GEOGRAPHIC POSITIONArmenia (officially the Republic of Armenia) is a country in the South Caucasus. It is situated to the north of Western Asia and northeast of the Armenian Highland, with no access to the sea. The country shares its borders with Azerbaijan in the east, Iran in the south, Turkey in the west and Georgia in the north. Total area of the republic is 29,743 square kilometers.

WEATHER AND CLIMATEThe climate is continental and dry. Average June temperature in submountain areas ranges from +24°C to +26°C, +5°C in January, the level of precipitations is 200–400 mm per year; in mountain regions average temperature fluctuates between +18°C to 20°C, in January – from +2°C to +14°C. Over 90% of Armenia land is located at altitudes over 1000 meters above sea level.

CUISINELarge part of Armenian heritage is, of course, its cuisine. Armenian cuisine consists of greens, cheese, vegetables, meat and, of course, lavash! Since the dawn of time Armenians eat “matsoon” fermented milk product and its cold water mixed version “tahn”, various pickled vegetables and herbs, “chechil” string cheese and “zhazhik” soft cheese with herbs and green garlic. Meat dishes are treated with great respect — shashlik made of large “khorovats” meat lumps, meat balls made of specifically chopped and boiled meat — “kiufta”, famous “dolma”, various plaws — with pomegranate (“nrov plaw”) or dried fruit (“chrov plaw”).

Soups take important place on the table —“spas” matsoon soup and famous soup “khash”, beef and dried apricot soup “yayni” and others. Soups are usually served with boiled meat, greens and, certainly, lavash.

Local sweets and pastries are decent as well — traditional flatbread made of rolled-in dough with “gata” (katah) filling, home-made halva, peaches stuffed with various kinds of nuts, numerous pastries with nuts and fruit jams, cakes and large diversity of marmalades. The national alcoholic drink of the country is brandy.

From the earliest times, Armenian people mastered the art winemaking. Armenian mulberry vodka is considered health-giving drink with magnificent taste. Among the soft drinks the most known is, certainly, “tarkhun”. Excellent mineral waters and fruit juices are also quite popular. Coffee and tea found at every corner are of highest quality.

In Armenia one of the most popular sightseeing attractions is a historical and architectural complex of Garni. The complex includes a real heathen temple which was built in the I century BC. It is a spectacular building which is situated on the high mountain in the Azat River Valley near the village of the same name – Garni, 28 km away from Yerevan.

The Temple of Garni is the only surviving monument of the Hellenistic period on the territory of Armenia. It is believed to be dedicated to the heathen Deity of the Sun – Mithra.

Today the Garni Complex consists of the ruins of an old castle with fortress walls, a miraculous heathen Temple of Mithra, the remains of the palace and typical Roman baths with a mosaic floor. Recently the historical Reservation of Garni has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Geghard is a monastery complex. It is a unique architectural structure which is situated in a gorge of the Mountain River of Azat. The full name of the complex is Geghardavank which means “ The Monastery of the Spear”, originates from the Longinus spear which had pierced Jesus at the Crucifixion, allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Thaddeus and stored among many other relics. Now it is displayed in the Etchmiadzin treasury.

Geghard is one of the most frequented tourist destinations in Armenia and is included together with the Azat River gorge in the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing.

GEGHARD


An ancient town of Etchmiadzin is a spiritual, historical and administrative centre of an Armenian apostolic church. It is the very place where the Christianity was adopted in 301 AD.

Today Etchmiadzin is a place where the most important temple of an Armenian Orthodoxy is situated – the Cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church which was found by Saint Gregory on the former place of worship of heathen deities. Besides, there is a Residency of the supreme head of Armenian Church Catholicos.

The Monument to the Armenian Alphabet and to its creator is located on the slopes of Aragats Mountain: 39 letters cut out of tuff together with their creator Mesrop Mashtots and his followers.

The letters of the Armenian alphabet are by themselves an integral factor of the national dignity and identity; they are often used as decorative elements and put in line with such sacral symbols of the nation as the flag and the coat of arms.

Near the town of Sisian there is a prehistoric monument called Carahunge (Zorats Karer). It is basically hundreds of huge vertical stones with reach-through holes in their upper part.

This area is surrounded by high mountains and stirs the imaginations. About 300 vertical blocks of stone are installed on the area of 7 hectares in a circle. Some of them are over 2 meters tall.

Goshavank is masterpiece of the ancient Armenian architecture. The monastery is located in the dense oak forests of a picturesque district of Dilijan, in the Gosh village. Goshavank is lack of exterior walls and is surrounded by rapid mountain rivers and rural houses. It has only the peasants’ houses around with some of them at a great distance. Nevertheless, the gorgeous landscape makes this place one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Goris is located in the valley of the River Vararak in the mountainous basin surrounded by rocks. These rocks are well known as the Stone Forest of Goris. The entire labyrinth of stone pyramids, pillars, columns and tops is the intricate result of erosion processes which have been working on volcanic tuff lying here for thousands of years.

In the town you can visit the house museum of Aksel Bakunets, the poet, also the ethnographic and archaeological museum, the melik house, the Seven Springs monument. This city deserves being named the second largest after Yerevan in terms of its size and infrastructure. Gyumri is located a mere 126 km away from the capital of Armenia. Yet, the difference is that in Gyumri you will never find that big-city buzz and crowds of tourists coming to Armenia from all over the world.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONThe Republic of Georgia is a state in the central and western parts of the Transcaucasia between the ranges of the Greater Caucasian Mountains in the north and the Lesser Caucasian Mountains in the south. It borders with Russia in the north, Azerbaijan in the east, and Armenia and Turkey in the south. In the west it is washed by the Black Sea.

