...for...this ministry...overϔlows with many thanksgivings to God. Thank you! In the short month since arriving at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, the word/phrase that best summarizes my experience is Thank you. Yes, my time has been full with various tasks expected of a pastor. For being able to serve meaningfully and then be encouraged by your expressions of gratitude, the best response I can give is Thank you. I am continually impressed by the diverse abilities and efforts, yet common focus we can see at KMLC. Already twice now – at the post ofϐice and at the grocery store (My “work clothes” set me apart from other shoppers.) – someone has asked me which parish? When I answered Kountze, I heard words highly praising the work of this congregation. For the chance to receive such comments, I say Thank you. This seems to me an example of Saint Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 9, quoted above. The Apostle is encouraging these Christ-followers to participate in an offering for famine relief. In his words, I picture an upward spiral. An act of generosity circles around to a response of gratitude which rises as praise to God. This recognizes that humans are involved in God’s work. We acknowledge the other person’s actions saying to her/him, Thank You! And, when we see this interaction of deeds and words as part of God’s care for creation, God seems to enjoy the whole process. I learned this early in my career from a wise woman-elder who, as she was leaving the worship service, said to me, I praise God and thank you… My wife, Donna, joins me as we Praise God! and Thank you! for your welcome into this shared ministry of Kountze. This six-week Bible Study is being offered on Mondays (6 PM) and repeated on Wednesdays (11 AM).

What can we expect to ind when we open the Old Testament? Are there stories and themes that disturb us? What gifts does the Old Testament offer its readers? Is there a chapter you would like to discuss? The study is led by Dr. Richard Sieling.

Heritage Series: Introduction to the Liturgy To give priority to the return of a regular Bible Study and so as not to run

concurrent evening Adult Ed courses, Pr. Hall’s examination of Frank Senn’s Introduction to the Liturgy will resume for a four-week study in November. See the next Good News for more details.

Faith in Action

Church Picnic

What a wonderful day for Kountze Memorial! Approx. 350 children, youth, and adults attended our annual church picnic. There were plenty of fun activities for children, including the slip’n’slide, bounce house, face painting, playground, balloons, photo booth, and ield games, as well as prizes and trivia for the adults. The food was also a hit! We wish to thank the dozens of volunteers who helped make this event a success by preparing the food on Saturday, loading and unloading the church van, serving in the kitchen, setting up, greeting, cleaning up, helping with games, serving sno cones, and many other tasks.

Rally Sunday

The Sanctuary, Sunday school area, and Youth Center were a buzz in September with children, youth, and families returning for the fall programming year. Children were able to register for classes, meet their teachers, and learn more about all the activities happening this fall at Kountze. And everyone enjoyed the balloon parade and classroom blessing. Families of all ages are encouraged to participate in faith formation opportunities throughout the year.

Individuals and Families Invited to Serveas Ushers and GreetersSaturdays, Sundays, and Special Services

Ushers and Greeters serve a vital role in the life of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church. Serving as an usher or greeter is a wonderful way to get to know others in our faith community and beyond! Ushers and Greeters are ministers of hospitality who embody God’s welcome and remind all of us to see God in one another. Matthew’s gospel reminds us that God is present especially in the stranger who is welcomed: “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for . . . I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matt. 25:34-35).

Ushers and Greeters get to be among the irst to welcome God’s people to worship every week and

they serve an important role in every worship service. By warmly

and joyfully greeting and seating those in attendance, passing out bulletins, collecting the offering, and assisting with communion, or simply welcoming others, we are

blessed to welcome God’s very self. Typically, the commitment

would be a few Sundays a year, but volunteers are welcome to serve as often or as little as their schedule allows.

For more information or if you and your family are interested in serving as an Usher or a Greeter, please contact Ian Hart ield, Director of Congregational Life at [email protected] or 402-341-7761. Thank you.

Omaha Crop Hunger WalkAfter much soul searching, I

have decided not to promote the Crop Walk for Hunger this year. The primary consideration was the youth of Kountze and their families have always been the driving force behind the success of the Walk and we all know the multitude of demands on families these days (time and money).

I would encourage everyone who has given to the Omaha Crop Hunger Walk in past years to consider directing those funds to the Lutheran World Hunger Appeal (through the envelope system), the Kountze Pantry

and/or the Kountze Free Clinic or to the Capital Campaign (which will help both the pantry and the clinic).

Finally, I want to thank all of you who have walked in or donated to the Omaha Crop Hunger Walk in the past 20 plus years. It has been a joy and a blessing to share this experience with all of you. A special thank you should go out to Norma Pafford and Tootie Rohde for their extra hard work raising money during these past many years.

6 Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church Good News October, 2016

A Message for Stewardship, Fall, 2016by Pastor Dennis A. Anderson

WHY?

You will be seeing that question around KOUNTZE during the next several months.

