The Use of Tape Recordersin Our Church

In a recent conference w i t h t he o th er m i ni s te r s b e re tit HeadquartersChurch, Mr. Armstrong made a final decision about the use of taperecorders in Church services and College classrooms. You need toknow WHY such a decision was made!

D URING the ministerial conferences in January, the subject oftape recording was discussed.Tape recorders were becoming a majorconsideration in the Church services, atthe annual Holy Day meetings, and toa small extent, even in the Collegeclassrooms. The question which arose at that timeconcerned w hether everyone shouldmake his own tape recordings, orw hether one person should be authorized to do so. It was already becomingclear that we had to reduce the number of those making tape recordings. As a result of that discussion, it wasdecided to permit Mr. C. O. Battles, ofthe Headquarters Church here in Pasadena, to be responsible for taking thesermons on tape, dubbing them andmailing them out to those who wouldbe interested.Mr. Norman Smith, an ordainedEvangelist, and Radio Studio Technician, was designated as the Minis ter incharge of these recordings. However, new factors have come toour attention, and many more pointshave since had to be considered. Thequestion which has finally come to ourattention is wh et he r we o ug ht to p er mi trecordings of sermons or classroom dis-

by Garner Te d Armstrongcussions to be made and distributed generally among members.

Why This Is God's ChurchYou need to understand WHY such adecision had to be reviewed! This is the Church of God-not ofHerbert W. Armstrong, or of somegroup of men-but the Church of GOD!God RULES in His Church. Jesus Christis the living, active HEAD of this Church, and it is He who guides and leads Histrue ministers into greater knowledgeand unders tanding (Eph. 5:26) .In most churches, if such a s ituationarose, the ministers would immediatelybegin considering the "feelings" of thepeople! They would reason out whether

or not the PEOPLE would "go along"with their decision or not.H it was obvious that a large number of people were affected, and sumsof money might be involved-theywould almost invariably decide-NOTwhat is GOD'S WILL on the subjectbut W HA T W IL L PLEASE THE PEOPLE!But this isn't like other churchesit is GOD'S Church. We cannot reason in this manner, and, praise to our Creator, we DID notreason in this manner in the recentmeeting. We tried to find, instead, what

is for the GOOD of the people-what isGOD'S WILL in the matter!

That is another of the sure proofs ofGod's Church! Some Pitfalls to Avoid

Many of you are affected by this decision-you need to face a few coldfacts and realize why it was made.First, there is ample informationfrom those who own and use tape recorders themselves concerning some ofthe hazards and pitfalls of their use.For example, one owner and user ofa tape recorder said his recorder wasbecoming a crutch-that there was atendeacy to daydream, to assure himself what he didn't manage to take downon notes, or whatever he missed in theactual sermon or the class-he couldalways get later on.Brethren-let's face the plain truth! Many who have utilized tape recordershave repeatedly DOZED through manysermons-simply because they were convinced they would find time to "listento it later," and so they MISSED the vitalpersonal""" message-the direct contactwith God's minis ters AT THE TIME OFTHE SERMON-putting it off untilLATER!We should all understand human

    2/12

Page 2nature enough to know how easy it isto convince yourself you're going tofaithfully study the tape later-and thenkeep putting it off until it is forgotten .Meanwhile, the actual inspired deliveryof the message was missed!

There is the psychological pitfall involved of the attitude of the "observer."That is, the " technic ian" who, sittingeither at the side, in the front, or evenbehind the minis ter who is earnest lyaddressing God's people, is more concerned with getting a "good tape" fromthe sermon than DRINKING IN of theWORD OF GOD-letting the sermon apply PERSONALLY, INDlVlDlJALLY, lettingthe self be CORRECTED! It is easy tobelieve the minister doesn't mean ME!Tape recorders only make it easier tobelieve this.

A Financial BurdenOn the retai l market , t he averagerecorder costs from $180.00 to $400.00.Mr. Battles was able to offer the ma

chines at a savings, for $150.00. H ow-et.er, when you consider the averagefinancial ability of the members of thisChurch, and when you cons ider theresponse to the recent call for fundsto build a house for God's name CANSO MANY OF YOU REALLY AFFORD ATAPE RECORDER?Consider this!At the lowest possible price of $150.00per machine, and an additional 25 to30 dollars invested for tapes (which iscertainly a conseriatiie estimate), notto even calculate the TIME consumedwith the pure mechanics of recording, dubbing additional tapes, etc., the mos tconservative estimate would be in theneighborhood of $175.00 per person foreach recorder!Probably around 300 are present lyutil izing tape recorders in the Church! At this LOW estimate, that means thestaggering sum of SEVENTEEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS is tiedup in tape recording machines!Such an overwhelrnina sum of moneycould well mean th e difference betweenbui ld ing and not building the tabermcle!

