MISSION STATEMENT

In light of Church documents, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Reno, in partnership with parents, are committed to fostering gospel values, academic excellence and life-long service in a faith-

centered community.

In this Lenten Season it is truly a gift to be involved in Catholic Education. Stu-dents in Catholic schools can learn and live the Good News of Christ’s resurrec-tion and openly express their faith and gratitude. Thank you for choosing Catholic schools for your children and believing in the benefits of a faith based education that recognizes the whole child, and seeks to bring out the best ca-pabilities of all of the students.

In order to assure that our schools are highly effective in teaching the Catholic faith, it is important that you know about the Western Catholic Educa-tion Association (WCEA) accrediting process. Catholic Identity is infused throughout the protocol at both the elementary and secondary level. In the

elementary school process, referred to as Improving Student Learning (ISL), a school’s effec-tiveness with Catholic Identity is measured by reviewing numerous aspects of Catholic Iden-tity. Secondary school accreditation has similar WCEA accreditation principles. The first is “The Authenticity of the School’s Catholic Identity. This principle of WCEA accreditation holds that a school’s Catholic Identity ought to be authentic. Here, ‘authenticity’ has to do with a school’s two-fold orientation: toward God and toward human life. That is, in all its under-standings and operations, the Catholic school is simultaneously oriented toward God and toward the formation of a human being-within himself and in relation to others. This is for-mation in Christ and in culture.” A few of the specific standards regarding Catholic Identity include; Catholic Purpose, Worship and Religion Curriculum .

With this said, schools in the Diocese of Reno are filled with gratitude for our Catholic Identity, and the well-defined and faith-based standards to which we are held in meeting these standards. This is the reason that we are able to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, during Lent, Easter, Christmas, and every day!

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month Did you know? The Charter for the Protection of Children and Y oung People was es-tablished by the USCCB in June 2002. It is a comprehensive set of procedures for addressing allegations of abuse of minors. The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People includes guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability, and prevention of future acts of abuse.

Consider donating to the scholarship fund, which is available to qualifying students in any of our catholic schools as funds are available: http://www.catholicrenoscholarship.org or Karen Barreras, 775-326-9430 or [email protected]

Check out our new Logo for the D.O.R.S. Scholarship:

Safe Environment training is taking place in all dioceses of the United States. Over 2 million clergy, employees, and vol-unteers have been trained to prevent and respond to the abuse of children. Contact your local coordinator to find out how you can get involved.

In our Diocese contact Elda Juarez, 775-326-9445.

Recent statistics tell us one out of every four girls, and one out of every six boys, are assaulted before they turn 18. If those statistics are correct, on every Sunday in our congregation are people who have been abused and are feeling the pain of that abuse. Reaching out to all victims of abuse is critical in bringing hope and the love of Christ to them. Our diocese is here to provide anyone suffering from abuse with steps towards healing.

Honoring the Lenten Season at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School

As we look to celebrate and reflect during the Lenten Season at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, our response is sincere gratitude for all we’ve been blessed with, AND to use that to propel us to give back. Check out all that our students are up to and pray about participating with us:

Operation: Easter Basket in partnership with Catholic Charities, we are gathering Easter baskets, supplies or funds, to share God’s love with chil-dren Sunday, April 9th from noon to 3pm at the St. Vincent’s Dining Room. Blanket Drive: Campus Ministry is in need of fleece material or funds to purchase material so students can make blankets for the Linus Project, whose mission is to bless homeless or hospitalized children with new, comforting blankets. Rice Bowl! For the last 30 years Catholic Relief Ser-vices’ Rice Bowl helps the poor and needy around the world. BMCHS stu-

dents will individually be raising funds and donating to fill their own ‘rice bowl’ they will then donate to Catholic Re-lief Services at the end of the Lent season to make a difference around the world. Social Media Challenge: We’re so proud! 51 BMCHS students have willingly signed up to give up ALL social media platforms for Lent. At the end of Lent, they will write a short reflection paper sharing their experience. Stay strong, and off the screen, Miners!

learning and love their neighbor.

LOVE AND SERVICE IN THE LENTON SEASON

The 40-day Lenten Season at Our Lady of the snows School includes the following service projects, special events and prayerful reflections:

Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl: Students are challenged to join the Lenten faith-in-action program known as CRS Rice Bowl We’ve teamed up with 13,000 faith communities across the United States to join together to bring lifesaving aid for millions of individuals living in conditions of poverty around the world. A simple cardboard box inspires prayers, fasting and almsgiving within Catholic families across the United States and delivers hope to millions around the world. The hun-gry are fed; the thirsty are given drink; the homeless find shelter.

Ash Wednesday: School Mass and distribution of ashes

Lent Calendar of Kindness: The Calendar of Kindness is a school-wide project sponsored by the Student Council – every day a different act of kindness helps us grow closer to God as we journey together through Lent.

