With thanks to “The Inspirer” of First UMC, Albany, GA. Here’s what the sign says: “We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, gay, filthy rich, dirt poor, yo no habla ingles. We extend a special welcome to those who are crying newborns, skinny as a rail or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome you if you can sing like Andrea Bocelli or if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re “just browsing,” just woke up, or just got out of jail. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, starving artists, tree- huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians and junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems or you’re down in the dumps or if you don’t like “organized religion.” We welcome those who are inked or pierced. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts…and you!” In her best-seller entitled Traveling Mercies...author Anne Lamott writes: “I had come back to live in San Francisco in 1982. I was twenty-eight, and my life was a mess. I took a sleeping pill with my last glass of scotch every night, then woke up late, wrote for a couple of hours, and walked back to the local liquor store to buy another pint. My life was utterly schizophrenic. I often seemed cheerful, but fear pulsed inside of me. I was broke...drunk...and bulimic. I was cracking up - but I wasn’t remotely ready for Christianity, though—I mean...I wasn’t that far gone. A year later...I found myself pregnant...unmarried...still drinking...and at the end of my rope. Across the street from the flea market I often frequented there was a little church (Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church) that had the prettiest music wafting out the windows on Sunday morning. I began stopping in the doorway of this place from time to time—just to listen to the songs. They had a choir of five black women and one rather Amish-looking white man making all that glorious noise...and a congregation of thirty people or so, radiating kindness and warmth—so one Sunday...a month and a half into my pregnancy...I went to my first worship service there. I was surrounded by love. Two weeks later...I announced during worship that I was pregnant. Almost immediately...they set about providing for me and my unborn child. They brought clothes...they brought me casseroles to keep in the freezer...they brought me assurance that this baby was going to be part of a family...and they began slipping me money. Most of the women at Saint Andrew’s live pretty close to the bone financially... existing on small Social Security checks—but routinely they sidled up to me and stuffed bills in my pocket. One of the most consistent donors was eighty-five year-old Mary Williams—who brought me plastic baggies full of dimes—and still brings them to me now. I give them now to the street people... who need what Mary has to give. The people of Saint Andrew’s saved my life. When I was at the end of my rope...the people at Saint Andrew’s tied a knot in it for me...and helped me hold on. They could have thrown stones at me...but instead they lowered my mat into the presence of God.” What kind of welcoming spirit do you extend to those around you at our church? At Seaside United Methodist Church (SUMC) we presently have four circles under the auspices of the United Methodist Women (UMW). The circles generally meet during the months of February, April, September and November. The UMW also meets four times a year as a whole unit. Our purpose is to know God and to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand mission through participation in global ministries of the church. We participate in a Prayer Shawl and Teddy Bear Ministry and expand spiritual growth and fellowship by offering a Tea, a Game Day, a Spiritual Retreat and a Day of Caring open to all women of the church, in

addition to the missions and activities listed below: M&M (Mary & Martha)—Education and Interpretation

Circle Leaders: June Donley, 575-5467, [email protected] and Marilyn Schenck, 579-0332, [email protected]

Meetings are held at the church at 10AM on the second Friday of the months listed above. M&M focuses on studying, interpreting and participating in mission outreach in a caring and sharing manner both in our local communities and worldwide. SEEKERS—Spiritual Growth Circle Leaders: Carol Matthews, 575-4267, [email protected] and Mary Ann von Hausen, 579-1965 [email protected] Meetings are held at the church on the second Tuesday at 1PM in the months listed above. As we mature in faith, our goal, both individually and as a community, is to enhance our understanding of mission and to expand faith into action. We have programs and studies that increase our spiritual growth and that lead to a fellowship of women who affirm, support and strengthen one another. FRIENDS IN GOD’S SERVICE (FIGS)—Social Action Circle Leaders: Sandy Kertcher, 287-5896, [email protected] and Barb Bernauer, 287-5648, [email protected] Meetings are held on the third Monday at 7PM in the months listed above. Our goal, which is a vital part of our mission, is to reflect and participate in social concerns of our day. We choose at least one priority social action issue each year whether it be economic, environmental, or a political condition that affects women and children throughout the world. GOD FOR FRIENDS—(TGFF) Circle Leader: Martha Hetrick, 575-6128, [email protected] This circle does not meet on a regular basis but strives to affirm, enjoy and value the other circles by participating in projects initiated by them. Their aim is to share the vision of the other circles so that as friends they can create unity and commitment to the UMW and by assisting and interacting with them, they can empower SUMC to accomplish God’s work and witness to Him so that all whose needs they meet know His loving care.

  • The family of Hugh Munday deeply appreciates your kindness and support as we celebrated Hugh’s life at the memorial service at Seaside UMC. They say it “takes a village” and indeed, it did as several of you were involved with the planning and those who attended the service. We wish to thank Scott and Mary Jane Wilson-Parsons, Stefanie Riley, Kathryn Parker, Mandee Williams and Jamie Shoemaker; also Ann Doern, gibby Lepsig and Betty Oakes. It was a beautiful service and will remain with us forever. The reception afterwards with those homemade cookies and lemon aid was a good time for us to greet people we knew and meet those we did not know who were Hugh’s friends and associates. Everyone was so kind and we just thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your caring and concern for us.

Hugh loved “his” church and he would have so appreciated everything you did for his family. He is greatly missed but we truly believe he is with our Lord and what more can you ask?