Brethren-if Mr. Armstrong has tosend special letters to PLEAD with youfor a pledge for the tabcrnacle-certunly we can 't afford to spend, collectively. a g reat sum such as this on taperecorders! Is I t a Study Aid?

Here at the College. some few haverecorded cer ta in of the Bible classes. However, God's Coll eae is DlFFERENTfrom other colleges! The professor doesnot simply lecture the students-whereupon they MEMORIZE what he said!Rather. the student is invited to ques-t ion-to do individual research on the

The GOOD NEWSquestions presented in class. Oftentimes, the instructor may present new ideason prophecy , ask questions of the classabout i t - thus the whole class forms aresearch body-and many new pointshave come to light in thi s manner .But-when, for example , some ideasmay lat er pr ove to be inadequa te , andare revised, the class is corrected on it-and all grow in knowledge. But consider the tape recordings. In the meantime, some may be listening to tapes of oldclasses-and the material discussed mayalready have been altered by the timethe tape is played the second time!

One woman, who had been studyinga series of recorded classes said: "I havequit studying with these tapes since Ihave not iced the things said are sometimes revised."

Not everyone has the capabilitiesof research. Not everyone has the"schooled" mind to follow and com-prehend that which is presented in college classrooms. For that reason tapesof college classes, without the personalcontact, the opportunity to ask questionsas they arise, and seeing any illustrationsthe professor may pu t on the boardsuch rapes are not an aid, but may proveto be a hindralge to real study.

The Feast DaysMany of the brethren have wanted topreserve the tapes of sermons deliveredat the Feas t of Tabernacles-some for

their own study, others, presumably, fortheir familie s or friends-or perhapsfor other interested people they hopeto convert.

Fir st and foremost, our Church services are not for the uNconverted, butfor the FLOCK OF GOD! I f you haveunconverted friends, ask them to l is tento the broadcast, or write for the magaLine and bookletS-DO NO T bring themto Church, or play tapes of Churchservices to them.Undoubtedly, tape recordings havebeen the direct reason for SOME in God'sChurch TO STAY AWAY FROM THEFEASTS because they have been led tobel ieve they can get the same amountof good our of a tape recording as fromthe Feast itself!Brethren! I f this were true-Godwould command NO ONE TO COME!The minist ers could all preach to aroom full of squeaking tape recorders, and send them to all the members intheir homes!

But this is NOT God's way!God tells us to feed the flock with"meat in due season!" "Canning" thespiritual meat, and t ryi ng to diges t itOUT of season is often l ike man 's overdone efforts to eat summer fruit in win ter by refrigeration, to eat tropical fruitsin cold climates, and vice versa! Thatmeans the INDIVIDUAL is decidingWHEN

May, 1958t he "due season" has arrived!

Tape recordings remove the responsibility from many who are the heads ofhouseholds . In st ead of r aking notesand growing in the ability to ieacb(which is VITALLY important, as Ishowed you in the last issue in thearticle "God's Work is Waiting onYOu") they rely totally on getting themessages down on TAPE! I ns tead ofTEACHING their wives and famiJiesthey s imply let them hear a "canned"rendition of the same sermon.

The li ter al dozens of recorde rs thatare brought to the Feasts at Gladewaterpresent a problem of space- -overloadedelectric lines-hampering of the speaker systems, and a constan t source of disturbance. Frequently, one wil l forget, and replay part of a s ermon very loudly -or squeaks and squawks wi ll comefrom a tape recording machine. Whena tape runs to the end and begins torapidly spin-the owner mus t leap upto take care of it, thus attracting theattention of the audience-AWAY fromthe vital messages of God during thesetrying times!

What Was DecidedThose of us ill the ministry are re

gretful we did not realize the great magnitude of the problem sooner. Had werealized it fully, we would have saidsomething in time to save some of youaddit ional money you may have alreadyspent on recording equipment.

However, if we are Gon's Church,we cannot simply shrug off our responsibility, and, knowing it will worka slight hardship on some, avoid COR-RECTING the s ituation even though weare late in doing so!It has been decided by the ministersin the headquar te rs Church to excludeand p rohibi t t ap e recordings of ourChurch Services, Bible studies and College classes.

