Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools ’Conduct and Courtesy Policy

    • I can always be heard saying PLEASE when asking for something.

    • When given something, I will always say THANK YOU.

    • Likewise when someone says thank you, I will say, YOU’RE WELCOME or MY PLEASURE.

    • To politely interrupt, I will say EXCUSE ME.

    • I can always be heard saying YES SIR, NO SIR or YES MA’AM or NO MA’AM to my parents, instructors, coaches, advisers, priests, sisters, or other persons deserving of our respect.

•Phrases such as GOOD MORNING, BE SAFE, HOW ARE YOU, and HAVE A GREAT DAY are all part of who I am.

    I AM THE RESPECTFUL CRUSADER!

Welcome to the 2020/2021 school year and the unmatched tradition of Fridays at Memorial Field. While we are navigating uncertain times currently and I am the PRIDE that our athletes, coaches, fans, and alumni demonstrate can bring us safely together each week and in support of the Crusaders. I am excited to support our football team under the direction of head coach Chad Moseman and his capable staff. Our volleyball team is looking toward a return to dominance and a spot in Cedar Rapids under 2013

alumni, Lauren Brobst as head coach. Coach Todd Roerig has great numbers and on both the boys and girls cross country teams as they drive to qualify both squads for Fort Dodge. A night at Memorial Field would not be complete without our talented marching band, dance team, and cheerleaders! It is a blessing to work with such talented students and dedicated coaches, directors, and moderators. This season I am hopeful that we can again re-dedicate ourselves to the pillars of the Play Like a Champion initiative. While Bishop Heelan has always been a leader on the game field/court I am hoping we can extend that to the sidelines and stands! Thank you to all of our fans for dedicating your time and attention to constantly improve sportsmanship throughout our community. Please join me in praying a blessing for the health and safety over all of our students and activities participants this season as we continue to build upon the PRIDE that distinguishes all Knights of Old. Together We Are Heelan!!

Christian A. BorkChristian A. Bork Principal, Bishop Heelan Catholic High School

    God bless,

John FlaneryDr. John FlaneryPresident of Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools

WE ARE HEELAN!Welcome to a new era in Bishop Heelan High School football! We enthusiastically embrace 1990 Bishop Heelan alum Chad Moseman to the head coach position. Coach Moseman, his staff and these student athletes will surely bring us many opportunities to cheer, be proud and celebrate this season.

All of our student-athletes work hard every day to be successful in the classroom as well as in competition. We are proud of their efforts and victoires in many aspects of life. Our BHCS community embodies everyday “A Lifetime Advantage” in their academic pursuits, their Catholic faith formation, service to others and their commitment to excellence.

As you enjoy the 2020 football team, be reminded of the 70-year legacy our Crusaders before have left on this very field. The state championships, playoff appearances, thrilling victories and stalwart dedication to God, family, Heelan and football. We honor all Crusaders throughout our history and we look forward to our future cheering on our student-athletes for generations to come. You are a part of something unique and special at Heelan. 2020-2021 BHCHS OUTLOOKCROSS COUNTRYBOYS - A fairly young team, with only 2 seniors (Noah Winkel and Josh Newman), but they do return 5 boys that have varsity experience from last year. A good sized junior group, along with a large sophomore class of runners, has the boys future looking promising. They might struggle to score points early this season, but as they gain experience they should be able to hold their own against most of the metro and conference teams by the end of the year. GIRLS - The girls team lost two long-term varsity starters in Amber Aesoph and Brenna Joyce. Amber will be hard to replace, but the girls have plenty of experience coming back, along with a strong incoming group of 9th graders. Although they only have two returning senior starters (Grace Mahaney and Emma Hutchinson), the girls will be looking to return to State again this fall. With a fairly deep squad, it will be imperative for the girls to score points with a pack mentality, as the top 5 could vary from meet to meet. All in all, even with the later than normal start to summer running, there is potential for some runners to have a breakout year, as most of them had a great first month of workouts. There is plenty of room for improvement over the next few months, but this should be a fun and exciting year for one of Heelan Cross Country’s largest teams of the past few years.

