2 Al Kader Oasis - September 2020

From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson

As summer turns to fall it’s hard not to think about what could have been a very successful fun Shrine year. Life is full of choices. Some big, some small. Every day we are faced with choices, and once we decide between Options A and B, and sometimes we get no choice at all, either way we head down a new path. What occurs after we make the choice is a direct result of having made THAT decision. In life, we must make the best of the choices we make. We don’t get to see how things would have turned out had we made different decisions. Once our decision is made, we set ourselves down a path, and it’s up to us to make sure the outcome is the best

one possible. All the second-guessing and “what ifs” won’t ever allow us to know what would have happened or what could have been. You choose, and then you make the best of it. Brother George Washington once said “We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience.”

People like to say they have no regrets. I’d like to believe that I’ve lived my life without regret. That doesn’t mean I haven’t made mistakes and poor choices. I’ve made plenty of both. But each choice and every mistake I have made has triggered a series of events that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred. Those events forced more decisions that led down the path that is life. I’m happy with my life, I’m happy with the effort the dedicated Divan has put in during these challenging times and that means I accept the choices we have made, even the poor ones.

So it seems to me that it’s a waste of time to think about what could have been. It’s a waste of time to look back at this Shrine year and speculate about what might have happened because we’ll really never know. Life gave us a strange situation, and then it’s up to us to make the best of that. The energy spent second-guessing ourselves and our Fraternity is better put to use making sure the decision we made works out as well as possible because often, it’s not the choice itself that determines the ultimate outcome but what we do once we’ve made the decision. It’s better to look forward as our lives unfold than to look back. When we look forward, we can anticipate what will happen next—we can see what problems might arise and make additional choices that will help avoid them. Living life by always looking back at our decisions is like trying to drive down the road by looking in the rear view mirror—we’re bound to end up in the ditch. Instead, let’s all look forward through the windshield so we can see our path clearly, and things will likely turn out much better for us in the long run. I can assure you the planning for the future of Al Kader is in full swing. Plans for an amazing 2021 are in the works and we hope and pray to set all of these plans in motion. Please stay tuned in and “Keep the fires burning!” as Noble Smith said to me last month.

Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement and continued support. Stay well and I hope to see you all very soon,

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin

Dear Nobles and Ladies of Al Kader Shrine,

Here we are in the Month of September 2020 and I imagine for most, it is not bringing us to the end of this devastating year quickly enough. The pandemic has taken a toll that is hard to accept and we must each of us, fall back on our respective faith to sustain us until the horrific consequences have been resolved.

In addition to the aforementioned problems, we are still forced to deal with a plethora of problems and heart rendering situations. The Black Camel visits continue as we mourn the loss of yet more Nobles. Bernie Standfill being one more Noble to leave us as we join with his lady Shirley in heartfelt wishes for the G.A.O.T.U. to welcome him to that house not built with hands, eternal in the heavens.

We are also plagued with discontent and dire deeds as we watch the once beautiful city of Portland being turned into a micro war zone of rioting, looting, protesting, and increasing tensions.

The political circus we have been witnessing on all levels of government only adds to the angst brought about by so many other ridiculous issues no matter from which perspective you may view them.

I can only ask each of you to search deeply into your hearts and souls and join me in reflecting upon the tenets of our Masonic teachings combined with the strength of our individual faith to guide us through these perilous times towards a better world blessed with peace.

I remain your devoted Chaplain,

The Al Kader History - Chapter 1 By Noble John Smith, Historian

The “Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” was instituted by Mohammedan Kalif Alee in Mecca, Arabia in 644 A.D. but did not really become a power [in Arabia] until 1698. The members could not dream of the major role their Order would play in the history of the world.

The Order existed until about the 1960s. Its main purposes were to dispense justice and, generally, to be a vigilance committee composed of the most forceful, skilled and respected men in Arabia. It prided itself in being non-political and non-religious.