POPULATION AND RELIGIONGeorgia is a multinational country. Its principal population (about 70%) is Georgian. The overwhelming majority of Georgian population is orthodox Christians. Some Abkhazians as well as Georgians from southern and south-western regions belong to the confession of Sunni Islam.

WEATHER AND CLIMATEGeorgian climate directly depends on the region. In the east of Georgia the climate changes from the moderate to subtropical climate, and in the west of the country it is subtropical. Mountains greatly influence the climate, but heated airs masses from the Black Sea reach the most remote regions of Georgia. The summer all over Georgia is hot and slack (often starting from June), and in Tbilisi the temperature can go up to 35-40°C Maximum sediments are in autumn and winter. In the mountains it is mainly snowy, and the snow does not melt until April.

Tour to the wine vault of Khareba, Region of Kakheti. Visit to the vineyard belonging to the wine-making company, participation in collecting grapes and making Georgian wine. This process is called Rtveli.

Abanotubani is a block in the centre of Tbilisi which is famous for its complex of baths located on natural sulphur springs. Present-day baths built in different periods of the XVII-XIX centuries make a separate quarter of the city which is a popular place.

Tbilisi baths are an integral element of Georgian culture and traditions. Sulphur baths are spacious basement premises with the stone dome with windows on top. In baths themselves there is twilight which makes them especially and authentically charming. Sun rays fall down, marble glitters with incredible beauty. In such baths you can not only sweat, but also relax in the pool with useful water (pools are filled with hot and cold water). Also, massage services are offered to visitors. After the massage session you feel as if you have just been born. Today baths function as hydropathical establishments which keep astonishing their visitors.

Hotel “Kopala” is situated in one of the oldest quarters of Tbilisi, in city centre. Ancient fortresses and other historical sights surround it. There are a lot of ancient orthodox churches in Old Tbilisi, near the hotel, next to them are located both mosque and a synagogue. DAY 1

Walking tour around the historical part of Tbilisi: visit to the Metekhi Temple. Cable way to the Narikala Fortress, Rike Park and Bridge of Peace. Tour around Tbilisi sulphur baths. Visit to the Sioni Cathedral, which is historically the principal cathedral of Tbilisi. Tour by car along the main avenue of the city, Rustaveli Avenue, and Svobody Square. Rustaveli Avenue: national museum, parliament building, palace of the Caucasian governor, Aleksandrovskiy Park, Kashveti Temple. Holy Mtatsminda Mount, rise by cable railway. Ride along Mardzhanishivili Avenue.

DAY2Trip to the ancient capital city of Georgia, City of Mtskheta. Tour around the Dzhvari Monastery. Examination of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Leaving the City of Mtskheta, a ride along the Military Georgian Road. On the way visit to the architectural complex of Ananuri erected in the XVI-XVII centuries. Lunch in the restaurant and return to Tbilisi.

DAY 3

Trip to the historical region of Kakheti which is well-known by its traditional wine-making. Visit to the Bodbe Monastery where Saint Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia is buried. Arrival in Signagi. Walk around the town. The town overlooks the amazing Alazani Valley and Caucasus Mountain Range. Wine sampling in the family wine vault. Return to Tbilisi. Farewell dinner in the Georgian restaurant.

AROUND GEORGIA

Tour to the ancient capital of Georgia, City of Mtskheta which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage and symbolises Christianity in Georgia. Visit to the Dzhvari Church which overlooks the amazing panoramic view of confluence of two magnificent rivers: Aragvi and Kura. Dzhvari is the first Georgian site of the World Heritage. After Mtskheta you’ll make an amazing trip to the picturesque region of Pshavi , which is located at the southern foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range along the Military Georgian Road. Here you’ll do rafting down the Aragvi River from the Village of Magaroskari, route distance: 15km. And after rafting you’ll have an outdoor picnic with shashlyk .

RAFTING FOR REAL ACTIVE REST LOVERS


Welcome to the Uplistsikhe cave town! It is one of the first towns at the territory of Georgia.

You will take part in the exciting quest around one of the most important sites of Georgian culture.

On the way to this ancient town you will see the ancient capital of Georgia, City of Mtskheta, Dzhvari and Svetitskhoveli Cathedrals. The quest starts with “searching for the treasure”. In order to find the treasure participants will have to be resourceful, attentive and to cooperate.

One of the key and theme tasks of the quest is participation in the traditional Georgian fighting contest khridoli.

UPLISTSIKHE LEGENDSQUEST HOLIDAY


Trip to the high-mountain region of Mtiuleti along the Military Georgian Road to the small town of Stepantsminda (ex-Kazbegi) located at the food of Kazbek Mount.

Arrival in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). Ascent to the Holy Trinity Church in Gergeti which one of the temples located most high in the mountains. The landscape with the church towering on the mountain against the backgrounds of one of the highest world mountains, Mkinvartsveli (Kazbek), is mesmerising. You will find yourself in the warm and merry atmosphere of the Georgian feast, get to know Georgian culinary secrets and have lunch in the cosy family environments, enjoying songs and national dances.

At the end of October 2014 Go2Armenia with Mediacrat Company successfully held a Congress "Mysteries of Armenia" for Opel, a leading German manufacturer of automobiles, part of the concern General Motors. It was attended by 45 representatives of the company and Opel dealers from different cities of Russia. They all visited Armenia for the first time, discovering a new country and having many pleasant experiences.
