At the far end of the school in the year 6 class rooms. It is lunch time so the rooms are empty. The sky is grey and rain drizzles against the windows. The lights are off and a soft glow comes from the light of a mobile phone laying on the table.

(Violet sits alone in the classroom, reading a text on her phone)

(whispers) Oh my gosh! Can it be true that I could have been named as Head Girl? I need to do something about this.

(Harry enters)

Harry, is the text you sent right? That I could have been Head Girl, not Lucy?

Yes, I think so. The boys were talking about it during the match. What are you going to do?

(looking serious) She can’t get away with this, we need to take back what is rightfully mine. I deserve to be head girl.

(nervously) What do you mean “we”?

You’re my best friend Harry, only you can help me.

Umm

You know I would do it for you. Go to the Christmas tree by the library, I saw Lucy there earlier wrapping presents for the party after school.

(looking unsure) What do you want me to do with them?

Hide them, that way Mr Hooke will think she hasn’t wrapped them and will be disappointed, then we can (makes air quotes) find them and take them to him. He will be so pleased he might reconsider his choice for Head Girl.

(Harry looks uncomfortable, and shifts his weight. Violets points at the door, Harry nods and exits).

(Violet paces the room, checking her phone for updates from Harry)

(whispers) oh what is taking him so long? Lunch time will be over soon.

(Harry runs in carrying multiple wrapped presents)

Violet I’ve done it! But they know there are gone already, I heard some year 5s behind me saying the presents had been stolen!

Why did you bring them here? (thinking) Quickly, give them to me: I’ll take them to the year 4 cloakroom, if Mr Hooke finds them first, he will think the year 4s took them. We will be in the clear.

(holding up his had) Shh I think I hear something

(Violet and Harry lean with a hand to their ear as if listening intently)

(off stage) Lucy this is so unlike you. You have really let the school down

(off stage) I know Mr Hooke, I’m sorry I just don’t understand what happened.

(off stage) I am so disappointed.

(Back on stage Violet claps her hands happily, her plan is working)

Right I’ll go and hide the presents, you stay here and come up with another plan on how to ensure I become Head Girl. I’m counting on you Harry.

(Violet leaves with the presents and Harry is left alone looking scared and confused)

Who knows what Year 6 is like better than you?

Because everything this year has been so different, the current Year 5s have not had the same transition in to Year 6 that you had.

Last year, Miss Malpas and Miss Joyce came to speak to you and answer your questions. Some of the Y6 children also answered your questions and shared their experience, then you had two transition mornings in your new classroom with your Year 6 teacher.

Because this cant happen, we need your help!

Mr Conway and Mrs Ashton have asked you to produce a Year 6 Survival Guide for Year 5.

They will be able to read these in September and hopefully it will answer some of their questions and ease some of their worries!

Think back to before you started Year 6 and use these feelings to complete this table:

What were you looking forward to?

What were you nervous about?

What questions did you have?

What would your top tips be for someone starting Y6 at Charlton?

What has made it different to other year groups?

What will help them to demonstrate the school values?

What will help them to be happy, confident and successful Year 6s?

You need to pull all of your ideas together to present them as a guide for the current Y5 pupils. You can produce this as a poster, a leaflet, a piece of informative writing, a hybrid instruction text….it’s totally up to you, but the more information the better!

You need to complete as much of this as you can today, but there will be some time to finish it next week if you need it.

End of the dayBefore you leave the classroom to go home, you must wash your hands. You will need to take your bag, coat, water bottle and lunch box home with you. Please leave your pencil case in school.