Its greeting was “Es Salamu Aleikum”, (Peace be with you) which was replied to with (With you be peace), “Aleikum es Salamu”). The jewel of the Order was a crescent formed by the claws of a Royal Bengal tiger.

Tillamook County Shrine Club By Noble Carey J. Huckaba

With renewed energy as we emerged from the doldrums of the covid-19 pandemic, the noblest Nobles and the fairest Ladies of Tillamook County Shrine Club met at noon on Friday, August 7th in the unique Beach Bite Restaurant in beautiful downtown Rockaway Beach for a sumptuous lunch and a most productive meeting.

With the Oregon East-West Game cancelled for 2020, the Baker County Cattlewomen’s Association that donates the steer auctioned at halftime of each game as a fundraiser for the Portland Shriners Hospital, have decided to donate a steer to the Baker County Auction and donate the proceeds from this auction to the Shriners Hospital. So, after begging, bugging and arm-twisting, East

-West Game Association Board Members Nobles Jesse Exton and Carey Huckaba, raised $1,200 to bid on the steer, which of course will be donated back to be re-auctioned to raise more funds for our Shriners Hospital.

With the suspension of degree work by the Grand Master, Tillamook County Shrine Club has two candidates who have been awaiting conferral of the Master Mason degree for half a year. If these candidates do not tire of waiting and drop out of Masonry, Tillamook County Shrine Club is offering encouragement to these candidates by anteing up the shrine initiation fee for all 2020 candidates.

Because of the covid-19 pandemic the 2020 Tillamook County Fair is limited to 4-H and FFA activities and a few exhibits and with crowds limited plus space requirements, the decision was reached to cancel the annual steer raffle at the Tillamook County Fair for the first time in half a century. Therefore, we had to drastically revise our shrine club budget.

By the end of this busy meeting, once again came the proclamation: ‘ALL IS WELL IN GOD’S COUNTRY.”

by Dereesa Reid, Administrator of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland

For several months, our entire team has been working hard to recover from the COVID-19 shut down in Oregon that began in March. Our inpatient volume has returned, keeping our inpatient unit and hospital support services busy throughout the week and on weekends.

As our patients and employees return, many things have changed ranging from universal masking to greater space requirements to ensure safe social distancing. Our environmental services team are tirelessly working to keep our facility clean through enhanced cleaning efforts. With new requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE), our supply chain has reached a heightened level of daily inventory tracking and persistent vendor search to acquire essential supplies.

Many departments have found new, creative ways to stay in contact with our patients and community. The new Facebook Live events featuring our

physicians and virtual hospital tour video are just a couple of examples of efforts to continue engagement with our community through adaptations that align with the new norm.

We miss seeing our Board Members, volunteers, sewing ladies, and volunteer drivers, and we look forward to the time when we can once again meet in person.

Nydia Temple #4 By Lady Paula Levin

Greetings Nobles from the Ladies of Nydia Temple #4, Daughters of the Nile:

What a crazy year for all of us. No Imperial session for you. No Supreme session for us and sadly no gatherings where we all come together to support our various activities and socialize with each other. We’ve been trying to do our very best to keep in touch with our members through phone calls, cards and Zoom meetings. These things certainly don’t replace being together in person but thankfully, it does allow us to have face to face contact. I know that sometimes we take our day to day activities for granted and this pandemic has certainly been a wakeup call.

We hope that you and your loved ones are all doing well and before long, we’ll be able to resume our club meetings, stated sessions and social events to support our common goal, Shriners Children’s Centers.

Stay safe, enjoy the remaining days of summer, and please let us know what’s new with the AlKader Shriners . We’d love to hear from you in our next Nydian!

2021 Officer Prospects By Terry Griffith, Chief Rabban

Traditionally, the Nobles that are planning on standing for an office for the ensuing year, makes their announcements in Burns, during the BBQ at Noble Bill Quier’s house. Well, there is NOTHING traditional about this year and so with the cancelling of the BBQ, an alternative is to give you some information for each potential officer. Another tradition has been for these Nobles to do a round robin attendance for several Units in November, which also will probably not occur.

