At the beginning of time, when the sky had not yet been appointed, when theEarth did not have a name yet. When Abzu didn’t have created Heaven and Earthyet. When Chaos – Tiamat – was the mother of both, their sweet salty waters werestill mixed. There were no fields, no swamps, there were no gods, no one wore aname and there were no destinations appointed. Then the gods were created in themiddle of the sky.

Lahmu and Lahumu, centuries of timeless time passed, because time had not beencreated yet. It took an eternity before Anshar and Kisar were born; timeless timepassed and the limits of the heavens and the Earth begat their children; Anu andAnshar and Anu and Nudimmud Anat,: abundant wisdom, extremely strong andwithout rivals. In this way the great gods were created.

I invite you to come with me on my journey to the origin and meaning ofthe Hieros Gamos. You inevitably will discover the magical meaning andapplication of the sacred marriage.

I guide you on a walk through this magical world: step in the ancient storyof Elish Enumah and walk with me. I guide you through the origins, alongthe reasons towards the modern applications of the Hieros Gamos.

The story is the earliest known version of Genesis Enumah Elish. TheSumerian text was found in the library of Ashurbanipal in Nineveh. Thestory is described on seven clay tablets that tell you about the creation ofthe world by the god Marduk.

The separation of Heaven and Earth

Within the Hermetic Order of the Temple of Starlight we work with the'Sacred marriage ', also known as the ' Unification of the Two Lands ': theHeavens and the Earth. The Hieros Gamos is a magical principle that is thecore of each magical work. In this within the Temple of Starlight way weuse ancient texts to make a connection between the spiritual and magicalreality, that you can use even today to create changes in your everyday life.

The first thing that strikes me from the magical perspective, is that theseven clay tablets of creation explain how to separate the ' waters ', in otherwords: How you get control of the world of your subconscious, in order toget grip on your destiny.

You can work with old myths to change your life, with the magicaltechniques which are hidden in those texts. Old myths have differentmeaning layers: the world of metaphors and symbols not only gives ahistorical description of human development, but also gives techniquesthat magically, psychological and physical can change your reality.

When I look from the magical perspective to the text and the seven tablets ofEnumah Elish, than it strikes me that the text is structured according to anancient geometric pattern; the pattern of the Seed of Life, and the Flower ofLife. The key to that veiled knowledge is hidden in the name of Tiamat. Youcan also call her Dia-Meter: divine mother, we know her name continues as ademi-circle.

The victory over the sea serpent

Enumah Elish tells us that Tiamat originally was a sea-serpent that was madeout of pure chaos. A world where everything was undivided and where a wholearmy of chaotic forces was led by the Army Chief called Kingu. This world wasgoverned by huge monsters with sharp teeth and poisoned tentacles.

Do you recognize this reality in the lives of many people? Are you someonewho feels constantly attacked by the raw forces of life? Do you have a grip onwhat happens to you? How you get a grip on this chaos?





The House of the Universe

Marduk went into a battle with Tiamat. He took weapons and a net whichcontained the four winds of heaven. He succeeded in forcing the seaserpent to surrender. He split Tiamat’s body into two parts. One half heused to create the roof of Heaven. He put his staff between the two halveslike a tent pole. Thus Marduk separated the ' Waters of Heaven ' from the 'Waters of the Earth '. In between those waters, dry land emerged. ThereMarduk build a house, E-sara: the House of the Universe.

As a magician I think this is an important part of the myth. Here you cansee how Marduk organized chaos. We now have a roof, dry land, and fourcardinal directions with a house in the middle: the seven basic aspects oflife are sown like seeds. The tent pole connects the roof with the land. Iconsider this pole as the oldest version of the Kabbalistic tree of life.

At the point where his staff reached the roof of the ‘tent of heaven’ Mardukbuilds Nibiru, the Polestar. This star kept all stars in their right course.Then Marduk divided the circle into 360 degrees. He discovered the cycleof the year found out that he could define all the constellations. He createdthe Sun and the Moon came from the eyes of Tiamat, and her tears causedtwo rivers to flow down from the Heavens to water the Earth: theEuphrates and the Tigris, In between, the brilliant planet Venus radiated,she was called Inannah. When this beautiful garden was ready, Mardukcreated humanity, Tammuz.

