Dear Saint Catherine of Sweden Family, Saint Monica prayed for years that her son Saint Augustine would be saved. When she sought the advice of her priest, he listened as she poured out her heart of love and her intercession for this prodigal. At the conclusion, the priest said, “Go on! Leave me alone. Live as you are living. It is not possible that the son of such tears should be lost.” Motherhood is spoken of in Sacred Scripture. Saint Paul writes to Timothy of the influence of his mother and grandmother in the formation of his faith: I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day. I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears, so that I may be filled with joy, as I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you. (2 Timothy 1:3-5) Jesus speaks about those who lose family to follow HIM and participate in the Kingdom of God: Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. (Mark 10:29-30) Paul describes what has been true for many people down through time: Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too. (Romans 16:13) To our mothers, we thank you for who you are and what you mean to us. We would not be who we are and where we are if it was not for you. We haven’t always done a good job of honoring you, thanking you, appreciating you. We haven’t always loved you as you have loved us. For that we ask for your forgiveness and grace. ! Dear Saint Catherine of Sweden Family, Saint Monica prayed for years that her son Saint Augustine would be saved. When she sought the advice of

her priest, he listened as she poured out her heart of love and her intercession for this prodigal. At the conclusion,

the priest said, “Go on! Leave me alone. Live as you are living. It is not possible that the son of such tears

should be lost.” Motherhood is spoken of in Sacred Scripture. Saint Paul writes to Timothy of the influence of his mother and

grandmother in the formation of his faith: I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you

constantly in my prayers, night and day. I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears,

so that I may be filled with joy, as I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois

and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you. (2 Timothy 1:3-5)

Jesus speaks about those who lose family to follow HIM and participate in the Kingdom of God: Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or

mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive

a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers

and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. (Mark 10:29-30)

Paul describes what has been true for many people down through time: Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too. (Romans 16:13)

To our mothers, we thank you for who you are and what you mean to us. We would not be who we are and

where we are if it was not for you. We haven’t always done a good job of honoring you, thanking you,

appreciating you. We haven’t always loved you as you have loved us. For that we ask for your forgiveness and

grace. Remember, God loves you and so do we! In Christ’s love,

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

PAGE 2

In Your Charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of:

Dorothy Bellisario

May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

AS YOU SENT ME INTO THE WORLD, SO I SENT THEM INTO THE WORLD. – In the creation story we are told that God made human beings “in His image.” This

doesn’t mean that we are exact clones or identical twins of God, but rather that each of us, in light of our unique gifts and characteristics, are created to reflect the vibrant life and loving face of God to others. God’s hand in our lives doesn’t end in creating us. Throughout our lives God gives us purpose and fills us with the gifts we need to fulfill that purpose. The challenge for us is for us to know ourselves as God knows us. Through prayer and in humility we are invited to see clearly God’s will for our lives and all he has provided so that his will and our lives may be complete. God hasn’t randomly or thoughtlessly placed us in this world to create a reality for ourselves. He has sent us into the world with a specific task in mind that we might love others and build up his kingdom in the Church, making it ever more Alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org.

Please note, at the conclusion of the retreat day, we will attend the 4:00 pm Mass during which we will formally be commissioned. We ask all parishioners to include the following ChristLife intention in your prayers this week: Holy Spirit, help our Sharing Christ

participants to step out of our comfort zones as we begin to

evangelize. Provide us with the creative tools to reach

those who have fallen away from the Church in an effort to

bring them back into a personal relationship with Jesus

Christ as well as those who have never given a personal

relationship with Jesus a consideration. Amen. Thank you for helping to keep Christ’s love alive!

St. Catherine Parish is offering the opportunity for you to remember a veteran this Memorial Day weekend. We will line our walkway with American flags. Each flag will be in honor of or in memory of a loved one. (A suggested donation of $1.00 per dedication will help defray the cost of the flags.)