Standing for Potentate 2021

Terry Griffith, your Chief Rabban, and will be standing for your Potentate for 2021. I grew up on a small farm outside Salem and learned the value

Page 7: Golf Tournament Draws a Great Crowd!OASIS Potentate IS Carl Thompson, Publisher Patrick Sheehan, Editor Art Thompson, Photographer Items must be received by the 24th of the month to

Al Kader Oasis - September 2020 7

of hard work and the importance of family.

During his career with the Oregon State Police, he sought out Masonry and was Initiated, Passed and Raised within three months in 2003. He served as Secretary of two separate occasions, totaling over 10 years. He was initiated into the Shrine in Baker City during the 2004 East/West celebration.

After retiring from the State Police, Terry was employed as a trainer for Homeland Security and the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama. He retired from that in 2016.

He is married to Debby, who retired after 42 years as a registered nurse and worked as the charge nurse for the Operating Room of St Charles in Bend. Now they enjoy watching their grandchildren and rv’ing.

Since joining the Shrine, Terry has been very active in the Central Oregon Shrine Club, serving as president twice, as well as organizing the Central Oregon Shriners Run for A Child. This event “ran” for seven years, giving the Shriners Hospital for Children-Portland over $130,000. He has also been a moving force in creating a working business model for Al Kader as well as instigating a facelift for your Center.

Both Terry and Debby know that this is a team effort and are looking forward to serving Al Kader in 2021 and re-opening our Temple.

Standing for Chief Rabban

Mark Phillips is standing for the office of Chief Rabban for the 2021 Shrine year.

Mark lives in Newport with his wife Deanna, and together they are raising their nine-year old granddaughter, Annisa. Their family’s roots on the Oregon Coast date back to Mark’s grandfather, who traveled to Astoria in 1919.

Mark is a twice Past Master of Newport Lodge No. 85, where he is the current sitting Secretary. He is also a member of Tillamook Lodge No. 57 out in “God’s Country” as well as Research Lodge of Oregon No. 198 in Portland. He is serving this year as a District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of Oregon. He is a Past Royal Patron of Oceanside Court, Order of the Amaranth and serves this year as the Grand Warder of the Oregon Grand Court. Mark is both a 32* Scottish Rite Mason with the Valley of Portland and a Knight of St. Andrew. He lectures and publishes on a variety of Masonic topics, sometimes in connection with the Scottish Rite Research Society. In his so-called spare time, he

and his family maintain their restored craftsman-style home located six blocks from the ocean. He and Annisa just installed some new hummingbird feeders.

Mark started out thinking he would be a teacher, so he holds two college degrees in philosophy. He switched gears after a few years in the classroom, opting instead for law school. For the past 30 years, he has worked in law firms except for a stint as claims counsel with AIG Insurance in New York.

Mark started serving in Al Kader’s Divan with the appointed position of Second Ceremonial Master. After that, he joined Al Kader’s Executive Board as Oriental Guide, High Priest & Prophet, and Assistant Rabban. He has been President of the Lincoln County Shrine Club, and belongs to the Oriental Band, Desert Patrol, and Caravaneers. Lady Deanna and Junior Lady Annisa are regular attendees with Mark at Shrine events, whether at Wilsonville or elsewhere.

Standing for Assistant Rabban

Carl Robinson lives in Aloha, Oregon with his wife Darlene. Although his birth certificate says he was born in Gilroy, California, he is not a California transplant. It’s just one of those things. His father was working for the Coast and Geodetic Survey, and his parents just happened to be in California for a month when he was born. Carl was one of the kids to actually ride a horse through all kinds of weather to a two room school house outside of Enterprise, Oregon.

