Broadcasting date : 4 November, 2002 RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE COMMENTARY Young football star Manni arrives to play for London Rangers.

Emma welcomes him and takes him to the match. COMMENTARY (CONT’D): Immediately Manni is excited by the atmosphere of London

Rangers and meets the club’s top striker Paul Carter. COMMENTARY (CONT’D): Some of the stewards don’t recognise Manni and throw him out

of the ground. COMMENTARY (CONT’D): Emma looks for him everywhere... EMMA Have you seen Manni? PAUL No, I haven’t. COMMENTARY ...but now Manni is lost in London. EMMA Hello? EMMA (CONT'D)Sorry, who is this? SOPHIE (WHISPERING) Who is it? EMMA(WHISPERING TO SOPHIE): It's Manni's father. (TO THE PHONE) Oh, yes, Manni has arrived safely... EMMA (CONT'D)Oh, no, you can't speak to him at the moment because... he's

not here - well, I mean, he is here in England, but he's not here, at the moment, in his room

(MANNI'S FATHER SPEAKS, EMMA REPEATS WHAT HE SAYS)

Where is he? Well, I'll just check. Sophie was with him last. (DESPERATE) Sophie, where's Manni? SOPHIE Downstairs. EMMA (INTO THE PHONE) He's downstairs. SOPHIE He's in the shower. EMMA He's downstairs, in the shower... yes, yes, he’s in the downstairs

shower.. EMMA (CONT'D) (ANSWERING A QUESTION FROM MANNI'S DAD)Oh

yes, of course there is a shower in his room. It's just that . . . EMMA (CONT'D)Look, sorry, I've got to go. Would you like to leave Manni a

message? Yes of course, I'll ask him to call you back. Thank you, bye!

SOPHIE Did he believe you? EMMA He thought I was crazy... SOPHIE Hello? Hi, Joe. Any news? (BEAT) No, there's no sign of him here either. PETER He could be anywhere... JOE Well, I don't know what to do next. PETER Wait a minute, there he is. Manni, Manni! JOE Wait, I think we've found him. PETER Manni! Sorry. I thought you were a friend of mine.

CHARLIE (TO EMMA) Is everything alright? EMMA (EVASIVE) Yes, of course. Everything's fine. CHARLIE I haven't seen Manni all evening. Isn't he with you? EMMA Er.., no... CHARLIE And the other new player... (HE CHECKS A LIST) ...Peter King, hasn't checked in yet. EMMA No? Oh, Don't worry. They both decided to go and watch the

match... CHARLIE (SUSPICIOUS) So where are they now? The match finished ages ago. EMMA They're both still at the stadium. CHARLIE Why? EMMA (STRUGGLING) They're just meeting everybody there... there's no problem. JIM Do you want a drink before you go out? PAUL I don't know. I'll see what Emma wants to do. EMMA Hi, Paul. PAUL Hi, Emma. Are you ready? EMMA Look, I'm really sorry, but I can't go out with you tonight. PAUL Why not?

EMMA (KEEPING HER VOICE DOWN, MOVING AWAY FROM CHARLIE)

Because we still haven't found Manni. Apparently, two of the stewards threw him off the grounds...

JIM Yeah, we saw them do that. EMMA What do you mean? You mean you SAW them throw him off

the ground? JIM Well, yeah, I mean, well, we saw the stewards throwing Manni

off the pitch, anyway. EMMA But you told me earlier that you hadn't seen Manni. PAUL (EASING HIS WAY OUT OF A TIGHT CORNER) Yes, darling, but at the

time we didn't know it was Manni on the pitch, did we? We thought he was some kind of hooligan.

(LOADED TO JIM) Didn't we? JIM Yeah, yeah, that's right... A hooligan. PAUL(CHARMING) Look, we couldn't see who it was on the pitch, we honestly

didn't know it was Manni. EMMA Yeah, yeah, of course. Well, look, I can't come out tonight if

Manni is still lost PAUL Look, he's a big boy. He can look after himself. (CHARMING) Forget about him for a while and come out with me instead.

