Why do I Love Gold River Auto Repair?

Q: What’s been your overall exper-ience with Gold River Auto Repair?A: My experience with Gold River Auto has been just phenomenal! I’ve come to know Todd well. I met him a few years ago and since then, I’ve taken both my vehicles there to get serviced. I’ve been really, really happy with the service and with the personnel. I’ve gotten to know plenty of their employees, Redd for instance. I’ve gotten to know him pretty well and have been very, very happy.

Q: Do you recommend Gold River Auto Repair to others?A: Oh yeah, every chance I get. If anybody ever asks me who would I recommend in terms of auto repair, I always recommend Gold River Auto and Todd. My reputation is pretty important to me as well, so I’m only going to refer other businesses I know that do a good job, so that’s why I recommend Gold River Auto Repair!

Q: Do you have any experiences that really stand out?A: I did have a problem with my brakes one time. I was expecting to spend a lot more than I actually did. It was more of an adjustment of what needed to be done, so I was really, really happy because at the time I was a little strapped for money. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t have to spend nearly as much and since then, my brakes have held up pretty well!

Q: What do you like best about Gold River Auto Repair?A: I think it’s their customer service. Every time you go in, you see Todd, and he always greets you with a big smile and a handshake. His wife behind the counter, Stephanie, is always very pleasant. If I see Redd back there, he normally comes out to say hello as well. So, the reception there is really warm and the service is top notch.

types of prices (laughing). Todd’s a lot more reasonable and I know I get better service, so I’m really, really pleased with Gold River Auto Repair!

Q: Do you think they are pretty fair in terms of price?A: Yes, absolutely. I used to take my vehicles to the dealership all the time, so I was expecting to pay those

Once upon a time, when I was at the ripe old age of six, I had had enough of the people in my home that were not taking me seriously. In the past year, I had endured four different schools while attending first grade and was having a particularly challenging time adjusting to the other brats, I mean kids, at my newest school. So, I devised a plan to shock the one person that could help me turn my life around and get back on the road to happier times…my dad.

In those desperate times, it only seemed like yesterday when I was enjoying the carefree days of my youth at Mrs. Bee’s Preschool. When my friends and I weren’t doing arts and crafts or performing magic shows for the entertainment of our astonished and proud parents, we were pulling pranks on them with the help of Mrs. Bee’s fake poop and vomit! My favorite pastime was when all us boys would dart out the sliding glass door during recess and onto the concrete slab in her backyard to claim the speedy bike, a silvered colored spectacle that represented 10 pounds of unlimited power. The one who rode the speedy bike was more invincible than Superman, impervious to the envious taunts from those who were a step slow. Mrs. Bee was a kid’s best friend and there simply was never a dull moment at her house, even when she was sneaking a peak at her favorite daytime talk-shows during our naptime. Of course, within a matter of minutes of monotonous adult talk from Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas, it was only a matter of time before I was nodding off for real into dreamland.

Like a sawed-off Rodney Dangerfield, I could not get any respect at school or home, so I was forced to take bold and decisive action by proclaiming my independence. After another particularly agonizing day at school and then coming home to parents who appeared indifferent to my plight, I shouted at the top of my lungs, “I’ve had it with this place…I’m running away from home!” My dad appeared unfazed. “Perhaps he didn’t hear me,” I thought to myself so I made my announcement with greater emphasis on the running away from home part. “Hmm, still no tears, no begging or pleading with me to stay, no reaction at all!”

Although I had never played a hand at poker (as a matter of fact, I’d never even heard of the game at the time), I was almost certain my dad was bluffing. Calm and cool on the outside sure, but on the inside,

a quivering mass of fear and guilt over the prospects of losing his one and only son to the mean streets of South Torrance, California. So, I took the craziness up a notch by throwing my favorite clothes on top of the thin red blanket on my bed, wadded it up into a ball and slung it over my back as I gave my dad one final chance to come to his senses and beg for

my forgiveness. “This is it; I’m running away from home and never coming back!”

Finally, my dad looked up at me as if he finally got where I was coming from,

cleared his throat while breaking the tense silence and replied, “Okay, bye Bobby.” I was shocked and infuriated

by his apathy, so I clutched the red bag firmly with my right hand while reaching for the front doorknob with

my left and shouted, “That does it, I’m out of here” as I stormed out onto the

porch, down the steps and across the greenish brown lawn that barely covered our front yard. I got to the end of our street, sat on the cinderblock fence of a neighbor’s yard exactly five houses from ours and stared down the two great hills paved by Carlow Road while waiting desperately for my dad to come to me with open arms and tear filled eyes. Of course, that never happened, as the minutes dragged on like schoolwork. As the day slowly yielded to the night and my stomach began to growl in protest, my resolve collapsed faster than a house of cards under a steam roller.

