Q: What’s the leading cause of tire failure?A: Heat is the main cause of tire failure. When the tire pressure is low in the tire, it creates more heat on the casing, which in return can cause a blowout. Also, during the summer months, again, heat is the main cause of tire failure, which is why it is so vital to maintain the correct tire pressure. When the casing in the tire gets hot, the rubber gets softer, therefore creating a higher chance you may have of a blowout. It is key to check the tire pressure often.

Q: What are some of the services that are offered by Les Schwab to help prevent tire failure?A: We offer a simple routine air check. You’re more than welcome to stop in at your convenience. There’s no wait time, no appointment necessary. It usually only takes two minutes and it doesn’t cost you any quarters…it’s free!

Q: Does Les Schwab offer more than just tires?A: Yes, we also offer brake service, alignment service, shock and strut service and batteries. We also do a multitude of front end work, suspension work, lift kits, lowering kits, custom wheels, wipers and chains.

4 GO FOR IT October 2012

When my wife Diana called me into the bathroom the other night and I saw another pool of blood all over the floor, my first thought was, “Oh no, not again!” She had just gotten out the hospital a few days earlier after a 10 day stay and major surgery, so my mind veered into the dark side before I could even asked her what happened. She quickly reassured me that it was no big deal, that her incision had opened up and we just needed a few good band aids to close the wound and stop the bleeding.

To say that Diana is one tough cookie would be like saying that Mrs. Fields makes a tasty little treat (They’re so delicious, they should be against the law). When it comes to the subject of enduring pain, Diana could’ve made John Wayne and Clint Eastwood look like sissies. Anyhow, for some absurdly ridiculous reason, I went along with her scheme and tried my best to not get too grossed out by the open gash that was over two inches long, a half inch wide and disturbingly deep. She laid down on her back and calmly closed the wound with her hands while I carefully applied each band aid. A few minutes later, I finally came to my senses by insisting that we go to the hospital immediately.

When we got to the emergency room, the doctors and nurses confirmed my concerns by admitting her immediately. With the severity of the opening, the emergency staff chose to wait until morning for a qualified surgeon to examine her and come up with the best solution. I figured they would stitch her back up and send us on our way, but he chose to use a combination of seaweed and silver to draw out any potential infection. As it turned out, his solution was the right choice and Diana is healing nicely.

Emotional wounds are a lot like physical ones, except they probably won’t gross your spouse out. The small ones can usually be resolved with a simple band aid, but the complex and serious ones often require extra care. Large and deep emotional wounds likely need something different than just a band aid solution, such as prescription drugs, alcohol and repression. If left unattended, deep emotional injuries have the potential to wreak just as much internal havoc as an open physical wound. Be sure to use the same prudent care and cautious approach that the professional caregivers offered Diana and don’t be afraid to get a second, third or even fourth opinion.

On those rare occasions where I’m grappling with an unresolved issue, I choose to go to the one person I love,

trust and respect the most, which happens to be my wife. Although she’s not always going to give me the answer I want to hear, I know for certain it’s going to be honest and potentially eye opening. She has a knack for seeing the world from a completely different viewpoint and this has helped me see many things I never would have considered.

When you’re willing to share your emotional wounds with a small number of people you know, trust and respect, you open yourself up to a variety of potentially helpful insights. I would advise you to share your feelings with up to three such confidants, but no more if your real objective is to heal quickly and thoroughly. If you find yourself sharing your emotional wounds with anyone and everyone born with a set of ears, chances are your primary motive is not aimed at healing. If you’re being brutally honest with yourself, you may realize that by sharing your plight with the world, you’re actually reliving the negative experience over and over and that you’re getting more out of gaining sympathy from others while also avoiding the pain and discomfort of making new and unproven choices. Making new and potentially healthier choices may be scary at first, but it will most likely help you heal faster, be stronger and accumulate greater wisdom. Making new and healthy choices will help you move one step closer to becoming the best possible version of yourself with one less band aid to peel off, and that’s a very good thing because those suckers hurt when they’re ripped off!

Thai House RestaurantBy Bob Cox

The older I get, the more respect I have for restaurant owners. Most share an almost obsessive drive to excel that is very inspiring. As a general rule, they work longer and harder than just about everyone else in society. Vinnie Boonsom, the owner of The Thai House Restaurant in Sacramento is no exception to this rule. He knows first hand what it’s like to burn the midnight oil seven days a week.

