From the impressive architecture and priceless collections of Mount Stuart on Bute to the innovation, architecture, heritage and design of the castles of Mull and Skye, there’s no shortage of stunning architecture and design to enjoy on the Western Isles.

The west coast islands are also rich in traditional crafts and skills. Craftsmen and women in the Small Isles and elsewhere still create baskets, pottery and jewellery using traditional techniques. The ultimate celebration of this is the Clo Mòr Festival of Harris Tweed, which takes place on Lewis between August and October.

Simultaneously innovation is thriving. An excellent selection of local produce, ales, whiskies, gins, chocolates and other delights can now be produced on a bigger scale than ever before and businesses such as the stylish new Isle of Harris Distillers are leading Scotland’s Western Isles into the future.

Book your trip today and get ready to experience the best of Scottish craft and creativity.

In celebration of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, many of this year’s Day Out ideas shine the spotlight on creativity.

Whisky and the West Coast of Scotland have been closely associated for hundreds of years and the tradition continues today with world renowned distilleries and distinct brands. The islands and peninsulas of Kintyre, Arran, Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, Harris and Lewis as well as mainland locations including Oban and Kilchoman are all destinations where you can visit the local distilleries to learn more about the history and skills and, of course, sample a taste.

Purchase a whisky pass and enjoy a range of great added value offers, discounts and promotions when you visit the distilleries and other great whisky partners including hotels, bars and tour companies from Glasgow to the islands.

If you’re travelling with a willing designated driver, why not take advantage of this island-based real ale trail? There are currently eight microbreweries with a great range of established ales on the islands of Bute, Arran, Islay, Colonsay, Mull, Skye and Lewis. There are also breweries in Oban, Plockton, Glenfinnan and at the head of Loch Fyne near Inveraray, all great stopovers en route to or near our ferry terminals.

More usually associated with its world-class whiskies, Scotland also has a long and proud history of brewing beer with a number of small, independent breweries using the rich natural environment and pure waters to produce excellent and innovative craft beers free from artificial additives and preservatives.

To follow the Real Ale Trail simply book a return ferry ticket to visit the destination or if visiting several islands, try our Hopscotch 4, 18, 22 or 13 tickets. To create your own island adventure visit www.calmac.co.uk

Accept an invitation to one of the last surviving clan homes in Scotland.

Take time to enjoy one of the most beautiful castle locations when you visit Duart Castle. Home of the Clan Maclean for over 400 years, the castle stands proudly on the cliff top above the Sound of Mull, visible as you arrive into Craignure by ferry and owned by the current head of Clan Maclean, the charming Sir Lachlan Maclean.

With its dramatic setting on the peninsula protected by rocky cliffs and the sea below, this is a must see on a visit to Mull and a great place to spend a half day or more leisurely full day out. A small and lovingly restored family home with an old world charm and spectacular setting, Duart Castle is one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland and one of the last privately owned Clan Homes in Scotland, current home to the clan chief and dating back to the 13th century. Visit the dungeons where Spanish galleon officers were once imprisoned, learn about the Clan Chiefs and enjoy panoramic views of the Sound of Mull and surrounding mountains from the top of the castle, well worth the steep climb up. Take a stroll around the woodland and the battlements and enjoy fine views of the south end of Mull as well as across to the mainland plus the chance to spot some of the local wildlife, even on a rainy day! This is also the impressive location for a range of summer events every year.

Don’t miss the unique opportunity to be introduced to this idyllic island by a Coll native.

Only 13 miles by three, the Isle of Coll has long been regarded as one of the Hebrides’ hidden gems. This tour by a native islander will take you on a trip to explore some of the island’s unique spots.

A trip to the island’s two castles and chance to spot a rare summer feathered visitor, the corncrake, within the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ nature reserve, caters for a variety of interests.

An off-road adventure and a chance to enjoy one of the island’s many beaches, at your own leisure, as well as, if time allows, a wander through Coll’s only village, Arinagour, lets you savor the peace and quiet of this special and friendly island. Enjoying a central location in the Hebrides, you can spot an impressive number of islands on your horizon: from the uninhabited Treshnish Isles, to the far-flung Outer Hebrides.

The inspirational setting for Mairi Hedderwick’s children’s series about the feisty red-haired character Katie Morag, young visitors will also see much to delight: from the row of whitewashed cottages in the village main street, to the pristine shell beaches, it is easy to see why Coll is loved by thousands of visitors every year.

A ‘cathedral’ built entirely by nature? Safe to say there’s no other island quite like this!

From Craignure, you’ll be transferred by courtesy bus for the 35 minute journey to Ulva Ferry. Board the Turus Mara passenger vessel and set off, usually South about Ulva, heading to Staffa.

Ulva Ferry was the starting point for many intrepid adventurers who hired slow, rowing/sailing boats to ferry across the sometimes troubled waters to Staffa, a unique island often described as one of the “Wonders of the Commonwealth”.

