so connected I’m very happy and excited to say that the Catholic Union of Texas, the KJT, is also staying connected! We have recently updated our web site www.kjtnet.org as well as launched our own Facebook page (don’t forget to “Like” us). We will soon be on Twitter (tweet tweet) and will continue to look for ways to stay connected with our officers, members and prospective members.

Once upon a time I would have used the word “innovative” in the paragraphs above. Well, when innovation becomes the norm then it’s not new any longer. Our parents used the slogan, “Connected at the hip” while in today’s world being “Connected at the palm” hits much closer to home. Makes you wonder, what’s next!

Ode To The KJT

The Catholic Union of Texas, the KJT, is here to stay – no doubt

125 years of faith, protection and strength has proved its clout

Times of depression and disasters only fue led i t s protection

And expanding to accept women and any good Christian was a wise acceptance

MESSAGE FROM THE STATE ATTORNEY

Motor Vehicle Tax . . .

PHILIP J. HUNDLKJT State Attorney

Qu e s t i o n : M y g r a n d m o t h e r recent ly passed away and I found out that she left me

her automobile in her will. I have been told that I could owe motor vehicle tax to the State of Texas when I receive the vehicle. Is this true, and if so, is there a way to avoid the tax?

Generally, when a used motor

vehicle is transferred between individuals or entities (other than licensed dealers) for some

form of consideration, motor vehicle tax is owed to the State of Texas in connection with the transfer. In most cases, the tax will be 6.25% of the standard presumptive value (SPV) of the vehicle or the sales price, whichever is higher.

The standard presumptive value is determined by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles based on certain publications by nationally recognized motor vehicle value guide services. However, there are various exceptions to the general rule,

and inheriting a vehicle is one of them.

An unencumbered inherited motor vehicle – that is, a motor vehicle that is not subject to any outstanding lien – is treated as a gift, and is subject only to a $10 gift tax.

However, if you were to assume a lien on the vehicle or give some other form of consideration to your grandmother’s estate in exchange for the vehicle, the SPV may apply and motor vehicle tax would be due.

Keep in mind that, should you decide to transfer the vehicle to another individual or entity on a subsequent date, the buyer would be subject to the general rule and 6.25% tax, unless the

transaction falls into some other exception.

Th e S c h u l e n b u r g Society #129’s 2nd Annual Turkey Shoot Challenge turn out was a tremendous

success with seven teams competing for “Bragging Rights as Best Shooters.” The Home Office Hoodlums led by State Vice President David Wagner arrived early with their sails full of hot air as they strutted

around the grounds going as far as asking that trophies be

awarded to their team before the event started.

After the first five rounds

of the shoot, the Home Office Hoodlums were on target holding the lead over the other

Then after 10 rounds it really warmed up as Hoodlums fell back by two points as team Hostyn KJT Society #3 Outlaws led by Helen Kruppa and team St. Augustine Schulenburg Society #129 Mishmash led by Anthony Prihoda tied for the lead.

The 15 rounds resu l t s tabulated a second place finish for the Home Office Hoodlums as Team Hostyn Society #3 Outlaws finished strong by strengthening their lead to seven points for first place finish taking the Team Trophy and individual team member’s trophies.

The final tallies for the teams were as follows:

Whether floating in a tube or lounging on deck, the evening Dream Pool concert was the perfect way to chill on a hot evening in July.

“We won money before we even set foot in the casino!” Joke contest winners on the District IV bus trip included Sarah Vitek (first), Marie Pavelka (second), Dominic Dobias (third) and Connie Dickinson (fourth). Winners of the first ever Rebus contest were Patty Sanders and Joe Banda

‘Little Richard’ and District IV members Frances and Jim Petter had a Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On! (hands, that is) after the lively Legends In Concert show.

BY SHiRLEY POKORnEY,DISTRICT IV PRESIDENT

For 18 years District IV has organized the annual Slots of Fun Run for its members, but it just continues

to get more exciting and entertaining each year! Along with a few new personalities added into the mix of riders

this year, there were also some surprises aboard the bus and at the casino.

