Themes
Redefining Regional Sustainable Food Eco-SystemsThe food industry generated more than $6 billion in revenue in King County
in 2011, demonstrating the significance of the food economy as an economic driver in the state. The key to building a holistic and resilient food system
is to integrate sustainability into all phases of the system. During the panel discussion of Mid-Day Plenary and brainstorm of Mini-Charette, the integration
strategies considered food equity for low-income families, innovative economic solutions for small farms and restaurants, education of consumers
on sustainable produce, and the support and collaboration of policy makers, research institutions and community-based organizations.
Quantifying the True Value of SustainabilityThe quality of corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments has always
been a bit unclear. Almost all businesses now are issuing CSR reports or statements to claim the contribution of the positive social impacts and the reduction of carbon footprints. To go beyond just the paper claims, companies
are going through the rigorous process of obtaining additional certifications such as B-Corp and are installing energy tracking tools to collect real time
data, to capture the true value of their social, sustainable and environmental efforts.
Change Agent Required for ImplementationNo one likes change. When a company decides to bring a new mission
into its core values, it generates a ripple effect on its business function and operations – but change has to happen. When a company integrates sustainability into its DNA, it should also plant a change agent in parallel with
its implementation plan. The key to continue engaging stakeholders and employees, and to scale up the impact of sustainable practices, requires
collaboration, innovation and communication within the company and with external government agencies and partners.
