In 1995 the parents of Gold River Discovery Center ’s Cub Scout Pack 281 wanted to do something for their charter organization. The leaders discussed it with the school’s principal Tim McCarty and it was decided they would build planter boxes for the school creating what would become the “Garden of Learning ”. The Cub Scout parents

donated money and collected funds and materials from outside sources. Then over several very rainy and cold weekends the parents built the beds. Over the years the tops of the beds began to rot and splinter making them unsafe for the students. Recently William Ruygt one of Pack 281’s alumni who is currently a Boy Scout in Troop 380

decided to replace the splintering tops and clean up the beds which were over grown with weeds as his Eagle project. William replaced the tops with Trex which is often used in building decks so they would never have to be replaced again. This was a huge project taking over 350 volunteer hours which included the planning of the project, and 900 feet of Trex to replace the tops of the ten beds, each which is 36 feet long. William would like to thank GRDC’s garden committee, Dr. Bindra of Gold River

Pet Hospital, Fred Simmons of Nation Wide Insurance, Berco Redwood, Home Depot, and the parents of Cub Scout Pack 281 for their generous donations. He would also like to thank all the Scouts who worked on his project. This summer the beds are going to be used as a community garden where residents of Gold River can lease out a bed or part of one to grow their own vegetables. The Scouts want to thank the community of Gold River for supporting this year’s “Scouting for Food” drive. Annually the Scouts collect donations of food which goes to the Cordova Community Food Locker. This year the residents donated almost 2 tons of food. Raley’s on Folsom Blvd. and Gold River ’s Bel Air generously donated the grocery bags and Viking Construction printed the flyers for the Scouts. Millie Finch, is shown with her two-year old, forty pound, Tri Colored Queensland Healer named Shelia. Commonly known as an Australian Cattle Dog, this breed were at one time bred to a Dingo, a wild dog prevalent in Australia. Millie is the owner of Trends-n-Treats, a pet store, spa and boutique in the Quail Pointe Shopping Center. Shelia, an Australian name for female, is a very high-energy, lovable dog that gives long hugs to everyone including her Veterinarian. Happiest in wide open spaces, the Queensland Healers are extremely intelligent so they need a job-such as herding, obedience or agility to keep them happy. Shelia spends her days with a couple of good friends who are owners of some acreage in the Foothills. At least one or two weekends a month Shelia is able to chase the Scottish cattle they have there. When she sees her special friend he slaps his leg and Shelia jumps right into his arms and he catches her. She loves to hear the guitar. When her friend picks up his guitar and plays the first few lines of “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin, Sheila will howl like a Coyote out in the wild.While wary of strangers, the Queensland Healers bond closely to family, though the owner must establish themselves as the pack leader. Their smooth, short coat requires only occasional baths and brushing. Always alert, extremely intelligent, watchful, courageous and trustworthy, with a devotion to duty making this an ideal dog.

Facebook is seeing the most growth among users ages 30 and older. “It’s all about your individual connections with peers.” There’s a desire to get in touch with like minded souls. There is now what is called meetups, where people that are on facebook, twitter, or linkedin can gather at local restaurant to meet face to face. Google and GE Behind Smart Grid

Two corporate behemoths, Google and GE have joined forces to develop a smart grid.

“Our goal is to provide consumers with improved and expanded energy choices, whether it’s buying renewable power, driving a plug-in car, or reducing energy bills by managing home energy use,” the companies stated in an announcement.

They are working together to try to come up with a way to integrate more technology into the transmission of electricity throughout the U.S. in the form of a smart grid that would enable large scale renewable energy systems to work.

They also plan to work together to encourage the development of plug-in vehicle technologies that would enable the country to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels for powering cars. Google is working on this technology through an initiative called RechargeIT. In addition to automotive related technologies, they are working on tapping into geothermal technologies for power generation.

GE, for its part, has pledged to double its commitment to renewable energy projects and spend over $6 billion by 2010 in the interest of these technologies. Google is planning to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D to support their collaborative efforts.

If these efforts pay off maybe someday useful and functional electric powered cars and smart homes may finally become a reality.