DISCIPLESHIP CORNER: The Eucharistic Prayer forms the climax of the liturgy, as the sacrifice we offer is made present in the Blessed Sacrament. It starts with a brief introductory exchange, ending when the people proclaim “It is right and just” to give thanks to God. The priest then begins what is called the Preface, affirming the statement of the people that “It is truly right and just” by stating: “It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks.” The preface then extends another few sentences before leading into the Sanctus. (We’ll talk about the Sanctus next week.) One interesting item in the preface is that the message and the wording can vary from week to week. It always starts the same way and ends with the exact words of the Sanctus. But what fits in between is extraordinarily variable. There are dozens of possible wordings, with multiple options for each liturgical season and specific prayers for every high feast of the Church. Each one is a statement of thanksgiving, praise, and worship to our God. But the exact nature of that prayer changes, because the situations of our lives change. The Catholic Church obviously encourages the use of prescribed prayers like the Our Father. But the Preface reminds us that we must see how God’s grace is working through our lives at any given moment and respond accordingly. Challenge: The next time you are at Mass, listen carefully to the exact words of the priest in the Preface. Think about how it connects to the day, and to your life

PRE-BAPTISM CLASS, required for parents wishing to have their children baptized,

will be held at St. Catherine’s Sunday, July 8, at 12:30 pm in Room 216. Call the Parish

Office at 412-486-6001 to register. The class at St. Richard Parish (3841 Dickey Road,

Gibsonia) will be Tuesday, June 12, at 8:00 pm in Room 4 on the lower level. To

register, call St. Richard’s Parish Office at 724-444-1971.

MUSIC NOTES: Today I would like to thank Patty Rose Hartle for her many years

of singing in the Adult Choir. Patti has officially retired from her ministry with the

choir. She has been a very dedicated member who has sung with the choir for almost

40 years! Way back in the day, she was also the parish organist here at St. Catherine

of Sweden. Thank you Patti for the many years of service that you have given to the

choir and our parish family. I would also like to wish all of our mothers a happy,

blessed and peace-filled Mother’s Day! —God Bless, Jim Skalos, Music Minister

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA: Booklet – 20 Answers: Mary. From

the cross, as his mission of redemption reached its climax, Jesus gave us Mary

to be our mother. In 20 Answers: Mary you’ll find biblical evidence for

Marian doctrine and devotion, answers to common objections to Catholic

teachings about Mary, and guidance on how to imitate Christ—which we should do in all

things—by loving and honoring his mother. Available on the kiosk in the Narthex.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS: Complaining can poison your marriage. Sure, there are

times when your spouse does something you don’t like and you should honestly share

that. Other times you may just want to vent. Occasional complaining is OK, but

repetitive or more than once a day makes you a sourpuss. It’s hard to love a sourpuss.

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION for the 2018-2019 school year is now online!

Please join us on Monday, May 21, at 6:30 pm for a CGS PARENT ORIENTATION/INFORMATION SESSION in Farmer Hall, or call Julie at 412-486-6001 x 19 for more info.

ATTENTION ALL APPALACHIA MISSIONARIES!!!

Join us next Sunday, May 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, for our next Appalachia General Meeting. We will be discussing site assignments, meeting in our groups, and (for those who haven’t done so) taking pictures for our poster. Final payments are due at the May 20 meeting. Contact Brian Duggan if you have any questions.

SAINT CATHERINE’S PRESCHOOL is accepting 2018-2019 Registrations for our 2 year, 4 year and Pre-K programs, which include Catechesis of the Good Shepard. Our 3 year program is filled, but there is a waiting list for a possible afternoon class. New this year will be our Primary Montessori-based Class Monday - Thursday, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. We also offer Lunch Bunch. The Pre-school is located in the lower level of the building, off the back parking lot, with our own secure entrance. For more information, visit http://ksperdute.wix.com/stcatherine preschool or contact Katie Sperdute at [email protected] or 412-486-6001 x 20.

Participant & Volunteer Registration Forms for our 2018 VACATION