The Church does fully expect to supply the blind with tape recordings ofour booklets and magazines when possible. Tape recorders may be of usefor some whose working hours do notpermit them to hear the broadcast regularly. They can be taped for privat e useat home to be heard later. Tape recorders are also useful for a speech professor, for example-when he deems itnecessary, or a minister may ASK oneof our radio studio technicians to recorda cer ta in sermon should he desire-butcarrying tape recorders to services anddistributing tapes among brethren hasto be discontimted.'In the long run, this decision is goingto mean INCREASED GROWTH for theChurch-NOT a handicap! You can't carry your tape recorders onthe wav to a place of safety when we(Please continue on page 10)

    Who Built the GREATPYRAMID?

Cheops NOT an IdolaterCheops was no t a polytheist. He wasa worshippe r of the One God. "Cheepsclosed the temples and prohibited theEgyptians from offering sacrifices,"wrote Herodotus in book II of hisHistory, 124. The God whom Cheopsserved was named "Amen" in Egyptian.(Please continue 011 page 5)

the Pyramid is often called the Pyramidof Cheops today.Who was Cheops or Khufu? Whenand why did he bui ld th e pyramid?

Cheops NOT an Egyptian! The Egyptians like to boast abouttheir pyramids. Yet the greatest pyramidof all they admit was not built byan Egyptian! And they admit t ha t allthe ir l ater copies of the Great Pyramidare quite infe rior to the first one bu il tby Khufu. The Egyptian his torian

Manetho, who lived in the thirdcentury before Christ, wrote that Khufu"was of a DIFFERENT RACE" from theEgyptians (Wathen's Arts and Antiquities of Egypt, p. 54).Herodotus, the Farnous Greek historian of the 5th century before Christ, states that the builders of the GreatPyramid were SHEPHERDS (Euterpe128). But the Egyptians were no tshepherds! Notice Genesis 46:31-34:"And Joseph said unto his brethren. . . I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and myfather's house ... are come unto me;and the men are shepherds. . . . And it

shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shallcall you, and shall say, What is youroccupation? That ye shall say, Thyservants' trade hath been about cattle,.. . FOR EVERY SHEPHERD IS AN ABOMINATION UNTO THE EGYPTIANS."The Egyptians were not shepherds. They employed others to tend theircattle. Yet Khufu, or Cheops, the bui lder of the Great Pyramid, was a shepherd!Josephus, the Jewish historian, wrote

that the Egyptians set the Israel ites "tobuild pyramids" (Antiquities of theJews, bk. II, ch, ix, 1 t . But the pyramids which the Israelites bui lt dur ingtheir enslavement were hastily constructed, inferior duplicates of the first mightyPyramid of Khufu or Cheops. Who wasCheops the shepherd who bui lt the firstPyramid?

Secrets of th e Pyramid Lost! When the Arabs invaded Egypt over1100 years ago, they found the secretsof the Great Pyramid totally lost. Evenits entrance was unknown. The ArabCaliph Mamoon, in the 9th century afterChrist, blindly cut into the Pyramid

hoping to find bur ied t reasure in it. Heaccidental ly reached one of the inter iorpassageways-but no bur ied treasure!

But Mamoon only REOPENED theGreat Pyramid. In the days of JesusChrist, the true entrance to th e GreatPyramid was open and regularly fre-quented by tourists. The entrance to itwas forgotten in the days of the Catholic domina tion of Egypt-before thecoming of the Moslem Arabs.Strabo, the ancient Roman historian, expressly states that in his day the GreatPyramid was accessible to visi tors: "I thas on its side," he states, "a s tone whichcan be moved. When it has been liftedup, a tortuous passage is seen whichleads to the tomb" (bk, xvii, p. 808).Dr. Meredith and I climbed up to thisancient entrance on the north sic1f:' ofthe Pyramid. The entrance used todayby tourists is, however, the forced entrance cut out by the Arabs. At the tr ueent rance to the Great Pyramid we sawthe hieroglyphic carving containing thename of the mighty builder of thisarchitectural wonder of the ancientworld. His name in Egyptian is spel ledKhufu by modern writers. The Greeksspelled his name Cheops. That is why

Here are surprising facts you should know-facts uncovered as aresult of the trip by Dr. Meredith and Mr. Hoeb last summerin Egypt!by Herman L. Hoeh

of one of the chambers. We found thefloor of the "King's" chamber flagrantlyOut of level. All this speaks of remarkable HUMAN WORKMANSHIP-but doesit speak of a divine revelation, as pyra-midologists theorize? If this mightyarchi tectural wonder is a divine revelation, where is the divine perfection?Yet the Great Pyramid IS one of thewonders of the world. It is the only oneof the seven wonders of the ancientworld which s ti ll remains. Surely thereis some significance in its endurance

through the ages-and especially sincethis Pyramid, missing its capstone, isfound engraved on our money. Whyshould we-the children of Joseph-engrave this Egyptian Pyramid on ourmoney? Who was actually responsiblefor the building of this marvel of theages?