Taking one of the shortest crossings, the trip from Ulva Ferry will take less than an hour. Beneath Benmore, the last Island Munro, and cruising Westwards out of Loch Na Keal, we pass historic Inch Kenneth on the left, burial place of ancient kings of Scotland, Ulva’s Isle with its own columnar basalt on the right, before rounding Little Colonsay and crossing open water another 15 minutes to Fingal’s Cave. Land at The Clamshell Cave and walk the short distance along the causeway. Explore the columns and be astonished at this naturally formed, magnificent cathedral-like edifice. Imagine Mendelssohn’s Overture as you venture inside.

Staffa Island

Take a wander around the natural wonders of Staffa and the Treshnish Isles.

Arriving at Craignure our courtesy bus whisks you along to the little port of Ulva Ferry, skirting Loch Na Keal, and beneath Benmore, the last island Munro. It’s around 55 minutes to Staffa via the south side of Ulva, passing the historic island of Inch Kenneth, two salmon farms and Livingstone’s Cave. Rounding the island of Little Colonsay, the cake-shaped view of Staffa belies the awe inspiring sight of Fingal’s Cave to come in 15 minutes. Basalt columns soar up from sea level, creating a sight many consider a Wonder of the World. Enjoy time ashore here to explore the Causeway and walk inside this natural rock cathedral, source of mythology, musical inspiration, and a destination for millions of curious travellers through the ages.

The sight of small seabirds in the surrounding waters gives a taster for the fun to come on Lunga in the Treshnish Isles with it’s thousands of feathered friends and the tamest puffins who wait to entertain visitors.

The Harp Rock on Lunga is the must see venue for several thousand noisy birds including guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes. Panoramic views on a clear day from the top of Lunga take in Tiree, Coll, the Cuilins, Small Isles, Ardnamurchan, Mull, The Paps of Jura and even Skerryvore Lighthouse.

Go loco with a tour of this wildlife-rich archipelago.

The archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 41 miles west of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. Its islands, with their exceptional cliffs and sea stacs, are rich in wildlife and form the most important seabird breeding station in north-west Europe. The season for puffins (usually end of April to early August) and for gannets (April to October). The evacuation of the local population in 1930 brought to a close an extraordinary story of survival.

St Kilda is one of only 29 locations in the world to be awarded World Heritage Status for both natural and cultural significance.

Your trip begins at Uig Pier on Skye for the journey of 85 miles to St Kilda, around four hours each way. You’ll have approximately four hours on the main island of St Kilda plus cruise from Hirta to Boreray and Sea Stacs Lee and An Armin which are located around three miles to the north of Hirta before returning to Uig. On arrival in Village Bay, it’s a short transfer by Zodiac dinghy to the main St Kilda island of Hirta where you’ll be free to explore. The St Kilda museum, school and Church provide a fascinating insight into the old way of life. The remains of the village, the graves and 2nd World War gun are all open to view.

Discover the secrets of Skye and unlock the legend of the 800 year old Clan MacLeod.

Standing on a rocky outcrop in an idyllic loch side setting, Dunvegan is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home and stronghold of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years.

In the castle there are displays of fine oil paintings, antique furniture, and other clan treasures including Jacobite relics and the famous Fairy Flag, a legendary and ancient battle banner said to have amazing powers. Other treasures include the Dunvegan Cup, dating back to the Middle Ages. Parts of the castle date to the 9th century.

Enjoy a tour of this beautiful, important and impressive castle. Make sure you allow time to explore and enjoy the beautiful formal gardens including the elegant walled garden and the water garden, with gentle walking trails, woodland glades, waterfalls and streams leading to the sea.

A must do when at the castle is a boat trip (bookable when visiting) to see the local seal colony. There are thousands of seals in the bay next to the castle and in late June and early July the seal pups are born. The castle also has a number of cafes and gift shops.

Ullapool is a picturesque fishing village on the shore of Loch Broom, just an hour north of Loch Ness. It enjoys good bus links from Glasgow, Portree, Skye and Inverness.

Enjoy a scenic crossing to the bustling harbour town of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the beautiful Outer Hebrides.

Heading out from Ullapool you’ll cross The Minch, a long stretch of sea water between the west coast of Scotland and the Hebrides. During the crossing it’s common to see some of the rich sea life including pods of dolphins as well as porpoises, seals, whales and even basking sharks, particularly during summer months. As you approach Stornoway the panoramic views of Lewis and Harris are wonderful.

You’ll have around two hours free to explore, sample some of the great local produce and browse the great crafts available. It’s just a few minutes walk to the centre of town and nearby attractions. Stroll around the grounds of Lews Castle, site of the award winning HebCelt festival each summer. Explore the local area and visit the arts centre An Lanntair (‘The Lantern’) based on the waterfront of Stornoway Harbour and close to the ferry terminal.

This is a great short introduction and taste of the beautiful Outer Hebrides.
