Historical Background of The Golden Temple
Situated in Amritsar, Punjab, India. Most sacred temple for Sikhs. Harmandir means: Har(God) & Mandir (temple/house). The temple houses the sacred scriptures of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib ( complete holy book).
1574 - Amritsar city was founded by the 4th guru, Guru Ram Das ji.1578 - He began excavation of a fresh water tank & construction of the temple site.1604 - Guru Arjan Dev ji the 5th guru , completes the construction of the temple and the complex that took 13 years.
- He also completes compiling the Adi Granth (first holy book).
