1 God Speaks to Me Personally

During former days I was an activeMuslim an organizer of the

Muhammadiyah movement and a preacherof Islam In 1947 I was chosen to be theChairman of the Kalimantan MuslimCongress in Amuntai together with KHIdham Chalid In 1950-51 I became aMuslim priest in the army in Banjarmasinwith the rank of Second Lieutenant Myarticles were published in Islamicmagazines such as Mingguan Adil in Solo Mingguan Risalah Jihad in Jakarta and Mingguan Anti Komunis in Bandung I

cooperated with aggressive anti-Christiansfrom 1936 in Muara Teweh (Barito) anduntil 1962 sympathized with groups whointended to establish Islamic rule overIndonesia which would haveautomatically stood against Christians

Actually I had owned a Bible since 1936However I did not read in it to find its

truth but to search for paragraphs which

could support my standpoint as a Muslimwith an anti-Christian attitude and thus beable to attack the Christian faith moreeffectively

I was a slanderer of Jesus Christ until theage of 40 completely rejecting hisdivinity I purposely ridiculed and rejectedthe truth But the love of God was so greatthat he sought found and saved me

In 1962 while writing a copy of my

sermon for the mosque I meditated over averse of the Sura Al-Maida 568 whichsays

Say O people of the Book You will benothing unless you uphold the Torah andthe Gospel and all that is revealed to youfrom your Lord

I had read this verse a hundred times butat last God whispered to my soul that theTorah and the Gospel which arementioned in the Quran are the sameTorah and Gospel found in the Bible nowI had always thought that the Torah andGospel mentioned in the Quran no longerexisted physically and that their contents

had been summarized in the Quran I wasconvinced that the Torah and the Gospelwhich form the Bible now were false andthat the original contents had beenmisarranged forged or added to by people

However my soul told me that theTorahGospel now presented in the Bibleis true My mind constantly opposed this

inner voice No The Torah and the

Gospel in the Bible have been falsifiedMy thoughts contradicted my soul andconscience and I became uncertain anddoubtful as to what was right

To make peace with my conscience I took the problem to midnight worship(tahjud-prayer) which is a prayer to Godrequesting definite signs for the truth Iwanted God to help me recognize which of the two beliefs was right This was myprayer

Oh God Creator of heaven and earthGod of the Muslims Christians andBuddhists God of the moon and the starsvalleys and mountains God of theuniverse please show me the truth aboutwhat is mentioned in the Quranconcerning the Torah and the GospelDoes it mean that the original Torah andGospel which no longer exist have beensummarized in the Quran If that is true I

beg you God to strengthen my heart that Imay never study the Bible But if the truthin the Torah and the Gospel mentioned inthe Quran means the truth found in theBible now I beg You to open my heart sothat I will be more eager to study the Biblehonestly

I did not ask anyone to help me make mydecision I did not ask a preacher a piousMuslim nor my wise and intelligentfriends I asked the omniscient God

directly to choose for me so that I wouldmake the right decision according to hisdivine will I prayed fervently andearnestly hoping for Gods guidance thathe would choose the truth for me and helpme know and confess the right religion

Every religious person hopes that there isreal life after death And being one of

these people I put my hope in God I

believed that after death there would beonly two places we could go to hell withits endless punishment of eternal fire orheaven to be with God in everlastingglory I could not think about my eternalfuture lightly

For example let us suppose we havebought 10 grams of pure gold We wouldhave to examine it carefully to make surethat nobody had cheated us so that wewould have no regret in the future Howmuch more have we to think very carefullyabout the future of our soul We muststudy and test the truth of our worship inaccordance with the will of God theowner of that heavenly life Otherwise wewill forever regret our carelessness I wasalways sure that the maker of heaven andhell is God himself For this reason I didnot ask the advice of a man -- neitherChristian nor Muslim preachers They arehuman beings and cannot know the exact

truth that is in accordance with the will of God I approached God the possessor of all truth directly begging him with hopeand trusting that he would give me trueguidance

Praise God all my prayers were answeredThis proves that he gives his truth toeveryone who wants to know it asking forit earnestly

It must be noted that besides verse 68 in

Sura Al-Maida there were many otherverses in the Quran which impressed meat that time For instance

Sura Al-Sajda 3223

And surely we have given Moses theBook (the Torah) so do not (youMuhammad) hesitate to accept it






Sura Al-Maida 546

And we let their (those of the previousprophets) footsteps follow Jesus the sonof Mary fulfilling what he had in hishands from the Torah And We have givenhim the Gospel containing guidance and

light and affirming all that he had in hishands from the Torah as guidance andwarning for people devoted to God

Sura Al-Maida 547-46

And the people of the Gospel must decide(judge) their matters in accordance withwhat God has revealed in it And whoeverdoes not decide (judge) according to whathas been revealed by God those are therotten ones

Sura Al-Baqara 262

Truly the believers from the JewsChristians and Sabians whoever believe inGod and the last day doing the gooddeeds they will have their rewards withtheir Lord and fear will not press them nordespair

There are still more verses in the Quranindicating that the Torah and the Gospelare a real way of truth in accordance with

the will of God These Quranic verses hadawakened my mind to delve deeper intothe Bible because God had whispered tomy soul about its truth

The next day after I had asked for theguidance of God at midnight prayer I felta distinct change in myself From that timeon I regarded the Bible as a friend nolonger as an enemy In the morning I took the Bible with great expectation and paidattention to every word as I read in it

because I wanted to know its truthprecisely

With the words

In the name of Allah the MercifultheCompassionate

Sura Al-Baqara 262

I opened the Bible At that time I intendedto read Deuteronomy 1815 This passageattracted my attention because I hadpreviously used it as a hammer to strike atthe faith of Christians whether they werepreachers or evangelists with theintention that they would acknowledge andbelieve in Muhammad as the prophet who






had been prophesied by the Bible in this

chapter I had known this passage beforebut now its meaning had totally changedfor me Truly the Bible remains closed anddifficult to understand by everyone whodoes not believe in it but on the otherhand it can be clearly understood by thosewho believe in it and whose hearts arefilled with the Holy Ghost

The words in Deuteronomy 1815 read asfollows

The LORD your God will raise up foryou a prophet like me from among yourown brothers You must listen to him

Formerly I had considered this passage aprophecy about the prophet MuhammadThe words a Prophet like me (Moses)indicated to me the identity of Muhammadas the promised prophet because

-- Moses was born of parents Muhammadwas also born like Moses of a father and a

mother He was not like Jesus Christ whowas born only of a mother without afather

-- When Moses became an adult he wasmarried Muhammed was also marriedcontrary to Jesus Christ who nevermarried

-- Moses had sons and Muhammad hadchildren too But Jesus did not have anydescendants as he was never married

-- Moses died in old age and was buriedand the same happened with MuhammadBut Jesus Christ never died He ascendedto heaven alive and was not buried

Previously it had been obvious to me thatthe verse in Deuteronomy 1815 indicatedMuhammad as the prophet promised byMoses but did not prophesy Jesus Christ

as a prophet and not at all as the Son of

God according to the Christian faith

But on that day I read these words slowlyand earnestly to understand the realmeaning When I came to the expression a Prophet like me (Moses) the HolyGhost whispered in my soul saying If you meant the similarity betweenMuhammad and Moses was that both wereborn of parents then they were onlysimilar to the rest of mankind who areborn with parents This characteristiccannot be used as a point to indicate thetruth of the prophecy

Furthermore if Muhammad was likeMoses because he was married then bothwere like most others in this world Sothis too could not be used to prove thatMuhammad was a prophet

If Muhammad was regarded the same asMoses because he had descendants thenthis fact could also not be used todetermine the prophecy because mostpeople in this world have children

Muhammad just like Moses died in hisold age and was buried If this examplewas used to prove the meaning of theprophecy then this point too could not beused to prove the similarities as everyperson in this world has to die and beburied To die and be buried is common toall and does not make a man unique

It became more and more clear to me thatthe prophecy of Moses only indicatedJesus Christ as the promised one For thatreason I had to find unique andextraordinary similarities between Mosesand Jesus Christ Indeed I found severaloutstanding similarities between these twomen not shared with others