May God bless you and be with you for all your endeavors in the Lord’s work. Most Sincerely & Shalom,

Phyllis, Munday, Christi M. Davis & Curt Munday .

    Note from Billy Sirk

I would like to thank my Seaside family for your prayers and

support of my daughter, Deborah Sirk, during her recent Angioplasty

    procedure.

We are excited to share, that beginning on Sunday, May 15th, we are

offering a new Sunday school class during the 11:00 a.m. Sunday School

hour in room 210. This new class will utilize the “Genesis to Revelation

Bible Study,” a great curriculum that leads folks through the scriptures in

ways that inform but also challenge their faith and daily discipleship. The

class, led by Doug Allen, will begin with the beginning, the book of Genesis.

No registration is required, and we hope you will take advantage of this great opportunity not only as a formative piece of

your faith but also as a community-building experience that will greatly enhance your Sundays at Seaside!

    Get Your Flashlight Ready....

it’s Time For Some VBS Spelunking!

Vacation Bible School is only a month away...how did that happen! We are busy with all of our VBS prep, but it is never too late for you to join in on the fun. We are still in need of Seaside ministers who can share the week of June 13-17 with our Preschool and Elementary kids from our community. From runners to administration, from teaches to crew leaders, we have all types of positions just waiting to be filled by you and your gifts. If you are unable to help with VBS, but would like to contribute in some way, a small monetary donation goes a long way—it only costs about $5 per student to give him or her a week-long immersion into the love of Christ in a way that is fun and that will stay with them for the years to come. If you would like to serve, or get more information, please contact Stefanie.

Even if you are unable to serve during the week of Vacation Bible School, you can still minister to our

children by donating much-needed items that will be used during the week. From jump ropes to flashlights,

hammers to helmets, there is sure to be something you can contribute, and it may even be just lying around the

house! You may choose to donate items, or simply “loan” them for that week.

In the Gallery you will find tags hanging on the Bulletin Board. These tags have specific items that are needed.

If you can commit to donating or lending that item, please take the tag and write your name and the Tag # on

    Memorial Day—May 30th Office Closed

Bill and Mary were dedicated volunteers. Over the years, they had seen many individuals being helped by the good work of their Church, Seaside United Methodist. They wanted to create a legacy to provide future resources for the Church’s mission. Bill: The work of Seaside Methodist was important to us and we provided support with current gifts, but wanted to do more. We received their newsletter and noted that we could make a gift from our estate to

establish a legacy of an Endowment for the Music Ministry. We have enjoyed the various cantatas and the overall music program and hope that our gift will help assure that it is funded for continued growth. Mary: After speaking to the Endowment Committee Chairman of our intentions, he helped guide us in determining how to best fill our wishes. Afterward, we met with our lawyer to revise our wills and we each included a provision for a Restricted Endowment where the interest earned on our gift would be used

for the Music Program for many years to come. Our lawyer put language in the will that allows a percentage of our estate to go to our church. This was easy to arrange and permits us to still use our assets during our lives if we need them.

We were pleased when the Endowment Committee Chairman told us that our names would be added to a Recognition Board that is to be placed in Fellowship Hall. Do you wish to give a lasting gift to Seaside United Methodist Church also? Someone on the Permanent Endowment & Special Gifts Committee will provide you with information to assist you.

The last session of the winter-spring cycle of GriefShare is May 6th. Our group includes some who returned for a second cycle, some who have been bereaved for a few years and some whose grief is very new. There is no “right” time to start attending GriefShare. If you or someone you know have recently lost a loved one or are struggling with grief, consider joining us for cycle 9 of GriefShare beginning on August 19th and running through November 11th.

The first count of the coins in our “Change to Change Lives” campaign

has yet to happen, but the jug is heavy enough that it can barely be

lifted. Thanks to everyone who has been dropping in their weekly

collection of coins. Having lost our Christmas tree sales last year, this

supplemental fundraiser allows us to maintain our level of support for

those in need in Brunswick County. As a side note: the trees will be

back this Christmas season and we’re hoping the strong sales will

    return as well.

Plans for our June 4th Golf Tournament at Panthers Run are on

schedule. Our sponsor contributions are beginning to add up, but we have not yet hit our target.

Twenty-four (24) foursomes have signed up and would like to have 34 to round out the field. There’s

room for you, if you haven’t already signed up.

The men enjoyed a very good presentation at their April dinner meeting. Three local

businessmen spoke on their trials, roadblocks, and the ultimate success of their business start-ups and

topped it off with some interesting stories as to how they ended up in southeast Brunswick County. The

topic for our May meeting will be on energy concerns and the fundamentals, economics, and rise in

    popularity of residential solar energy.

Summer Wednesdays With MYF! Our MYF group will continue to meet throughout the summer months, having Wednesday evenings of Bible study as well as days doing fun activities together. There are two ways you can continue to serve our students through the summer months. 1—We are in need of Snack Suppers for the months of July and August. There is a sign-up sheet in the Gallery if you are interested in providing a Wednesday night meal for our kids. 2—We are in need of more adults, who want to have fun and share life with our students, to partner alongside Stefanie.

You do not have to teach or prepare, simply be available to serve as a chaperone on some Wednesday evenings or for some of the group outings. For more information, contact Stefanie. It is going to be a fun summer, don’t miss out!
