But before the likes of world No. 1 Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr and the LPGA Tours impressive collection of Korean stars gather at Vancou-ver Golf Club in Coquitlam for the CN Canadian Womens Open in late August, theres lots of other tournament golf on the B.C. calendar. After a four-year absence, the B.C. Amateur Championship re-turns to the Lower Mainland. Since North Vancouvers Eugene Wong won the title at Marine Drive in 2008, B.C.s most pres-tigious amateur championship has toured the province, mak-ing stops in Duncan, Castlegar and Kamloops, where last year David Rose of West Vancouver won by three shots at Te Dunes.Tis year, the B.C. Amateur will be held July 24-27 at Swan-e-set Bay in Pitt Meadows, where Swan-e-sets 7,000-yard Resort course fgures to present a stif test.Te B.C. Womens Amateur, won by one shot last year by Port Albernis Christina Proteau, goes July 3-6 this year at Christina Lake Golf Club. Te B.C. Senior Mens Championship fgures to get some extra attention this year when it is held July 16-18 at Nanaimo Golf Club. Tats because 13-time B.C. Amateur champion Doug Roxburgh is expected to make his senior debut. Roxburgh, who recently retired from his job with Golf Canada, has given his fel-low seniors a fve-year head start. Roxburgh fgures to have his hands full trying to defeat Gud-mund Lindbjerg, the Pitt Meadows Golf Club member who has won the last four B.C. Senior Mens Championships. Nanaimo Golf Club member Sandy Harper, who last fall won his second consecutive Pacifc Northwest Mens Mid-Amateur Champion-ship, also fgures to be in the hunt on his home course.Te Canadian Womens Tour makes its annual visit to B.C. May 15-16 at Richmond Country Club. Jessica Shepley of Ontario has won the last two Canadian Womens Tour events in B.C., held last year at Squamish Valley and in 2010 at Quilchena in Richmond.Te winner of this years event at Richmond will receive an ex-emption into the CN Canadian Womens Open.Tis years RBC Canadian Open event will be back at the three City of Vancouver courses -- Fraserview, Langara and McCleery -- and goes Aug. 31-Sept. 2.Te Canadian Tour will be making just one stop in B.C. this summer. Te $200,000 Times-Colonist Island Savings Open goes June 7-10 at Uplands Golf Club. Te Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship goes Sept. 4-7 at Point Grey Golf & Country [email protected]/twitter.com/bradziemerGOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 4 4/18/12 9:36:18 AMDUECKwww.dueckgm.com400 S.E. Tat maximum score is based on what your handicap is.Under the former system, a golfer with a handicap in the mid-teens would not count any score higher than a double-bogey for handicap purposes. Under the new rules, which took efect March 1, for anyone between a 10 and 19 handicap the maxi-mum score on any hole regardless of the par is now seven. What that means is those players now must count triple-bogeys Mark down 2012 as the year of the rising handicapPLEASE DO NOT; distort the logo screen back the logos use the logo on distracting backgrounds, patterns, images.COLOUR VERSIONSPOT:Pantone 3015 CCMYK:100/30/0/20RGB:0/114/171HEX #:0072AB For all positive colour applicationsonly Use on white backgrounds Crop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.LEGIBILITY; WHITE SPACE; Ensure there is at least one Bar Heightbetween the logo and other graphic elements. Teres other people who are 11 handicaps who might make 11 pars, four double-bogeys and three triple-bogeys. Tat person will be more afected. I like to refer to it as the Steady Eddie golfer who is probably not going to notice much of a change, while the Wild Bill golfer probably will.High-handicappers are also getting hit.For golfers with handicaps of between 20 and 29, the maximum score on a hole is now eight. It used to be a maximum of three-over par.For those with a handicap of between 30 and 39, the maximum score on any hole is now nine.Under the former system, 19 through 32 handicaps could post nothing higher than a triple-bogey and and 33 and over handicaps could post nothing higher than four-over par on any hole. For the real hackers -- those with a handicap index of 40 or higher -- the new maximum score is now 10. According to Golf Canada the average handicap of a Canadian male golfer is about 16 and 24 for a female.MacKay does not think the changes will be as dramatic as some predict.Your handicap is still going to be caluculated only using your best 10 of your last 20 scores.A lot of your rounds where you have a lot of equitable stroke control adjustments were rounds that were poorly played in which case they are probably not go-ing to be in your top 10 diferential. Once people experience it and we have a year under our belt with this, I think most people will be surprised and that the change is not