A new rebus word game played enroute warmed up our brains for the strategic thinking called for at those challenging table games. Of course the casino always has some new machines to entice us with their beckoning lights, clanging bells

and wacky whistles, but now when we need a break from feeding greedy slots, there are other forms of amusement as well.

Upon arrival a fabulous dream pool invited us to float, swim or simply relax and enjoy the live music of the Molly Ringwalds in their final performance before they return to Sheffield, England. Some of us chose to be fooled by the new Legends in Concert Show featuring unbelievably convincing Lady Gaga, Elvis and Little Richard impersonators. Others entered the slot tournament for a quick try at easy money.

Most of us were able to take advantage of the $5.50 Cajun buffet feast to stuff our faces (again – as if we really needed it after the entire-trip eating marathon along the way!)

But whether our individual pockets were fuller or thinner on the return ride, ALL of us returned with some fresh jokes to entertain our families and friends that were not fortunate enough to join us on this adventure. Despite the changes, one thing about this experience is a welcome and much anticipated constant – the relaxing time to visit with KJT friends, both old and new, along the way!

DON'T MISS THE MAGIC – SAIL AWAY WITH THE KJT

You Still Have Time To Hop AboardBY SHiRLEY POKORnEY,KJT KRUISE KOORDINATOR

I’ll never forget my first cruise, coincidentally this very same route. Ray had been in the Navy, and despite the fact that I could not swim and was terrified of water (much less an entire ocean of it!), he was going on a cruise for our 20th anniversary – with or without me. It was the beginning of a love affair . . . with sailing.

October’s voyage will be our tenth and if real life had not gotten in the way, there would have been twice that. For my dollar, there is not a greater vacation bargain anywhere since the price includes luxurious cabins, bountiful gourmet food, top quality entertainment, no constant packing and unpacking, and someone else does all the driving between destinations, all the cooking, and the entire cleanup as well!

Cruises ships are incredibly quiet and very smooth. You have very little perception of movement, unless you’re on deck or at a window. That’s

where you’ll find me. The ocean is so relaxing and beautiful! Here are some of my observations and pleasures:Pampered white linen

There are so many things to do, it’s impossible to list, but the point I want to make is that if you have never cruised before,

this is a great opportunity to see if it’s for you. The price is great on a new ship (the two-year-old Magic) departing out of Galveston (no airline expense) and you’ll be meeting, partying, celebrating daily Mass, winning great prizes and visiting exotic destinations – with your KJT brethren. It’s a win-win-win-win situation! Don’t get left behind on October 19 (returning October 26). Call me, Shirley Pokorney, at (512) 251-1185 for group number and booking details.

A Mass in the Czech language held in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church

The reception followed in the

new Parish Center and included a potluck dinner with plenty of Czech beer as well as wine. An improvised band of musicians: Charlie Janecek of East Bernard,

Henry Repka of Sealy, Leonard Laitkep of El Campo, Delores Petru Rivera of Katy and Bruce Brosch of Houston donated their time to provide the polka

music and share their allotted time with the Czech Singers of Houston that sang some of the “old time” Czech folksongs. Even Fr. Desmond Daniels of Chennai, India, now serving in Houston, joined the musicians. At least 170 people attended the reception. This event was organized by the Parish Vocations Committee with the support of Knights of Columbus Council 6950, Joseph M. Walla Columbian Squires Circle 2738 and the parish youth group.

I was a Roman priest who was eventually elected to succeed Pope Fabian. I proclaimed that the Church had authority to forgive lapsed Christians and could readmit them to the sacraments and the Church after they had performed proper penances. In 253, when persecutions of the Christians started up again, I was exiled by Emperor Gallus to the modern-day Italian city of Civita Vecchia where I died a martyr because of hardships I was forced to endure. Along with St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, my feast day is September 16. Who am I?
