2018 Year in Review Dogs, dogs, and more dogs. That was essentially the 2018

theme. This bounty even included many more puppies than usual—with some even requiring volunteer bottle-feeders. GRRR’s Phoebe’s Place was a happy, but very busy place this year. We couldn’t have done it without GRRR’s Director of Animal Care, Mary Kenton, who played the lead role in orchestrating this effort.

We don’t know all the reasons for the increase in dogs, but we believe public outreach and education efforts, and the resulting publicity, created greater awareness of who we are and what we do. Along with an uptick in individual relinquishments and several groups of Turkey Dogs, we expanded our rescue of aging-out breeder dogs from both backyard and commercial breeders. Networking with other rescue groups and breeders has also increased the word-of-mouth referrals we’ve seen.

Along with Mary, our many volunteers give the most fragile dogs the underpinning and foundation to trust people again. This is especially true for our mill rescues who have experienced very little life and very little exposure beyond the pen in which they lived. When they first come in, a quick move or a new noise causes them to drop to their stomachs and hang their heads in fear. They carry their tail between their legs for weeks and sometimes months before becoming confident that they are safe. Our ever-increasing effort to save these dogs has had remarkable results with over 60 dogs from mills and hoarding situations being rescued, rehabbed, and happily rehomed in just over 12 months. We have the unique ability with our property, to let these dogs take the time they need just to learn how to be dogs.

We also continued our fundraising successes, diversifying our efforts with community and member events, grant requests, and major donor cultivation.

Our 2018 Gala featured Theresa Strader, Founder and Executive Director of National Mill Dog Rescue, who was able to give our attendees an interesting view of the mill dog rescue field that we have entered. And importantly, the event raised about $135,000. The 2019 Gala will be June 15 with speaker David Rosenfelt, author of many mystery novels featuring Golden Retrievers and founder of a dog rescue. It promises to be a lot of fun!

Our seventh year of Colorado Gives Day participation continued the year-over-year trend of increased numbers of donors and amount donated. It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from over 400 donors who gave us donations from $10 on up, helping us earn nearly $125,000. As always, we thank the Community First Foundation and 1stBank who make this valuable statewide event possible.

A key result of our outreach efforts was the construction of an addition to our Caregiver’s House, providing an isolation and veterinary treatment facility. This will enable us to separate sick dogs from healthy ones, and to have our veterinary team come to us for some needs. This will be especially helpful when a group of dogs comes in all at once, so we can limit

the number of times they need to be transported. This was made possible by a key donation from the Robert B. Sturm Foundation and a grant from the Pedigree Foundation.

In the past two years we have made significant improvements with the addition of our onsite restroom, donated by Russ and Cathy Jones, and improvements like our sound wall, property lighting and many others through a generous donation from Mitchell Graye and Pam Hollister.

In 2019, GRRR has begun a key staffing transition, with the full support of our Board of Directors. Our first, and only, Executive Director, Kevin Shipley has begun working part time. After five years, he is ready to gain some balance in his life and look toward his future. At the same time, we’ve hired Francie Rakiec as a part time Development Director to take on many of the fundraising efforts and events GRRR does throughout the year. Francie has been on the GRRR Board of Directors and is an active volunteer, so she is familiar with the organization.

We are fortunate to have these two talented and passionate people along with many volunteers helping us continue executing GRRR’s mission and vision.