WRESTLINGThe Bishop Heelan Wrestling Program is coming off a season where they had three wrestlers miss the podium at Wells Fargo Arena, by just one match, however, Co-Head Coaches Jordan Langley, and Matt Pugh are very optimistic about the upcoming season. While the Heelan matmen will miss the leadership of senior team captains and state qualifiers Nick McGowan and Colby Wilmesherr, as well as former state place winner Kolby Clayborne, and District Qualifier, Mitchel Olson who were all lost to graduation. The Crusaders are expected to bounce back and be led by senior and 2x state qualifier, Mitchell Joines. Joines is coming off a season where he captured his 100th varsity win and was consistently ranked in the top 10 in his weight class despite battling injuries that ultimately prevented him from competing in the post-season. In addition to Joines, Langley and Pugh will look to additional leadership and big wins from a stable of young, previous state qualifiers including sophomores, Jahluv Buckhanan and Ethan DeLeon, as well as Junior, Jake McGowan. All three have qualified for the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and will make runs at making the podium this February. While the number of incoming freshmen on the wrestling team may be down, the impact that a few individuals will have on the 2020-2021 season will be significant. The Crusader coaching staff expects

freshmen, Sir Brandon Watts and James Cleary to be two grapplers who have an immediate impact on the Bishop Heelan wrestling program. Other key wrestlers returning from last year’s team include Carter Aldrich, Colin Hubbell, Bryce Harpenau, Liam Cleary and Rayden Neal. The Crusader wrestling team will kick off their ‘20-’21 season on December 3rd with two conference duals against Le Mars and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

GOLFThe 2020 Bishop Heelan boys golf team will be returning five golfers with varsity experience. We will be leaning on that varsity experience and mixing in a couple of young golfers all season to battle for another MRAC title & City title. With district play being held at Whispering Creek, we’re hoping to be playing our best golf in late September for a chance to get an individual or team to the state golf meet.

GIRLS TRACKWe are looking to build on our team numbers from 2 years ago to add depth in all events to hopefully win more meets. We want to get as many events to the state meet and try to score points to finish in the top 10. I was excited with the amount of new members out last year so I’m hoping to build on that this coming season.

GIRLS TENNISBishop Heelan girl’s tennis focuses on learning the fundamental skills of tennis, along with basic singles and doubles strategy. Practices include drills, live play, and fun games! This year the team hopes to continue and improve their tennis skills and knowledge of the game, as well as stay competitive in the conference rankings.

DANCEDuring this strange time we still intend to make a splash at Heelan! We will be competing at state with three routines, jazz, pom, and hip hop. With 23 girls we have a wide range of talent and skills which is most exciting for me this year! We’ve already done some fundraising for our team and are looking forward to performing at every home game that we can. Other than State, we plan to compete in the Dakota Valley dance completion as well. Very busy year for us but these girls are more than capable due to their dedication and love for dance. Go Heelan!

CHEER TEAMThis year, our cheer team is made up of 12 Varsity and 9 Junior Varsity cheerleaders. We are excited to cheer the football and basketball teams on to many victories! Our team is made up of enthusiastic and spirited girls who look forward to the chance to cheer on their team each week. This summer, we held a mask fundraiser that raised money for us to buy new cheer uniforms. We are excited to debut them soon! Go Crusaders!

2020-2021 BHCHS OUTLOOKFOOTBALLThe football team is under the guidance of alum Chad Moseman for the first time this fall. Coach Moseman was previously the head coach at Lawton Bronson. Coach Moseman’s enthusiasm and physical style of playing football will remind the Heelan faithful of teams from the past. The team graduated a large number of letter winners from last season’s team. They are looking to have a bounce back season with an injection of youth and returning players playing more prominent roles.