going to be great as they thought.MacKay says the changes will result in a handicapping system that better refects a players actual game.In efect, the new equitable stroke control is going to mean that a persons handicap is more refective of their actual ability rather than their potential ability, he says.Te changes bring Canada into line with the handicapping sys-tem that has been used for many years by the USGA..A lot of Canadians play down south in the winter time and there was an issue where people were confused about when they played in the U.S. whether they should be using the USGA equitable stroke control system or ours, MacKay says. In gen-eral someone from Canada used to be at a slight disadvantage playing against an American handicap-wise. So that is now not an issue.Tere has been concerns expressed that the changes will slow down the game even further. But MacKay doesnt agree.Under the rules of golf you put the ball on the tee and you play until its holed out. Equitable stroke control is not meant to be okay, you reach your max and you pick up and you go to the next tee. But Ill admit that practically it has become that in a lot of ways, particularly at the club level. But my response to that would be there are far greater issues in golf causing slow play that we need to tackle as an industry before we worry about a few extra strokes from equitable stroke control. I just dont be-lieve it is going to cause any tangible [email protected]; twitter.com/bradziemerIn the U.S. they have been using that system for many years and here is no evi-dence PLEASE DO NOT; distort the logo screen back the logos use the logo on distracting backgrounds, patterns, images.COLOUR VERSIONSPOT:Pantone 3015 CCMYK:100/30/0/20RGB:0/114/171HEX #:0072AB For all positive colour applicationsonly Use on white backgrounds Crop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.LEGIBILITY; WHITE SPACE; Ensure there is at least one Bar Heightbetween the logo and other graphic elements. I was very young, only 18, my frst time in Canada and I really didnt speak any English. But everyone there tried to help me out.Tseng is on the phone from her Florida home when suddenly it dawns on her. She knew the Canadian Womens Open was be-ing held in the Vancouver area this summer, but she clearly was not aware it was coming to the very course where she earned one of her frst professional victories. Is that where the CN Canadian Open is this year? she asks excitedly. Told that was indeed the case, she practically shrieks with joy: Oh, thats great, I didnt know that. Tat will be fun, I have some great memories there. I know how to play the course and I am really looking forward to going back to Vancouver. I have some friends there and lots of Taiwanese people live around Vancouver so I hope lots of people will come out and watch us play. Many of them fgure to come and watch Tseng play. She will be the headliner in a feld that fgures to be packed with all the big names in womens golf.Tseng is coming of a remarkable 2011 season that saw the 23-year-old Taiwanese native win 12 times, capture two major championships and earn her second-straight Player of the Year Award. Her win back in 2007 at Vancouver Golf Club was memorable in part because in addition to the $5,800 frst-place cheque, it gave her an exemption into that years CN Canadian Womens Open in Edmonton.Tseng tied for sixth at that event, her frst LPGA Tour tourna-ment, and went on to earn her full-time playing privileges later than year at qualifying school. She hasnt looked back since.Te Canadian Open has some special meaning to me because that was my frst LPGA tournament, Tseng says. I played well and got very close to winning and the next year I was really close and I had a four-shot lead on Sunday and didnt win. Ev-ery year it seems I get close, so I am excited about this year be-cause I know the course and know I can play well there. I have some good memories about this course so I am really looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can do well and win it this time.Asked what she remembers about Vancouver Golf Club, Tseng laughs and says trees. Its a tree-lined course, you just need to be smart because if you miss a couple of shots its easy to get a high number. I re-member the rough was pretty long and the greens are not really big and some of them have some slope. So its a course where you need to hit it straight and keep it on the fairway and play smart. All of her recent success has done nothing to curb Tsengs ap-petite for winning. She hit the gym hard this past winter, de-termined to improve her physical conditioning, and has also tweaked her swing with the help of coach Gary Gilchrist.I am not tired of winning, she says. Winning is very exciting for all of the players. Hopefully I am going to try and repeat that