The New Face of D:Fine AnnouncedThe new face of D:fine in Haverhill has been announced as Harriet Bevan, 19, who won a competition run by the Echo to have a free makeover at the D:fine salon.

Artistic designer Kelly Rayner got to work on Harriet so she could show off a number of styles that will soon be displayed in the salon windows.

Salon owners Lynn Williamson and Michelle Wicks hope to display the results of Harriet’s makeover and photo shoot in the Good Salon Guide’s monthly magazine, having already been graded a five star business by the Good Salon Guide shortly after opening in 2007.

Harriet spoke of her competition win by saying, “I entered the competition because I like hair modelling and would love to get into the fashion industry and work at Vogue, so I just wanted to get started really. I haven’t thought about professional modelling but it wouldn’t be something I’d say no to. I do change my look all the time and tend to always go for a new fresh look - At the moment I’m trying to go for the Paloma Faith look as that’s what I’m really into.

“Now and then I go to the salon to get a whole new look, I’m really into the vintage scene at the moment. I’ve loved the things D:fine have been doing and it’s nice to see how they can suddenly make my look completely different. I really like the look they have done now and I’ve been watching them to get some tips for next time.”

Lynn Williamson said one of the reasons Harriet was chosen as the competition winner was because of her vintage appearance, “She was just very attractive and had the look we were looking for, that vintage look which is the latest fashion, Harriet will be the new face of the business. We were looking for someone who wants to get into modelling so we can have some images to go in our salon window, and then send the pictures on to the Good Salon Guide magazine.”

Charles Clarke Hosts Event to Mark Good Barbers Guide AwardCharles Clarke barbers hosted an Award Reception and Open Night in September to mark their achievement and recognition with the Good Barbers Guide.

Tikadi Takes Top Business AwardPopular local Essex salon brand Tikadi has won the ‘Small Business of the Year Award 2012’ at the Mid Essex Business Awards. The award recognises strong fiscal growth, superb client service, excellent educational support, and team spirit.

Salon Owners Sharon Hennessey and Michael Mehmet, along with their entire team, attended the black tie awards which were held at Boreham House in Chelmsford, where the winning businesses were announced.

When asked about the salon’s achievement, Sharon commented, “Our team really go that extra mile to make sure that our clients enjoy visiting the salon and that everyone loves their hair; I’m really pleased for all of us.”

The salon entered the awards via written entry. Judges then visited the salon to see what the hype was about; the same with all finalists, then a decision on the winner was made.

This is the second year the awards have run with Tikadi winning ‘Excellent Customer Service’ in 2011.

What’s the best way to grow long hair?The best way to grow long hair is to have a good balanced diet with plenty of leafy greens, take regular exercise and have regular trims to remove split ends.

Brush the hair with a natural Bristle brush on a solid base (as rubber bases cause static and create split ends), brush head over waist every day.

How do you keep hair healthy and avoid split ends?Brushing as instructed in ‘how to grow long hair’, and use a shampoo with a PH balance - do not over condition!

Only use a hairdryer on medium heat never on high, and always blow-dry in the direction of the hair. Try drying head over waist so that the main heat is taken by the hair at the back of the head where it is stronger.

Never brush wet hair! Use a wide tooth comb with saw cut teeth as this will reduce damage. When combing always start at the ends and work your way up, removing tangles as you go.

What are the damaging effects of over-straightening long hair? Using straightening irons dries out the hair; any heat over 45 degrees centigrade will damage hair and result in split ends and breakage. Even lotions that say they prevent damage will not work if the hair is straightened every day.

Neil Ward the lord of long hair! Born into a hairdressing family in the northeast of England, Neil has always loved working with long hair, to the point that other salons would recommend long hair clients to him.

After working in the family salon, then managing and finally owning a high street salon in Stockton on Tees, in 1981, Neil decided to move to Harrods to work with and follow the teachings of Dr George Michael Selinzki. Neil managed the long hair clinic in Harrods almost from conception, until moving the concept to Fortnum and Mason in 1988.

Now at The Long Hair Clinic at Patrick Ludde Salon, Neil con-tinues the teachings of Dr George Michael - If you have long hair Neil is the one to see!


LONG HAIR

How do you keep kinks at bay once the hair has been straightened?Giving your hair a wrap set is one of the best ways to straighten the hair without damage. This system requires a little practice but works really well.