W HO did build the Great Pyramidat Gizeh, Egypt?-when andwhy was it bui lt ?Is there some supe rnatur al revelation hidden in its mighty stones? Wasthe pyramid built to make the Bibleclear and understandable? Are thetheories of the pyramidologists true? And what about the "pyramid inch"- i s it equal to a year in prophecy? Canchronology be accurately determinedonly by the pyramid?

What We Found at GizehOpposite Cairo, across the Nile River, lies the most famous architectural wonder of the world-the Great Pyramidat Gizeh. It is still the world's mostmassiue building. For 3500 years it wasalso the world's tallest building. Onlyin this last generation has man builttaller buildings than the Great Pyramid.

Yet the Empire State Building in NewYork-the highest building on earth today-is only about 2/5 the size of theGreat Pyramid! The Cambridge Ancient History, Vol.1, page 281, declares of the Great Pyramid: "... its perfect building compelsour admiration; its alignment [with thepoints of the compass} is mathematicallycorrect; often one Cannot insert a penknife between the joints of the stone.""The Great Pyramid is so incrediblyprecise that compass errors can bechecked against it." writes LeonardCot tre ll in his recen t book The Motmtains of Pharaoh.Dr. Meredith and I visited the pyramids twice while in Egypt. We foundthe external appearance of the GreatP.yramid ruined by the Arabs. For centuries they have carted away and usedthe polished white casing stones which

once made the Pyramid gleam in thesun and moonlight. But the i nte riorof the Pyramid remains an archi tecturalmarvel. The stones within have notmoved a hai r' s-b read th since the daythe workmen fixed them in place. Theflatness of the surfaces of the stonesand the squareness of their corners areextraordinary. Uterally acres of polishedstone surfaces-equal to opticians' workof the present day-line the passages ofthe Great Pyramid. But not all is per fect workmansh ip .Human imperfection is noticeable in therough, unf inished masonry on the floor

Editor's Comment: These letters surelyought to make us p r ~ y more diligentlyfor the many people who are comingto a knowledge of the truth. Great thingsare ahead for God's Church. Must God'sWork wait on you, or are you stirredto action? Are you going to study andpray more diligently? Are you strivingmore in overcoming the weakness ofthe flesh so that you might be usedmore effectively by God in His work?

Editor's Comment: These are two ofmany letters coming in about miraculoushealings. Since the letters of healings appeared in The PLAIN TRUTH recently,we have received letters telling of divinehealing by God of the following ailments: rupture, diabetes, hepatitis, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, ulcers, pneumonia, and many other ailments. God is truly working in HISChurch!Adventist Church TeachingsQuestioned"I have been in a commandmentkeeping church for 22 years and find

that I don 't know too much about theBible. There is one thing I would liketo be straightened out on. Our churchhas a lady prophetess and we are taughtthat no other church has the spirit ofprophecy. Somehow I don't go alongwith that teaching, in fact there hasbeen a veil between her and me. Mostof our people depend wholly on herbooks instead of the Bible to get thesermons uver to us. Most of our peopleswallow it hook, s inker and all. Theremay be a few who don't-s-I can onlyspeak for myself. Will you please giveme an answer from the Bible?"One Sabbath not too long ago ourteacher told his class that the time wouldcome when we could not eat any meatat all. Greatest PASSOVERModern Times!Hundreds more brethren are now able to attend Passover seruicesin t he places GOD selects.

    by Roderick C. Meredith

    in

THIS WAS a record year for attendance at the Passover and Festivalof Unleavened Bread in the modern history of the Church of God. Thenumber is impressive because it represents people whose entire LIVES are sur-rendered to the will and rule of Almighty God!In meetings from the west coast ofAmerica to London, England, and inthe private homes of brethren scatteredall over the world, the memorial ofChrist 's death was celebrated by thou-sands of people whom God has calledout from this world-people whoseentire lives have been changed and converted to a living faith in a risen Christ. Now there are people in every inhabitedcontinent who are hearing and BELIEVING the true message of Jesus Christ. They are learning to LIVE by every wordof God. They no longer look on Christas a dead Saviour-but as a 11l'ing Master and Ruler , whose example they fol-low, whose commandments they OBEY.These men and women are the peopleof God. Together, they form the Churchof God-the earthly body in whichJesus Christ lives and works today!Passover at the TabernacleAs Chris t commanded, God's peopleconvene at this season of the year toobserve the Passover-the memorial ofHis broken body for our physical healing, and His shed blood in payment forour sp iritua l sins. And as Jesus and hisparents remained at Jerusalem to observe " the days" of unleavened bread,so do many hundreds of our breth ren indifferent areas. This year, as usual, the largest Passover service was held at the Tabernacle of God's Church at Gladewater,

