Modelling and Assimilation

In 2003, the modeling/assimilation unit of the MERCATOR system will be based on two components :

• a high resolution (1/15°) North Atlantic model, including the Mediterranean sea

• an intermediate resolution (1/4°) Global Ocean model

2001, Status– Project Team (around 25 people)– A Science Working Team, around 20 research teams (~70 people)– Links with european FOAM (UK), DIADEM (Norway) and MFSPP

(Italy) forecastings projects ; US Atlantic project (GODAE).

2001, Commitments January :

– First Mercator prototype approval. First bulletin 17 january 2001. Commitments for Routine demonstration phase (2001->Godae)

September :– Mercator Implementation and Budget Plan Approval for years 2002-

2005 (GODAE demonstration phase)– Commitments for the creation in early 2002 of an independent joint

agency called MERCATOR OCEAN– Plans for an operational center in 2006
