    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    Galen

    Lived 129 A.D. c. 216 A.D.

Galens medical doctrine dominated the Western and Arab worldsfor close to 1500 years.

Galen was a Greek who became the Roman Empires greatestphysician, authoring more books still in existence than any otherAncient Greek: about 20,000 pages of his work survive. He was thepersonal physician to Romes Emperors for decades.

He consolidated the work of previous Greek medical researchers, adding the results of his own research, to create an incredibly long-lasting medical doctrine.

Galen had great expertise in anatomy, surgery, pharmacology andtherapeutic methods. He is famous for bringing philosophy intomedicine although most of his philosophical works have been lost.

We know more about him than other ancient scientists because ofthe sheer abundance of his medical writing.

Today, some practices promoted by Galen are still recognized asuseful, while others are regarded as dangerous.

    Galens Early Years and Education

Galen was born in the year 129 A.D. in the wealthy Greek city ofPergamon in the Eastern Roman Empire. Today Pergamon is inTurkey. Sometimes people use the names Galen of Pergamonor ClaudiusGalento identify him.

Pergamon was an ideal place for Galen to grow up; it was one of themost important cultural cities of ancient times, with a highly activeintellectual community. Its library was bettered only by the GreatLibrary of Alexandria.

Galens father, Nicon, was a very prosperous architect andmathematician. He was highly ambitious for his son, desiring that heshould become one of Pergamons greatest minds. He saw to it thathis son was educated to a high standard in the classic Greek fields ofgeometry, philosophy, logic and literature. He also taught his son notto mindlessly follow any one school of thought, but to think forhimself and judge every issue on its individual merits.

Like other wealthy people in those times, Galens family were slaveowners, using slaves to do all the routine work.

When Galen reached 16 years old, something remarkable happened. His father had a dream in which the Greek god of medicine,Asclepius, told him that Galen must divert his efforts to medicineand healing.

Nicon was not one to disobey the gods; Galen immediately droppedout of his logic and philosophy classes in favor of medicine.

For the rest of his life, Galen believed that Asclepius came to helphim whenever he was badly in need of help.

Although he spent most of his time on medical work, Galencontinued to think about philosophy. He believed the bestphysicians mixed philosophy with medicine.

12 Years Becoming a PhysicianGalen became a trainee doctor at a local upmarket hospital/healthresort, learning about medical methods there for almost four years, mainly from Satyrus, a well-known physician.

His father Nicon died and left Galen a large amount of money. Galen, who was almost 20 years old, decided it was time to spread his

wings. He traveled around the Mediterranean learning the latesttechniques in medicine and healing.

He ended his travels in the great city of Alexandrias medical school,

where he studied for about five years. Galen disliked almost everyaspect of life in Alexandria, except for what he could learn there.

He returned to Pergamon aged 28 or 29. He had been in danger ofbecoming an eternal student if you are rich and enjoy learning asmuch as Galen did, you can alwaysfind more to learn.

    Galen Becomes a Professional Physician

Galen returned to Pergamon as an elite physician. He had spent 12

years learning all of the different doctrines of ancient medicine fromaround the Mediterranean. He had seen ineffective techniques andeffective techniques, and he had applied his own skills to developinga range of effective methods.

He now chose to deploy his methods in an area where you could nothide from your mistakes.

He became physician to the gladiators of the Temple of PergamonsHigh Priest. According to Galen, his four years in this practiceenabled him to learn even more about medicine.

It is easy to believe that knowledge of the relationship between dietand health is a modern thing. Not so! Galen identified the importanceof a healthy diet for the well-being of the gladiators in his care.

He thought of the gladiators wounds he treated as windows, allowing him to see the functions of various parts of the body. Helearned the best ways of treating wounds and trauma, and also

learned how important good hygiene practices are. He reduced thedeath rate among gladiators dramatically, winning the admiration ofthe High Priest.