Texas. Abour 750 adults par took of thePassover, and over 1000 were presentincluding children-for the Feast andthe preaching services on the annualSabbath.Services at the Tabernacle continuedthroughout the entire seven days ofUnleavened Bread and on the weeklySabbath immediately following. Mr.Armstrong was there to officiate at thePassover and brought many insp iringsermons. He was very ably assisted byMr. Ted Armstrong, Mr. George Meekerand Mr. Norman Smith-as well as Mr.

Kenneth Swisher, our local Gladewaterminister. Also, Mr. Burk McNair and Mr. JonHill drove up from their south Texaschurches to assist with the daily servicesand the preaching. It was an inspiring occasion to everyone, and represented the largest attendance at any Passover festival which wehave record of in modern times. Muchcredit goes to the Deacons and Deaconesses-and many other brethren whohelped them-for all the p lann ing andwork involved in organizing the registration, th e parking, the camping, theserving of meals, and all the other dutiesinvolved in making such a large gathering successful.

California Passover ServicesIn Pasadena, 512 adults took the Passover and over 700 attended the Feast, including children. The Passover services were conducted by Mr. HermanHoeh, with Dr. Meredi th assisting. Itwas a joyous occasion, and the night ofthe Feast the rainy weather cleared upremarkably and a full moon shone. On the first Holy Day, Mr. Hoehbrought two inspi ring sermons on thesignificance of our being the "firstfruits,"and how those of us privileged to becalled during this age will receive a"better resurrection" (Heb. 11:35).Two of. our senior students andprospective ministers, Mr. Charles Dorothy and Mr. Ernest Martin, broughtsermonettes. You will hear more aboutthese two men-for they are both graduat ing in June, and will then probablygo into the work full time.During the days of unleavened bread, nightly Bible studies were conducted byMr. Hoeh and Mr. Meredith. A wide

range of topics and questions were covered, and the visiting brethren had opportunity to have many of their questions answered. On the final Holy Day and weeklySabbath immediately following, all-dayservices were held with pot-luck feastsat midday on the college grounds. Mr.Benjamin Rea and Mr. RoderickMeredith conducted the preaching services for this final port ion of the Feast. In San Diego, there were about 70brethren present for the Passover services and about 90 partook of the Feast,

including chi ldren. Mr. Meredith conducted the services and was ably assisted by Mr. Bryce Clark.Mr. dark is student body presidentof Ambassador College, is a graduatingsenior, and will soon be going into God'sministry full time. I t will be well if wecan acquaint all of you brethren withMr. dark, Mr. Charles Doro thy, Mr.Ernest Martin, and the other men whomwe know by the "fruits" God is callinginto His ministry. Anyone of them maybe serving as your ministe r in the nearfuture, and they all mer it your respectand need yon r p raye rs and encouragernent,About 77 brethren took the Passoverat Fresno, and, including children, about125 attended the Feast. The serviceswere conducted by Mr. J immy Friddle, and he was assisted during the Passoverand in the preaching services by Mr.Benjamin Rea. Mr. Rea IS head of theSpanish Department of the college, andGod is already using him in translatingour booklets into Spanish and s tart ingthe broadcast in the Spanish language.

Passover in the Colorado AreaThe brethren in the area of Lyons andPueblo, Colorado, and Garden City,Kansas, churches all met at Lyons forthe Passover and Feast. As in Gladewater, preaching services were heldtwice daily throughout the festival ofunleavened bread.Mr. Raymond Cole presided, andwas assisted in the preaching daily byMr. Carl ton Smith-local minis ter inthe area-and by Mr. Allen Manteufel, who went over with Mr. Cole for theoccasion. Mr. Manteufel is ano ther ofour graduat ing seniors and will soon begoing into God's work full-time.Many helpful and inspiring messageswere delivered during the Feast, andthe brethren who could attend weregreatly benefited. The attendance at thePassover was 133 adults, and about 275were present at the Feast, includingthose not yet baptized.

