with TheBeatles) to happen. Everyone

listened to the same radio station, readthe same mags (16 gave way to RollingStone by the end of the 60s), and wanted to be grooving to what every-one else was grooving to.

Mindset was the most potent factor. The '50s rebellion led to a liberationframework; young people wanted theirfreedom, and the music of the '50s wasthe rebellious soundtrack. The influx ofR&B made the young hip to the plightof people of color, and the '60s gavebirth to folk, rock, and soul music fueling the young to champion civilrights, as they integrated their musiccollections (as I used to say, “makemine Motown!”). The '70s saw femalestake up the banner, and again, whetherit was Helen Reddy going to #1 with "IAm Woman" or The Runaways becoming the first all-female rockers, the revolution continued. The '80s sawthe LGBT banners enter the picture, and by the '90s, most of the high-profile

battles had been fought and won, with artists and music becom-ing totally associated with allthese revolutions and move-ments. Pop and rock meantsomething, and representedsomething – but by the 1990s,the Internet appeared, musicand video was online, gleeclub TV shows beginning with"American Idol" had removedand replaced "AmericanBandstand," and the overall

pop music scene resembled, and continues to resemble, the pre-rock &roll1950s when singers sang songs, everyone heard the songs but didn'talways know the singer, and it wasdiversion, not revolution.

Adele is Patti Page and Taylor Swiftis Teresa Brewer, which is all fine andgood, pure pop for purely pop purposes– but please stop waiting for the nextBeatles. The gatekeepers don't havegates any more.

DDwweeeezziill ZZaappppaa::What’s In A Name? Dweezil Zappa – brilliant, asusual, at his recent show atThe Paramount – changedhis current show’s name during April; the concerts, long billed as “Zappa PlaysZappa,” were changed to“Dweezil Zappa Plays FrankZappa” under duress fromthe Zappa Family Trust, whoholds a trademark on thename.

In June, the Zappa FamilyTrust threatened Dweezil withtrademark infringement, andDweezil, just before theParamount engagement, changed his show's nameone last time; he now will be billed as, simply, Dweezil Zappa.

"Even though ‘DweezilZappa Plays Plays Frank

Zappa’ was well within myrights to use, I decided touse the name my fathergave me to avoid furtherharassment from my siblings, Ahmet and Diva,"said Dweezil, who celebrates the 50th anniversary of Freak Out!,the debut from Frank Zappa& The Mothers Of Invention,on his tour this year. The fullname of the tour is now “50Years Of Frank: DweezilZappa Plays Whatever TheF@%k He Wants! – TheCease and Desist Tour.”

“We are incorporatingthe absurdity,” said Dweezil.“Since the efforts to dealwith this Zappa Family Trust matterprivately have been met with threats, Ihave been put into the position tohave to share the story publicly andstand up for myself by figurativelywalking the picket line with a sign that

says 'ZFT Don'tTread On Me!' Thelast thing I want isfor any of thisdrama to overshadow myfather's music. His commitment toexcellence and hisintegrity havealways been aguiding light forme.”