Kent Wong, President of Sacramento Association of Collegiate Entrepreneurs (sace) asked Gary Stalick to speak to the members. Gary shared information on time blocking to build business. People tend to get caught up in a time trap with never enough time to develop quality leads. Gary showed on a white board how to plan your time for building their data base of leads for business. He drew a rough draft of a matrix, a week’s calendar at a glance. Showing everyone where he blocked

time to work on one thing and one thing only. That was to acquire names and phone numbers of quality prospects. Gary went on to share how important it is to be honest in business, and that giving more than expected will bring delight to the customer. College students don’t always have a lot of money to start a business, so Gary told everyone how he started his first business without any money from his own pocket.

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour•2 teaspoons baking soda•2 cups butter, softened•1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar•1/2 cup white sugar•

2 (3.4 ounce) packages instant • vanilla pudding mix4 eggs•2 teaspoons vanilla extract•4 cups semisweet chocolate chips•2 cups chopped walnuts (optional)•

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Sift together the flour and 1. baking soda, set aside.In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. 2. Beat in the instant pudding mix until blended. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Blend in the flour mixture. Finally, stir in the chocolate chips and nuts. Drop cookies by rounded spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.

1 tablespoon cornstarch•1 1/2 cloves garlic, crushed•2 teaspoons chopped fresh ginger •root, divided

1/2 c• up snow peas3/4 cup julienned carrots•1/2 cup halved green beans•2 tablespoons soy sauce•2 1/2 tablespoons water•1/4 cup chopped onion•1/2 tablespoon salt•

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, blend cornstarch, garlic, 1 teaspoon ginger, and 2 1. tablespoons vegetable oil until cornstarch is dissolved. Mix in broccoli, snow peas, carrots, and green beans, tossing to lightly coat.

Heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet or wok over medium 2. heat. Cook vegetables in oil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Stir in soy sauce and water. Mix in onion, salt, and remaining 1 teaspoon ginger. Cook until vegetables are tender but still crisp.

DIRECTIONS

In a shallow dish, stir together soy sauce, rice wine, garlic, and ginger. •Place tuna in the marinade, and turn to coat. Cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat grill for medium-high heat. •

Remove tuna from marinade, and discard remaining liquid. Brush both •sides of steaks with oil.

New Late-Night Entertainment Show

Holds American Idol-Style Auditions for TV Host in Sacramento

UP ALL NITE is holding an open American Idol-style audition to discover a fresh new face to host the new late-night entertainment and nightlife program. Auditions are from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 in front of Macy’s in Downtown Plaza, 547 L St., Sacramento, CA 95814. The audition is open to men and women, ages 21 to 35, with theright look, vibe, enthusiasm and confidence to co-host an entertainment show.

UP ALL NITE is an exciting new late-night TV show debuting in Sacramento. The 30- minute show is described as entertaining and edgy and features guest celebrities and field reporters covering the hippest, most daring entertainment, music, nightclub, restaurant, sports, fashion and pop culture news in the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto markets.

UP ALL NITE is the brainchild of director-writer Deon Taylor, whose film catalogue includes the soon-to-be-released Chain Letter starring Nikki Reed (Twilight) and Keith David and The Hustle starring Charlie Murphy, Al Shearer and David Alan Grier. He says the show is like nothing Sacramento has ever had – and will wow viewers. Law and Emotion Too often clients think that their strong emotional reaction to a legal problem counts for something in the resolution. Almost always, it does not. The fact that a client is upset, or convinced that his or her position is absolute, or that the other person needs to be punished for some transgression means nothing in the legal framework. The outcome, by and large, will be dictated by the (proveable) facts and the applicable law. A good attorney points this out to the client at the start of the relationship, and doesn’t “buy in” to the client’s emotion. Statewide wide test administered and returned with

pitiful resultsOn March 16th and 17th, high school

sophomores as well as some upperclassmen were administered the statewide California High School Exit Exam. The test consisted of language arts and mathematics. The test was instigated after the No Child Left Behind Act was signed in 2002. Students are now required to pass the CAHSEE before being allowed to graduate. To pass, the test taker must answer 55 percent of the math questions as well as 60 percent of the language arts questions correctly. Last year, out of the 374,380 students who took the math portion and the 374,555 students who took the language arts portion of the test (many students overlapped), an average of about 71.5 percent of students passed. Now that is sad. About 30 percent of students who took the test did not pass. The math portion has 80 questions meaning that only 44 correct answers are needed to pass. Not to mention that this test included basic questions such as “What is the square root of 49?” If 30 percent of students did not pass there is a major problem. I have full confidence in my peers in their ability to master these concepts if given the chance Of course; there will always be the students who do not care. But realistically, with the bar set so low, more than 70 percent of students should be passing this test. The responsibility is then placed on the teachers to teach the material that will be on the CAHSEE test. According to a report entitled, Review of the Appropriateness of the California High School Exit Exam Content Standards for High School Accountability, “The CASHEE content standards are covered in courses through Algebra I.”To me, this translates into, “most students should know this.” Especially since at some schools, Algebra I is offered as early as 7th grade. If students do not pass the test they are given opportunities to retake and try again. But hopefully, with time, there will be no more retakes and truly, no child will be left behind.

