Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) September 11 will always be an anniversary in the USA of both horrible events and heroic sacrifice. We pray the Prince of Peace will enable all peoples to desire and work for peaceful co-existence on our fragile planet. (2) All are welcome to the 7th Annual Good Shepherd Parish Picnic at St. Philip in Lyman this Sunday, September 11, Noon-2:30 pm. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be provided at no cost, but parishioners are invited to bring a (peanut-free) dessert or salad to

share. You may also want to bring a lawn chair for your comfort. There will be enter-tainment for children and live music! Rain or shine. (3) We have begun our fall/winter schedule of Masses. Saint Brendan in Biddeford Pool observed its final 9:30 am Sun-day Mass of the season last Sunday; the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturdays will continue at that location through October 8 (Columbus Day weekend). On Wednesday, September 14, the summertime 8 am Mass at St. Margaret in Old Orchard Beach will be replaced by an 8:30 am Mass at St. James School in Biddeford for the benefit of our Catholic school students – note the change in time from last year. The Sunday Mass schedule at Saint Margaret in Old Orchard Beach returns to the usual weekend schedule next weekend, September 17/18 (4 pm, 8:30 am, 10:30 am). I thank everyone involved for their cooperation. (4) The St. Joseph parking lot construction is 95% complete. A safety fence along the handicap ramp & a railing for the steps at that entry are now under construction and will be installed at the end of September; a late but necessary change of vendor led to a delay. A final coat of pavement is scheduled for the week of September 19; striping the lot will immediately follow during that week. We will close the lot for that entire week to give the pavement & striping adequate time to harden and dry. Some parishioners have asked whether a stairway will connect the lower parking lot to the upper handicap lot. While that was in the original design, it was eliminated because of the high cost to construct and winter maintenance concerns. However, there will be access to the front of the church without the need to climb steps. Folks can be dropped at the curb on Elm Street where they can walk up the paved ramp. Others can park in the handicap lot or drop someone off near the handicap ramp where they can walk onto the ramp into the church. This final design is not perfect, but the result of considerable discussion and feedback from our engineers, the parish finance council and diocesan offices. (5) A new lectionary for French speaking Catholics became effective last weekend. We purchased the 3-volume set and have begun using them at Masses celebrated in Good Shepherd Parish, particularly the 8 am Mass on Sundays at St. Joseph. For some reason unknown to us, a Book of the Gospels with the new trans-lation is not yet available. It appears we will have to wait at least until mid-October before we have a copy. (6) The 2016 Catholic Appeal: As of September 6, Good Shepherd parishioners had pledged $159,125 or 88% toward our total parish goal of $180,726. The last week of August was the final week of the appeal. I am grateful to all who pledged even though we did not make goal this year. Fortunately, because our parish sponsors a Catholic school, we still will receive a “kickback” of $19,676 if all pledges are paid up. (7) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who volunteer their time and talent to help organize and lead formation programs for the benefit of our children, teens and adults. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: An American family was entertaining a visiting British couple. As they ended their stay and were pulling out of the driveway, they waved and called, “Cheerio! Cheerio!” The Americans’ 3-year-old daughter waved back and yelled, “Rice Krispies! Rice Krispies!” -Capper’s Weekly