-- During the childhood of Moses Pharaoh

threatened to kill him just as Jesus in hischildhood was threatened to be killed byHerod Not all people are born andthreatened to be killed during theirinfancy

-- During the birth of Moses the Pharaohwas furious and ordered that all little boysunder two years old should be killedWhen Jesus was born Herod was veryangry and ordered the little boys under twoyears to be killed In the whole world onlythese two personalities have experiencedsuch intense hatred and persecution

-- During his childhood Moses wasprotected by the daughter of Pharaoh As achild Jesus was protected by Joseph hisfoster father Not all people were protectedby people chosen of God during theirchildhood when their lives werethreatened

-- During his childhood Moses lived farfrom his home country in Egypt It was thesame with Jesus who during his childhoodlived in exile in Egypt Not all childrenhave had to escape to a distant countrylike Egypt during their childhood

-- When Moses served as the divinemessenger of God he received the powerof the Lord to perform miracles just asJesus who in his authority as the LivingWord received power from God to

perform miracles by healing the sick andraising the dead from the grave

-- Moses freed the people of Israel fromthe bondage of the Egyptian slavery butJesus freed his people from the chains of sin and death

These special proofs allowed me toconclude that the unique prophecy

mentioned in Deuteronomy 18 was not

intended to prove Muhammad as theprophet foretold but to indicate that JesusChrist was the Word of God incarnate

Although the love of God was so great thathe had enlightened me to see clearly theBible as the true Word of God I was stillnot ready to become a Christian WhyBecause there were some matters in theChristian faith I could not acceptespecially the belief that Jesus Christ wasthe Son of God Since childhood I hadbeen taught and so I subsequently taughtothers that

God does not give birth to children norwas he himself born

I also could not articulate that Jesus wasLord (Tuhan) because I had been taught

and I myself taught thatTHERE IS NO GOD EXCEPT ALLAH

I also could not grasp the meaning of theTrinity I was taught that

Those who say Allah is the third of thethree are heathen

I also could not accept the Christian belief that Jesus really died on the cross If Jesusor Isa al-Masih was a prophet theloving faithful messenger of God or theSon of God as the Christians called him






how could the Jews easily torture and hang

him on the cross until he died Why didGod not defend him but let him die on thecross Suppose I saw my own sontortured or even hanging on a cross Iwould surely fight those people whotortured him in order to save himwhatever the consequences How couldAllah lose his authority over the Jews Atthat time I really could not accept thismatter

In order to get helpful explanations tounderstand this I visited some preachersor evangelists and asked them why Jesuswas called the Son of God or Lord (Tuhan)and what was the meaning of the Trinity of God I investigated why Jesus the Son of God died on the cross and was crucified bythe Jews I also asked them about thedogma of the inherited sins of the Fathersin the children which I regarded an unjustpunishment of God

All the preachers I asked answered andexplained my questions carefully but atthat time I could not accept theircomments although these had beenwell-expressed It was due to our differentbackgrounds which were like a great gulf between us The differences in thereligions had not been studied well enoughto find some meeting points Surely wehave to study the differences between thereligions in order to find logical contactsto bridge over the misunderstandings Atthat time I was like a radio receiver and thepreacher like a sender Both were in goodcondition but because of our differentwave lengths his transmission and myreception were completely different Thereceiver could not catch the voice of theannouncer

The explanations of the preachers and

evangelists went into my left ear and came

out the right ear They did not touch myheart because I could not comprehendtheir vocabulary The preacher himself could not understand precisely mybackground so his explanations were notin accordance with what I hoped This didnot happen because the description of thepreacher was wrong but there wereessentially different ways of thinking andexplaining so that each could notunderstand the other In spite of this I was

hopeful I was still convinced that onceGod had helped me to choose the truth hewould surely open the door and give meguidance to understand fully the problemswhich had become my obstacle

My constant prayer was God I beg youthat you reveal the truth to me concerningthe word Son of God and the nameLord (Tuhan) for Jesus Christ I also begyou to reveal to me the meaning of theHoly Trinity and the Secret of the Cross

God you have given me an insight that theBible is truly the Divine Book so surelyyou will explain and clear all my obstaclesthrough the Bible which is the true Wordof God which never changes from thebeginning up to the present for ever andever until the end of time

Indeed Many times God helped methrough his Spirit the Holy Ghost whoworked in my heart I will explain howGod helped me to surmount the obstacles

2 Jesus Is Called The Son of God

In John 11 and 14 is written In thebeginning was the Word and the Wordwas with God and the Word was GodThe Word became flesh and made hisdwelling among us We have seen hisglory the glory of the One and Only






who came from the Father full of grace

and truthIn this verse the spiritual meaning of theexpression Son of God was revealedThe Word of God had become a man inthe birth of Jesus Christ Therefore Jesus iscalled the Living Word as stated in 1John 11

It is obvious that Jesus is not called theSon of God because God has physicallyand biologically given birth as many

people mistakenly think but because theWord of God was manifested in the Sonof Mary by the Holy Spirit

Muhammad himself testified several timesto the truth of this verse by saying

Jesus is truly the Spirit of God and HisWord (Hadith Anas Ibn Malik -- MutiaraHadith page 353)

In Sura Al-Nisa 4171 we read

Truly Jesus Christ the son of Mary is theAmbassador of God and his Word whichhe threw into Mary and (he is) a spirit of him

Concerning the expression his Word orthe Word of God which became thebody of Jesus Dr Hasbullah Bakry in hisbook Nabi Isa dalam Al-Quran enz (Jesusthe Prophet in the Quran) page 109 saysThe Prophet Jesus is called KalimatuAllah (the Word of God) because he is

the incarnation of the Word of God which

was designated to Mary to bear theProphet Jesus

Hence from that time on I no longerhesitated to say that Jesus is The Son of God because he is the Living Word of the Almighty incarnated Formerly I hadrefused to confess that Jesus was the Sonof God because I understood Sonbiologically and humanly

Sura Al-Ikhlas 112 says

Allah is One He does not bear childrennor was he born and no one is equal tohim

This Sura of faithfulness is oftenexpressed by Muslim preachers among

them I myself in previous days denyingthat God has a Son This contradicts theChristian faith which states that Jesus isthe Son of God Anyway a Christian canaccept this Quranic verse becauseChristianity never claims that God has ason in a biological sense as mentioned inthe Quran by the term walad whichmeans a biologically born son Jesus iscalled the Son of God by the ArabicChristians in a legal sense using the word

ibn By this term he is not called abiologically begotten son as described bythe term walad in the Quran

Therefore I would like to state that there isno single verse in the Quran which rejectsthe teaching of the Bible concerning thename Son of God in the legal meaningof ibn for Jesus Christ The Quran onlyrejects the assertion that Jesus is the Son of






God with the meaning of walad as a son

born by a sexual act between God andMary We all reject such an idea too

3 Jesus Is Called Lord (Tuhan)

(Tuhan is the Indonesianword for Lord)

Why is Jesus called Lord As previouslyexplained I was not able to pronounce thatJesus is Lord for a long time I alsocould not say The Lord Jesus Christ

Since my childhood I have been taught andafterwards I taught others that

THERE IS NO GOD EXCEPT ALLAH

Maybe Jesus was called Lord because hewas born without a father No Adam wasalso born without a father and even

without a mother and yet Adam was nevercalled Lord Or was it because Jesus hadperformed many miracles No this couldalso not be the answer Moses had donemany miracles too yet he was nevercalled God Was it because Jesus couldheal the lepers and raise people from thedead No because Elisha could heal lepersand raise people from the dead also andyet he was not called God Was it becauseJesus ascended directly to heaven NoElija had had the same experience and hewas not called Lord Then why is Jesuscalled Lord

Jesus is called Lord as we read in John 11and 14 because the Word of Godbecame man in the birth of Jesus ChristFor that reason in 1 John 11 Jesus iscalled the Living Word or in other versesGod incarnate in man

