In 2011, over 220,000 visitors stepped through our pink doors into a world-class work of art to discover a diverse programme of activities and exhibitions. All profits we make from the events and activities you support are continually used to help us deliver our exciting programme.

Our first exhibition of 2012 celebrates the architecture of the building. The Art of Architecture features a series of exciting pieces exploring how art engages with the environment around it and sees the return of The Public’s world-renowned principal architect Will Alsop, video from acclaimed filmmakers Harrison and Wood and photography by Andy Day and Rick Davies.

Continuing the architectural theme, in February, we’ll be encouraging everybody to get creative with fun family workshops and sessions to design your own structures and buildings as well as staging two great children’s theatre performances for half term.

In this edition, you’ll also find details of entertainment from comedy, dance and music as well as exciting new work with the return of our annual Touch Interactive and Screening exhibitions. You’ll find something for everybody behind those pink doors – step inside a work of art and discover the exciting world on your doorstep.

STEP iNSiDE A WORk OF ART AND TAkE ThE PuBlic TRAil

What do the pyramids, the Sydney opera house and The Public have in common? They all feature on the world’s 1001 “must see buildings” list.

Designed by renowned architect Will Alsop and Julian Flannery, the building is a fascinating, colourful, delightful and inspiring work of art in its own right – fast becoming an icon of the Black Country.

We are building a permanent collection of art work from our past exhibitions that is on display around the building. Currently we have six large prints by one of the UK’s leading photographers, Martin Parr, as well as works by local students inspired by their collaboration with artists.

Will AlSOP – ‘A BOx OF DEliGhTS’27 January – 20 MayWorld famous principal architect of The Public returns to The Public, a building he once described as ‘a Box of Delights.’ In collaboration with students from Walsall, Birmingham and Sheffield, he creates an environment designed to make us think about architecture and how it makes us feel.

Rick DAViES’ BlAck cOuNTRy STORiES27 January – 20 MayMultistory has commissioned photographer Rick Davies to document the Black Country taking panoramic images that invite us to step into, and explore, the local landscape.

PARkOuR PhOTOGRAPhy27 January – 20 MayThe first solo exhibition by British photographer Andy Day. Since 2002, Day has documented the rise of Parkour through its communities in London, France, Nicaragua and India. Parkour makes spectacular use of rolling, running and climbing as participants move through their environment.

Day’s photographic work focuses on the built environment and social interaction. Through

Parkour, he documents new ways of seeing and moving through the city. The exhibition aims to challenge our understanding of how spaces are used and offer alternative ways of looking at urban design that might otherwise be ignored or forgotten.

TWENTy-Six DRAWiNG AND FAlliNG ThiNGS – hARRiSON AND WOOD27 January – 20 MayPaul Harrison and John Wood create video works that focus on the themes of tragedy, comedy and irony. This piece features the film makers as performers in a series of simple gestures – using the human body as a tool for exploring rhythm and synergy in their surroundings and environment.

ThE FRANk cOhEN cOllEcTiON – cuRATED ShOW FROM ThE cOllEcTiON 27 January – 20 MayA show curated from Frank Cohen’s collection featuring works relating to the themes of artists and architecture. The exhibition includes work from Graham Little and architect, artist and 2011 Sterling prize winner Zaha Hadid.

MADE AT ThE PuBlic13,14 & 15 FebruaryMADE (Midlands Architecture and Designed Environment) will be hosting a series of artist-led activities exploring how we use public and social spaces. Architect and artist Catherine Grieg invites you to join in with activities happening in and around The Public.

MADE AT ThE PuBlic – ‘WhAT MAkES A GOOD PlAcE?’12-25 MarchAn exhibition of photography by housing association residents from Birmingham and the Black Country which explores the nature of the built environment and the spaces we interact with. Supported by the Skills Funding Agency, MADE is encouraging residents to get to know more about their neighbourhood and get involved in improving it.