Magically seen, the myth tell here that it is important to distinguish: whatpsychic powers belong to heaven, and which ones belong to the Earth?How do the great gods behave themselves? Shamash the Sun, Nanna theMoon, Venus Innanah and the other lights of the Heaven. In this way youget an overview about the great cycles of nature and you creates a placewhere you can work at yourself as human being.

The creation of humanity

Marduk has created a magical circle with mighty guards: the Gods ofHeaven. They have beautiful bodies, they steer their planetary boatsthrough the Cosmic Ocean. When the circle was ready, Marduk createdhumanity from his own blood, with earthy mud.



'I will take my blood and I will make bones. I create people who will inhabit theEarth, so that the service to the gods is founded and their shrines are built '.

Magically seen: this is the time when the creation of the spiritual humanbeing takes place. Humanity is not only made from earthly mud, but inhis veins flows the blood of gods. This is why humanity is the child of thegods. He unites the Heaven and the Earth within himself. Now all theconditions are ready for humanity to start the big quest. Do you workwith the gods? Are you ready for the challenge to develop yourself intogod yourself?

The mirror of the gods

Walk further with me on the magical path through the myth. Do you see,how Marduk by separating the waters has also created a mirror? Now hecan see whether he acts according to the divine will. Because the cosmicwaters reflect the earthly waters and visa versa: as above so below, asabove so below. Not only do you see a method to organize the world, butrealise that an archetypal pattern is laid out for you. It comes from thetimes that our consciousness mind worked differently. Logical thinkinghad not developed yet. The subconscious mind governs the world andthis is the world of the gods. When you copy their behavior, you behave inline with the cosmic harmony. Then you start to grow spiritually, andyou get a grip on your life.

The hanging gardens

In the Hermetic Order of the Temple of Starlight we consider the 'Heavenly Waters ' as a ' Cosmic Ocean’ of consciousness. In these watersthe gods sail as large psychic forces of consciousness. The gods aretranscendent and immanent simultaneously. They are all penetratingground patterns of consciousness. The constellations and planets aregods in the world of myth. And like Gods should live, they have inbeautiful gardens in which magical palaces are build. The road that theplanets take around the Earth are ' hanging gardens '. We now are able towalk through seven worlds of consciousness, and each of these worlds hasits own laws.



Every God now has their own place and their field of influence is filledwith psychological content. Jung called the gods ' Archetypes ', in order totranslate the concept of these archaic forces for a rational world. Magicseen the Gods are organs of consciousness in the Matrix of the psyche ofthe Universe.

Within the Hermetic Order of the Temple of Starlight we consider Godsto be both transcendent and immanent. Their operation is layered. EveryGod and goddess has their own attributes; stones, herbs, animals,weapons, human characteristics and a place among the stars. Theseseries of associations are still used to be able to observe their behavior indaily life and in nature.

The Tower of Babel

In antiquity the entire myth was carefully re-created on Earth. In order tounderstand the will of the gods, one needs to observe them properly. Theart of studying the omens developed: study what happens insynchronicity in the Heaven and on the Earth, and watch the outcome.

With our magical tour we have now arrived in the midst of the garden.Here starts a celestial staircase, Marduk built a way to climb towardsheaven. On Earth so called Ziggurats were built. They were carefullyconstructed to resemble the observations that were made in the sky. Thebuilding was constructed in seven layers. Seven floors were made andeach floor was connected with a planet, a hanging Garden, and with apair of gods: we have arrived at the famous Tower of Babel.

'I have completed the oldest monument of Babylon in its greatness, made withsilver, gold, other metals, stones, glazed tiles, spruce and pine wood: the Houseof the bridge between heaven and Earth. This building is the home of the sevenLights of the Earth. ' King Nabuchadnezzar, 605 BC.