HOW TO:

• Put one large roller at the crown of the head securing with large clips, (use smooth rollers not Velcro as they will damage the hair and tangle in long hair). Then section the hair and scrape it round the head securing with large clips until all the hair is wrapped round the head.

• Dry with a hood dryer or defused hand dryer until completely dry.

• Unwrap and you have straight hair that is smooth and shiny.

How do you repair damaged and dry hair? First use a conditioner that adds moisture not protein, after a couple of weeks start using a protein conditioner, and then after six weeks have a deep heat treatment. This should restore the hair’s health and eventually give you back good condition.

Remember, have regular trims about every eight weeks to remove splits and keep the ends tidy.Keeping hair all one length is better, as having a short fringe with long hair increases the hair shed because of equalisation of weight on the scalp. Also the more layers the more breakage and splits - with hair one length the hairs protect each other.

When growing your hair, get the ends trimmed every three months to keep it looking healthy and thick. This will get rid of any dead ends so that as your hair grows, it’s not breaking off at the bottom and losing the length you’ve worked hard to get!

To keep hair healthy and avoid split ends make sure you use the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type – putting the wrong cream on your skin can have awful results, and it’s the same with your hair! If you can afford it always try and use professional products, they are always best – why spend money on getting a great hair cut or colour if you use poor products that won’t maintain it?

Overusing the straighteners changes the structure of your hair and will reduce its elasticity. Eventually you’ll lose the natural shape of your curls entirely so don’t do it ladies!

Some simple rules about face shapes: Short hair best suits smaller faces and longer hair suits rounder ones. If your face is round, avoid a short, severe bob. If you have a large forehead, asymmetrical or sweeping fringes work well. For low hairlines, don’t opt for a heavy fringe. Regular trims every six weeks can help the process of growing your hair long. To keep split ends at bay always use intense treatments regularly and heat protection sprays when using heat.

Wear your hair to suit your face shape, for example round faces can pull off longer styles or choppy and short with lots of layers, heart shaped faces can carry a classic bob but don’t wear it too long at the front. Healthy hair will always be shiny and grow faster. Growing damaged hair will only make the process more frustrating and longer, so advice here is to keep your hair healthy from the start, or start a fresh with healthy hair before you attempt to grow.

Face shape should always lead the style you have. Working with the hair’s natural texture will not only promote health it will make the hair manageable, easy and suitable for you and your kinks.

A great tonic for bad oily hair days is dry shampoo, but not the white singular colour. Try to match your dry shampoo with your hair colour Bumble & Bumble have red, white, brown and black to suit your existing hair. Trae at browns, Dumfries

The secret to keeping long hair in good condition is a regular trim every three months and to use a good hydrating shampoo. Avoid using a heated appliance, but if you do use one make sure you use a heat protection product - Iron In from Matrix Design Pulse works brilliantly.

Loosely plait your hair at night to avoid excess matting during your sleep, and when brushing your hair use a good quality padded brush like the bristle brush from Balmain. This is the ideal tool to de-tangle your hair but doesn’t rip the cuticle, leaving your hair shiny and in optimum condition. When straightening long hair you should always use a heat protector and make sure the hair is 100% dry before you use straighteners. Always section the hair off, don’t take massive sections this results in burning and damaging the hair. To get that sleek shiny finish, take sections of about one-two cm thick and glide the hair through the straighteners. Straightening your hair wrongly can lead to split ends and breakage so we advise you do use the correct heat protective products to help prevent this.

To control kinks and frizz using the correct styling product always helps, for example a relaxing gel or serum to help with the frizz and curl of your hair. But a good hair brush and a nice even flow of hot air when blow-drying should help it too.Adam Davison at Tikadi Ongar, Essex

The tools you need for a perfect home blow-dry are a good hairdryer with a nozzle – this is essential for directing the heat and air-flow – and a natural boar-bristle brush for smoothing. Or, if you want added volume, a heat-retaining brush, which many salons will sell.

Simon started his career as a young apprentice in his local salon and after years of hard graft he became one of the first L’Oreal ID Artists, owned two salons and specialised in session styling for runway and photographic shoots, including Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and British and Italian Vogue. Simon has also styled for numerous music videos and album covers including Kylie Minogue’s Showgirl Tour.

The salon, although large and airy, has a cosy vintage feel and exudes decadence without feeling stuffy or cluttered. Leeds Academy for Hairdressing and Barbering (LAFHAB) was established in 2011 by husband and wife Beverley and Keith Boseley-Yemm. The academy was opened through a disappointment in the calibre of college trained job applicants. My hair used to be red but I now want to dye it blonde. I’ve let the dye fade out a lot to a kind of orange/copper colour. If I get blonde highlights over this will it make me blonde?Any suggestions will help; I really want to go blonde!

