For me, this is in line with the reassuring message of 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your cares on God; for God cares for you.”

To know that God cares is a huge gift.

There is a lot going on in the world today. Much of it is frightening. No, God does not “cause” everything that happens. Yet God is present with us whatever we are experiencing. God faithfully cares for all people. Such a miracle this is! People of all ages, people of all types; all God’s children are loved by God!

May the grace of our Savior Jesus Christ; the compassion of God; and the strength of the Holy Spirit bless all God’s children.

God cares for you, Pastor Dan

“Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who

stands up for me against evildoers? If God had not

been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the

land of silence. When I thought, ‘My foot is

slipping,’ your steadfast love, O God, held me up.

When the cares of my heart are many, your

consolations cheer my soul. Can wicked rulers be

allied with you, those who contrive mischief by

statute? They band together against the life of the

righteous, and condemn the innocent to death. But

the Lord has become my stronghold, and my God

the rock of my refuge.” (Psalm 94:16-22)

“May you be made strong with all the strength that

comes from Christ’s glorious power, and may you

be prepared to endure everything with patience,

while joyfully giving thanks to God, who has

enabled you to share in the inheritance of the

saints in the light.” (Colossians 1:11-12)

Giver of Life, you have blessed me beyond anything

I could ask. I will praise your name forevermore as

an heir of the promise that I have through your

Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Comfort me when I fear

the unknown, and guide my steps. Amen.

We would like to thank our Ivy church family for all the love and support given to us during Charles Share's illness and passing. We'd also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Pastor Dan for his gentle and caring guidance during this difficult time. Ivy is a special place with special people.

Gratefully, Rose Share, Sue, Gary and Christine Lindhorst

Our denomination is the U.C.C. We seek to be a multi-racial, multi-cultural church. We seek to be a non-doctrinal, non-hierarchical, non-judgmental church. That’s a lot of hyphens, isn’t it?! Because we actively RECRUIT this diversity; we are a tantalizing, heterogeneous, (at times maddening!), and unique church!

We are a church with NO SET DOCTRINE, no forced beliefs. We definitely are NOT STATIC. We are an evolving church—interpreting and re-interpreting Christian faith; engaging issues and questions in an ongoing, vital manner. We are

The—United—Church of Christ. Whoever you are,

wherever you are on life’s journey; you’re welcome here.

AUGUST, 2012

Ivy Youth in Action

YOUTH MISSION SUNDAY, August 5.

Mark your calendars for Youth Mission Sunday, August 5.

During worship, our Sr. High Youth and their sponsors will share thoughts

from their summer mission experience in Birmingham, Alabama.

Those participating were Tara Lowry, Chris Moody, Kevin Wilking and

Savannah Wilson and their adult sponsors, Pastor Dan Wilson and JoAnn Moody.

Look for pictures of their mission adventure in this Ivy Vine.

“SpiritQuest” RALLY DAY - AUGUST 19

SpiritQuest...

In what ways is the Spirit moving us? Who does the Spirit see our church becoming?

How is the Spirit guiding us? Who would the Spirit like to see us become?

August 19 marks the beginning of a whole new Sunday School Year. It’s the day that all of the Sunday School youth (Pre-K through Sr. High) will be starting their new Sunday

School Classes. New Classes, New Teachers, New Friends. Be sure to be here! And join us in Fellowship Hall following worship for our Rally Day pot luck lunch.

Alpha-Omega/Ark Planning Meeting - Sunday, August 26

We’ll meet for supper at the Lowry’s for a hot dog roast and plan our activities for the coming year. Bring your calendars, your ideas and your

enthusiasm, plus food to share. (Hot dogs, buns and drinks provided.) Lambs/Genesis Planning Meeting

The Lambs/Genesis groups will meet during lunch on Rally Day, Sunday, August 19, to plan activities for the coming school year. Be sure to attend

to make sure your favorite fellowship and mission activities are included!

Share your faith. Spread God's Word. Show what it means to be Jesus' disciple.

Get to know a child. Learn more. Love more. Be more! Be a Sunday School teacher!