Carl was Master of his Blue Lodge twice, once at Mt. Tabor Lodge 42 and also Master of Southgate Lodge 12, which is now Cornerstone Lodge 157. During this time he served on the Southgate Board of Trustees, was a District Deputy for two years, and chaired his Lodges’ Scholarship Programs. He organized and implemented the Child ID Program for his Lodge, and trained and implemented the Oregon Grand Lodge Torchlight and Fellow of the Craft programs in both Southgate 12 and Cornerstone 157 Lodges. In 2005 he designed and constructed the Grand Lodge of Oregon mobile sound system, and has been operating the sound for them ever since. In 2008 he received the Hiram Award.

Carl attended Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon, during which time he was a radio operator in the Civil Air Patrol Search and Rescue,

where his lifelong love of communication was born. After graduation, Carl decided to join the Navy and see the world. (In his case the Navy recruiters were right!) Carl became a Radioman working at communication stations in the Philippines and Okinawa, primarily dealing with combat and transport ships off Vietnam.

Carl joined Al Kader Shrine in 2014, and in 2017 became Captain of Motor Escort for two years. In 2018 he was appointed as Second Ceremonial Master, was Coordinator for the 64th Annual Food Caravan, as well as joining the Legion of Honor. In 2019 Carl attended Oriental Guide training and a separate training for Membership, both in Tampa, Florida. During that year he also coordinated the Shrine Easter Egg Hunt with Wilsonville Parks. He has served as High Priest and Prophet during 2020.

In 1973, Carl attended Oregon State University studying Oceanography, but dropped out during his junior year when Darlene received her Master’s Degree. He started working at a motorcycle shop in the days before the watercraft and snowmobiles became popular, which meant that the shop cut back on personnel every fall. The layoff was a good thing, as it catapulted him into a career of working on British cars and Volvos that continued for 24 years. He is now retired, and his hobbies are scuba diving, sky diving, and spelunking. He is in both Motor Escort and the Widows Sons. As he often says, “Motorcycles are not really a hobby as much as what I do.”

Standing for High Priest and Prophet

Martin Klos is a physician raised in Southern Oregon and elsewhere around the world with an Air Force father. His training at OHSU as a medical student included a rotation in the Old Shriners hospital on 82nd in the Quonset huts. This was his first exposure to our heroic kids.

Trained as an Anesthesiologist, he spent 14 years in an Air Force uniform on active duty and the reserves and National Guard. He was a flight surgeon for an F-16 squadron in Fargo North Dakota for 3 years, and the state air surgeon for the state of North Dakota.

His Masonic career began when he passed his EA ritual on April 5 1990 to his MM ritual on April 16 in 1990. (Yes, the dates are correct and it was a very, very intense 11 days). He was raised to Master Mason in Fargo North Dakota with the goal of becoming a Shriner.

After several more moves he arrived in the

Eugene Area and became a life member of Eugene #11 and Creswell #112 where he is currently the Senior Warden. He became a Shriner in the spring ceremonial at Al Kader in 2014, around the same time he finished his MBA in Healthcare Management. He applied for a position on the hospital board in 2017, and began serving on the board in January 2018. He is currently the Chair of the Medical Committee, reporting on the credentialing and quality assurance for the hospital. He currently also serves as a member of the Hospital Strategy Committee.

He is a past member of the Motorcycle escort, not being able to ride the bike he donated the motorcycle he brought to the group. He was the key person in resuscitating the Emerald Patrol parade club in the Eugene Springfield area and has organized entries in the local parades in the South Willamette area for 3 parades this year and is working on 5 for next year. The group is working to build a mixed parade group with drift trikes, a clown truck, and small cars. They will serve the southern Willamette valley, with future plans to work with Hillah on their parades as well.

Standing for Recorder 2021

Illustrious Sir Todd is a native Oregonian, born and raised in Milwaukie.

After observing the fellowship his Father found in Masonry, Todd petitioned Milwaukie Lodge in 1985 and was raised a Master Mason December 3rd that year.

He progressed up the line from Senior Steward; served as Worshipful Master in 1992, was editor of the Trestleboard for several years and served on the Temple Management Board.

