A man's life is normally divided into five main stages namely infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. In each of these stages an individual has to find himself in different situations and face different problems. The old age is not without problems. In old age physical strength deteriorates, mental stability diminishes; money power becomes bleak coupled with negligence from the younger generation.

Today there are 77 million old people in India. This number is likely to rise to 177 million by 2025. 90% of the older people are from unorganized sector with no social security.In addition to the statistics above; In India about 7.5% of the population is above 60 years and the life expectancy is increasing gradually. This increase in life expectancy rate points towards the living aspiration of old age people. The declining joint family system in India and other countless factors have given rise to west-inspired phenomena of old age homes.

OLD AGESenior Citizens are pillars to our social development. They have worked hard all these years for the development of the nation as well as the community. They possess a vast experience in different walks of life. The youth of today can gain from the experience of the senior citizens in taking the nation to greater heights. Today we need to understand that they want to be bothered. Indian government has made a special cell for senior citizens for providing various benefits through its several schemes.

OLD AGECommunity is known by the way it treats vulnerable sections of society such as the elderly. Traditionally, in India, it has been a part of our culture, for society and the family to take care of older persons. Senior Citizens are held in high esteem and are given priority and respect in all matters. Today, rapid urbanization and the compulsions of modern working conditions have lead to a breakdown of the traditional joint family system resulting in the growth of nuclear families. Better medical facilities have lead to increased longevity. The number of Senior Citizens in the country has been steadily growing. In percentage terms, their population is projected to rise to about 12.4 per cent in 2026, doubling from 76.6 million in 2006 to 173.1 million in 2026.

OLD AGEAs their children settled down in other cities, many parents, who had conventionally enjoyed a place of pride in the family, found themselves living alone. The frailty of old age combined with health problems, crimes by anti social elements and insufficient income has left them with a feeling of rising insecurity. Children, being busy with their new lives, are unable to visit regularly. Parents have to cope single handily, which is quite difficult considering their limited earnings.

Ageing is a natural process, which inevitably occurs in human life cycle. It brings with a host of challenges in the life of the elderly, which are mostly engineered by the changes in their body, mind, thought process and the living patterns. Ageing refers to a decline n the functional capacity of the organs of the human body, which occurs mostly due to physiological transformation, it never imply that everything has been finished. The senior citizens constitute a precious reservoir of such human resource as is gifted with knowledge of various sorts, varied experiences and deep insights. May be they have formally retired, yet an overwhelming majority of them are physically fit and mentally alert.