“Don’t worry; by leaving your hair you’ve done the best thing. Book a consultation with a colourist who can look at your hair length and condition before deciding the best way forward.

Personally, I recommend having some highlights put through with a few different arrangements and tones that suit you. The colourist can then control and tame any tones you don’t want with the correct use of a toner. I’d also recommend an all-over colour between the highlights to give it a more natural feel and phase out any of those remaining red tones.”

“If you opt for lots of fine highlights you’ll go lighter, but it won’t go straight to blonde in one step. A few applications of full head highlights over time will give you the result you want , but you’ll need to be sure to care for your hair with weekly deep-conditioning treatments to replenish the moisture that gets stripped out.

An ashy toner over the highlights will also remove any yellow or orange tones that come from the old red colour clinging to the hair.”

If the hair has faded to a yellow/orange type colour then it could be possible to go blonde. However, this would have to be done by a colourist who understands colour correction work and can work with undercoats and how to neutralize unwanted tones correctly. Go speak to someone armed with as much information as possible, (pictures of what you like etc), and tell them your hair history. Hope you have fun being a blonde!

I have let my previously dyed red hair fade; can I now put blonde highlights over this?

Hello,

I had my hair coloured about a week ago, I wanted a chocolate brown which is close to my natural colour, and instead I got a very dark brown that almost looks black.

I thought some blonde highlights would help, however I was afraid to say gold as I have gotten red in the past which I don’t want, I want gold so I said yellow, which is what I got.

There are some orange pieces in my bangs, on the side of my head, and in the back, the highlights are also not even, there are a lot more on one side than the other.

HELP!!!

I am supposed to get more highlights tomorrow to balance it out, if I want them more golden can they do something to fix the colour of the ones I have, and how do I get rid of the orange?

You do need help! May I suggest you re-think your appointment with the hairdresser who did your colour. It sounds to me that unfortunately who ever gave you the dark brown colour did not make a colour test before applying the whole colour. May I suggest you use the Good Salon Guide website to find your nearest specialist hair colouring salon, and take on-site professional advice.

Talk straight with your hairdresser, tell him/her precisely what you want to look like, what colour you like, and take some picture cut outs from magazines of hair colours of celebrities you like, it is one of the best way to communicate your dream and wish to a hairdresser or colourist. Another way to find a good hairdresser is to look at women who you work with or when you’re out and about, and ask a stranger whose colour or style you like who their hairdresser is, it is the best recommendation you can get.

I am sorry I cannot advise you better, you do have a small disaster on your hands on the sound of your message, and a professional salon should be able to give you the best on the spot advice.

The damage may already been done I am afraid. Blonde highlights are fine to do for years and years, however when we colour over them, especially with the colourist’s nightmare (home hair colourant in black shades) it becomes very tricky to get it back to anything gorgeous.

The process that your hair needs to go through is quite big, the black pigment needs to be removed with a colour remover, and then a suitable brown colour needs to be applied over it to get an even result. However as there is bleach underneath all the black then it may be dry so I suggest a haircut and a few deep conditioning treatments.

This is a job for the professionals and I strongly suggest you go visit a colourist who enjoys performing colour corrections.

How long will it take me to get from dark purple to blonde?

About a month ago I dyed my hair dark purple. My hairdresser recently took some of my hair to test as I want to go bleach blonde. She did the strand test using lower percentage bleach which burnt my hair. She also said my hair is very dry.

How long will it take for me to get to a platinum white blonde? And also the first time the hairdresser dyes my hair what colour will it go - she said a dark blonde?

If you have been colouring your hair dark purple for a while then the hair maybe stained quite deeply. Staining happens when dark or intense colours are applied over and over until the cuticle becomes very heavily saturated with artificial dye. Bleach should remove it but I think you will get a very warm strawberry pinkish type blonde the first time you attempt to lighten it.

If your hair is dry and damaged do you really think it is worth it? I would ease off colouring it for a while and let the colour fade so some of your natural colour can come through. Have some decent haircuts to get rid of the existing colour. This should make it easier to go blonde in the future.


Hello,

I have sensitive skin so need to have colour applied with a full head of foils. I have mid-brown hair with a smattering of grey, mainly at the back of the crown.The salon I use at the moment is one of the leading colour salons but they do not seem to be able to colour or mask the grey very well. They told me that you will never get a good coverage even with a full head of foils, but there seems to be very little coverage of the small amount of grey at the back.