In Portland, Mr. Raymond McNairconducted the Passover services. About125 adults were pres ent, and around250 attended the Feast and first holy daywhich was held for all three Oregonchurches at Salem. The Salem brethren attended thePassover either at Portland or Eugene. And at Eugene, two of ou r local elderstook charge of th e Passover services.Mr. Basil Wolverton and Mr. RichardPrince came down f rom Port la nd andTacoma, respectively, to "fill in th egap"-so to speak-since there werenot enough minis ters available to holdall the Passover services required. This is an example of what many ofour local elders may need to do in th efuture-as the spiri tual harvest God isgranting seems to incr ease faster thanthe number of ful l- time ministers Hesupplies. More local elders are neededin many areas-and God's Church cangrow proportionately as the se men arewholly yielded and consecrated to Him.In Chicago, th e Passover service andFeast were conducted by Mr. DeanBlackwell, assisted by Mr. Cecil Battles-who has been sent to Chicago withMr. Meeker to help in the visitation program. The Milwaukee brethren camedown for the occasion, and there wereabout 185 adults present at the Passoverand 310 persons attended the joyousFeast the fol lowing night .Mr. Ted Armstrong flew up fromGladewater to conduct th e Passoverse rv ices in St. Louis and the Feast the

So as we emerge from this Passoverseason, let us realize that in future yearsthere MUST be many, many otherchurches and locations around the worldwhere newly begotten brethren in Christcan meet and par take of this ordinance. The responsibility is yours to PRAY andto GIVE so that we may effectively reachthese people who are hungering forGod's truth. If we all persevere to theend, we will be brethren throughout alleternity. This was the greatest Passover seasonin the mode rn histo ry of God's Church. But His Church goes forward-notbackward-especially in this end time.Let us WORK to see that ellery Passoverand Feast is the greates t yet!Let us each strive to be worthy ofChrist's Words "Well done, thou goodand faithful servant."

Use ofTape Recorders(Continued from page 2)

will have to flee! They will be so muchexcess baggage! But if you have theknowledge stored up in your HEARTand your MIND-- it will be YOURS!"Get ting More Out of It "

One of the primary reasons manyfeel the ir tape recorders are a real blessing is they feel they can learn "manyadditional points" from a sermon afterhearing it over the SECOND TIME!But brethren! Had God originally in-tended this, He would have ins truc tedHis ministers to preach a sermon , thenrecall the flock the fol lowing day, andpreach exactly the same sermon overagam!Have you ever wondered why theLAW is commanded to be REPEATED toGod's people? Have you ever wondered abour all the REPETITION in rheBible-the instructions about Christianliving, the examples of the mistakes ofothers? It is for God's ministers to RE-PEAT these principles orally WHENGOD LEADS THEM TO DO IT- in the"due seasons" of the Feasts-on theweekly Sabbaths which have been hallowed and SET APART for THIS VERYPURPOSE!

It may seem to be nice to listen to atape of a sermon while doing someother chore-some farmers may lis tenwhile milking the cows-some women

The GOOD NEWSmay listen while washing dishes, orothers may even play a tape while inbed! But GOD DID NOT INTEND YOU TOBE DOING HOUSEHOLD TASKS AND LIS-TENINGTOHIS SACRED WORDS ATTHESAME TIME! You need to be in theatmosphere of CHURCH, on the HOLYDAY OF GOD, in the presence of Christand His flock, with His own ministersto guide you, and listen in REVERENCEand FEAR to the WORD OF Gon-e-notcasually listen to a "canned" sermonfrom a tape recorder!

Pu t NOT Your Trus t in Man!One other consideration is God's inst ruct ion NOT TO PLACE OUR TRUSTIN MAN! Paul discussed problems ofChurches openly in His correctiveepistles-but Paul was going on record

-WRITTEN record-with what he said!No one could have claimed falsely hesaid something entirely different! Hehad the WRITTEN PROOF TO BACK ITUp! The same is true of God's Church ofthis age! We wiII mention problems inthe pages of the Good News-when wefeel it wiII be beneficial for the WHILECHURCH-but we have a verifiedWRilTEN RECORD of what was said! Not so in tape recording!Brethren , Pau l even warned a groupof his closest ORDAINED ELDERS andMINISTERS in Christ that OF THEIR OWNSELVES MEN WOULD ARISE, SPEAKINGPERVERSE THINGS! Paul did NOTPLACE HIS TRUST IN MEN!Neither can we!A person who allowed a wrong spirit

to take over in his life, who allowed aroot of bitterness to grow and wentou t from God's Church, and whopossessed tapes of our sermons andservices could do untold DAMAGE TOTHIS CHURCH! You may feel with ALLYOUR HEART that such a thing couldnever happen to You-and may Godgrant that it WIll NOT-but the Wordof God shows IT CAN HAPPEN!By clever tape cutt ing and ed it ing, aperverse and totally dishonest enemycould so manipulate and r ear range asermon as to have the minister appearto be using profanity and swearinginstead of sincerely preach ing the trueWord of God!The ministry of this Church MUSTbe obedient to God's commands-weMUST be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves!" We can take no chances. And so, finally brethren-if you havetape recording equipment , and if thisdecision affects YOU, perhaps it wouldbe good to consider selling the equipment. But don't just give it away! Thereare poor bre thren who can be helpedwith the proceeds. Remember, it is bet

ter to lay up treasure IN HEAVEN, thanon the earth!

