Introduction

Most of the Earth’s population lives in temperate climate zones. It is important to recognize the characteristics of these climates, especially those of the climate zone we live in. Therefore, we will try to recognize the climate zone we inhabit, reconstruct its main features and describe them whilst, at the same time, we recall and use basic climate concepts such as temperature and precipitation. We will also try to place these climates on the world map.

Objectives

• Revise basic climate concepts such as temperature or pressure and apply them. • Distinguish and classify the three main types of temperate climates. • Identify landscapes related with temperate climates. • Identify and describe climate features of the area the student lives in.

Competences

• Apply concepts to the environment we inhabit. • Ability to recognize climate elements in different landscapes. • Ability to re-enact a landscape and its elements.

Linguistic competences • Understand and express temporal frequency. • Make brief descriptions using the present tense and there is/there are.

Activity development

Materials: • Ballpoint pens • Coloured pencils

Timing and implementation in the classroom: One session of 40–50 minutes in the classroom: • Introducing the topic and activities: 5 minutes • Activity 1: 5–10 minutes • Activity 2: 20–25 minutes • Extension activity: 10–15 minutes

Introducing the topic and the activities (5 minutes) Temperate climates are located between the tropics and the polar circles. The difference in temperature and rainfall throughout the year causes the progression of the four seasons. The three main temperate climates are the oceanic, continental and mediterranean climates.

The oceanic climate has precipitation throughout the year, and the temperature is usually mild.

The continental climate has precipitation in one season only (usually in summer). Summer is hot and winter is cold.

The mediterranean climate has hot and dry summers and mild winters.

In this session you will identify these three main types of temperate climates and the landscapes associated with them. In addition, you will recreate the landscape of your own area and the climate associated with it.

PrecipitationThis is the fall of water on the Earth’s surface. It comes from the condensation of water vapour in the air.

TemperatureThis is the amount of heat in the air.

Activity 2Research: what is the climate like in your town?

Answers to the questions 1. Are there lots of trees? There are some/many. There aren’t any. 2. Are they green all year round? Yes, they are. No they aren’t. They are yellow, brown … 3. What colours are you going to use (brown, yellow, orange, blue, green …)? I’m going to use brown … 4. Are there rivers, lakes or other sources of water? There is a long river/there are some lakes/there is a small/big lake. There is no water. 5. Is it a dry or a humid landscape? It is a dry landscape/it is a humid landscape.

Description: some examplesNear my town, the landscape is dry. There aren’t any rivers or lakes. Vegetation is rare and there are only a few trees and some yellow grass. I live in a continental landscape.

Around my town, the landscape is humid and fresh. It rains very often and trees are green and very big. There are many rivers and lakes. I live in an oceanic landscape.

I live in a mediterranean landscape. There are some trees, but they are not very big. There is a river, but in summer it is almost dry. Temperatures are hot in summer and cold in winter.

Extension: location of temperate climates • Coast of China • Northern Africa • Southern Europe • West coast of North America • East coast of America • Western Europe • Chile • Coasts of Australia • South Africa

Activity 2: (20–25 minutes)Research: what is the climate like in your town?

Now that you have learned about the most important types of temperate climates in the world, you are going to evaluate the climate where you live.

Draw a picture in the box below, depicting the landscape that surrounds your town. Before drawing, think about the following aspects:

1. Are there lots of trees? ........................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................... 2. Are they green all year round? ........................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................... 3. What colours are you going to use (brown, yellow, orange, blue, green …)? ........................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................... 4. Are there rivers, lakes or other sources of water? ........................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................... 5. It is a dry or a humid landscape? ........................................................................................................... ...........................................................................................................

Now look at your picture and underline the correct options in the table below.
