In an effort to reduce, even if slightly, our impact on God’s creation, and with an eye toward reducing costs, we are eliminating the use of plastic stir straws and the individual plastic coffee creamers during fellowship. We will have creamer available every Sunday for your use. During the week, coffee creamer can be found in the kitchen re- frigerator. Additionally, real spoons will be available on Sunday mornings. We realize that this is only a minimal effort to use products that are easily recycled and limit our use of plas- tics. However, we hope that in a small way, such action helps us to be good stewards of creation and our finances. Saturday of Service Saturday, August 18th On Saturday, August 18th, Holy Apostles will once again partner with MIFA to fill bags for MIFA’s Emergency Services. If you would like to help, meet in the Holy Apostles Parish Life Center at 9:00 a.m. In preparation for filling the Emergency Services bags, we are seeking the following donations, prior to August 18th: Baby Care Packages: 4-pack disposable diapers; trav- el size baby lotion, powder, and wipes; infant juice, etc. To-Go Meals Packages: single-serving cans of tuna, chicken, fruit cups, and applesauce; granola bars; crackers; cookies, etc Adult Personal Care Packages: toothbrushes; combs; razors; travel size soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and body lotion; etc. Boxes for these donations will be located in the hallway. Come for fellowship and fun !

This summer I was fortunate enough to be part of a group that attended Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Program). Because of the support and prayers Holy Apostles gave to us, the week was a total success. Fr. Clay, Johnny Eric Johnson, Isaac Keszler, Esme Keszler, Katie McDaniel, Annabel Hines, and myself spent a week in the Cumber-land Mountains of East Tennessee serving the people of that community. The mission of Mountain T.O.P. is to seek to meet the physi-cal, spiritual, social, and emotional needs of the people of the Cumberland Mountain region through home repairs and day camps. With the exception of Katie, who worked with the day camp, we all were put into groups with other people from around the country and sent to homes of those in the area. My group had three different pro-jects we worked on during the week, in-cluding building a roof over a porch, painting a basement floor and patio, and doing yardwork. All the people we worked with were kind and thankful for the help we provided. Katie had a won-derful time helping with the day camp Mountain T.O.P. provided for the chil-

dren of Grundy County. This service gets the kids out of the house and into a com-munity setting where they play games and are exposed to many other activities in their community. One day the kids even went to the University of the South in Sewanee and participated in a music festi-val that was being held on campus. Not only does Mountain T.O.P. strive to help the people of that communi-ty, but it also is intentional in its efforts to fill us up spiritually. Starting after break-fast with “Day Break” the Mountain T.O.P. volunteers were invited to reflec-tion and prayer about their experiences and their own lives. During lunch, we were encouraged to eat with our families and all paused to reflect on the day. And every night, before fellowship, we wor-shipped together in a variety of prayer services. I think everyone enjoyed the week despite the heat, the ticks, and the poison ivy. Hopefully next year we will have a bigger group and continue our tradition of serving the people of the Cumberland Mountains.

August’s book selection is Cutting for Stone by Abraham Ver-ghese. Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles—and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined. Abraham Verghese is senior associate chair and professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine, Stan-ford University School of Medicine. He sees patients, teaches students and writes. From 1990 to 1991, Abraham Verghese attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop at The University of Iowa, where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree. The Reading with the Rector Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room. Please join us for discussion and snacks.

On October 3rd, Fr. Clay will lead an

exploration into Centering Prayer. We look

forward to seeing you!

The Gathering & The Journey September 5th Beginning Wednesday, September 5th, The Gathering invites you to join parishioners and friends in a potluck dinner followed by various offerings to deepen our discipleship. The Gathering will be the first Wednesday of each month. Bring a dish to share at 6:00pm, and then join one of the groups which follow including the Choir, Pizza and Prayer for our youth or an offering led by Fr. John or Fr. Clay. If you wish, simply use this as a time of fellowship or use the church for prayer. The Nursery will be available.

The Journey Class September 5th thru October 17th Also on September 5th, we will begin the Journey Class. Our journey in faith is always a series of unexpected twists and turns, each transition and mo-ment filled with grace. Experiences and events give us pause to ask questions, to challenge assumptions and to seek a deeper more authentic relationship with God and ourselves. The Journey Course is an opportunity for candid and mean-ingful consideration of our lives as disciples of Jesus. This is not a course to teach you to be a good church member, but an occasion to know and love the Lord and affirm our place in the community of the beloved. If you are interest-ed, please contact Fr. John at [email protected]. Childcare will be pro-vided.
