The GOA High School Robotics team qualified for the State Robotics Championship as a first-year

team and were the only Jewish day school in the state competing in the robotics arena.

The GOA Lower School Math League qualified 12 students in Grades 3 through 5 to participate

in the State Competition. Three of those students qualified for the National Elementary Competi-

tion, held in Houston, Texas, in June.

From the Head of School

School year 2013-2014 was an amazing year at GOA. From the first day of school in September, when we cut the ribbon at the Wilf Lower School Campus, we knew that this would be a special year for our community as we initiated so many new academic and extra-curricular activities afforded by our

new facilities.

Another highlight for our lower school was the affixing of the mezuzah, listening to our high school choir and celebrating our new lower school building. Thank you to Jane and Mark Wilf and the many Building on Tradition donors — those who gave to the Major Gifts campaign, the Sefer Torah campaign or the Lower School Registry. Each of you has made a difference to our students.

In addition to facilities improvement, our Building on Tradition Campaign has enabled GOA to expand our endowment available for tuition assistance and academic excellence. We have developed so many new initiatives for both student learning and professional development. These include:

• The Dr Lynne B Harrison STEM Program has provided resources to exponentially enhance our STEM program in the upper school. As part of this effort, we launched a high school robotics team, the CodeRunners, who advanced all the way to the NJ State competition, despite this being their rookie season.

• We fully implemented the high school Judaics curriculum, including the first run of our Grade 12 individual-ized Avodat Lev project and dedicated professional development time to the revamping and reinvisioning of middle school Judaics for the 2014-2015 school year.

• The Arie and Eva Halpern Fund for Jewish Heritage has made opportunities possible in the area of Judaics, such as the music and mural project at the Wilf Lower School Campus this past year.

We closed out 2013-2014 with the graduation of an outstanding class — the Class of 2014 — who will go on to study in fine colleges and universities, or to a gap year in Israel. And, of course, we celebrated our school at the Spring Gala, at which a record number of school parents, alumni parents, faculty, grandparents and friends honored Dr. David Gutstein, Dr. Alison Grann and Lower School Principal Gloria Kron.

And yet, we have so much to look forward to, so many reasons to be proud:

• Our school enrollment is up for the second year in a row, as we open two sections of Pre-K and welcome 17 new ninth graders to our Eric F. Ross Upper School Campus.

• Our Building on Tradition campaign is 96% of the way toward reaching our $15M match goal to achieve a total campaign of $30M. So we have just $500K to go to close this remarkable campaign and there is still time to participate. We are proud of this campaign that benefits our students and helps provide them with a top Jewish day school education at GOA. The growth of our school’s endowment over the last seven years is a source of pride to us all.

• We begin in earnest our work on the strategic plan adopted by the Board of Trustees last year, as we ensure that this roadmap for the coming years will continue to place us squarely on the path of exciting educational programs within a strong infrastructure.

• With the announcement of Adam Shapiro, Associate Head of School and Upper School Principal, as my successor as Head of School on July 1, 2015, we ensure stability and experience while moving forward.

The three pillars of GOA: academic excellence, Jewish tradition and values, and community continue to be our supporting foundation as we move our vision, strategic plan and leadership into the future. May we continue to go from strength to strength!

It is my pleasure to write to you as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees of GOA. Our school has much to be proud of — top academic programs, a nurturing Jewish community,

excellent administration and faculty, beautiful facilities, and an endowment for the future. We nurture each and every individual student to reach his or her potential. Our graduates become leaders in diverse fields and in the Jewish community.

In the year ahead, we are looking forward to welcoming many new families to our GOA community and are extremely proud that our enrollment has increased for the second consecutive year.

We are proud of the many new academic excellence initiatives that have begun as a result of the Building on Tradition fundraising campaign. These efforts have enhanced faculty excellence and innovation; STEM learning, Judaic Studies and many other areas. We look forward to continuing our excellent work as a preeminent Jewish day school, and as a resource locally and nationally in the field of Jewish education.

We are extremely grateful to you — our community of parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends who have supported us during the past year and enabled us to fulfill our mission. In October, Jane and Mark Wilf and retired Principal Gloria Kron joined members of the fifth grade

Va’ad at a special school-wide celebration to affix the mezuzah to the door of the newly renovated

and expanded Wilf Lower School Campus.

In a program made possible through the Arie and Eva Halpern Fund for Jewish Heritage, artists-in-resi-

dence collaborated with third and fourth and graders to create a mural based on the idea of al shlosha

d’varim, the world stands for three things: Torah, prayer, and acts of loving kindness.

The 2014 Recipients of Grants Promoting Teaching Excellence

The Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant FundThe Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Peter J. Herzberg z”l, a beloved past president of the school’s Board of Trustees. Herzberg recognized the important work of the Golda Och faculty and made his support a priority.

Golda Och Academy is grateful to his wife Hon. Lisa Chrystal and three children Ben Herzberg, class of 2006, Arielle Herzberg, class of 2009, and Ilana Herzberg, class of 2009, who have continued this important legacy. According to Lisa, “The Teachers Grant Fund is a fitting tribute to Peter who is dearly missed every day. As president of the board of SSDS/GOA, his commitment to Jewish education was unwavering and his support of teachers was legendary. This fund epitomizes what Peter valued. We are proud that his legacy lives on by GOA continuing to provide excellent, innovative secular and Jewish education.”

The Fund for Faculty Innovation and ExcellenceThe Fund for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, is being awarded for its second year. The purpose of this program is to award grants to teachers who have innovative plans in the classroom and provide the resources to make their plans a reality.

This year’s recipients will encourage older elementary students to get more involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and innovation in a creative way.

This year’s recipients are Debra Feldman and Rebecca Kurson, Lower School science teachers, who will launch the project, “Invention Convention at Golda Och Academy.”

“Invention Convention” will create a new STEM club for third and fifth graders and invite them to participate in an inventor’s contest where the students design inventions that have a practical application for everyday life. Inventions will then be judged. In addition, they will be adding a Simple Machines unit to the Science curriculum and purchas-ing supplies to support this unit.

Golda Och Academy extends congratulations to Feldman and Kurson for their innovative work and dedication in the classroom. The Academy also thanks parents Elizabeth and Gerald Cohen for their vision and commitment to Golda Och Academy in establishing this new fund.

2013-14 School Year Highlights

More than 300 people represented GOA on June 1 for the 50th Anniversary of the Celebrate Israel Parade in NYC.

On May 20, 6th graders performed their winning mock trial case at the NJ Law Center in New Brunswick.

Students enjoyed using new microscopes in the Lower School Science Lab.

The 8th graders went to DC in June and met New Jersey Senator Cory Booker.

On May 15, 1st graders presented their Siddur play.

Upper School students learned Hebrew calligraphy when Diller teen fellows from Israel visited on April 7.

“Geology Rocks” the LS on March 31.

2013-14 School Year Highlights

On May 22, Principal Gloria Kron was honored at the Spring Gala on the occasion of her retirement.

In May, middle schoolers competed in the Interscholastic Battle of the Books competition.

On March 26, Liam was the only 3rd grad-

er to compete in the North Jersey Spelling

Bee. He won the Youngest Finalist Award.

The 8th annual Katrina Service trip in December.

In October, Gan students spent time in the outdoor science classroom investigating tree rings.

Our fifth graders moved up in June.

In November 2013, the Lower School held a special Grandparents Day.