We’ll have a meal, just the two of us. EMMA I can't. I've got to find him... PAUL Well, it's your loss darling... EMMA Look, I'll see you tomorrow... I promise.

PAUL (TO JIM) I guess it's just going to be you and me for drinks then, Jim... WOMAN Stop! Thief!! He's stealing my bag! MANNI No, I wasn't! WOMAN(IN) Help! POLICEWOMAN Is there a problem? WOMAN He tried to steal my bag. JOE Look, I'm getting kind of hungry so we'll stop and get something

to eat and then carry on. Alright? WOMAN ... And he was about to run off with my bag when you came

along. POLICEWOMAN (TO MANNI) So, what have you got to say for yourself? MANNI It’s a big mistake. I couldn’t find my hotel and I bumped into

this woman and she dropped her bag, okay. And then I went to pick it up. and then you came along.

WOMAN(IN) He's lying! I want him arrested! MANNI No, Please! I'm lost. I can't find my hotel. PETER There he is! JOE Oh great! He's got himself arrested! POLICEWOMAN Are you on holiday? MANNI No, I am here playing with London Rangers. Football. I just

arrived today.

MANNI (CONT'D) (DESPERATE) Please. Okay, I'm not a thief. You've got to understand.

JOE Manni? MANNI Joe! JOE Are you okay? POLICEWOMAN Do you know this man? JOE Yeah. Well, I met him today. You see, I play football for... POLICEWOMAN(IN) London Rangers? JOE Yeah. There was a mix up at the ground and Manni was thrown

out by mistake... Look, what's happened? MANNI(IN) I couldn't remember the name of the hotel! POLICEWOMAN (PERSISTING) Do you know where Manni is staying? JOE The Millhouse Hotel. MANNI Yes, that's it! WOMAN Well, maybe I made a mistake. SOPHIE Have you telephoned the police? EMMA No... SOPHIE Well, I think maybe you should. EMMA Oh, thank goodness! I'm so pleased you're OK! EMMA (CONT'D)You must be hungry. Would you like to eat in the restaurant, or

should I send some food up to your room?

MANNI No, it's okay.. I just really need to get some sleep. CHARLIE Emma? What's the matter? What's happened to Manni? EMMA (BLAGGING) Nothing. He's been out with Joe and Peter. Seeing the sights. PETER Yeah. London's very nice... JOE At night... CHARLIE (TO EMMA) I think Manni needs a good night's sleep. Don't you? JOE I'll show you to your room. MANNI Okay. Thanks Joe. (TO ALL) Good night. PETER Good night. MANNI Yes? RECORDED VOICE Good morning! This is your seven am wake-up call. Good

morning! This is your seven am… EMMA (O.S.) Hi! EMMA (CONT'D)You're looking very smart! PETER (HUMOROUS) You're a bit over-dressed for training! EMMA He'll be fine. Are you OK? You had a really bad experience last

night. MANNI Forget it. I'm just a bit tired, that's all...

EMMA (CONCERNED) Yeah, you look tired. Would you like some coffee? It might help

wake you up. MANNI Thanks, that would be great. EMMA Okay, I'll get some for you. PETER What's wrong with you? You look really down. MANNI I'm feeling really nervous. PETER About training? I can't wait! JOE Hi, Manni! JOE (CONT'D) Did you sleep OK? MANNI Could have slept for days. JOE Yeah, I bet. It’s a long flight. Listen, I'm driving into the club,

can I give you a lift? MANNI That'd be great. Thanks. JOE Yeah, at least that way if I drive you, you won't get lost a second

time. PETER (CHEEKY) What's the name of this hotel again? MANNI(GRINS, KNOWS HE'S BEING WOUND UP) It's called The Millhouse. PETER Just checking! CHARLIE You know we need this contract with London Rangers. If Alex

Carter finds out what happened with Manni last night... EMMA Don't you think I know that? Look, it really wasn't my fault. CHARLIE Whose job is it to look after Manni?

