Heart to Heart Teacher Devotion God made people in His image and likeness. So it’s no wonder that there are many people who work at helping others. Do you realize that you are a person who works to help others? You are helping families teach their little children about God. Keep in mind the importance of your help as you read the following anonymous story. When asked what they were doing, three stonemasons working on the same project replied as follows: “Laying a stone,” said the first. “Making a wall,” said the second. “Building a cathedral,” said the third. Three Sunday school teachers also were asked what they were doing. “Babysitting children,” said the first. “Caring for the children,” said the second. “Sharing God’s love,” replied the third. Added Fun!For both hours, ask people in the church who work in the service industry to visit. Ask them to wear their work uniforms and bring items specific to their vocations. Allow children to ask questions, tell them thank you, and pray for them.

Activity Time (25–30 minutes)

Do these activities with individual children or a few children at a time to help children explore the theme, God made people to help us.

Welcome• Welcome each child by name.• Follow check-in procedures (name and security tags, etc.).• Play soft music in the background (tracks 8 and 9).• Lead each child to an activity.

Unit 3 ActivitiesUse these activities anytime during your session. Children will enjoy

doing them each week.Poster: Before class, display the unit 3 theme poster. ASK: Can you point

to a baby? the children? the family? I’m glad that God made people. Invite verbal children to say the Bible Words with you.

Books and puzzles: Use the God Made People board book and other books and puzzles that show pictures of people. Look at books with interested children and help children do puzzles. Talk about God making people.

“God Made People” song: Before class, print and display the unit 3 song poster from the CD. Play “God Made People” from the CD. Sing with individual children or small groups of children.

Mail Carrier Before class, cut a large slot in a box big enough to hold lots of

envelopes.Give each child several envelopes and a tote bag. SAY: Let’s get ready

to mail these envelopes. Have children scribble-color the envelopes. Guide them to place their envelopes into tote bags. Then lead children to the box and show them how to stuff the envelopes through the slot. SAY: Mail carriers help us by delivering mail. God made people to help us. Most children will also enjoy dumping the contents of the box and doing the activity again.

If you have older children, you could also give them sheets of paper to color. Then help them fold the papers and place in the envelopes for mailing.

1s will scribble-color the envelopes and stuff envelopes through the slot. 2s will do the above, place the envelopes in a tote bag, and place sheets

of paper in the envelopes.

Fun with Fire TrucksBefore class, tape tubes to the back of the house so it will stand. Set up the house and encourage children to drive fire trucks to the

house and put out the fire. While children play, SAY this rhyme: Fire, fire, fire, hear the people shout. Here comes (name of child) to put the fire out. Repeat the rhyme until every child has been named. Encourage verbal children to say the rhyme with you. God made firefighters. I’m glad God made people to help us.

Before ClassCover the photos with clear adhesive covering. Put the photos in the paper lunch bag.

Teaching TipIf you have more than eight children for Bible Time, you will need to either put some or all of the photos back into the bag so all children can pull out a photo, or you can provide more photos.

After children have gathered for Bible Time, sing this song several times as each child pets or hugs Teddy:

Show your Bible and ASK: What is this? Encourage verbal children to say “Bible.” SAY: We love our Bible. It tells us about God. Let’s pat our Bible. Hold the Bible in front of each child. Let each pat the Bible while singing “Oh, I Love to Pat the Bible” (track 1) several times:

SAY: The Bible tells us that God made people. God made people to help us. Let each child pull a photo of a helper from the paper lunch bag. After a child pulls out a picture, ASK: Who is that? Encourage verbal children to respond, “That’s a doctor (or teacher, etc.).” Comment on each photo, saying things such as: This woman is a doctor. Doctors help us feel better. That man is a firefighter. He helps put out fires. As children touch and look at the photos, sing this song:

SAY: God made doctors and nurses to help us when we get sick. Sometimes they listen to our hearts with a stethoscope. Show children how to use the stethoscope. Show children an adhesive bandage. Doctors and nurses help us when we get sick. Sometimes they put bandages on us. Sing the song again as you put bandages on children.