rogant toward the gods, bu t repentedand wrote the Sacred Book ... a workof great importance" (see Wathen'sAntiquities, p. 268; and Budge's Egypt, vol. II, p. 31).But which Sacred Book?Certainly none of the Sacred Booksof Egypt 's pagan religion-for Cheopsclosed their temples and forbade theirworship. Was this Sacred Book anEgyptian Book? No! Cheops, remember, was of foreign race-and it is quiteobvious that Cheap 's Sacred Book wasnot preserved by Egyptians who lateropposed his religion.A clew to the answer is found inEgypt ian records. Cheops has anothername-Saaru or Shaaru (Petrie's History of Egypt, vol. I, p. 37). Saaru isanother name "for the inhabitants ofMr. Seir" (Rawlinson's History ofEgypt, ch. 22). Khufu, then, was a foreign King f rom Mt. Seir who exerciseddominion in Lower Egypt during andafter the time of Joseph. Petra is inMount Seir. Dr. Mered ith and I visitedt he domain of Cheops , both in Egyptand in Mt. Seir.Mt. Seir was famous in history as the"Land of Uz" (Vol. III of Clarke's Com-mentary, preface to Book of Job). UZwas a descendant of Seir the Horite(Gen. 36:28). The Arabs preserve a

corrupt record of Cheops of Mr. Seir orof the Land of Uz. They call him the"wizard of Oz."Now what individua l who dwelledin Uz was arrogant, repented of hissin and wrote a Sacred Book?None other than JOD!And the Sacred Book is the Book ofJob!Job-as Mr. Armstrong long ago per-ceived-is the Cheops who built the

Great Pyramid! The anc ient Greekscalled Job "Cheops"-pronouncing theletters "ch" almost as if they were an"h." We call Job "Hiob" in Germanand we pronounce the final "b" as if itwere a "p" much as the Greeks did.Plainly, Cheops is but an altered pronunciation of Job!

Job Was a King! When Job was being tested, he criedout that he wished he had died: "Whydied I no t from the womb? why didI not expire when I came out of thewomb. . . . Then had I been at restwith kings and counsellors of the earth, which build desolate places for themselves" (Job 3:11-15).J ob buried with kings?-of course!

He was of a royal family. Notice: "Unto

The second largest pyramid is in thebackground to the right.me men gave ear, and waited, and keptsilence at my counsel. After my wordsthey spake not again. . . . I . . . sat aschief, and dwe lt as a KING in the army,as one that comforteth the mourners"(Job 29:21-25).Job le ft a great monument in stonethe Great Pyramid . It swelled his pride .Bildad, one of Job's friends, tauntedJob: "Thou that tearest thyself in thineanger, shall the earth be forsaken ofthee? Or shall the rock be removed O:.Jtof its p lace" (Job 18:4, Jewish trans.).What?-the ear th not to be forsakenof Job even if he were to die? Of course

    - the rock monument he built wouldremain for ages, would not "be removedout of its place"! What rock manument?-the Great Pyramid! Now turn to Job 38:4-6. Here is God'sresponse to Job- the response which ledMr. and Mrs. Armstrong to think longago that Job was the builder of thePyramid. Notice that the verses presuppose Job a great builder. Let us paraphrase God's answer to Job, then youcompare it with the original: "You, Job,laid the foundations of the Great Pyramid but where were vou when I laid thefoundation of the ea'rth? You, Job, de-

termined the measures on the Pyramidin Egypt, but who determined the measures of the earth and stretched the lineupon it? You, Job, fastened down insockets the foundations of the pyramid, but whereupon are the foundations ofthe earth fastened? You, Job, were notable to lay the Pyramid's capstone, foryour work was not absolutely perfect, but I laid the cornerstone of the earth,"said God.That whittled Job down to size! Hewas not as big as he himself presumed.