VOLLEYBALLThe Volleyball program is under the leadership of alum, Lauren Brobst for the second year. This year the Heelan Volleyball program has put a lot of emphasis on True Mental Toughness, which can be defined by Joshua Medcalf and Jamie Gilbert as: having a great attitude, giving your very very best, treating others really well, and finally being unconditionally grateful regardless of your circumstances. The girls have done an excellent job of working hard to obtain true mental toughness, as well as making huge strides on the court. The volleyball team kicked off the season down in Bellevue where they played some of the best teams in Nebraska and Iowa. The girls also had the opportunity to play Omaha Skutt, a team ranked number one in the nation. As a staff, we are very proud of their accomplishments so far this season, and we look forward to watching them get better mentally and physically everyday!

BOYS BASKETBALLWith just one senior returning for the 20-21 basketball season, the Crusaders will be relying a lot on young players to carry a heavy load. They have been spending a lot of time this summer doing what they can to improve their skills and strength. The Crusaders are hoping to compete and learn throughout the season with high hopes for the future.

GIRLS BASKETBALLThe 2020 Class 3A state champions graduated 5 senior starters from last year’s team, but a wealth of young talent returns. While continuing to play a challenging schedule, this team should mature and play its best basketball towards the end of the season and be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.

SPRING SPORTSAlthough the spring sports season was cancelled due to COVID-19 our coaches and athletes continued to work extremely hard throughout the school year. The coaches held team meetings and conducted skill sessions virtually. Their dedication through so much uncertainty and disappointment, should pave the way for a great return to action for our spring Crusader athletes and coaches.

BASEBALLThe 2020 season began with great optimism as the Crusaders returned 9 seniors and garnered a pre-season #1 ranking by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Unfortunately the season will be remembered as a summer of lost opportunities. Head Coach Andy Osborne had the team poised for yet another deep playoff run until 6 of the 9 starters, and two more crucial reserves were sidelined due to COVID-19 at the conclusion of the season. Following an upset of fourth ranked Sioux City East by a Crusader lineup comprised mainly of junior varsity players, the season came to a premature end with a 2-0 loss to Storm Lake in the playoffs. Seniors Jared Sitzmann and Brant Hogue were once again honored with 1st Team All Conference, 1st Team All District, and 1st Team All State honors. Max Venne was also named 2nd Team All State by posting a .480 batting average, which ranked 9th in school single season history. Sitzmann tallied a .508 batting average, 2nd best in school history and leaves Bishop Heelan with a career batting average of .457, a new school record. Brant Hogue was named MRAC Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. His 155 career strikeouts rank him 8th in school history. Perhaps the highlight of the summer came on the night of June 25th when former Crusader Don Wengert returned to Bishop Mueller Field to become the first player in school history to have his playing number retired. Wengert pitched six seasons in the Major Leagues after a standout career at both Bishop Heelan and Iowa State University. His #16 was retired and will never be worn again by a Bishop Heelan baseball player. The 2021 Crusader team features the next wave of talented and exciting Crusaders led by two year starter Junior Ian Gill. He and Senior Brayden Pratt are the only returning starters but several new faces earned valuable playing time this past summer. Names like Brett Sitzmann, Kaleb Gengler, Jackson Freebern, and Sean Schaefer will be household names at this time next year. While the 2020 edition did not return to Principal Park and the state tournament for the 5th consecutive season as expected, everyone involved with the program anticipate a return to Des Moines in 2021.

SOFTBALLIn a tough COVID-19 shortened season, coach Zach Nelson was able to turn the Bishop Heelan softball team into a formidable foe that was playing its best ball at the end of the summer. Coach Nelson’s team finished third in the competitive Missouri River Activities Conference while defeating two teams who had been unbeaten deep into the season while finishing 8-2 down the home stretch.

The Crusaders placed 3 underclassmen and one senior on the all conference team. Coach Zach Nelson and his staff’s tireless efforts provided this young team the opportunity to continue to improve and they did just that.

    BAND

Scan the barcode for information on the band’s Crowdrise page for fundraising!