The word incarnate and similar terms in

connection with God should never betranslated or explained with its meaning inthe dictionary or according to its secularmeaning For example God exists -- Manalso exists The word exist inconnection with God has a differentmeaning from the word exist inconnection with man God exists byhimself (zat wajib al-wujud) He existedfrom the very beginning but men existbecause they were made to exist -- they are

created

For that reason the word incarnate forGod should not be translated or usedaccording to its secular meaningAccording to the dictionary if a catincarnated into an elephant the cat woulddisappear and an elephant would appear If a stone was transmitted (incarnated) intogold then the stone would no longer existbut the gold would The word incarnatein connection with God has a different

meaning The incarnation that is connectedwith God does not mean any change in theexistence of God because God neverchanges (Malachi 36)

God incarnated as a human being Thisdoes not mean that God no longer existsand only the man would exist This idea iswrong God does not change Godincarnated into a man means that Godcontinues to exist and that the man existstoo So the word incarnate is usedanalogically as a likeness for an act andfact exceeding logic yet its meaning is notthe same as in the language of man

God incarnated into a man means that Godhas manifested himself his full being intoa man and that he has revealed his willpower and love in the personality of thatunique man Jesus Christ Now we can






understand the statements of Jesus

The Father is in me and I in theFather (John 1038b)

I and the Father are one (John 1030)

Anyone who has seen me has seen theFather (John 149b)

The Apostle Paul said

For in Christ all the fullness of theDeity lives in bodily form (Colossians

29)

The second verse stating that Jesus isreally God can be read in Matthew 2818where Jesus says

All authority in heaven and on earthhas been given to me Jesus is theAlmighty the controller of everything

The Apostle Paul confessed

Christ is the head over every power

and authority (Colossians 210)

God himself is Lord as we read in theQuran

God is the Lord of the Universe

In the gospel we read that God theAlmighty has made Jesus Lord (Acts

236) Here we can distinguish thedifference between God and Lord Godmeans Theos in Greek and Allah inArabic but Lord means Kyrios in Greek and Rabb in Arabic The meaning of thelatter words is always authority with thelegislative and executive aspect of it Theauthority of God reveals itself in JesusChrist in many ways

1 Creating

2 Lawgiving and Commanding3 Guiding (with help and providence)

4 Forgiving and Saving

5 Renewing by his spirit

6 Judging

7 Glory

The authority of God to command toguide and to save is found in thepersonality of Jesus For that reason Jesus

is called the Living Word of God andour only Saviour As the Living WordJesus performs the divinity of God bypreaching and forgiving For that reasonJesus is made Lord by God (Acts 236Colossians 210)

Jesus is Lord in a sense that he has theauthority to save completely Jesus is theSaviour of us all the Living Word Jesusreminds us I am the way and the truthand the life (John 146)

It should be remembered that the obstaclewhich had made me unable to say thatJesus is Lord was the Islamic testimony Iwas taught and had been teaching others

THERE IS NO GOD EXCEPTALLAH

By that time I understood that this Islamicconfession does not have to contradict theBible In Exodus 203 it is written Youshall have no other gods before me Forthat reason I see that the divinity of Jesusis even suggested in the words of Muhammad which confess that JesusChrist is the spirit of God and his wordthe acting authority of God






Jesus truly is the spirit of God and his

Word

4 The Monotheism (Tauhid) of Christianity

The term Tauhid sounds strange toChristian believers because it is seldomused in Christian theology The Tauhid in

Christianity explains the oneness of theTrinity of God This oneness of theTrinity the core of the Christian faith wasoften discussed but is in general notwell-understood by most of our brotherswho have a Muslim education andbackground

41 The Only One True God

Every Muslim believes in the existence of

only one true God It is a well-known factin the Islamic doctrine that this issue cannever be changed or eliminated

The same conviction exists in the Christianreligion too Christians also confess theonly one and true God Are Muslim andChristian ideas regarding the term theonly one true God actually the same

In the teaching of Islam the oneness of God is explained in Sura Al-Ikhlas 1121

Sura Al-Baqara 2163 Sura Al-Maida573b and others

In the Bible the oneness of God isexplained in

Isaiah 455 -- I am the LORD andthere is no other

John 173 -- Now this is eternal life

that they may know you the only true

God and Jesus Christ whom you havesent

1 Corinthians 84b -- We know thatthere is no God but one

2 Corinthians 86 -- Yet for us there isbut one God the Father from whom allthings came and for whom we live andthere is but one Lord Jesus Christthrough whom all things came andthrough whom we live

After reading these Bible paragraphs Iwas no longer in doubt I was convincedthat my belief concerning the oneness of God previously as a Muslim and now as aChristian did not have to be changed at allIn other words although I profess to be aChristian I have not left nor rejected thetruth concerning the oneness of God I feelthat after becoming a Christian Iunderstand it more purely I reject only theclaim about Muhammad being a prophet

The Muslims always assume thatChristians violate the doctrine of theoneness of God They are wrong I confirmthat the Christian teaching actually purifiesthe doctrine of the oneness of God

The Christian monotheism (Tauhid) is thepurest and best teaching about God Wecan test this point by explaning themeaning of polytheism (Shirk) below

42 The Problem of Polytheism

In Islam polytheism is an essential matterWe should pay careful attention to it sothat the oneness of God in Christianity willnot be mixed up with polytheism

Polytheism in Islam is one of the threeunpardonable sins For that reason thisquestion became crucial in my attempt to






compare the two religions I always looked

carefully to see whether the Christiandoctrine contained an element of polytheism or not

First of all I found an outstanding verse inthe Bible saying You shall have noother gods before me You shall notmake for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on theearth beneath or in the waters belowYou shall not bow down to them orworship them for I the LORD yourGod am a jealous God punishing thechildren for the sin of the fathers to thethird and fourth generation of thosewho hate me (Exodus 203-5)

John reminds us Dear children keepyourselves from idols (1 John 521)Concerning these idols there must be aclear definition when something is calledan idol Not every statue can be called anidol Not every column is called an idol

Not every gravestone can be called an idoleither just as not every historical buildingcan be called an idol All those buildingscould become idols or be idolized if people perform religious duties to them orworship and pray to them

Occultists fortune-tellers and witcheswith all sorts of incantations andinstruments such as incense to call or toexorcise the spirits of dead people areindications of participation in polytheism

The Bible emphatically reminds us neverto get involved in such practices and toavoid persons performing such divinationas asserted in Deuteronomy 1810-13Let no one be found among you whosacrifices his son or daughter in the firewho practices divination or sorceryinterprets omens engages in witchcraftor casts spells or who is a medium or

spiritist or who consults the dead

Anyone who does these things isdetestable to the LORD and because of these detestable practices the LORDyour God will drive out those nationsbefore you You must be blamelessbefore the LORD your God

Concerning polytheism I summarize

1 The Christian religion professes thatGod is only one Everbody is obligedto worship and to be devoted to thisone God Any deviation to other godsis a great sin (read Luke 48 Matthew410 Deuteronomy 613 Joshua2414-15)

2 In realizing the oneness of God theChristian doctrine does not justify theexistence of other gods besides God inany form such as idols buildings orstatues of nature made by men noteven the Kaaba (Baitullah) on picturesor carpets printed in white red or black colours There is no justification forkneeling down in front of it nor at itsbottom in a form of worship (readExodus 203-5)

3 According to the Bible a real Christianavoids going to or trusting infortune-tellers the incantations of witches mascots (even if they aremade from a Bible) and the burning of incense in order to call or to driveaway spirits of the dead He must befree from the fear of superstitions andthe influences of dark spirits (readDeuteronomy 1810-13)

4 A devoted Christian shall and will notfear the influence of evil spirits orsomething which could be interpretedas magic or dark powers In manycases the Bible has stated that thepower of Christ has defeated and






conquered all the power of evil spirits

Finally all those evil spirits mustsubmit to Christ the Lord and hisfollowers (read John 1412 Mark 1617)

5 Christians will not regard certainobjects like precious stones in a ringcreese amulet or other things as if theyhave special supernatural power Theonly power in Christianity is the Spiritof God the Holy Ghost (ReadRomans 1417-18)