I asked Vinnie what the biggest challenges were with owning a restaurant and his answer didn’t surprise me too much. “The biggest challenge so far has been the long days and the work hours. I don’t consider the restaurant business a very hard business; it’s just the long hours that we have to put in, working all day and all night. I often work from 8 in the morning to 11 or 12 at night, so the long hours are what makes it very difficult and what has been the most challenging aspect of the business so far.

Here’s some other questions I had for Vinnie:

Q: Why did you decide to own a restaurant instead of another type of business?

A: My mom and my family have been working in the food and restaurant industry for most of our lives. I was in the real estate business, which had a big downturn and I needed something to fall back onto. Knowing that I had a background in the restaurant

business and my mom also had this restaurant background, it was an ideal situation.

Q: Are restaurants a passion for your whole family?

A: Yes, it has been. I love the service industry and people. I think I am good at what I do and with the help of mom and her years of cooking experience; it’s turned out to be really good.

Q: I’m sure she’s got a few recipes up her sleeve that she wouldn’t want to share with anyone.

A: Definitely not (laughs). A lot of the foods we serve are our made with our recipes and we would like to keep it that way.

Q: Take us through a typical day. What’s it like through the eyes of Vinnie Boonsom?

A: Well, a typical day is getting up at 7 or 8 o clock and then going shopping for fresh produce and meats and coming back and getting everything ready for a busy day. That’s pretty much about it, just coming in and doing all the prep work and getting everything ready for a busy day.

Q: Is this really a family run business? A: Yes, it’s truly a family run business. I have my dad, my

mother, my brother and a lot of family friends and cousins that are helping us out with the business and a lot of these people have restaurant experience, so it’s been great.

Q: Are you all able to count on each other?A: Yes, is very helpful. A lot of my patrons are Americans

and they want suggestions and we are all able to explain to the customers what each item consists of. We have people in place that are knowledgeable of the food, so we can cater to our customers needs.

Q: When you see a new customer that walks through your door, do you ever ask them questions about their dining experiences?

A: Yes, I usually begin by asking if they have tried Thai food before and if they had, then I have an idea of what certain dishes they have they tried and what some of their favorite dishes are. Sometimes I ask them if they like spicy food or if

Enjoy the great taste of Thai outdoors!

they like it with mild seasoning. That’s how we suggest menu items for them to try.

Q: What do you think your customers love most about coming to Thai House Restaurant?

A: So far, I think they love the food, the service and the personalities that are here. We have been really close to the community and some of the patrons and we have actually befriended a lot of great people here the last 3 years.

Q: What expectations do you have for your staff? A: I am very passionate about service and food and I want to

make sure that my customers are taken care of. We want to make sure everybody is treated accordingly – like family. A lot of my friends and patrons who come here are like family to me now. On a typical night when you come to the restaurant, you’ll notice that most of the people in the restaurant are regular customers and we know them by name and they know us by name. It’s like a family atmosphere around here.

Q: Can you tell us about the awards that you’ve won since you’ve owned The Thai House Restaurant?

A: In the last couple years we have won several awards. We have been on the KCRA List, which is hosted by KCRA News Channel 3. We have been in business since August of 2009 and that year we won the Best Thai Restaurant. The following year (2010) we came in 2nd place and then we won again in 2011. We are pretty happy that we are able to maintain our consistency and our service. Hopefully we’ll keep on being successful and win even more awards.

Q: What are some menu items that you think would be great for people to try in upcoming months as the weather starts to cool down.

A: As fall and winter approach, we do get much busier during this time of year. Some of the food items that get sold a lot more will be our soup and curry dishes. When it gets cold, people tend to eat more spicy food because it keeps them warm. I would recommend trying our Hot n Sour soup, traditional beef noodle

Chicken Egg Rolls Drunken Noodles Pad Thai Noodles Thai Papaya Salad Ice Cream Sampler

soups and our curries. Look for us to bring out seasonal dishes like our Pumpkin Curry Special which has prawns, sliced chicken breast, Asian kabocha pumpkin, basil, bell peppers and coconut milk simmered in a spicy red curry sauce. It’s delicious and very popular. My favorite dishes to recommend for first timers are our Eggplant Delight and our Traditional Spicy Basil, Pad Thai, Panang Curry and our Grilled Tri Tip steak with house made steak sauce. If you like fried rice then you will need to try our spicy basil fried rice topped with fried garlic chips.

Q: What has been the biggest joy about owning your own restaurant?

A: We have been very blessed to have the success and support of the community. We’re pretty happy that we’re here and I don’t think we are going to be going anywhere anytime soon.