Todd joined the Scottish Rite in 1986 and walked the Hot Sands to become a Noble of Al Kader Shrine in June later that year. In 1988 he became a charter member of the Desert Patrol and served as Captain in 1994.

In 2014 Todd was appointed to the Al Kader Divan and has had significant involvement with the Food Caravan, Children’s Christmas Party, Easter Egg Hunt, Mt Angel Oktoberfest, Divan Training and has had a fun and successful year as our 2019 Potentate, including hosting PNSA and two Imperial Potentate visitations.

He has attended several hospital board meetings to improve communication with the hospital and learn how best we can work together.

Todd enjoys bringing his 40 years of small business experience to the table, working with the Divan to plan Al Kader Shrine’s success over the next 100 years.

Standing for Treasurer

Gillan has been serving as Treasurer for Al Kader Temple. He will be standing for this position for 2021.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak

In spite of the coronavirus, 68 golfers had a wonderful time on a great day for the 75th Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament at the Oregon City Golf Course. The low gross Shrine team with an amazing 53 was headed up by our Potentate IS Carl Thompson. All the players received a 75th Anniversary Golf Pouch. Buster’s BBQ provided the food which was served by Terry and Debbie Griffith and Mel and Velna De Hut. This was the first event for Al Kader with the public since March. It was successful and everyone had a great time. Everyone observed the rules. The complete results are elsewhere in the Oasis.

The next meeting of the Greeters is scheduled for September 15, 2020 at 6 PM at the Shrine Center. The final results from the golf tournament should be available for review. All members are urged to attend to critique this years tournament. If you are interested in joining this elite club please come. New members are always welcome.

At this time there is not much happening at the Shrine Center. Stay safe.

Concert Band By Noble Jeff Zimmerman

Have you ever been excited about placing a phone call, maybe to make contact with an old friend you haven’t spoken to for a long time, or maybe to a travel agent to finally make arrangements for a dream vacation you and your family have been planning for and talking about and looking forward to for months; then the excitement is dampened a bit when the person that answered the phone says, “Can you hold, please?”, then places you on hold before you can respond? Soon it feels like they have forgotten about you, hanging on the phone hoping someone will pick-up and talk to you. Time ticks by veerry slowwwly.

That’s what this summer has been like, in March we were so excited with the dawning of Spring just around the corner, with all the good weather and long days that the soon-to-arrive summer promises. Then BAM, we are put on HOLD by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here it is September and we are still on HOLD, and in our heads we hear that canned music that sounds like a radio that is almost but not quite tuned to the station; and the same four songs just keep repeating, and every once in a while a recorded voice breaks in and asks you to continue to hold because your call is very important, as if to say “it will all be over soon,” then back to the static-fuzz music.

Many people have become so used to being placed on hold that they stay prepared to it. If in front of a computer screen they probably have a solitaire game at the ready, or maybe they will continue to work while on hold by reading a contract or a legal brief, or daydream of that great vacation coming up. While we’ve all been on this COVID-HOLD for many months now (seven I think, but who’s counting) some folks have taken advantage of this time away from a “normal” routine to do something different that has interested them in years past, maybe something artistic like painting, or writing, or singing. That’s a great way to make use of the downtime that was thrust upon us.

But I want to address those people that have decided to learn or re-learn how to play an instrument. Nothing accelerates your learning and improves your skills like playing with other musicians. We don’t know exactly when the Concert Band will get back to regular rehearsals, but when we do it will be a “soft start” as I’m sure a lot of our group haven’t been playing on a regular basis. That’s a perfect time for new players to join in with us. We welcome anyone with a standard band instrument and a willingness to have fun making music. Watch for an announcement of our rehearsals starting again, hopefully soon. If you are interested and want to know more, just give me a call at 503.359.1927.

Please remain on HOLD; it will all be over soon!

Fine for now.