Continues on page 12COver sTOrY| 2 0 1 2 G O L f G u I D E11PLEASE DO NOT;distort the logoscreen back the logosuse the logo on distracting backgrounds, patterns, images.COLOUR VERSIONSPOT:Pantone 3015 CCMYK:100/30/0/20RGB:0/114/171HEX #:0072ABFor all positive colour applicationsonlyUse on white backgroundsCrop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.LEGIBILITY;WHITE SPACE; Ensure there is at least one Bar Heightbetween the logo and other graphic elements. When placing in a multi-branded environment, ensure its placementis appropriate to its relative importance.B&WVERSIONFor all positive black & white applications onlyUse on white backgroundsCrop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.GENERALREVERSE VERSIONUse only on multi-colouredbackgrounds (photos, solidcolours which are NOT Province blue or a PNG or a Canwestcorporate colour.)Crop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.CORPORATE REVERSE VERSIONFor all reverse black & white applicationsUse if background colour is; Province blue or a PNG or a Canwest corporate colour. For all large format applications(newspaper boxes, tents, etc.)Crop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly. The Province brand is a highly visible asset valued by the newspapers readership and corporate community. Tere are lots of things I need to keep learning and I am working hard with my coach and my trainer. We are doing some things to improve my swing and physical condition. I am just looking forward to seeing how much I can improve this year.Brent Gough, the longtime general manager of Vancouver Golf Club, hadnt heard of Tseng when she won at the Coquitlam course back in 2007.I dont think too many of us had, he says. But it turned out to be the catalyst to an incredible career. I would imagine she has a soft heart for the Vancouver Golf Club. She seemed very appreciative of how the club took care of her and all the gals and she had wonderful time. She really enjoyed the golf course obviously and graciously accepted the trophy and moved on. Tere wasnt a lot of fanfare. She seemed like a very pleasant young woman with some high aspirations to really move forward. I guess that event was a real confdence-booster for her.Like Tseng, Vancouver Golf Club is excited about having the LPGA Tour back at the 102-year-old course. Te club played host to the former du Maurier Classic on two previous occa-sions -- in 1988 when South African Sally Little won and again in 1991 when American Nancy Scranton prevailed.Tis years event is scheduled for Aug. 23-26 and ofers one of the largest purses on tour at $2.25 million. We expect to see a really, really strong feld, Gough says. Te good news is they are coming up from Portland (Oregon) the week before, so that makes it a nice easy trip up. Last year they had to go from Portland to Montreal. And they still were able to have a very strong feld for that tournament. So it can only be as good or better, I would imagine. Te word is the players are excited to come here.Penticton native A.J. Eathorne, a former LPGA Tour regular who caddied for last years winner in Montreal, Brittany Lin-cicome, said the tournament is truly one of the LPGA Tours marquee events. It is always a frst-class event, Eathorne says. CN does a great job and really treats it like a major.Vancouver Golf Club should again be a terrifc venue. Te course has recently re-done its two par 3s on the front nine -- Nos. 3 and No. 7 -- and should be in tip-top shape come late August. Its coming together very, very nicely, Gough says. We are expecting some good crowds and we are going to put on a great show. I think the players are going to be impressed with our club.Teres only one thing that could spoil the show.Hopefully, Gough says, we wont get PNE [email protected]; twitter.com/bradziemerCANADIAN WOMENS OPENWhen: Aug. 23-26Where: Vancouver Golf Club, 771 Austin Ave., CoquitlamPurse: $2.25 million ($337,500 winners share)Notable players expected: Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Ai Miyazato, Lexi Thompson, Na Yeon ChoiTicket information: Visit www.cncanadianwomensopen.com or call 1-866-571-LPGA (5742)GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 GOLFMAG 2012 Tues.indd 13 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM 4/18/12 9:49:01 AM2 0 1 2 G O L f G u I D E |1401088935.ad 1 4/11/12 3:10:06 PM01085472.ad 1 4/13/12 2:57:09 PM15PLEASE DO NOT; distort the logo screen back the logos use the logo on distracting backgrounds, patterns, images.COLOUR VERSIONSPOT:Pantone 3015 CCMYK:100/30/0/20RGB:0/114/171HEX #:0072AB For all positive colour applicationsonly Use on white backgrounds Crop off tag line if it is too small to be read, or too small to printproperly.LEGIBILITY; WHITE SPACE; Ensure there is at least one Bar Heightbetween the logo and other graphic elements.
