Introduction

Most of the Earth’s population lives in temperate climate zones. It is important to recognize the characteristics of these climates, especially those of the climate zone we live in. Therefore, we will try to recognize the climate zone we inhabit, reconstruct its main features and describe them whilst, at the same time, we recall and use basic climate concepts such as temperature and precipitation. We will also try to place these climates on the world map.

Objectives

• Revise basic climate concepts such as temperature or pressure and apply them. • Distinguish and classify the three main types of temperate climates. • Identify landscapes related with temperate climates. • Identify and describe climate features of the area the student lives in.

Competences

• Apply concepts to the environment we inhabit. • Ability to recognize climate elements in different landscapes. • Ability to re-enact a landscape and its elements.

Linguistic competences • Understand and express temporal frequency. • Make brief descriptions using the present tense and there is/there are.

Introducing the topic and the activities (5 minutes) Temperate climates are located between the tropics and the polar circles. The difference in temperature and rainfall throughout the year causes the progression of the four seasons. The three main temperate climates are the oceanic, continental and mediterranean climates.

The oceanic climate has precipitation throughout the year, and the temperature is usually mild.

The continental climate has precipitation in one season only (usually in summer). Summer is hot and winter is cold.

The mediterranean climate has hot and dry summers and mild winters.

In this session you will identify these three main types of temperate climates and the landscapes associated with them. In addition, you will recreate the landscape of your own area and the climate associated with it.