Climb this magical Ziggurat with me. It is a celestial staircase. When youclimb upwards, you also make a psychological journey along all elementalforces. Just like Marduk you meet the four winds of the four cardinaldirections on the road: the Northern wind, Southern wind, the WesternWind and the Eastern wind: you are exposed to the elements earth, fire,water and air. These are metaphors for the material world, the world ofthe instincts, the world of the feelings and the world of thoughts.



With each round you raise your consciousness to a higher heavenlyatmosphere. From the sky two rivers of divine grace flow down and wateryour garden and your country, to give you life. This is the gift of the godswho continue to drain your garden with spiritual water.

After this climb party we are now arrived on the roof of the temple. Hereare seven chapels built. The seventh Chapel is the main, herein lies the 'House of the Bed and the throne ', the bedroom of the goddess Inannah.Formerly lived here the high priests who had her life dedicated to the GodMarduk, we have arrived at the place where the sacred marriage wassolemnized.

The Akitu Festival

In ancient Mesopotamia the new year was announced by an extensiveperformance of Enumah Elish. The King represented the earthly human,Tammuz. He had to prove his fertility during the Akitu festival, in a twelve-day ritual.

The Akitu Festival begins with the story of Elish Enumah and an extensivepurification and the invocation of Marduk and his wife Sarpanitu.Everything was cleaned with the Holy waters of the Euphrates and theTigris. The King dressed in Royal regalia, and declared that he wasinnocent to sins. He got a strong slap in the face of the high priest (so hardthat he got tears in his eyes), to convince Marduk that he had to help thecountry and destroy the enemies.

Then Holy boats arrived. They were all blessed and symbolic fights wereheld to ensure that Marduk could leave his prison as vegetation god in theunderworld. The goddess Inanna found Marduk in the underworldmountain and helped him to escape from it. Then the plants would start togrow again.

When you want to climb the magical Ziggurat, the purification ceremony isthe start of your spiritual development. It is a necessary confrontation thattakes place continuously during your spiritual development. Look intoyour underworld. Do you dare you to walk with me and practice that self-reflection? Look into the mirror of the self. But you get help, the goddess oflove Inannah comes help you.



When you are reborn from the underworld you are the son of Marduk,Tammuz, created from Marduk himself. Your country – your life – isfertile. The gods themselves help you prepare yourself against the hostileforces of the coming year.

In ancient times the King then went along with the gods in procession tothe outer edge of the city, as a delirious army that had overcome Tiamat.Then the gods went into the Festival House, where the King met Inannah.A high Priestess in the role of Inannah guided the King, and togetherclimbed the Ziggurat to celebrate the sacred Marriage. The Goddess ofHeaven united with the King of the country. This was insurance for therenewal of nature and the welfare of the country.

On the last day of the Akitu Festival there was again a meeting and then acelebration took place of the victory of the god Marduk over Tiamat's Armyby killing Kingu. From this blood the people were created. The King hadmanaged to successfully combat the forces of the opposition. The forces ofchaos were tamed, and from that effort the people developed.

Seen from the Magical Temple, the Hieros Gamos is a mystical unification.You frees yourself from the underworld, and become the victor from thebattle with the chaotic forces. You will be led by Innanah and climb themagical Ziggurat. Arriving at the chapel of the Bed and the Throne you arethe Earth uniting with Heaven. There is no more distinction betweenbelow and above. They reflect each other perfectly. In every earthly event,in every living being you can see divine and you are like the gods becauseyou have developed yourself to into their mirror image . It is thedescription mystical enlightenment.

Separating the waters

We consider the ' waters ' as the worlds of our psyche. ' Separating thewaters ' is the beginning of the spiritual path. Within the temple weconsider these mythological realities as "magic highways of the mind '.Here the Hieros Gamos is an important magical concept that you findeverywhere in Western Mysticism as attitude, an exercise, a meditation, aprayer and a ritual method.



It is a spiritual method that leads to peak experiences, self-realizations,that helps you transform your own life in divine garden. Enumah Elish isan example of an important creation mythology, which connects us to thespiritual path and helps us in our personal development.