SAY: The Bible says that God made people to help us and God made people. Encourage verbal children to say the Bible Words with you. Hold the mirror in front of each child as you SAY: God made people to help us, and God made you, ___. PRAY: Thank You, God, for making people to help us. In Jesus’ name, amen. Encourage verbal children to say “thank You” or “God.” Have Teddy say good-bye as each child pets or hugs the puppet.

Discovery Time (15–20 minutes)

Do these activities with individual children or a few children at a time to help children continue exploring the theme, God made people to help us.

Building FunWith masking tape, make a few squares and rectangles on the floor.

SAY: Let’s build church buildings. Help the children build church buildings by lining up the blocks along the taped lines. Encourage the children to put some of the toy people in the church building. Preachers and teachers help people learn about God in church buildings. Preachers and teachers help us. I’m glad that God made people to help us.

The children could also build police or fire stations. SAY: Police officers help a lot of people. I’m glad that God made people to help us. Point to yourself and a child. God made people. Encourage verbal children to say the Bible Words with you.

1s will place blocks on or near the lines and play with the toy people.2s will do the above and say the Bible Words.

Doctor’s OfficeEncourage the children to use the doctor items to care for the baby

dolls. SAY: This doll needs her leg wrapped. Can you wrap a bandage around her leg? Show children how to do this. This doll needs some medicine. Can you give him some medicine? Show children how to do this. While children play, talk about their visits to the doctor and the many ways doctors and nurses help us. I’m glad that God made doctors and nurses. God made people to help us.

1s will enjoy playing with the dolls.2s will enjoy caring for the dolls, imitating your actions.

Bandages for Boo-BoosBefore class, write “God made people to help us” on construction paper,

one for each child.Trace each child’s hand and part of his arm on the construction paper.

Let the children color their hand and arm outlines. Remove the paper from adhesive bandages and give each child a few bandages to press onto their pictures. SAY: Sometimes we get hurt. ASK: Who helps you when you get hurt? Encourage verbal children to respond. God made people like doctors and nurses to help us when we get hurt. I’m glad that God made people to help us.

Saying Good-byeFor children who are leaving, give parents craft activities and copies of

Puppet Fun Our HelpersPut a bandage on Teddy’s arm. Go to individual children with Teddy or

to small groups of children. SAY: Hi, boys and girls. See my bandage? Have you ever been hurt? It’s no fun to get hurt, but doctors and nurses can help us feel better. I’m glad that God made people to help us.

The Mail Is HerePut the junk mail in a tote bag. Show children the tote bag and SAY: The

mail carrier just came. Who wants some mail? Let the children pull the mail from the bag and open it. Pretend to read a letter. I love to get mail. I’m glad that God made mail carriers. God made people to help us.

1s will pull mail from the bag and may open some letters.2s will do the above and may pretend to read letters.

“God Made People”SAY: We can be happy that God made people! Give each child a photo

to hold. As you sing “God Made People,” encouraging children to hold up their photo when you sing about the photo they have. Encourage verbal children to sing along. God made babies, children, families, and helpers. I’m glad God made people! Invite verbal children to say the Bible Words.

1s will look at the photos.2s will do the above, sing some of the words, and say the Bible Words.

Firefighter HatsBefore class, round the corners of 9" x 12" red construction paper to

make an oval. Fold the oval in half vertically. On the folded edge at 2½" from the bottom, begin to cut an inside oval, stopping about 3" from the top. Do not cut the inside oval back out to the folded edge. When the paper is opened, you should have a hole that will fit a child’s head. Lightly fold the inside oval up, forming the front of the hat. Using white paper, print and cut out a large number 1 that will fit on the front of the hat. Prepare a hat and number for each child.

SAY: God made people to help us, like firefighters. Firefighters wear red hats. Give children red hats and crayons, allowing them to color as desired. Then help children glue and press the numbers onto their hats. Invite the children to put on their hats. Now you are firefighters!

SAY this rhyme: Fire, fire, fire, hear the people shout. Here comes ___ (name of child) to put the fire out. Repeat the rhyme for every child.

1s will scribble-color, press numbers on hats, and listen to the rhyme. 2s will do the same and may say some of the rhyme.

Saying Good-byeGive parents copies of Family Together Time issue 13 from the CD

and craft activities their children may have done. Tell each child good-bye. Note: Family Together Time is also available online for families to download. See www.heartshaper.com.