6 Fear uneasiness worry as well asother problems in the life of aChristian are matters which must bebrought only into the presence of Godin prayers He alone can understandour requirements and answer ourprayers (Read Psalm 53 Matthew625-34 Matthew 77-8) Do not go tothe holy graves even not to the gravesof the prophets whatever their namesare

Finally with a good conscience I canprofess and believe that the ChristianTauhid is the most excellent and purestTauhid There is no room for spirits idolsor man-made gods There is only one Godthe Father and his active living WordJesus Christ the Lord

5 The Trinity of God

Before I accepted conversion to Jesus

Christ the trinity of God was anotherobstacle for me It had also become anobstacle to many This obstacle is due tothe misunderstanding of the Christianfaith

I found that the truth in the meaning of The Trinity of God does not at all violatethe doctrine of the oneness of God

(Tauhid)

Sura Al-Maida 573 says

Truly these are the unbelievers who saythat God is the third of the three

Sura Al-Nisa 4171c also says

Do not say that God is three

These Quranic verses are often expressedby our Muslim brothers including myself before my conversion as a fixed formulato reject the Christian understanding of theTrinity of God Actually these Quranicverses reject only the belief in threedifferent Gods and not the oneness of the

Holy Trinity in Christian belief

We Christians can appreciate theseQuranic verses because Christianityrejects every form of polytheismincluding tritheism which is an unbiblicalbelief in three separate Gods MoreoverChristianity also rejects atheism andpantheism

The Bible has sealed the basic belief inGod as follows Hear O Israel The

LORD our God the LORD is one(Deuteronomy 64-5) Jesus confessed thiscreed publicly (Mark 1229-30)

In Isaiah 455 it is written I am theLORD and there is no other

In John 173 it is written Now this iseternal life that they may know you theonly true God and Jesus Christ whom






you have sent

There is not even the slightest proof thatthe Christian belief in the trinity of Godcontradicts the oneness of the only trueGod It does not even mean that there arethree united gods as some people interpretit

The Trinity of God can be explained asfollows

1 GOD the Creator called the Father isthe Creator of the universe similar to

the word al-Qadir with the meaning of the Mighty in Islam

2 His WORD also called his Sonbecame flesh in the birth of Jesus Heis the LIVING Word to reveal Godslaws and will to state Gods promisesto men and to talk in the language of human beings (His being the WORDis similar to the adjective Murid --Willing in Muslim doctrine)

3 THE SPIRIT OF GOD or the HolyGhost who gives help and guidance-- the true Spirit -- to believers whodevote themselves to him (ThisSPIRIT of God is equivalent to theadjective Muhyi -- lifegiver inIslam)

The three appearances of God (the Fatherthe SonWord and the Holy Ghost) areportrayed and described as three Persons(equal to the word Sifat in Islam) but

they are in one essence of Gods existenceEach one is inseparable from the otherseach has the same might immortality andneither one existed before or after theother Father SonWord and Holy Ghostall can be expressed by one word God

It is obvious that the oneness of the Trinityof God in Christianity does not violate thedoctrine of Tauhid and it does not mean a

unity of several Allahs or gods

The Quran does not object to or reject thismeaning of the Christian Trinity of GodWhat is rejected by the Quran appears inSura Al-Maida 573 or Sura Al-Nisa4171 which is a belief in three differentgods or Tritheism The Christian religionitself rejects Tritheism or the belief inthree gods completely

For that reason I think that there is not asingle verse in the Quran which really

conflicts with the Christian Trinity of God

6 The Death And TheResurrection of Jesus Christ

Sura Al-Nisa 4157 says

They said Indeed we have killed JesusChrist the son of Mary the Ambassadorof God actually they did not kill norcrucify him he appeared only so to themTruly the people who quarreled aboutJesus the murderers of Christ weredoubtful about whom they had killed

This Quranic verse is very often used byMuslim preachers and I had often used itmyself formerly to reject the fact thatJesus Christ really died on the cross

Previously I had thought that it isimpossible for the favorite of God whobecame his prophet to die on the crosswithout any protection Moreover as theChristians call him the Son of God it is






impossible that God the Father had not

given him his protection at all

After being convinced that the truth of theBible was supported by the Quran as I hadbeen inspired by Sura Al-Maida 568 andothers I considered the subject of theDeath of Jesus on the Cross studied againand researched fairly in accordance withwhat was written in the Quran as well asin the Bible

1 According to the Quran we read about

an event where someone had beencrucified and died but the identity of the person who died was notconfirmed The Quran teachers denythat it was Jesus Christ who died Theysay that the person who died on thecross was Judas

2 The Quran says the Jews were indeedconvinced that they had actuallykilled Jesus

Now I had to look for better and moreconvincing information about who hadactually been crucified and died Jesus oranother In order to get this informationwe had to find a proof of objectivehistorical documents This can be found inthe Bible which is an open documentationthat can be used as a source for truehistorical information

The story of the death of Jesus on the crosscan be studied in the four books of the

New Testament written by MatthewMark Luke and John The testimonies of these writers are based on the actual eventswhich three of them had witnessedthemselves

If we accept the condition of the law thattwo or three eyewitnesses for a certainevent are enough to confirm that this eventis true according to the law (Deuteronomy

176-7) then the testimonies of three of

these four writers who had witnessed thecrucifixion and the death of Jesus are truelegal and believable compared with thetestimony of Muhammad or the Quranwhich was written six centuries after theevent as an unconvincing suppositionbecause the writer did not witness ithimself

Another testimony can be added whenJesus was pronounced dead by thecommander of the guard Joseph of Arimathea entered into the presence of Pontius Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus The request was granted (Mark 1542-46) Suppose the body which wastaken down from the cross was not thebody of Jesus surely Joseph of Arimatheawould reject and deny its genuineness

Another proof is that the Jews had askedPontius Pilate to guard the grave of JesusPilate would not have guarded it if anyone

other than Jesus was buried in it becausehe had heard Jesus saying that on the thirdday he would rise from among the dead

Suppose the person who was crucified wasnot Jesus It was impossible that he wouldutter such loving words which revealed histrue character Father Forgive themThey do not know what they are doingand It is completed All this proves thatthe man who was crucified was none otherthan Jesus Christ himself

Thus I come to the convincing conclusionthat the man who was crucified and diedas related in Sura Al-Nisa 4157 wasundoubtedly Jesus himself not any otherperson such as Judas The true testimonyof the four writers of the gospel is quiteconvincing legal and true






61 The Resurrection of Jesus fromamong the Dead

The Quran nowhere denies theresurrection of Jesus from the deadAccording to the Quran Muhammadreceived a revelation about Jesus asfollows

Blessed I am the day I was born the dayI die and the day I will be sent alive (fromdead) Sura Maryam 1933

This verse convinced me that Jesus hadindeed experienced the real deathalthough his death at the cross is denied bysome I became sure that Jesus had risenagain (ubathu hayyan) The wordsubathu hayyan mean to be sent aliveafter experiencing the real death -- amutu

On the third day Jesus really rose fromamong the dead -- resurrected with hisbody observable and touchable(Philippians 321) The death of Jesuswould not mean anything if it were notcrowned with his resurrection from amongthe dead

Suppose Jesus had been crucified died andyet remained dead This would have beena terrible blow for Christians for their Godwould have died and vanished TheChristian religion would have not stoodfirmly until now since Christians wouldhave had no hope for their salvation inheaven

Also if Jesus had died and remained deadand if his bones were still in the grave

today why should Christians worship a

dead God For what purpose would aChristian be baptized in the name of adead person For what purpose shouldChristians meditate on a dead personMeditation would be nonsense if theChristians regarded Jesus as their Saviourwhile he himself had not been deliveredfrom death and was still lying in the grave

To prove Gods love Jesus had to becrucified not in order to remain deadforever but to be resurrected victorious andto live eternally even after the end of time

Jesus was resurrected from the dead andlived again not as a figment of someonesimagination but in reality as seen andwitnessed by many people

The death and the resurrection of Jesus isthe essence of the faithful testimony of thechurches in the whole world Our faith isfull of hope We have a Saviour who livesforever We have a faith based on loveand we inherit the promises of Godthrough Jesus We suffer together and willbe glorified together with him (Romans817)