The windows proved to be very important to Galens increasinglysophisticated understanding of human anatomy, because dissection

of human bodies had been made illegal in the Roman Empire in theyear 150.

    Galen Master of Medicine

Galen was a compiler, consolidator, and critic as well as a discoverer.

We have to be careful not to credit him with other peoplesdiscoveries. Galen was a prolific author, and much of what hedescribed he owed to earlier Greek physicians, such as Hippocrates,Herophilos, Celsus, Alcmaeon, Praxagoras, Herophilos, Erasistratusand Asclepiades.

Galen mentioned earlier physicians by name in his books, helping

preserve their names in history, because it is through Galen that welearn about the discoveries some of these earlier scientists andphysicians made.

He took the earlier work and compared it with his own experimentaland practical findings. If he could confirm their work, he would useit; otherwise, he would criticize it, and say why it was wrong.

He had an absolute belief in the power of experiment andobservation. He did not believe in merely following what books had

told him was true. He needed to verify the truth for himself.

    The End

Details of Galens death are vague. Modern scholars believe he died inabout the year 216 A.D., aged 86 or 87, probably in Rome.

Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods

The new Nutrition Facts label will include the following:

An updated design to highlight calories and servings, twoimportant elements in making informed food choices.

Requirements for serving sizes that more closely reflect theamounts of food that people currently eat. What and how muchpeople eat and drink has changed since the last serving sizerequirements were published in 1993. By law, the NutritionLabeling and Education Act, requires that serving sizes be basedon what people actually eat.

Declaration of grams and a percent daily value (%DV) for addedsugars to help consumers know how much sugar has been addedto the product. It is difficult to meet nutrient needs while stayingwithin calorie limits if you consume more than 10 percent of yourtotal daily calories from added sugars, and this is consistent withthe scientific evidence supporting the 2015-2020 DietaryGuidelines for Americans.

Dual column labels to indicate both per serving and perpackage calorie and nutrition information for certain multi-serving food products that could be consumed in one sitting or

multiple sittings. Examples include a pint of ice cream and a 3-ounce bag of chips. With dual-column labels available, people willbe able to easily understand how many calories and nutrients theyare getting if they eat or drink the entire package/unit at one time.

For packages that are between one and two servings, such as a 20ounce soda, the calories and other nutrients will be required to belabeled as one serving because people typically consume it in onesitting.

Updated daily values for nutrients like sodium, dietary fiber andvitamin D, consistent with Institute of Medicine recommendationsand the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Daily valuesare reference amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceedand are used to calculate the %DV that manufacturers include onthe label.

Declaration of Vitamin D and potassium that will include theactual gram amount, in addition to the %DV. These are nutrientsthat some people are not getting enough of, which puts them athigher risk for chronic disease. The %DV for calcium and iron willcontinue to be required, along with the actual gram amount.Vitamins A and C will no longer be required because deficiencies

of these vitamins are rare, but these nutrients can be included on avoluntary basis.

Calories from Fat will be removed because research shows thetype of fat is more important than the amount. Total Fat,Saturated Fat, and Trans Fat will continue to be required.

An abbreviated footnote to better explain the %DV.

The FDA is also making minor changes to the Supplement Facts label

found on dietary supplements to make it consistent with theNutrition Facts label.

Most food manufacturers will be required to use the new label byJuly 26, 2018. Manufacturers with less than $10 million in annualfood sales will have an additional year to comply with the new rules.

The FDA plans to conduct outreach and education efforts on the newrequirements.

The iconic Nutrition Facts label was introduced more than 20 years

ago to help consumers make informed food choices and maintainhealthy dietary practices. In March 2014, the FDA proposed tworules to update the label, and in July 2015, issued a supplementalproposed rule. The Nutrition Facts label regulations apply topackaged foods except certain meat, poultry and processed eggproducts, which are regulated by the U.S. Department ofAgricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service.

FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human

Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccinesand other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency is also responsible for the safety and security of ournations food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products thatgive off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