Earl David Swenson

March 9, 1923 – August 25, 2020 Earl was born in Boone, Iowa. Memories from his childhood were wrapped in hunger. He was only 6 when the stock market crashed in 1929. He spoke of when his father lost the farm and moved the family into a house that rented for $8 per month. As a young man, he followed his peers enlisting right after Pearl Harbor and served in the Marines as a platoon scout and demolition specialist in the 1st Marine Division, which landed on Guadalcanal in 1942 under-supplied and under prepared, frequently living on captured Japanese rice. In 1943 Earl was injured and honorably discharged. He took employment at the shipyard and there met Ruth McCraw. They were married later that year and enjoyed 61 years together, until Ruth’s passing in 2005. Earl retired in 1985 after working 41 years as a network design engineer for Bell Systems. He then started serving the hungry through SnowCap Community Charities, where Ruth was on the board of directors. Because of his childhood and memories of food strife, Earl had a heart to help those who struggle. Earl and Ruth also served with Meals on Wheels by delivering meals to seniors throughout the Portland area for 30 years. He drove until he was 92 and then “retired” again; continuing to serve by being active in his church and said he lived by H.I.M. - “Honor, Integrity and Mercy”. Earl’s family ties thread through much of western history; his great-great-grandfather was Jacques Cartier, who founded Canada – Earl was also a descendant of William Brewster, a passenger on the Mayflower, who served as an English Official and Senior Elder of the Plymouth Colony. Earl was a devoted Mason of 74 years and a dedicated Shriner of 12 years; being a very active Greeter and was that unit’s Chaplain in 2015. He has received several service awards, including the distinguished Hiram award in 2000, and Al Kader Shrine was proud to honor Earl during the 2019 Fall Ceremonial. Earl Swenson was by all definitions a man with a passion for people and a huge zest for life! God Bless You Brother

A big THANK YOU to Noble Myron and Lady Doty Miles! by Noble Todd Weedman

A big THANK YOU to Noble Myron and Doty Miles and Baker County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen for taking care of the Shrine Steer and auction for the Oregon E-W Shrine Game Association and the related publicity. The steer auction raised $20,535 for the Shrine Hospitals. When combined with the $7,000 Myron raised from local farmers and ranchers and the $7,000 raised from other donors, the game should make a total donation to Shrine Hospitals of approximately $34,000.

the disappointment. Local Shriners, including Myron Miles, at right in the photo below, expect to raise about as much money as in the past few years — about $30,000 for the hospital that provides free health care to children. And although the football game didn’t happen, another tradition — the auctioning of the Shrine steer — will. Ty Morrison (standing beside Miles in the photo) raised this year’s steer, a Black Angus mix named Chubby.

The steer was auctioned off at the local 4-H auction a couple of weekends ago and I’m not sure how much he raised for the hospital. Noble Randy Guyer might have the total, and I’ve included him in the email. Myron Miles has been a long-time Shriner and has volunteered countless hours for the local club and the East-West Shrine Game. We are very proud to call him our Brother and fellow Noble.

TIP OF THE FEZ By Terry Griffith, Chief Rabban

This special recognition section is designed to acknowledge Nobles and Ladies who go above to help out our Shrine Center and our Nobility. This month I would like to offer a “Tip of the Fez” to:

• The Caravaneers- many of whom traveled to Baker City, even though the East/West festivities were cancelled.

• To Don Slezak, Wayne Dennis, Gary Scott, Larry Smith and everyone else who helped make the 75th Al Kader Golf Tournament successful (including the servers at lunch).

• To Noble Mel & Lady Velna who continue to whittle down the brush in the swale area of the Center and provide our much needed security.

SPOTLIGHT NOBLE RECOGNITION

Temples across our great fraternity have faced the financial challenges that erupted with COVID-19. To reduce the impact, Shriners International launched the BE MORE, HELP MORE fundraiser focused on temple life members. These Nobles who had finalized their own financial obligation to their temple, graciously responded. This display of servant leadership during the midst of a difficult season speaks volumes about our fraternity.

100% of the donations were distributed to the Temple.