For that reason we must be convinced asthe followers of Christ that we will beraised from all different kinds of death

-- We rise from the death of familydiscord disagreement and hate

-- We rise from the death of earning ourliving with pain

-- We will be raised from the death of ananxious heart

-- We will be raised from the death of aweak faith

-- We rise from the death of egoism






-- We rise from the death of fear illnesses

and suffering

62 The Meaning of the Cross of Jesus to Us

The Apostle Peter writes by inspirationwhat follows For this is commendable if because of conscience toward God oneendures grief suffering wrongfully Forwhat credit is it if when you are beaten foryour faults you take it patiently But

when you do good and suffer for it if youtake it patiently this is commendablebefore God For to this you were calledbecause Christ also suffered for us leavingus an example that you should follow hissteps For it is commendable if a manbears up under the pain of unjust sufferingbecause he is conscious of God But howis it to your credit if you receive a beatingfor doing wrong and endure it But if yousuffer for doing good and you endure itthis is commendable before God To thisyou were called because Christ sufferedfor you leaving you an example that youshould follow in his steps He committedno sin and no deceit was found in hismouth When they hurled their insults athim he did not retaliate when he sufferedhe made no threats Instead he entrustedhimself to him who judges justly Hehimself bore our sins in his body on thetree so that we might die to sins and livefor righteousness by his wounds you have

been healed For you were like sheepgoing astray but now you have returned tothe Shepherd and Overseer of your souls(1 Peter 219-25)

The cross of Jesus was the culminatingpoint of his suffering To die on the crosswas not something that he sought but itwas in accordance with the destiny

designed by God The deep meaning of the

suffering of Jesus had been prophesized bythe Prophet Isaiah (534-12) 700 yearsbefore it actually happened

SURELY He took up our infirmitiesand carried our sorrows yet weconsidered him stricken by God smittenby him and afflicted But he waspierced for our transgressions he wascrushed for our iniquities thepunishment that brought us peace wasupon him and by his wounds we arehealed We all like sheep have goneastray each of us has turned to his ownway and the LORD has laid on him theiniquity of us all He was oppressed andafflicted yet he did not open his mouthhe was led like a lamb to the slaughterand as a sheep before her shearers issilent so he did not open his mouth Byoppression and judgment he was takenaway And who can speak of hisdescendants For he was cut off from

the land of the living for thetransgression of my people he wasstricken He was assigned a grave withthe wicked and with the rich in hisdeath though he had done noviolenceNor was any deceit in hismouth

Yet it was the LORDs will to crush himand cause him to suffer and though theLORD makes his life a guilt offering hewill see his offspring and prolong hisdays and the will of the LORD willprosper in his hand After the sufferingof his soul he will see the light of lifeand be satisfied by his knowledge myrighteous servant will justify many andhe will bear their iniquitiesTherefore Iwill give him a portion among the greatand he will divide the spoils with thestrong because he poured out his life






unto death and was numbered with the

transgressorsFor he bore the sin of many and made intercession for thetransgressors(Isaiah 531-12)

Jesus himself realized that the prophecywould be fulfilled in his person as he wasthe servant of God mentioned in theprophecy

For that reason while facing this degree of suffering Jesus commanded the discipleaccompanying him who had threatened to

kill the soldiers going to imprisonhimPut your sword in its place for allwho take the sword will perish by thesword Or do you think that I cannotnow pray to my Father and he willprovide me with more than twelvelegions of angels How then could theScriptures be fulfilled that it musthappen thus (Matthew 2652-54)

Jesus was delivered to the Romangovernor by the religious authority of theJewish priest to be crucified officially notbecause he had sinned by transgressing theTorah He was judged guilty of blasphemyby the religious authorities the Jewishpriests because he confessed before themthat he was the Son of God the Saviour

The image of the cross should remind usand every follower of Christ that Jesussuffered and died on the cross as asacrifice to save us all from the power of

sin so that we may receive the right andthe spirit to live eternally in heaven

63 The Ascension of Jesus toHeaven (Miraj)

The ascension of Jesus to heaven (Miraj)was witnessed by his eleven disciplesoutside the city near Bethany (Luke

2450) As regards the ascension of Jesus

to Heaven (Miraj) the Quran has noobjections It is even supported by theQuran because Al Imran 55 says

O Jesus I am letting you die and amraising you to Me

There are two things which should be

noted in the ascension of Jesus to heaven1 The final message of Jesus to his

disciples the focus of his coming wasthe command to all his followers

1 Go to the whole world and preachthe gospel of salvation making allpeople followers of Jesus

2 Baptize them in the name of thetriune God the Father the Son andthe Holy Ghost

3 Teach them all that I have taughtyou about the gospel especiallyand the Bible in general

2 It was the promise of Jesus to give thepower of the Holy Ghost to all hisdisciples which means also to us whobecome his disciples and followers atpresent to witness the truth that Jesusis the Son of God the Living WordHis Spirit will remain with us foreverand ever until the end of time

64 The Second Coming of Jesus

Jesus will come for a second time to be thedivine Judge to judge the living as well asthe dead (Acts 111 and Revelation2011-15)

The coming of Jesus at the end of time tobe the righteous Judge is also the






conviction of the Muslims in general as

this event is foretold in the traditionamong others in

Soon will come down to you the Sonof Mary as the leading Priest andrighteous Judge

3 The Prophet Muhammad once swore to

convince others that Jesus Christ theSon of Mary would come again tobecome the Righteous JudgeMuhammad said

By God truly the Son of Mary willdescend as the righteous Judge(Hadith Muslim book 1 page 76)

The explanation of this Hadith is thesecond coming of Jesus Christ at the endof time The word hakaman (being a

judge) suggests that Jesus Christ will notcome a second time as a Prophet bringingthe law of God in the Bible or the Quranwhich are used at the present but he willcome as a Judge of all people with a newbook The Book of Life (Revelation

2011-15)

The verse from Hadith al-SahihBukhari-Muslim above can be comparedwith the verse of the Bible Romans 216

This will take place on the day when Godwill judge mens secrets through JesusChrist as my gospel declares

For that reason there was no other obstaclewhich hindered me from accepting Jesusas my God and personal Saviour and

waiting for his second coming as theRighteous Judge

For the salvation of the followers of Jesusthe Quran has given the followingtestimony

God said to Jesus

I have let you die and ascended you tome I have purged you from theunbelievers and raised those who followyou above those who do not believe until

the end of time

Obviously the Quran testifies that thesalvation of the followers of Christ isguaranteed which means eternal life in

heaven as Jesus himself has saidI tell you the truth whoever hears myword and believes him who sent me haseternal life and will not be condemned hehas crossed over from death to life (John524)

I am the way and the truth and the lifeNo one comes to the Father except through






me (John 146)

7 The Truth Of The Bible

As I described in the beginning of thistestimony the first thing that stimulatedme to look for the truth of the Bible wasone verse in Sura al-Maida 568 thatconfirms that the Bible (the Torah and theGospel) is the right book for all peoplewho worship God in truth according to thewill of God

There are more verses in the Quran whichare often used by the Muslim preachers asI had used them formerly which aremisinterpreted as a proof that the Bible(the Torah and the Gospel) has beenfalsified and changed by the soiled handsof ignorant people

After all I wanted to learn the real meaningof those Quranic verses in the original

just as I wanted to understand the contents

of the Bible by itselfI tried truthfully to check how much truthwas contained in these Quranic verseswhich led me to the conclusion

1 Sura al-Baqara 275

Do you still expect them to believeyou while some group of them hearthe word of God then change themafter they learn them just as if they areclever

In general the Muslims interpret theterm a group of them (fariqunminhum) as Bible experts (Jews or

Christians) who have changed those

words of God the texts of the Torahand the Gospel

According to my investigation themeaning of Sura al-Bakara 75 is notso What was meant as a group of them are Muslims who originatedfrom among the Jews or Christiansthen rejected Islam after they hadlearned the real teaching of Muhammad The Quran accused themof changing the meaning orinterpretation of the Quranic texts notthe Bible