Would you like to be a Sunday School Teacher? Our Ivy Chapel UCC Sunday School teachers and Nursery workers each take one Sunday each month to prepare a lesson and share God's word and God's love with our children. See Erin Winship, Sunday School Superintendent, if you’d like to teach and she’ll get you scheduled with a week/class. This is a wonderful and rewarding way to share your faith with our young people. And join us for:

Teacher Training/Sunday School Kick-Off Luncheon – Sunday Aug. 26 Following worship on Sunday August 26, please plan to join us for a short teacher

training/get together and kick-off luncheon as we get ready for our new Sunday

School year. We'll have different curriculum this fall. We're going back to Seasons

of the Spirit which we have used in the past - this year using the Multi-Age

Classroom pack and a pack for our 7th - 12th graders.

So on Sunday, August 26, following worship, take a short time to visit in Fellowship

Hall, then we'll meet downstairs in Room One for lunch and discussion. If you have

anything you'd like to share with the group such as teaching ideas or things that

have worked particularly well for you, please feel free to share them with the us at

that time.

Please let Erin Winship know if you will be able to attend so that we can plan lunch.

Well...it's been one hot, busy summer for the DiVesta's. In between theater, weddings, lessons, gigs and Miller, we haven't had much spare time. Miller had his first swimming class. He did well, and we bought a pass to the pool for the rest of the summer. There are two things that are non negotiable for Miller, swimming and piano (of course!). Anyway, with all the craziness of this summer, its no surprise that it just blew by even with as hot as it has been. I cannot believe that I am writing "The Note" for August and getting ready for back to school. My piano studio is slowly, but surely filling up with new students, and I cannot wait to meet all my new students. However, when thinking about how exciting it is to meet all my new students, I can't say I wouldn't love to see some new faces in the choir loft as well. So, if choir is something that you have always been wanting to do, now's a great time to join. The choir is full of welcoming, encouraging people so if you are concerned that you haven't sung in a while (if ever), don't be! We'd love to have you. If you are concerned about time, be a part time singer. Come and talk to me, and let's discuss the possibilities! We haven't set a date yet for our back to choir party, but I will let everyone know as soon as we do. As always, our parties are open to every member of the congregation. You do NOT have to be a choir member to attend, but you most certainly will be encouraged to join!

Well, with choir on my mind, I have decided that we will officially start choir rehearsals on August 22nd. The Chancel Choir will officially be back in the choir loft on September 8th. We have several performance opportunities for later summer if anyone is interested in joining us. We will have an acapella ensemble performance on August 19th. The following week, August 26th, we will have a ladies ensemble performance. Additionally, we have discussed the possibilities of a men's chorus performance so if you are interested in performing with the men of the choir, please see me so I can have an idea of who will be joining us. Tons of performance opportunities, but still plenty of room for more. So, if you have an idea of

The Mary and Martha Women's Group met at Ivy on July 17th. We were happy to have Mary Mitchell and Linda Ledbetter join us for the first time. Linda is recovering from back surgery and brought us beautiful self-decorated pens and a box of M&Ms as a thank-you to all who prayed for her and did thoughtful things for her during her ordeal. Thank you, Linda.

Brenda Otterson described her work with refugees, especially from Vietnam, when she worked for Lutheran Social Services and other religious organizations in Minnesota. She brought pictures of some of them and some superbly sewn pillows, vests and other items from the Hmong women who were from remote mountains in Laos. She described the tremendous difference in the lives of refugees, culturally and economically, from that to which U.S.A citizens are accustomed. They became independent hard-working, successful residents in this country. Thank You Brenda.

The M&M Group decided to have a Fund-Raiser called Dessert-for-A-Dollar during Fellowship after Worship on August 26th. We will bring home-made pre-packaged desserts to take home with you, maybe for a Sunday evening treat. The funds raised will go to either the Ivy A/C Furnace Fund or JNM according to the wishes of the customer.

The August 21st M&M Meeting will be at Ivy at 1:00 p.m. Besides finalizing plans for the Dessert Fund Raiser, we will present the stories of some of the Students from Institute El Rey that are sponsored by Ivy members.

On September 18th we will go to Irene Gulovsen's for lunch.

She has slaughtered her beasts, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table.

She has sent out her maids to call from the highest places in the town,

"Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" To him who is without sense she says,

"Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.

Leave simpleness, and live, and walk in the way of insight."