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION GALA“Cirque du Coeur” (Circus of the Heart) was the spirited theme of the 19th annual Sacramento Heart Ball held March 14 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel. Acrobats and actors posing as Cirque characters entertained the crowd of more than 450 guests who marveled at lighting which transformed the ballroom into a circus atmosphere. Some $71,000 was raised during the evening in the silent and live auctions and special appeal. The event focused attention on the important issue of childhood obesity. The “Heart of the Child” award was presented to Dale and Katy Carlsen. Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute received the “Heart of Gold” award.

The event, co-chaired by Ettore Ravazallo and Dennis Mangers, benefitted Wellspring, a nonprofit organization which has been serving the women and children of Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood since 1987. Celebrity muffin scooping contests and the Rotary Rooters provided entertainment at the event, which increased donations and awareness of Wellspring’s programs and services for some of our community’s most vulnerable members.”

The other night I had the opportunity to join Gary (Stalick) for dinner at Aura in midtown Sacramento . I had been several times before, only for drinks with friends, so I was excited to see what the cuisine had to offer.

The menu showcases Chef Paul Ratto’s Italian background with traditional ingredients and bold flavors. We started with the shrimp bruschetta, which was the perfect way to jump start our appetites. The shrimp was succulent, the tomatoes vine ripe, and the goat cheese was a tasty treat added atop the French baguette crostini.

We sampled the duck, salmon, and the house specialty pork chop, all of which were cooked to perfection. There is a quality and integrity to the food that sets it apart from others and it’s obvious

that Ratto takes great pride in what his kitchen serves. We even had the pleasure of meeting him and learning more about his background with both food and wine (he is a wine broker as well).

Having unsuccessfully dragged two ex-husbands to ballroom dance classes (unsuccessful being defined by the word “ex”) my dream of learning ballroom dancing remained unfulfilled. Mesmerized by images of actors, singers and professional athletes dancing with the stars, I thought if Emmett Smith could waltz across the floor in size fifteen shoes, how hard could it be?

Armed with a free coupon and new gold satin heels, I signed up for a private lesson. I assumed my natural sense of rhythm would instantly proclaim me a star. I was wrong.

Sure I knew the guy was supposed to lead, but everyone knows women

learn steps faster. Isn’t it better to guide them? Not an option. The woman has to follow, even if her partner is waltzing to tango music. But after a lifetime as a control freak, I realized it wasn’t so bad letting someone else be in charge. Once I stopped fighting, I started gliding.

Next obstacle. My hips. Since my hips still swiveled I assumed rumba and cha cha would be a piece of shortcake for me. Nope. My hips only swivel in one dimension. Not that I’d ever had any complaints. But Latin dances require Cuban motion, a three dimensional figure eight using your hips. Practicing my rumba walk down Bel Air’s aisles makes grocery shopping very entertaining.

Especially for other shoppers.My final shortcoming was my

memory. My teacher discovered I learn quickly. Unfortunately I forget even faster. After teaching me the same steps four weeks in a row I asked if my dance lessons reminded him of the movie “Ground Hog Day.” He smiled and replied, “Give it time.”

After two years of lessons I have finally mastered the art of following (more or less). My short-term memory has improved dramatically. My hips are awesome. Except for those creaking noises. But there’s a lot of that on the dance floor.

While most of my dance partners make me feel as graceful as Ginger Rogers, occasionally I have a Three Stooges moment. But I wouldn’t be the

first woman to trip her partner. It’s all part of the learning experience. Best of all, not only have I lost ten pounds and improved my mental and physical agility, I’ve met wonderful people who I hope will remain lifetime friends.