Looking back, I guess my dad really paid attention to the stuff we watched on T.V., especially that one episode of the Andy Griffith Show when Opie’s friend Arnold Winkler showed off his cool new bike and taught Opie how to get everything he wanted by throwing a series of temper tantrums until his father caved in. In the short run, one might conclude that the strategy Opie and I used to trick our dads into getting what we wanted backfired big-time. But after closer inspection, Opie and I got something even better, the opportunity to respect someone who was wise enough to not be manipulated and conned by a sawed off Dangerfield!

The Details of SuccessBy Bob Cox

From 1946 (Their first year) until 1980, the San Francisco 49er’s were a struggling franchise which had won exactly zero N.F.L. Championships. From 1973-1979 they went from bad to worse, losing twice as many games as they won (33-71). Then something amazing happened. They hired a brilliant, detail oriented coach from Stanford named Bill Walsh and would go on to become the team of the 1980’s, earning four Super Bowl Championships.

Success didn’t happen immediately as it took Walsh two years to turn the team around, but once he did, there was no looking back. What was Walsh’s secret to his extraordinary success? He drafted exceptionally talented players and then taught them how to play in a revolutionary new system (West Coast Offense) that relied on precision timing and execution. His success was in the details, doing the little things, over and over, and then eventually doing them better than anyone else. Although Walsh passed away in 2007, his legacy lives on as over 30 men who trained under Walsh or his assistant coaches have gone on to become head coaches in the National Football League.

Aiman Nasrawi, the owner of Aquamarine Jewelers in Sacramento, reminds me a lot of coach Walsh. Over the years, he’s been saavy enough to hire and train fantastic people who are not only great with customers, they also have Aiman’s keen eye for the details. I cannot think of any other business where an eye for the details would be more important than the jewelry business. Fortunately for Aiman,

he has that extraordinary gift and his customers love him! Aiman got his big break early in his jewelry career, when he was

hired by a company that is famous for offering exceptional quality and service while being obsessively fanatical over the details: Nordstrom. “That was one of the greatest blessings in business that I got, being hired to be one of Nordstrom’s jewelry designer/jeweler for 7 years. This gave me great experience in several aspects of refurbishing and rebuilding vintage and heirloom jewelry. I also did lots of jewelry designing for a few large fine jewelers in Sacramento,” explained Aiman.

Q: Why is it so important to be detail oriented in your business?

A: At Nordstrom, I learned that the art is in the details. Some jewelers may think that it’s okay to sell a chipped diamond or a flawed stone, but it is really my reputation on the line. I read somewhere that if a customer has a bad experience, they will tell 10 people. If the same customer has a good experience, they will tell one person. That’s why I always have to try harder to give people the quality, attention and respect that they deserve.

Q: Family values are very important to you. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

A: My mom and my dad Hayat and George Nasrawi are the reason for my success in life. They raised us with the belief that you must appreciate what you have in life. My dad is a retired movie director in Jordan while my mom did some acting live on stage and did part time hair styling privately to a few actresses and singers.

Page 9: Go for it Magazine June 2012

June 2012 GO FOR IT 9

Q: Have those core values translated into success in your business?

A: Yes. Absolutely! Our customers trust us. So, me and my crew have lived up to their trust. Our repeat customers are our treasure. Without them, we wouldn’t be here. We appreciate every one of them. You also have to love people and treat them equally…that’s important. You can’t judge people by the way they look or talk.

Q: How’s your family doing today?A: Thank God, they are doing great. My parents currently

live in Massachusetts and I make sure that I see them often. My older brother, Alex Nasrawi, is the founder and the designer of the most luxurious, elegant Lex Diamond Watch.

Q: What was it about the United States that made you fall in love with it?

A: I was 18 when I moved to the U.S. and it was the lifestyle, the freedom and the opportunities that continually amaze me. There are so many things that make it beautiful to be here. My brother Alex helped me greatly to start my life here. He was concerned about me going back during the war that was happening in Middle East, so I told him, “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere (laughing)!” It was a fun beginning. I just try to live my life clean and simple.

Q: Where there any hardships or challenges while adapting to a whole new country and culture?