This can be understood by the versesaying Do you (Muhammad) stillexpect them to believe you You inthe sentence clearly meansMuhammad But after they (the Jewsor Christians) had acceptedMuhammad as their prophet theyrejected Islam and were accused of

changing the meaning of the words of God the Quran and were alsoaccused of foolishness lying andignorance

This Quranic verse had not beenwritten against the experts of the Jewsor the Christians and does not claimthat they have changed the Bible butspeaks about the text of the Quranitself


Whichever verses that We have wipedout or We have made people to forgetthem We will change them with better






or equal ones

With the wiped out verses referred toin Sura al-Baqara 2106 Muslims ingeneral mean the verses of the Bible inthe Torah and Gospel

But from some Islamic interpretationof the Quran you can find that thewiped out verse means severalQuranic verses because their laws andcommands have been abolished Thebook Al-Tadjdid Fil-Islam says that

there are five to 50 verses in the Quranthat have been abrogated

Other people say that the meaning of the wiped out verses are those whichconcern the miracles of Muhammadbecause Muhammad as a prophet withthe revelation from God was unable toperform miracles like Moses and Jesusprophets who had come before himTherefore the verse of Sura al-Baqara2106 cannot be used as a proof toreject the truth of the Bible as a DivineBook which is the real foundation of truth for every one who will worshipGod truly

3 Sura al-Maida 513

Because they violated theirpromise We curse them and madetheir hearts stiff as stones They enjoyto change the words of God from theirplaces and they (intentionally) forgotsome of that they had been remindedof and you (Muhammad) will always

see betrayal from them with the

exception of a few of them who willnot betray

To the word they in Sura al-Maida513 they generally addJewsChristians in parenthesesintentionally and from the contents of the sentence They enjoy to changethe words of God from their placesthey interpret that the truth of the Biblein the TorahGospel has been changedand wiped out

Actually this verse just as the words inSura al-Baqara 275 is applied to someMuslims during the life of Muhammad who were originallybelievers in the Jewish or Christianreligion turned to Islam and later onconverted again to their own religionand rejected Islam The Quran accusedthem of betraying the Quranic versesby changing their words They rejected

the message of Islam after theylearned the real teaching of Muhammad The subject can be read inthe context of Sura al-Maida 57-14

Obviously the verses of the Suraal-Maida 513 too cannot be used as abasis for rejecting the truth of theBible

Conclusion

There are more verses in the Quran with

the same tone as the ones above whichseem to reject the truth in the Bible Afterstudying them fairly I confess that there isnot a single verse in the Quran whichunequivocally states that the Bible (theTorah and the Gospel) has been falsified orchanged from its original truth

Finally I conclude that what the Quran






says in Sura al-Maida 568 al-Baqara

262 al-Sajda 3223 and others which Iexpressed previously is convincing thatthe Bible (the Torah and the Gospel) is thereal truth for everyone who wants toworship God in accordance to his will

8 My Struggle Against TheEnvironment

Although I became firm and convincedabout this truth and was ready to accept

Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour yet Ihad not been christened in an official waybecause there was the influence of theenvironment which had become anobstacle to me I was haunted by fear andanxiety

My experience shows that there are manypeople who express their willingness toaccept Jesus as their personal Saviour yetthey often stumble against the influencesof their environment maybe because they

are unwilling or afraid to oppose theirparents Sometimes they fear that theirbosses will fire them if they becomeChristians There was a believer whoclashed with his wife-to-be because hewanted to accept Jesus together with herthere are other obstacles that hinder peoplefrom allowing Jesus to reign fully in theirheart

The fearful influence of environment was

pointed out in a warning by Jesus writtenin Matthew 1034-36 He describes thesufferings which may be faced by everyone who wants to follow Christ he may behated by his parents his family ties maybe severed his own life may bethreatened However for those who madethe decision to accept Jesus as Lord and lethim reign in their hearts such anxiety

should not long exist Each anxiety will be

overcome by the help of God I myself experienced such environmental pressuresYet God always opened a way of escape

From 1961 until 1964 I still performeddual religious duties I prayed according toIslam and went to the mosque everyFriday I went also to church every Sundayand on Saturdays I worshipped in anAdventist Church At that time I did not goto a church out of conviction It was morethat I wanted to study the truth I had oftenread descriptions from non-Christianswhich said that the people in the churchworship idols such as statues and picturesFor that reason I visited each churcharound Jakarta by turn on those Sundays Ieven visited more than one church on aSunday to find out whether there wereidol-worshippers in front of statues orpictures

Finally I could draw a conclusion and

prove that my suspicions were unfoundedThere was no idol-worship in any churchthat I visited

Since 1964 my soul had actually beenfilled by the Spirit of God the Holy Ghostor the Spirit of Truth From that time Idecided to accept Jesus as my Saviourwholeheartedly Yet there was still aweakness I did not dare to state myconviction openly I still kept myChristianity a secret I visited the Christian

Church of Indonesia in Kwitang for thefirst time asking to be baptized in secret asI did not want it to be known by myfamily nor among others or even by mywife I did not know who the churchwarden was yet my special request wasrejected as no one could be baptized insecret






Several weeks later with the same

intention in mind I went to meet Rev JSapulete at the Bethel Church inJatinegara He was ready to baptize me atonce on condition that I would bring twoor three Christian neighbors who couldguide me in my spiritual life so that Iwould live as a Christian I could notaccept this condition as I still could notdeclare publicly that I was a ChristianThis was due to the influence of theenvironment especially my own

household I was afraid there would be agreat disturbance in my home I was alsoafraid to ask my wife to accompany me tochurch out of fear that as revenge shewould ask me to go to the Islamicmarriage official for a divorce I wasfearful of facing divorce procedures Forthat reason I had wanted to accept JesusChrist only in secret

Yet my soul was not undecided anymore

I had no doubts about accepting JesusChrist

Therefore I did not perform dual religiousworship any longer I only went to churchYet there persisted some fear and worryconcerning the reaction of my family I didnot know the way to overcome this I didnot go to anyone to ask for advice in mycase At that time I felt my strugglekeenly

Nevertheless God in his timing helped meto overcome my struggle Formerly I hadassumed that if I discussed with my wifethe matter of changing our religion fromIslam to Christianity this would cause ustrouble But God graciously opened thedoor of truth even through my wifeherself She was given peace through thelight and the beauty of Christmas trees

which by that time were shining brightly

in the homes of many Christians Itbecame a sign to her of how beautiful lifein a Christian family can be She felt thepeace in the Christmas songs and thewarmth and brightness of the Christmasspirit

To express her feelings my wife and oneof my daughters came to me to tell meabout their eager-ness to becomeChristians in a Christian family It was theopportunity I had been waiting for

The next day was Christmas and I metRev J Sapulete for the second timetelling him that I and my family wanted tobe baptized and receive Jesus Christ Myrequest was granted immediately and we --myself my wife and seven of our children-- were baptized as one family on Dec 261969 by Rev J Sapulete at Gereja BethelJemaat GPIB One week later our sonfollowed us He also had often gone to the

church in secret as he was afraid I wouldfind out the truth I myself had been goingto the church in secret too as I was afraidmy wife and children would learn about itSo actually we had been playinghide-and-seek Praise God all themembers of my family eventually becamefollowers of Jesus and let him reign intheir hearts

81 The Many Blessings

After I and my family were baptized onDecember 26 1969 our householdexperienced happy and joyous changesWe received many blessings whichchanged our life

The Apostle Paul says Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creationthe old has gone the new has come (2






Corinthians 517)

When someone accepts Jesus as hisSaviour God makes a change in his lifeThe image of Christ will be imprinted inhim The Bible says So God createdman in his own image (Genesis 127)From this new character originates a new

joy and love and different longings Whathe formerly loved he now hates and whathe formerly hated he now loves His lifehas changed This change is apparentvisually and will be seen by the people

around him His ways of life will bechanged and these will even bringchanges in the words he utters Howwonderful

I experienced these changes and felt themin our life as a family Hot tempersdisappeared and changed into loving onesIn our spiritual life we felt peace andhappiness We had no more doubts Oursouls were secure and full of joy Even inour material life we were blessedabundantly This experience proves thetruth of Gods promises that are fulfilledby Jesus Christ in his followers