EMMA Mine... CHARLIE ...And who was responsible for meeting Peter from the railway

station? EMMA OK, I admit I forgot to meet Peter... CHARLIE So who's responsible for all this? CHARLIE (CONT'D) I'm sorry to put so much pressure on you, Emma, but I need

you to be good at your job. The money from the football club is very important to the hotel. Do you understand what I'm talking about?

EMMA You're right. I'm sorry. Yesterday was a disaster... CHARLIE OK. Well, just don't let it happen again, okay? JOE So, still nervous? MANNI Very. JOE You'll be fine once you get on the pitch. Come on. EMMA It's Manni's birthday today! CHARLIE(CONCENTRATING ON SOMETHING ELSE) Is it? EMMA Why didn't he tell us? We should do something for him. CHARLIE To make up for last night, you mean? EMMA Yeah. We could get him a birthday cake, or throw him a party or

something. CHARLIE Yes, it'd be nice to make him feel more at home. CHARLIE (CONT'D) (SARCASTIC) And perhaps we could pay for it out of your

wages.

JOE You can have those two pegs there, yeah. PAUL (TO THE ROOM) Say, lads! What about this! Nice jacket! ALEX Good morning Gentlemen. Just in case you haven't all been

introduced yet: this is Manni and this is Peter; they’re joining the club on a month's trial. I hope that they'll become professionals with London Rangers - and I also hope that you will all do what you can to make them feel at home.

ANDY On the pitch boys. ALEX Come on, you two! I want you out on the pitch, now. ALEX Let's do some passing. Working in pairs! ANDY Alright lads, get in twos. Sharpish! MANNI What is Sophie doing? PETER I don't know. JOE She's assessing your level of fitness. MANNI Is she good? JOE Yeah, she's got a qualification in sports science and an olympic

medal! MANNI Wow! Is she your girlfriend? JOE(LAUGHS) No, no! We're just old friends! MANNI Okay.

JOE We went to college together in America. ALEX Come on lads, a bit more effort! MANNI I'm exhausted!! PETER Yeah, me too! CHARLIE So what's all this then? EMMA It’s a birthday cake for Manni. CHARLIE You're going to a lot of trouble for this new footballer aren't

you? EMMA Well, it's my job to make him feel welcome. Besides, I thought

somebody ought to do something to help Manni celebrate his birthday.

CHARLIE Very nice. EMMA Keep your fingers off the cake! CHARLIE (JOKEY) Sorry! I only hope you look after me as well when my birthday

comes around! EMMA (SARCASTIC) Yes, but you're not exactly eighteen are you?! ALEX Alright lads, that'll do. Get in to those showers! ALEX (CONT'D) Not you two. ALEX (CONT'D) Right. You've done OK today, but you're not used to our way

of playing. You're not fit enough, or fast enough for our game yet . That's why I want you to train with the youth team, for the time being.

MANNI The youth team?

ALEX Don't worry. You haven't done badly. It's what I expected. I just wanted to see you play with the first team to begin with, just to see.

ALEX (CONT'D) And, by the way, in my team the new players help out with all

the jobs. ALEX (CONT'D) I want you to clear up all of these cones. You can have your

showers when you've finished! MANNI But that is.ridiculous. ALEX (IN/PERSISTENT) Are you deaf or something? Move it! PAUL Linger? Jim? Okay, after lunch we go to the snooker club. And

I'll beat you all. JOE Hey, are you two OK? MANNI Not really. I, I didn't play very well this morning and the

manager has asked us to train with the youth team. JOE You did okay! It was your first time. You've got nothing to

worry about, Manni, really!! PAUL Very nice jacket, Manni. PAUL (CONT'D) We wouldn't want it to get wet, would we? MANNI What are you going to do with it? PAUL Isn't that a bit of dirt on it? I think it needs cleaning! PAUL (CONT'D) What do you think lads? ALEX Manni? Peter? ALEX (CONT'D) Sophie is going to be looking closely at you both over the next

month, so you'll be working a lot with her, okay?

JIM Be careful lads, she looks okay but she's really tough. ALEX(TO MANNI AND PETER) Thank you, Jim. Get into those showers. SOPHIE Here is a list of the food I want you to eat. I'll be watching your

running and weight training, but not until later once you have had chance to settle in. Get as much rest as possible! No late nights. OK?