HalloweenSafety Tips

1. If you are driving on Halloween, watch for children.

2. Instruct your children to travel only in fa-miliar areas along a known route.

3. Teach your children to stop only at houses or apartment buildings that are well lit.

4. Never enter a stranger’s home.

5. Review all appropriate trick-or-treat safety precautions.

6. Pin a slip of paper with your child’s name, address and phone number inside a pocket in case your child gets lost.

7. Costumes should not be too long so that they are not a tripping hazard.

8. Costumes should be made with light col-ored materials and strips of reflective tape should be added to make the children visible. Also make sure your child carries a flaslight.

9. Walk; do not run from house to house.

10. Have all treats brought home for inspec-tion before anything is eaten, and when in doubt, throw it out.

Did you know that your upper and lower teeth never touch during speech or eating? The only time your teeth ever touch is when you swallow. Give it a try. For many people, their teeth touch under tremendous force as they clench and grind their teeth during sleep.

Recently I saw a patient that had the most severe case of tooth wear I’d ever seen. He had worn down his teeth so severely that it appeared that he didn’t have any teeth at all. I see tooth wear on most of my patients, but never to this extent. This case reminds me of how crucial it is to manage tooth wear at its earliest stages.

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may be grinding your teeth during your sleep and not be aware of it:

• Uneven tooth edges• Broken or chipped teeth • Gum recession• Pain or discomfort of the muscles of the face• Frequent headaches• Pain with chewing• Sensitivity to cold• Clicking jaw

A lot of my patients believe that tooth wear is a normal part of getting older and therefore not a big deal. I usually let them know that big problems usually start really small. So, if you have one or more of the above symptoms, come in for an evaluation. Most people can be treated with a simple occlusal guard that they wear during the day or during sleep to prevent any further tooth wear. This is one dental problem that is 100% preventable.

Dynamic DentalCaring Dentistry For The Entire Family

I’ve heard about a lot of patients who’ve used over-the-counter occlusal guards and have stopped using them because they are too bulky, too loose and sometimes painful. The new occlusal guards we make at Dynamic Dental are smaller, more comfortable and custom fitted to each individual. We try to make them as comfortable as possible, so patients are able to wear them each and every night to protect their smile for a lifetime.

We are all born with creativity as part of how we ex-press ourselves. Remember finger paints and sparkle and glue? Some, like artists, musicians, performers, and in-novators nurture that spark into their vocation or avoca-tion. For some of us, we can sometimes find little time for creativity and self-expression amidst our busy lives.

However, we should and can find time for it, to explore and tinker and enjoy! Here are some ideas.

TAKE A CLASS: If there is something that always has interested you, find a class or club. My great-aunt turned 100 in March. She started paint-ing in her mid-60’s. She has since exhibited in galleries, gone on painting trips and created block prints and pine-needle baskets. I believe her inter-ests have kept her interested in life... Start today!

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT-BRAIN: This is your creative side, the in-novator. I enjoy taking Zumba and U-Jam classes because I can dance and exercise at the same time. During Halloween, dress up! It is the time of year when our society encourages raising awareness about lowering self-consciousness.

BRAINSTORM: Napolean Hill called this Masterminding. His advice was to associate with like-minded people to gain momentum and help pro-pel each other to your individual goals. Two heads are better than one!

Ray Bradbury (a favorite author) said: “Don’t think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.”

Car Tech TalkHow Much a Customer Should Be Told?

Easy answer, everything… of course this isn’t the entire article because I am writing it AND I have space to fill. Why is this even a question? Isn’t it common sense to tell them everything and as soon as possible? For starters, we are human beings and I hope, have some empathy for our

fellow man. I think all too often people are told what they want to hear in order to make them feel better. This is only a short term feel good as the rest of the news or information will bubble up eventually leading to even harder feelings. The other reason I see this is that we decide what is important to tell the customer, and in a way influence their decisions by doing so; I feel this is equally as wrong.

Often we judge a book by its cover and make decisions based on what the customer is wearing or what the car looks like. “Well he/she isn’t dressed well, so we’ll just tell them about the big stuff.” Or “Wow this car is trashed and dirty, so we’ll only repair what it came in for and not inspect the car.” I have seen this happen and I’ve done it myself VERY early on in my career. However I put myself in the customer’s shoes and changed my way of thinking. If I were you, how much would I want to know? EVERYTHING…

I do hear this a lot from customers, “I don’t go to ABC Repair because every time I go in, there’s something new wrong with my car.” While the person doesn’t necessarily think that the shop is creating the problem, they don’t trust them either and they end up at Valley Motorwerks. What I try to explain is that they (ABC Repair) most likely didn’t just tell them up front all

that was wrong to begin with. For whatever reason, they don’t want the person to stalk out upset; they think

that this person cannot afford it all at once etc. It is wrong, dead wrong and here’s why.