Why Pyramid BuiltCheops lived in Joseph's t ime. So didJob! Job lived in the generat ion af terEsau, for one of his fr iends was El iphazthe Temanite (Job 2: 11). Eliphaz wasthe father of the Temanires (Gen. 36:

    11) and the son of Esau, Jacob's brother (ve rse 10). Eliphaz and Joseph werefirst cousins.Yet Job lived before the Mosaic lawwhich permitted only Levites to sacrifice.Notice that Iob sacrificed to God for hisfamily as was customarily done in patriarchal times (Job 1: 5;42: 8).None of the conversation in thebook of Job refers to the exodus under

Moses, but the flood is still uppermostin the minds of the people (Job 22:17-18) .Job lived long before the time ofDaniel. Even in the time of Daniel andthe apostles, the dates for the prophet icfuture were not opened to understanding. If they were not permitted to knowthe times and seasons, certainly Jobwould not have known them, much lessbuilt the pyramid to fit chronology! Yetmany adherents to British-Israelism andpyramidology contend that Cheops didknow all these things. Some of themwould make out God as the real builder!I have beside me now the works ofDavid Davidson, Adam Rutherford, andothers. Each of them tries to build achronology for the future by measuringthe dimensions of the Gre: Pyramid

with the "pyramid inch." Dr. Meredithand I saw the little stone protrusion inthe Pyramid which these people contendis the key to the revelation of the pyramid. But they have no way to knowwhether this little protrusion shouldmeasure the pyramid and de te rminechronology, or whether it was for someother purpose.Even if one has accurately measured

A badly damaged ivory statuette of Cheops from Abydos, Egypt. No otherstatues are known of him. The features of Cheops are distinctly non-Egyptian.Cheops built the great pyramid of Gizeh, near Cairo. It is the first and also thegreatest pyramid ever built .

Page 12the pyramid, how are they going toknow which poin t means which year?Davidson stares with a certain point inthe Pyramid and calls it the day of thecruci fix ion-Friday, Apri l 7, 30 AD.Since that date is proved wrong by theBible, all his chronology falls flat. AdamRutherford takes the same point andcalls it the date of the crucifixion, Friday, April 3, 33 AD. Since tha t dateis wrong, roo, his chronology falls flat.THE OBVIOUS FACT IS THAT NO

STANDARD EXISTS WHICH MIGHT RE-VEAL WHICH STONE OR WHICHSCRATCH ON A PASSAGEWAY MEANSA PARTICULAR YEAR. The pyramid wasbuilt for another purpose than to reveal chronology. We do not yet know thefull purpose for which the Pyramid wasbuilt, but it is a monument, undoubtedlydesigned by Job, to commemorate whatjosepb did for Egypt and to mark theborder of the terri tory given to Joseph'sfamily in the land of Egypt by Pharaoh.Pharaoh gave Israel the land ofGoshen (Gen. 47: 11 ). The land ofGoshen extends from Palestine westward to the Nile River (Gen. 15:18).It included what is now the Suez Canal.

The ancient Pharaoh long ago gave it tothe family of Joseph, but they wish totake it away today! How far south alongthe Nile River does the land of Goshenrun? To the border be tween Lower andMiddle Egypt-in the very region wherethe Great Pyramid is located! Becausethe Great Pyramid stands at the borderberween these tw o divisions uf Egypt, many have taken Isaiah 19: 19-20 to refer to the pyramid. Certainly the "altar"mentioned in this verse is not the pyramid. God forbids any altar of carvedstone (Exodus 20:25-26).Bur the Grea t Pyramid may be thepillar which Isaiah referred to , and it

might be again dedicated in the futureas a pillar or monumen t of witness towhat the Eternal-the Amen-willdo in delivering Egypt from the revivedRoman Empire. A pillar is sometimesused in the Bible as a border Zme (seeGenesis 31:52).We might also consider whether thepyramid was designed by Job to be thetomb or resting place of Joseph's mummy, before it was carried up out ofEgypt by Moses (Exodus 13: 19) .Cheops or Job, according to the ancienthistorians, was not buried in it. Thesarcophagus in the "King's chamber"was empty in ancient times. No treasures Were hidden in the Pyramid's innerrecesses, And it was anciently open tovisitors from Greece and Rome. The Great Pyramid was built, according to Herodorus, OVer a period ofabout 20 years ill the 3 months of eachyear during which the Nile overflowedand the people Were idle. Its construe-

tion therefore did not occupy slave labor, bur idle labor. And through it, perhaps.the Egyptians gained their freedomfrom Pharaoh. Josephus, the Jewish histor ian, states that Joseph did return theland to the Egyptians (AntiquitieJ, bk.II , ch. 7, 7).And what better thank offering couldthe Egyptians have given than donatingof their idle time to build a monumentdesigned and directed by Job as a perpetual witness to the all-ruling God whosent Joseph to save the Egyptians!God's Government is also in the form