Stations of the Cross: An important devotional tool at Our Lady of the Snows School is the Prayer of Stations. By focusing on the key events of Jesus’ 1st day, students enter into a deep-er understanding and experience the passion of Christ so that they might be ready to cele-brate Easter with new joy and freedom. The Prayer of Stations will be presented to the whole school during Lent; the first led by the 8th grade and again led by the kindergarten class. Final-ly, the “living” Stations will be presented by the kindergarten and 8th grade.

Lenten Reconciliation Service: Two Reconciliation services are held for students and offer them the gift of grace, a way to God, and a way back to God. Through self-examination and acknowledging failings through Reconciliation, students commit to making things right with God, with others and with themselves.

Triduum Retreat: The morning of Holy Thursday, we hold a Triduum Retreat for the whole school. Families are invited to join us for this very special retreat which is designed to give everyone a preview of the Triduum; Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday/Resurrection Sunday.

Easter Basket Drive for Catholic Charities: Student Council is collecting baskets, treats and small toys/activities to donate to Catholic Charities Easter Basket drive for homeless children. Baskets will be assembled during lunch times by Snows students and delivered to Catholic Charities by the staff.

On Saturday, March 4, ten Little Flower students traveled (in spite of a threatening snow-storm) to Jesuit High School in Sacramento to compete in the Junior High Academic Decathlon. The Decathlon is a competition for students in grades 6-8. There are ten events: Roman Catholic Doctrine, English, Litera-ture, Science, Mathematics, Cur-rent Events, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Logic, and a final Super Quiz.

Little Flower was one of two teams new to the competition and we were thrilled to take home two honors. Lloyd Gonzales, 8th grade, took second place out of 23 northern California Catholic schools in the subject of English and FIRST in the writing competition. We are extremely proud of Lloyd! He and the whole team are a blessing and an inspiration to all of us.

Father,

Guide us in our efforts. Inspire and motivate us…. to share our time

and talent for the benefit of students.

Strengthen us in our purpose and push us beyond our comfort zones.

Let us realize that what we do today, results in a solid, faith-filled education for students

who are reaching out for your blessings.

We pray that we will always carry out your will through

hospitality, generosity and love.

The students from St. Teresa School celebrated a Reading Week, March 6-10, with character dress up days, guest readers, Dr. Seuss accessory day, and a “drop everything and read” day. Students were permitted to wear their pajamas as a special treat.

Dr. Seuss’ assistant for a day, Fr. Chuck, stopped by for a visit and took time to

read to the kindergartners.

Even our Superintendent of Schools, Mrs. Barreras, dropped everything to read to

the first graders.

A Kindergarten student complimented Mrs. Barreras on her reading skill by saying that she read “with great fluency’”!

Programs Infants | 8 weeks – 1 Year | “Butterflies” | The infant program at Holy Child Early Learning Center is designed to promote the development of secure attachments while providing flexibility to meet the individual needs of each child. Social and emotional development for infants revolves around a daily routine of feeding, toileting/diapering, and play times. Individual attention is accomplished during these routines of personal care, all of which offer opportunities for initiating enjoyable language, experience, and social interactions.

Young Toddlers & Older Toddlers | 1 Year to 2 Years | “Dragonflies” & “Ladybugs” | Toddlerhood is an incredi-bly important time in your child’s development. It is a time when language, social, cognitive and physical skills are grow-ing at an exponential rate. Toddlers are constantly learning and use all of their senses to explore the world around them. Our teachers help to encourage their curiosity by providing a safe, loving and active learning environment. We teach through what children do best: Play! By combining planned activities and open-ended experiences, toddlers are allowed to move at their own pace and learn through discovery.

Young Preschoolers | 2 Years | “Crickets” | The preschool years lay the foundation for the rest of a child’s education. It is at this time that a child’s self esteem is most significantly shaped and the time when their relationship to school and learning is also shaped. When children are engaged and hav-ing fun, they are learning. Our preschool program is process oriented and focused on three centered learning – Children learn best when they are wholly engaged – mind, body, and emotions. We provide experiences and activities that involve a child’s active participation. Process oriented – The process (vs. product) is at the heart of our efforts with children. Lots of wonderful creations will come home with your child, and you may have no idea what they are. The magic is in the process.

Preschool – Younger Kids | 3 Years | “Honey Bees” | Our preschool class is designed to prepare three-year-olds for pre-kindergarten. There is a strong focus on the development of social/emotional skills. Raising an eager learner is the goal, and it can be achieved through play and day-to-day activities.

Preschool- Older Kids | 4 Years | “Love bugs” | Our preschool class is designed to prepare four-year-olds for pre-kindergarten. There is a strong focus on the development of social/emotional skills. Raising an eager learner is the goal, and it can be achieved through play and day-to-day activities.

Pre-Kindergarten | 4-5 Years | “Fireflies” | Our pre-Kindergarten class is designed for four and five-year-olds. There is a strong focus on the development of self-regulation skills. The goal is to prepare children to enter kindergar-ten with the skills and behaviors necessary to be successful in future learning.