The change in our household was obviousand happened so fast that we became anobject of slander Our neighbours and ourrelatives thought that we had received aidfrom the church as a reward for becomingChristians People mocked us saying If you want to become rich quickly justfollow the attitude of Mr Ambrie and

support from the church in millions of rupiahs

They suspected that our life was blessedthrough the donations of the church as abribe for becoming Christians No not atall We never got any help from the churchnor from anybody as coercion to acceptChrist We got no money materials norpromises of work not even a cent Indeedour blessed life at that time was throughthe generosity of God only This is astanding promise of God that all whobelieve will be blessed abundantly

82 My Passive Christian Years

I was a passive Christian from 1970-1972I was busy maintaining my business andsupporting my household I only went tochurch on Sundays and read the Bible inmy spare time God has convicted me forsuch an attitude I felt it clearly that at that

time God warned me If you want to be aChristian it is not enough to have such apassive attitude It is not proper for you tosit idly enjoying the blessings of God thathave filled your life As a Christiandisciple of Christ you must stand up andgive a clear testimony telling the gospel of Christ as he has commanded you inMatthew 2819-20

How could I begin to give an opentestimony and tell the gospel plainlyIndeed I was willing to do so yet I did notknow how to start For this God onceagain opened the way and this is how hedid it

One day my best friend from Banjarmasincame to spend the night with us He was atrue friend in the full meaning of the wordfor he stood with me during good or bad






days Whenever arrests were made by

Dutch soldiers we always met each otherin prison or the camp of the prisoners

He greeted us as usual as in our housethere was no sign that we had becomeChristians When he said Assalamualaikum I replied wa alaikum asalaamMy friend had heard from neighbors that Ihad become a Christian He had declaredthat this could not be possible and hadnearly convinced my neighbors of this Hetold them I have known my friendHamran Ambrie well not only in Jakartabut in Banjarmasin too He is not anordinary Muslim believer -- he isconscientious in his faith In the provincehe is known as a militant Muslim fighterhe is even an anti-Christian one of theMuhammadiyah leaders a Muslim

journalist and preacher of Islam who iswell known in Central as well as in EastKalimantan Moreover in the IslamicCongress of the Whole Kalimantan in

Amuntai 1947 Hamran Ambrie was oneof its promoters In the IndonesianNational Army he was appointed as theMuslim Head Preacher of the Army inBanjarmasin So I am convinced thatHamran Ambrie will never consciouslychange his Muslim religion toChristianity

But my neighbor convinced him that forseveral years the people in my village hadseen me going to church regularly and setup a Christmas tree during the Christmasseason They told him to ask me directlyfor further explanations

So as soon as he came into my house for avisit he asked me directly whether thenews that I had become a Christian wastrue I answered the question without anydoubt Yes that is right I and my whole

family have been baptized

Hearing my answer he wept He was verysorry because something he deeplyregretted had taken place But he could notdo anything and just stood in astonishmentfor a moment After his return toBanjarmasin he told other peopleespecially my good friends about myconversion to Christianity

Banjarmasin by another of my goodfriends who was a Muslim journalist Incapital letters H Arsyad Maran wrote

The Muslims in Banjarmasin also gave aprejudiced reaction to this exciting newsRecent economic problems can make onechange his religion The name of thisMuslim was not given

Even the Muslim university IAINAntasari reacted to the news of myconversion Meanwhile the Secretary of






PMW (Muhammadiyah) of Banjarmasin

tried to deny that I had been aMuhammadiyah figure but acknowledgedme as a Muslim fighter

All the news of my Christianity waspublished in the said newspaper with theintention of making me ashamed andconsequently they expected me to return toIslam But their will was different from thewill of God God had used them in such away to stir me up that I could become anactive Christian and give testimony aboutthe truth of the divinity of Jesus Christ

In that way for almost two months theevent of my conversion to Christianitybecame a topic in public discussions andthe headlines of the newspaper HarianUTAMA in Banjarmasin I got news thatbloodshed almost occurred Some of myfriends who thought the news was justslander were ready to attack the writerFortunately I soon wrote An open letter

Dear Sirs

I hereby acknowledge that it is true that Inow adhere to the Protestant Christian

religion and that I have been a convertsince 1964

The news in your newspaper has beenexciting because it described me as afigure of Islam or as a fighter for freedom

I am grateful for all the response and theappreciation that my friends have shownme although until this moment I have

never felt and never declared myself to be

a figure of Islam or a fighter for freedomIf in the past I joined in the fight as waswritten by my friends it was nothing morethan a duty of the son of our motherlandFor that reason it has become myprinciple not to ask any title of serviceeither as a Veteran or a Pioneer forIndependence I have only done my duty

83 The Beginning of my ActiveTestimony-giving Christian Life

After the publication of the Open Letterabove many letters came from my friendsin Banjarmasin and Hulu Sungai all with atone of regret accompanied with adviceand warning from Quranic verses Therewere also some letters asking for theevents that had led me to my conversion toChrist






These were the initial reasons for me to

rise up and give my witness clearly Atfirst I replied with a typewriter to eachletter personally These letters developedinto an explanation about the notes of faith in stencil It became more developedso that I had to publish an essay aboutGOD JESUS AND THE HOLYGHOST which was printed with ahandpress The next publicationCHRISTOLOGY AND THEDOCTRINE OF GODS ONENESS was

completed in 1973 Consequently moreletters in the form of questions andsympathy were received and there werealso some in the form of discussion in thesearch for truth

Moreover there were several Islamicmagazines published in Java attacking myfaith Because of those articles more andmore letters came to me The letters Ireceived came from all parts of Indonesiafrom Banjarmasin and the Muslim areas in

West Java Central Java and East Java andalso from Sumatra (Palembang MedanPadang Aceh) Some even came fromabroad (Egypt and Malaysia)

It was the guidance of God that I had tostand up and give my witness naturally

Some of those contacts lasted for morethan six months Various problems aboutChristianity were discussed Some answersand questions I have compiled into books

and published as a documentation of truth

Up to 1979 I had replied to thousands of letters from brothers with a Muslimbackground from all parts of IndonesiaEvery day the incoming letters encouragedme They indicated that the writers werelooking for truth and that they feltsatisfied after I gave them explanationsPraise God There were even some whovisited me personally

As I saw how much attention was paid tomy conversion and the search for truth Iarranged special times for visitors forconsultation about the Christian faith andtruth every Tuesday Thursday and

Saturday from morning until eveningPraise God for all these He has used me asa go-between to explain the truth of theBible and the divinity of Jesus Christespecially to my Muslim brothers in orderthat they could understand Christ properly

Out of this answering questions andrejections I felt that the recent






misunderstanding and misinterpretation of

the Bible and the divinity of Jesus Christshould soon be corrected by showing thetruth clearly

84 Starting Outside Service

Since 1973 up to February 1978 I gavemy testimony only from my desk byreplying to letters questioning ChristianityI published the answers to these letters as adocumentation of the truth

But in February 1978 I prayed Oh Godplease give this movement a new field asmy field of correspondence has almostbeen deserted Praying thus I directly gotan answer in my heart that the next day Ishould go out of my house and from thereI would find the new field

Early next morning I went out of myhouse without knowing which way Ishould go When I came to the main street

I asked God that he would direct my stepsthe way I should go My soul told me thatI had to go to the north As I did not knowthe direction precisely I went on walkingI did not take any vehicle or a bus When Iarrived at the front office of the BibleInstitute of Indonesia the Lord told me toenter the office I was full of doubt as I didnot know any one well There once hadbeen Rev B Probowinoto but he hadbeen removed to Salatiga Hence if Ientered the office to whom could I speakand what should I say But as my soulpressed me to go on I entered the office