A: We studied English beginning in the first grade and I took French for six years, but the challenge was in speaking because we talked the English way (accent) and not the American way (of talking). So, we had a little bit of a hard time speaking. We felt

odd, like aliens (laughing)! That was the only challenge, I really embraced my life here and I’m so thankful.

You may remember the last time you heard that phase. It was likely in reference to someone stepping in to replace somebody who has set high standards in doing a great job.

My recent “aha moment” was that each of us were born with “big shoes to fill”. We each have unique talents, perspectives, and gifts. I think one of our goals in life is to fill those shoes. Step one is accept this “shoe challenge” and then to define and practice how to actualize what is “you” to plant your unique footprint as you walk this planet.

We’re getting metaphorical here and what triggered this was the upcoming parades in July. “Before the Parade Passes By” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” (Streisand: now there’s a woman who fills her shoes!) are great message to not only fill your shoes but strut them out...

You’ve probably heard how important it is to brush three times and floss at least once a day. What you may not know is that you shouldn’t brush immediately after you eat. Right after you eat, you are most susceptible to the acid in your mouth eating away your teeth, so you want to give your teeth a little bit of time to recover. If you brush when your PH is at it’s lowest, your toothbrush can get in there and actually harm your teeth. What you want to do is give your teeth about 10 minutes and then go ahead and brush.

Here are five more simply ways to keep your teeth whiter, brighter and in tip top shape:

Tip #1: Chew sugar free gum. After you eat, the bacteria in your mouth produces acid, which lowers the PH in your mouth and destroys your teeth. Chewing gum stimulates saliva, which has lots of minerals and other good things that bring the PH up again, so your mouth is less acidic. The gum has to be sugar free though; otherwise, you are just adding more wood to the fire.

Tip #2: Drink 8 glasses of water daily. Lots of people can’t brush or

floss their teeth on the road or at work, so what those people need to do is drink lots of water and rinse their mouth with water. This also balances the PH in your mouth and helps dissolve that acid as well as getting rid of other debris.

Tips #3: Keep a floss card with you. Lots of dental offices have a little card that has a little floss tool. It’s like a credit card you can put in your wallet or purse. It’s easy to carry and easy to get ahold of. Flossing after you eat is another great way to have great teeth and maintain healthy gums.

Tip #4: Stay away from food loaded with sugar. When picking the food you are going to eat, make sure it doesn’t have a lot of sugar. Try to stay away from the cookies, candies, breads and food that have a lot of sticky sugary material in them, such as pastries. You will be doing your mouth and teeth a great service. Stick with natural foods such as fruits and vegetables and you will go a long way in protecting your teeth.

Tip #5: Use a professional to bleach your teeth. Most of our patients come into the office for a professional bleaching routine.

Oftentimes, with home bleaching, patients don’t get the results they want right away. Home kits usually take 2-4 weeks to see results and it’s a lot of maintenance at home. Lot’s of times at home you may use too much or not enough, or swallow some of the material, etc. We make sure the materials we use are safe and we put on the right amount and use just enough to get your teeth white and bright. It’s not very expensive either, so most patients will be able to do it and can have it done quickly.

In most businesses, owners have to deal with each and every person who walks through their door. Of course, not every person is pleasant to deal with. With that in mind, I feel extremely fortunate to be in a business where I have more control. I actually get to choose the people I want to spend my time with and I love it! Over the years, I’ve really become selective by spending my time with people that I genuinely like, trust and respect. Out of all the clients I work with, Jay Brown, the owner of Official Smog ranks at the top of that short list.

I knew Jay was an unusually hard worker when he told me that he owned three shops and also ran his own computer engineering business, but when I found out the other day that he was planning to box professionally later this year, I had a hard time believing it. Boxing is an unusually physically and mentally demanding sport that almost always requires hours and hours of training every day. Most professional boxers have little or no time for anything else, especially owning a business. Well, I did a little research and found out that Jay is not just your average boxer. He has been ranked number 3 in the United States in Amateur boxing for the last four years. He’s also ranked in the U.S. Olympic Trials as one of the top 10 boxers in the United States in the super heavyweight division. This is a weight class where most of his opponents stand around 6’7 to 6’9 and weigh in somewhere between 270 to 300 pounds!

Since Jay is about average in height at 5’9 with a stocky build, I asked him how he is not only able to compete, but to actually consistently beat opponents that are so much larger and younger. “My style is a lot like former heavyweight champions Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson. I use lots of head movement and rely great inside power. I broke Tyson’s junior Olympic record for the fastest knockout with a five second knockout at the united nationals,” said Jay.