WHY?

Why what?Let met get to that. In Luther’s

explanation of the First Article of the Apostle’s creed he reminds us that God “Provides me with food and clothing, home and family, daily work, and all I need from day today…..Therefore I surely ought to THANK, and PRAISE, SERVE and, OBEY HIM.”

Really? I work hard for all I have. Right? YES! But who gives me the energy, the opportunity, the raw materials, the spirit? The bottom line is all of life is GIFT! GIFT FROM GOD.

People who recognize this truth

become “GENEROUS” people. The indo-european root for the word “generous” means “birth…life…..to generate.” You know generous people….they generate life, happiness, success. They multiple talents and gifts. The opposite of generous is stingy, the reduction of life.

Now back to “WHY?” Why what? Why do we give? Because we are thankful! Generous people know all of life is GIFT. Generous people multiply gifts and bring LIFE!

So, our stewardship theme this year is:

WHY? ‘CAUSE WE ARE THANKFUL!

(Eph. 5:20 “Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”)

If You are Hospitalized...If you or someone you know is ill,

hospitalized or would like a pastoral visit, please be sure to let the church of ice know, at (402) 341-7761 or e-mail info@kmlchurch. org. The pastors, eucharistic ministers or altar guild ( lower deliveries) would be more than happy to call on you at any time. Thank you.

Help Deliver Altar Flowersto the Sick & Homebound

After the 11 AM service on Sundays, donated altar lower bouquets are taken to hospitalized members, nursing homes or care centers. This is a great way to brighten someone’s day and to grow friendships!

We need two people each week to make deliveries. All ages are welcome to participate in this ministry – families, individuals, friends, etc. Typically, the time commitment is only three Sundays a year.

Please consider using the hours and minutes God has given you to help this ministry continue.

Contact the church of ice at 402- 341-7761 or via email at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

Feeding of the Hundreds Remember the biblical story

about the feeding of ive thousand? Are those kinds of acts happening in our neighborhood today? Yes, in the hundreds! Each week, through the Kountze Memorial Food Pantry, around 400 individuals are provided food. Forty percent of these are children and these hundreds come from approximately 230 households.

The Pantry’s mission, “Feeding the Hungry in Christ’s Name” is achieved through your designated inancial contributions so that food items can be purchased from the Food Bank of the Heartland and ALDI store. In addition, numerous donated food items are received in the food pantry blue barrel in the west entryway. And, many of you volunteer your service and thus God’s mission is ful illed through the pantry. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.

Though many have been served

and seems that the mission should be complete, there are still individuals whose food stability is fragile…the need to feed the hungry continues. This holiday season we will once again invite you to help provide food and money so that holiday food bags can be distributed. Be sure to watch for more details to come very soon for this annual event.

Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work” (II Corinthians 9: 8). As Lutherans we would respond, “This is most certainly true!” And the guests of Kountze Memorial food pantry say “thanks be to God!”

October Book Club Selection “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel” by Robin Sloan

This is an old school mystery set irmly in tech loving, modern day

San Francisco. Clay Jannon lands a job at a bookstore with very few patrons and even fewer purchases. His curiosity leads him to an even bigger conspiracy at play. As Clay and friends unravel the puzzles of Mr. Penumbra’s book shop, the story turns into sort of a nerdy heist, with real life gadgets, secret societies, and a lot of things to say about the past, present, and future of reading.

Omaha Street School Kitchen Remodel

The KMLC Social Ministry Committee, through the leadership of Vicar Suzanne How and a generous grant from the Endowment, recently completed a kitchen remodel at the Omaha Street School, an accredited educational institution that empowers the lives of at risk youth through personalized education, life skills training, and a moral code in a Christ-centered environment. This important project, which included new looring, countertops and backsplash, electrical, cabinet hardware, a disposal, new paint, and a refrigerator, will allow the school to better serve the nutritional needs of their students.

We recently received this thank you note from the school: “There are no words to express our gratitude for the awesome new kitchen. We wish we could have captured the faces of the students as they entered the kitchen for breakfast. Priceless! Your generosity in time, materials, and appliances, is amazing. Please thank the entire committee. It is because of partners like you that we can give our students a real chance at education! Thank you and blessings to you.”

The Omaha Street School opened its doors in January 1999 with four students. Today enrollment ranges from 25 to 30 with an average classroom size of 8 students. OSS is

af iliated with the Street School Network (SSN), which has over 40 schools in its network of inner-city Christian based schools. Students at the Omaha Street School feel that they are valued as individuals, that they matter and that they are part of a nurturing family. Among the caring and compassionate instructors, staff, and volunteers, they ind hope and gain self-esteem while increasing valuable self-suf iciency skills along with their education.

Linda Reimer, Director of Development and Marketing will be our guest speaker at the Adult Forum on Sunday, October 16.