MANNI So much to understand! EMMA And tonight we're going to have a party for Manni, to celebrate

his birthday. OK? MANNI(FEELING UNNERVED) What are they doing? PETER I don't know. EMMA Peter! ALEX Paul, could you come to my office for a minute? PAUL Yes, sure. EMMA Happy birthday, Manni. MANNI Thank you, thank you very much! MANNI Thanks!

SOPHIE The only problem is - you're not allowed to eat too much of this cake, OK!

EMMA And we're going to have a party tonight to celebrate your

birthday! Blow out the candles then! ALEX I'd like you to look after Manni for me, help him, make sure he's

happy. PAUL (SURPRISED) OK, I will if you want. Why do you want me to do it? ALEX You saw him in training this morning. I think Manni could be

really good. PAUL(HE DIDN'T) Yeah? ALEX I'm very excited by him. I think he could be great for the club, if

we look after him properly. He obviously needs building up physically, but he’s got great footwork.

PAUL I didn't see anything that special. ALEX If he develops the way I hope, then you and he could become

the 2 main strikers in the team. PAUL (INCREDULOUS) Really? ALEX (IRONIC) Yes, Paul. I mean it. Maybe he could even take your place one

day! PAUL You what? ALEX So will you look after him for me? PAUL Yeah, sure. Of course I will. ALEX And, son: when are you going to come over to the house again -

your mother hasn't seen you for ages.

PAUL I’m sorry, I've just been really busy. ALEX Why not come over for supper tonight, then? PAUL I don't think I can come tonight - Manni is having a party. ALEX A party? PAUL Yeah. All the players are invited. But if I can, I'll try and pop

round to the house, OK? EMMA Hi! MANNI Thanks again for the cake and the card. How did you know it

was my birthday? EMMA From your passport. Come in, if you like. EMMA Are you feeling better? I'm really sorry about last night. MANNI No, forget it. I feel stupid because I couldn't even remember the

name of the hotel. MANNI (CONT'D) What are these? EMMA Oh, they’re just shirts that I make. I love making clothes. MANNI They're great! EMMA Do you think so? I'm not so sure - but I love making them,

choosing the materials, the colours, thinking up new designs. Look.

MANNI So, this your.., (REMEMBERING THE WORD AGAIN) ..hobby? EMMA Yeah. I earn money from working in the hotel and that pays for

my design course, but I'd love to be a fashion designer. MANNI I think you could! This one’s lovely!

EMMA You can have it if you like! As a birthday present. MANNI No, really. I couldn't possibly . . . EMMA Please do, if you really like it. EMMA (CONT'D)You could wear it to the party. MANNI(ENTHUSED) That's a great idea! OK. SOPHIE So, how do you usually spend your birthdays Manni? MANNI Well I usually go out with friends, dancing, you know. SOPHIE Do you have a girlfriend back home? MANNI Yes, I do. Lucia. SOPHIE She's gorgeous. EMMA Is that Lucia? MANNI Yes. Listen, thank you for organising the party. It's fantastic. It's

made me feel really at home. EMMA Good. MANNI But maybe I should go. I don't want to be tired for training

tomorrow, you know. PETER No, nor do I. We should go. PAUL No way. It's your birthday. You've got to enjoy yourself. Come

and have a dance. EMMA Come on. Come on. MANNI Okay. PETER It's getting late.

PAUL Sorry to stop all the fun, but I just want to say that the reason we

are here tonight is to wish Manni a very happy eight eenth birthday.

PAUL (CONT'D) And to wish him all the best of luck while he's with us here at

London Rangers. PAUL (CONT'D) Over the next few weeks, we'll get a chance to see how good you

really are and we all hope you make it as part of the team. Now, maybe Manni would like to say a few words?

MANNI Erm. I don't know if I will be a good footballer, but… PAUL Course you will mate! MANNI Well. Thank you. PAUL Let's hear it for Manni! MANNI And thank you for the party. PAUL Hey, no problem.