I asked Jay how he manages to find the time to train. “Right now, with running my engineering company full time and running

three auto shops full time, you really have to find the dedication and time to train. Right now, every morning I wake up and start my day off with two hours of training and by the time I’m finished with my work around 6 to 8 o’clock at night, I’ll finish my day off with two more hours of training for a total of four hours a day. A lot of my friends call me the alien because they don’t see where I have time to sleep or do anything else! Anything worth having is worth sacrificing the time for,” explained Jay.

Jay was involved in sports while attending high school and college. He played football in high school and college. During his days at American River College and Sac State, he earned a spot as the starting running back. I asked him how he

got involved with boxing. “After a few years in the professional world, I decided to get back into sports and try something else like boxing. The first three months of being a boxer, I captured the Northern California Gold Gloves Championship and in my first year I placed number 4 in the United States in the Nationals. I won the National Tournament at the California state level and went on to fight in the National Tournament and ranked number 4 in the United States my first year.

I asked Jay what’s his secret to success was. He went on to explain it in five words: “Hard work, dedication and focus. I’m 33 years old right now and I would have been the oldest boxer in history to make the Olympics. I wasn’t able to make that dream happen because I missed the trials due to my father’s death. To be competing on a platform with 18-22 year old guys at my age surely felt good,” smiled Jay.

Jay has a consistent approach and philosophy with everything he does in life. “Boxing is a mentally tough sport and just carrying that over to my day to day life has allowed me to be the type of person I am in business. When things are slow or when obstacles present themselves, that’s when my

mental toughness takes over. My computer engineering business is doing great and it’s allowed me to open up the auto shops. I don’t have to rely on the automotive industry to make my living, so I’m able to offer a lower price to the public to help the people who can’t afford to spend $70-$80 on a smog check. I’m able to offer it at a more reasonable price and I have good employees that help carry the weight of the business on their shoulders. I feel good that I’ve helped create a few more jobs and make it affordable for them to live as well,” Jay remarked.

Car Tech TalkBranching Out

For the past 6 years or so, we’ve dedicated ourselves to being a BMW/Mini only shop. Over the course of business, we’ve been asked to work on other makes, most of which we’ve turned down. However, for our really good customers, we’ve been known to make exceptions. One of our goals was to be the best BMW/Mini repair facility in the Sacramento area.

I think we’ve been able to do this by sticking to basic principles of business and customer service.

One recurring theme over time has been the request to work on Volkswagens. In my past, I’ve worked for a premier VW tuner/ repair shop in Santa Clara. It’s where I learned the business from

the ground up. It is also our future…Valley Motorwerks is adding

Volkswagen to the lineup of vehicles we service. Volkswagens use

similar control units, Bosch, Siemens, etc. Consequently, the most complicated issues we will run into are already within our skill

set. Additionally, Valley Motorwerks is already a

Bosch Certified Service Center. We do not take this responsibility lightly. We will make the transition slowly over the next month or so. This is to insure that all of our customers, regardless of car brand, experience a smooth transition.

An Odd Problem with an Odder RepairWe recently had a customer that was experiencing some

drivability issues. It was not missing or hesitating, it just felt low on power under medium to hard acceleration. We performed all the normal tests, one of which told us it was running lean. We performed updates to the engine software. Additionally, we “smoke” tested the entire intake system and found nothing. However, for us, it seemed to run well and we released the car after resetting its adaptations. We asked the customer to return if the problem resurfaced.

A few months had passed and she returned with an oil leak and the drivability issue. We had already looked at it and had previously repaired another oil leak, so the checkout was free. When she dropped it off, I explained that a bad leak could possibly cause a rough running problem too. Remove the oil filler cap on a BMW and you’ll see what I mean. The engine is a sealed unit, the engine breather system relies on a completely sealed engine as it returns overpressure back into the intake system in a closed loop.

We found the oil pan bolts (finger tight) as the source of the leak. Additionally, a transmission bolt was in the wrong place and had never been and never could be tightened. The oil pan bolts are aluminum and are “torque to yield” one time use only. However, as a favor to a very good customer, we snugged them down for her to stem the leak temporarily. She had to go through her service records to see when the transmission had been removed. The car had only been worked on at a dealership until its visit to us, which was quite unnerving. The good news is that her car runs perfectly again and for now at least, her oil leak is resolved!