One of the friends who saw me coming inrecognized me and immediately addressedme Mr Ambrie Praise God whatguidance Someone wants to meet youSoon we were able to talk Later I metRev MK Tjakraatmadja who had heard

about me and wanted to meet me too I

was blessed from this conversation Theywanted to buy some of my books

I wondered if this was the new field anddecided that it was not I wanted to gohome but my soul urged me to continuemy walk further to the north I kept onwalking until I stood in front of Kramat VMy soul told me to go in and to meet RevDr Ais MO Pormes I wondered how Icould possibly talk with Rev Pormes as Ihad not known him well and we did notbelong to his organisation We had meteach other but that was three years agoBut as the Spirit spoke to me I turnedtowards Kramat V Before I entered thehouse I was in doubt Previously thishouse was full of Gods servants but nowit was rather quiet Probably Rev Pormeshad moved However Rev Pormes hadseen me for he came to welcome me at thefront door and said Hello Mr AmbrieIndeed since yesterday I have thought of

you and wanted to see you as there issomething I want to discuss with you Iwas expecting you -- perhaps we couldwork together I was rather astonishedHow could Rev Ais Pormes rememberme We never had becomewell-acquainted But I remembered myprayer the day before Possibly the Spirithad led me to enter the new field here

There were many things that refreshed myheart and feelings in this talk Rev AisPormes expected me to work together withhim in the service of God Also he took care of my health which at that time wasnot good

Finally Rev Pormes asked me to take hisletter to MK Sinaga the Director of BumiAsih at Solo Street 4 I took the letter andhanded it personally From KM Singas

Indonesia on Friday morning as he saidseveral preachers wanted to get to knowme

On Friday morning February 24 1978 Iwent to Hotel Indonesia to a prayer groupmeeting held by the ChristianBusinessmen of Jakarta which was knownas CBMC

It seemed from the introduction that someof these people had known my name and

wanted to meet me personally on that dayFrom that time on I was invited to serve inmany home meetings which developedinto a cooperation in church services I hadto give my testimony in many churchesaround Jakarta and Bandung Until now Ihave served outside Jakarta too visitingSouth Kalimantan (BanjarmasinAmuntai) and Central Kalimantan(Palangkaraya) East Java (Surabaya andMalang) Bandung and others

This was my new field I will continue toserve in it faithfully making the gospel of Christ known through all sorts of meetingsand altars

Although now I have got a new field in theform of services outside my home thecorrespondance has never stopped and iteven multiplies Praise God The lettersare a blessing to me and I can serve manyinquirers joyfully

85 The Lord Increased my ServicesGreatly

On May 13 1979 with a written invitationI was asked to deliver a lecture inDarussalam Mosque Batanghari StreetJakarta in front of a group of Muslimyouth who had joined in the Lembaga

Pengajian Islam Al-Furqan The subject of

the discussion was The Divinity of JesusChrist The chief debaters were DrsAbunyamin Roham and Sany Ardi Theattendance was about 100 peopleconsisting of students and teachers of Islam I came to give the answers aloneThe final impression was good Themeeting was friendly and ended withhandshakes

On July 22 1979 the lecture continuedbetween me and several Islamic leadersfrom the Majelis Ulama (MuslimTheologian Council) The subject of discussion was God the Almighty -- Onein Trinity There were 10 persons listedas debaters among them Professor DrHM Rasyidi Dr Abunyamin Rohan DrTagor Dr Asmuni The moderator wasDr Marmansyah Rahman The visitorswere about 150 people consisting of Muslim leaders and teachers intelligentmen

Within two months after August 15 I wentto visit several places outside Jakarta inWest and East Java On September 1 I leda Gospel Mission visit to Menado UjungPandang Tanah Toraja PalopoBalikpapan Banjarmasin and Kapuas

9 CONCLUSION

Salvation is the most important goal forevery man Salvation for himself salvationfor his family salvation for his propertyand other kinds of salvations All thesepurposes become the leading objectives inhis lifes happiness

For a religious man salvation is notlimited to this worldly life it includes thesalvation of his spirit from the influence of sin into freedom His spiritual salvation is






closely connected to love which is the

base of life in heaven

Suppose Adam and Eve had not fallen intosin men would still be living eternallyBut because of the original sin of Adamand Eve who violated the prohibition of God mankind along with Adam and Evehas been excluded from eternal life andhas fallen into a life that decays andexperiences spiritual as well as physicaldeath

This decaying life with its spiritual andphysical death is due to the sin of Adamand Eve which we inherited This takes inall men in our world including you andme

But God the Merciful and Compassionatewill not let us remain dead separated fromhim God promised to give us eternal lifewhich will be far better than the one Adamand Eve had when they were originallycreated

THE FIRST STEP

God has commanded through the prophetsa long time ago that we should repentcome back to him obey him and followhis laws in the books of Moses and theProphets (Hebrews 11a)

THE SECOND STEP

God incarnated his Word in Jesus Christwho is the The Living Word and is alsocalled the only Son of the Father(Hebrew 11b John 1114 1 John 11)

THE THIRD STEP

God leads men by his Holy Ghost theSpirit of God himself to deliver divineguidance and help many people in ourworld so that they too can obey the words

For God so loved the world that hegave his one and only Son that whoeverbelieves in him shall not perish but haveeternal life (John 316)

The second coming of Jesus Christ wasnot only told in the Bible its truth issupported and believed also by theMuslims as we can read it in the Hadith of Muhammads statements on page 33 of this book There we can read about the






second coming of Jesus as the Righteous

There are three promises which areguaranteed to Gods children

1 Eternal life in heaven and a life evenmore glorious than Adam and Eve inthe original creation In order to get theright of eternal life and heavenlysalvation men have to believe in JesusChrist become his loyal disciples andbe baptized

2 Full life spiritually physically as wellas materially in the form of blessingsfrom heaven Followers of Christ willnot lack anything but will alwaysexperience his fulness in abundance

3 The Spirit of God or the Holy Ghostwill abide forever in every one whoconfesses Christ and becomes a loyalfollower of him wherever he is untilthe end of time

For these reasons allow me to suggest toyou my dear reader

Make your decison now Decide to receivethe promised and ready salvation AcceptJesus Christ to reign in your heart so thatin your new life you will remain secureand peaceful in him Then we will livetogether with God eternally

Dont neglect this opportunity Dont waituntil tomorrow Do what you should do

today Tomorrow it may be too late Thedoor for repentance can be shut and youwill live in everlasting regret and sufferpunishment Come with your sincere heartand accept Jesus Christ as your Lord andpersonal Saviour in order to enter the doorof heavenly salvation forever and ever

1 God Speaks to Me Personally

During former days I was an activeMuslim an organizer of the

Muhammadiyah movement and a preacherof Islam In 1947 I was chosen to be theChairman of the Kalimantan MuslimCongress in Amuntai together with KHIdham Chalid In 1950-51 I became aMuslim priest in the army in Banjarmasinwith the rank of Second Lieutenant Myarticles were published in Islamicmagazines such as Mingguan Adil in Solo Mingguan Risalah Jihad in Jakarta and Mingguan Anti Komunis in Bandung I

cooperated with aggressive anti-Christiansfrom 1936 in Muara Teweh (Barito) anduntil 1962 sympathized with groups whointended to establish Islamic rule overIndonesia which would haveautomatically stood against Christians

Actually I had owned a Bible since 1936However I did not read in it to find its

truth but to search for paragraphs which

could support my standpoint as a Muslimwith an anti-Christian attitude and thus beable to attack the Christian faith moreeffectively

I was a slanderer of Jesus Christ until theage of 40 completely rejecting hisdivinity I purposely ridiculed and rejectedthe truth But the love of God was so greatthat he sought found and saved me

In 1962 while writing a copy of my

sermon for the mosque I meditated over averse of the Sura Al-Maida 568 whichsays

Say O people of the Book You will benothing unless you uphold the Torah andthe Gospel and all that is revealed to youfrom your Lord

I had read this verse a hundred times butat last God whispered to my soul that theTorah and the Gospel which arementioned in the Quran are the sameTorah and Gospel found in the Bible nowI had always thought that the Torah andGospel mentioned in the Quran no longerexisted physically and that their contents

had been summarized in the Quran I wasconvinced that the Torah and the Gospelwhich form the Bible now were false andthat the original contents had beenmisarranged forged or added to by people
