"The Guru’s form is the best to meditate upon; the Guru’s feet are the best for worship; the Guru’s word is the mantra; the Guru’s Grace is the root of liberation."
Vyasa (Guru) Poornima
The Poornima (Full Moon) Day in the month of Ashadha (July-August) is known as "Vyasa Poornima or Guru Poornima". This is a very sacred day on which special worship is performed to the Gurus, who, through their Infinite Compassion and Supreme Grace, have imparted the Knowledge of the Absolute (Brahma Vidya) through a long and continuous line of Acharyas (Guru Parampara) to all the Seekers of the Self. Among the Gurus, Sri Veda Vyasa stands the foremost and on this day, special pujas are offered to Him. He codified the Vedas into four divisions, summed up the messages of the Upanishads into His Brahma Sutras and penned the great epic Mahabharatha as well as the eighteen Puranas. Sri Shuka, Sri Gaudapada and Sri Govinda Bhagavatpada kept the light of the Guru Parampara burning.
Guru Parampara
Then came Sri Adi Shankaracharya who revived the Sanathana Dharma through Advaitham. Of the four Mutts He established around the four corners of Bharath the Jyothir Mutt descending from the lineage of Sri Thodakacharya stands as a prime example of Guru Bhakti. Our Guru Maharaj Sathguru Sri Gnanananda Giri Swamigal and the Pontiffs of the Giri Peetam established by His prime disciple HH Swami Haridas Giri descend from this lineage of Guru Parampara.
Vyasa Puja
The puja performed on Vyasa Poornima is called Vyasa Puja and as part of this special pujas are performed to the hierarchy of Gurus, seeking Their Grace to realise the Supreme Truth. Vyasa Pooornima signals the commencement of the Chathurmasya Vrata observed in accordance to the Shastras by Sannyasis for a period of two months. Devotees have always deemed it a privilege and duty to do Padha Puja and offer Bhiksha Vandanam to their Guru during this period. The Shvetashvatara Upanishad (6/23) says:
Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau | Tasyaite kathitaa hi arthaaha prakashante mahatmanaha ||
"All welfare is showered on the pious one, who has intense devotion towards the Guru just as he has intense devotion towards God."
Padha Puja and Bhiksha Vandanam
In accordance with this tradition, Padha Puja and Bhiksha Vandanam will be performed to our current Pontiff of Sri Gnanananda Giri Peetam, HH Sri Niranjanananda Giri from Sunday 9th July 2017 (Vyasa Poornima day) until Thursday 5th October 2017 (the first Poornima following Navarathri). It is our heartfelt wish that all devotees partake of this most auspicious occasion to perform Padha Puja and Bhiksha Vandanam to our Guru Parampara and be subject to the infinite Grace and blessings of our Guru Maharaj, Guruji, Namaji and Swamiji.
