The 'Ira' of Karnataka played host to many glorious eras, Vijaynagara Dynasty being

the most prominent. There are many towns that still reflect and boast upon the past

glory. The vernacular and traditional style of art and architecture are evident at places

far and wide, with Coorg, Mysore,Vijaypura and Doddaballapur being only a few

to highlight.

The art of sculpting in stone has been passed down over centuries from generation to

generation in Hoysala, a small town in Karnataka. The unique technique mastered

over the years makes it easy to identify stones on the basis of the sound they emit when

beaten, that is to use 'male stones' for sculpting gods, 'female stones' for goddesses,

and 'neutral stones' for objects.

The famous temples of Venkataramana, Chowdeshwari, Ishawara, Someshwara,

Janardana, Kashi Vishveshwara, Nagareshwara and Arkavati amply exhibit this

tradition.

Many 'mane' dot the state landscape, aging more than a century or two, which have

turned into preferred home-stays for visitors and tourists from around the world.

Dodda Mane at Agumbe, Ammadi Mane in Koppa are but a few shining examples.

Moreyara Mane - the megalithic tombs in Hirebenakal, again in the tradition-rich

Karnataka, are arguably one of the best preserved prehistoric sites of India.

Doddaballapur remains a celebrated commercial centre right from the Hoysala

period. There is also a view that the town was founded by a feudatory

Malbhairegowda of the Avathi clan. During the period between the 16th-17th

centuries, it was administered by a branch of the Avathi clan. The place finds a

mention as Ballalapura thanya in a record dated 1598 AD from the local

Adinarayana temple.

Kannada style of architecture has some characteristic elements. Like- columns done in

wood or stone with curving detail at the edges, a floral pattern either on the capital or

the base; sloped roof with tiles where the roof framework is done in wood. The ends

of the rafters are again detailed with particular patterns; intricately carved wooden

furniture on oxide flooring or terracotta flooring; symmetry, proportion and scale in the

spatial arrangement of the structure at the planning level. This is taken ahead to the

elevations where the faces are balanced with different roof levels and symmetrically

positioned openings.

Golden Ira is but a small tribute to this much cherished past glory.