They employ a “slice” method as they say this is the best way of covering grey and that only a full head tint will cover grey fully. I have friends with more grey in their hair than me who have foils and seem to have a much better result than the salon I use is achieving!

Can you tell me if a full head of foils would cover the majority of grey hairs?

If your skin is sensitive and colour irritates your scalp then you are doing the only feasible thing I can think of to mask the grey hairs. Slicing techniques are a partial method of colouring hair and as you may know never get to the root area (maybe 0.5cm away).

Have you thought about maybe going lighter with your colours? That way you are not just masking it with your mid-brown shade, but blending light and dark tones to diffuse the grey throughout the hair. This would give a great illusion of the white hairs being highlights through an otherwise dark head of hair.


I’m having foils to cover my grey but it doesn’t seem to be

covering it very well?

Hi,

We had a client in our salon that wanted foils and wanted to go lighter, our client has previously used home colours and stopped colouring to achieve a lighter shade. We used powder lightener and 20%, her hair started to get really, really hot to touch so we washed it off straight away, but we don’t know why this would have happened. The colour she used previously, Garnier, has no metallic salt in it. We’re so confused, please HELP!!!

Charlotte, New Zealand Powder lighteners all generate some heat when they are wrapped in foils, but if they are really hot to the touch then I am not sure what might be on the hair to cause this. Garnier home colours don’t contain metallic salts and are quite alright to colour over with professional products. I do think you should ask her whether she is a swimmer or if she is on medication, these both can affect hair colouring.

Ask her to come in and do a strand test (mix equal parts perm lotion and peroxide and put a strand of her hair into the mix). If the hair gets hot, bubbles or breaks then you know she has got some sort of metallic salt build up on the hair shaft.


Why would a powder lightener make the hair hot to touch?

I previously had dyed blonde hair and went to a salon to have some darker bits put through to break up the blonde. It went khaki green, dull and grey!

The salon refunded me so I went to a new salon which put a pre-lightener on and a full head of highlights. The hair that was left out of the foils is still green and can be seen between the highlighted hairs, which turned out great.

What can I do to hide this green? It is making my life miserable!

This is colour correction work and you need to go see someone who understands the process of gentle cleansing and deep cleansing of hair. The greenish hue is created when a flat colour with no warmth is applied to pre-lightened hair; this is down to inexperience with complicated colour work. The hair grabs onto the colour pulling in the shade too deeply because it is porous from being bleached.

Remember to tell the colourist your hair history, and maybe go armed with some ideas of what you want to achieve. Once the colour has been fixed remember to condition it well and keep it moisturised.”


I had highlights done on my

hair which has turned khaki green, dull and grey!

I got my hair done three months ago; I had a scene haircut and green highlights. The hairdresser bleached my hair first and then put the colour on after. Now that the colour has faded, will the bleached part fade to? If not, what can I do to bring it back as fast as possible to my natural colour which is black?

Unfortunately the bleach in your hair won’t fade and will remain in your hair until it grows out or is cut out. To achieve your desired natural colour as fast as possible I’d suggest a visit to your salon to have it coloured. Don’t attempt this yourself as your hair needs a pre-pigment colour applied first before the target shade is achieved, for it to be the correct colour and for it to hold.

Hi Casandra,

Your question should be simple to answer, depending on the condition and length of your hair. An ebony black colour should look great on you too.

I would recommend you ask your stylist, who applied the green colour, if your hair condition is good enough to take a beautiful black. A professional stylist or colour expert will give you on-site advice. In most circumstances, and with hair in good condition, a black colour should cover bleached hair quite easily.

As an alternative you could go to another salon, one that has an expert colourist to give you a second opinion. However, it is essential that you only let a professional hairdresser do your colour. Do not try it at home; it could end up in tears and unnecessary stress.

How can I get my hair back to its natural colour after having it bleached?

If the top part of your hair is the colour you like and the bottom is the problem, then I suggest that you lighten the underneath again to the same level as the top, and then tone it with a platinum/white toner to even it all out.

The back of the head is tricky to do yourself so I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing and can see clearly where needs to be lightened and toned.


I’m trying to get my hair to a white blonde/platinum colour. After the last attempt my top half went platinum, but the bottom half is slightly darker, and uneven!

Will a white toner correct this, and what can I do to even it out?