I feel that a car should NEVER leave a shop unless the customer has been made aware of EVERYTHING that is wrong with it and its impact to the cars safety and longevity. An informed customer is an empowered customer; after all information is power. Regardless of

the cars condition or the appearance of the customer, they have a RIGHT to know. Once we

are aware of a situation, we can help the customer decide what to repair first and what can wait, what

should be repaired together to save money in the long run.In the end, you’ve established a great long lasting

partnership with your customer and gained their trust. Remember, honesty is the best policy, so tell the customer everything and in a timely manner.

As a child of the 60’s and 70’s, the options to hear my favorite music were very limited. Either I turned on the radio and hoped to hear the songs I loved most or I’d save up my dollar a week allowance and make an investment in vinyl bliss. Sadly, on more than one occasion, my listening pleasure ended on a sour note whenever someone or something bumped into the record player, which would cause an awful screeching sound from the needle as it skipped along the surface of the record.

Today, if we want to listen to our favorite songs, the options seem almost endless. We have music practically everywhere we turn, including the T.V., satellite radio, computers, smart phones and other hand held gadgets along with the good old radio. I’ve known about these other options for awhile, but I let my old habits go on. I never really took the time to realize how much great music I was missing out on.

As good fortune would have it, I received a phone call last month from Rex McNeill, a local D.J. for over 25 years that goes by the name of Tee Rex. Rex introduced me to the idea of tuning in to a fantastic selection of music that’s now being played on the internet by a local company here in Sacramento that goes by the name of 1musicnetwork.com. Best of all fellow cheap-skates…it’s all free!

I met the other day with Rex, along with C.E.O. Don Alias and Operations Manager James “Akil” Jennings to learn more about this amazing new music company.

Q: What is 1musicnetwork.com? A: First and foremost, we are a tech

company based here in Sacramento. Second of all, we are a music service; we provide music in different formats, with different genres of music on a platform that encompasses all music, events, information and social media integration.

Q: How is the audience of 1musicnetwork.com different from tradi-tional radio?

A: With (traditional) terrestrial radio, you have a 60-120 mile radius. This particular format that’s now on the website covers the entire United States and abroad. If you’re an independent artist and you submit your music, you can be heard nationally. On the 80’s station we have gotten tweets and emails and facebook messages from as far away as Argentina, England, the east coast, the Midwest and the south.

Q: What’s the best way to listen to

1musicnetwork.com while I’m in my car? A: Most cars now come with that 8 inch

jack that you can just plug your phone or computer into and then listen to our network on your car’s speakers. In some of the 2013 cars, (BMW, Ford, Mercedes, Lexus) WIFI has been made accessible if you sign up for it or buy it, which means 6 months from now, you will be able to go into your car and type up 1musicnetwork.com on your dashboard, hit enter and there we are, just like you have found a terrestrial radio station.

Editor’s notes: For more information about 1musicnetwork.com, visit their website www.1musicnetwork.com.

Q: How do people find your network to enjoy your music?

A: By typing in 1musicnetwork.com. That’s basically our gateway into everything I just talked about. They can also go to the App that carries us, Radio Loyalty and look for 1musicnetwork.com stations.

Q: How many different types of music can people find on 1musicnetwork.com?

A: We have 20 different formats, from country to hip hop to top 40 to classic 80’s. We even have a talk station.

Q: How is 1musicnetwork.com different from other internet based programs?

A: We’re a full radio station. We have personalities on each of our stations and whatever format you choose, you will hear a DJ. The old school station has Lee Perkins. The 80’s station has myself (Tee Rex), Don does a smooth jazz station... so there are a lot of musical choices but we are here to entertain and offer you a complete music experience. We also try to be interactive and we communicate with the audience and play their favorite music.

Q: Is there anything else that makes 1musicnetwork.com a unique listening experience?

A: Yes, there is one component that is not being covered by some of the big boys and that’s the local and independent artist elements which Akil covers with his home grown soul channel. He’s like the pioneer in Sacramento; bringing the home grown artists to the forefront of American consciousness in this particular region. He’s provided a platform for live entertainment, audio entertainment (he does a show on Terrestrial Radio) and he has a channel on our 1musicnetwork.com that is specifically designated for independent local artists, regional artists and artists around the country that are unsigned.