The 2020 Bishop Heelan Marching Crusaders are proud to present their halftime show, ‘ Decomposers.’ The show is a dark twist on the music of Mozart and Beethoven in which the band has been turned into a horde of zombies. This year’s marching show will not only entertain you, it will also terrify you! This ensemble has been working since July to learn and perfect their marching show. The band will be presenting their show at Memorial Field for all five home football games. The group is under the leadership of Drum Major Faith Do and is directed by Dylan Root, Cameron Sherlock, and Hannah Stock.

The band would like to invite you to our other performances throughout the school year. The concert band will be performing their Christmas Concert on December 13th. The Jazz Band festival season begins in January while the Pep Band can be seen performing at basketball games in the winter months. The Marching Crusaders would like to thank its terrific band parents for the support of the students and music program. The band would also like to thank the Heelan administration and community for their commitment to excellence in all areas of the school system.

VOCAL MUSICThe Bishop Heelan Vocal Music Department is looking forward to an exciting year led by the dynamic duo of Ms. Rachael Wragge and Mr. Gage Fenton. Ms. Wragge will be conducting Freshmen Women’s Chorus and Chorale. Mr. Fenton will be conducting Mixed Chorus and Bel Canto, as well as teaching the 7th and 8th grade music classes at Holy Cross. Ms. Wragge and Mr. Fenton will co-direct Harmonia Mundi while each also having another show choir - Ms. Wragge will have Magnifique while Mr. Fenton will continue his work with Genesis.

Our All-State singers began their audition prepara-tion in early August and will work hard until their final audition which will take place online this year. We are also looking forward to working with a large number of the Heelan student body in one or more of our four curricular concert choirs. The choirs continue to maintain high standards while involving students of all ability levels. Each of the choirs will have an opportunity to travel this year and share the wonderful talents and news of Bishop Heelan. We are once again planning on taking all four choirs to the State 3A Large Group Contest in hopes of achieving superior (one) ratings. Concerts this year may look a little different. Dates, locations, and delivery are yet to be determined based on the best guidelines from the National Federation of High

School Associations. We welcome any and all music lovers to join us throughout the year for some truly excellent choral music. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to come to a concert, you may be pleasantly surprised. You will find these events l isted in the Heelan Activities Calendar and the Bishop Heelan website.

The three Bishop Heelan show choirs will also begin rehearsing this fall as they prepare for their spring competition season. It is the 36th year of show choir here at Bishop Heelan and our groups - Harmonia Mundi, Magnifique, and Genesis - are looking forward to another year of success. We’re not sure if we’ll be able to host our show choir invitational the way it’s been held in the past, but we will continue to hold the date, February 23rd, for what will hopefully be another exciting Crusader Classic.

We are excited to work with students of all levels in our concert choirs. We truly believe that everyone has the ability to sing and therefore has a place within our program! For information on joining our vocal music department, please contact Rachael Wragge or Gage Fenton at (712) 252-0573 or email them at [email protected] or [email protected].

RISE ABOVEAre All Heelan Crusaders Champions?

No. But they’re all winners. Some 65 percent of our Heelan students participate in 40 dierent boys and girls activities. They learn discipline, hard work, team spirit, and life lessons. They know both victory and defeat. They also serve the community, pray in school, and continue on to college. They know that parents, teachers, alumni, and friends cheer for them in and outside the classroom. The impact of that support helps power our students through life. Visit www.bishopheelan.org.

Heelan Debate has been pretty busy prepping for work nights, tournaments, and in-class debating. Every Tuesday we have work nights, which are equivalent to an athletic practice. These are from 6-9pm, and it allows students who are involved in other activities to make it to work nights. We have tournaments coming up in October, and we are hoping they are face-to-face, but some have transitioned to an online setting. We are excited to be back at it after the extended break, and we are on track to be successful and passionate debaters this year.

On October 24, Bishop Heelan theatre students will showcase their acting and musical talents as part of a Variety Show that will be live streamed via the Bishop Heelan Theatre Facebook page. Be sure to tune in at 7pm!
