107 Years of Service to Mankind

Its seven years more than a century ago

that Paul Harris breathed life into the worldsfirst service organization. He and his three

riends gathered together on that wintry evening of February 23,1905 and began what is now known as Rotary International. Feel-ng cold and lonely, they were one in creating our unique world ofellowship and service.

Did Paul Harris ever think his four-member organization would grownto a worldwide movement of more than 2.2 million? Perhaps not.On one occasion he was asked about it and he said casually that if

ne planted a seed it would have to contend with the sun and rainnd all the forces that would influence its growth. He didnt live

ong enough to witness the growth of Rotary from one small club tomore than 32,000 clubs around the world.

He died in 1947. But until today his dream has continued to live in

he hearts and minds of Rotarians and the Rotary movement haseaselessly moved forward to change peoples lives to attain theream of building a beautiful and peaceful world.

his month, Rotarians have every reason to celebrate Rotarys

107th founding anniversary. For 107 years Rotary has overcomehe challenge of every generation and has continued to do good inhe world to promote friendship and peace. It has continued tohange lives through relevant service projects that empower peo-le to attain self-sufficiency and self-reliance. It has continued toring hope to millions of people who would otherwise have spentheir lives in misery. Through programs and projects focused onoverty, health and hunger, literacy, crime, drug abuse, and thenvironment, Rotary has made its mark in the history of mankind.

One fine example is The Rotary Foundations PolioPlus program

which was started right here in the Philippines in 1978 in collabora-on with the Philippine government. With its initial success, Polio-lus was adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and im-lemented worldwide in 1988 with the goal of banishing thereaded poliovirus from the face of the earth by 2005. Today, Ro-ary is that close to eliminating polio. Only three (Nigeria, Pakistan,

& Afghanistan) of the 125 polio-endemic countries in 1988 remainwith pockets of polio outbreaks. In 2011, less than 650 polio caseswere reported. When PolioPlus was launched, polio infected an

stimated 350,000 children a year. But today, more than 2 billionhildren have already been immunized in 122 countries, prevent-ng 5 million cases of paralysis and 250,000 deaths.

With these figures, can you imagine what our world would haveecome under the clutches of polio? Those more than 2 billion chil-ren who have been immunized are now living normal and happyves and are looking forward to a future that is bright and secure.

Rotarys success in the PolioPlus program demonstrates its tre-

mendous relevance to our world. This success has drawn the sup-ort of international partners, including the Bill and Melinda Gatesoundation which has contributed some US$405 million to beef upunds to completely eliminate polio.

While PolioPlus stands as Rotarys single greatest contribution to

he world, Rotary clubs bring other miracles to the lives of people in

heir communities. These miracles, brought through simple but

relevant projects, lead to peace. When a poor child is able to gschool through a scholarship grant, when a person is given acto employment, when a family is benefited by a livelihood progwhen the poor is able to enjoy free health services and medicithese are simple avenues of service that bring peace to peo

lives in almost every corner of the world. Add to these the mprograms of The Rotary Foundation and you have a kaleidoscoplife-changing miracles that bring rainbows to the lives of the poo

Departing from the tradition of holding a dinner among a few

dred Rotarians, to commemorate Rotarys anniversary this our district decided to hold two memorable events which lent mmeaning to the celebration of the founding of our organizaFirst, last February 25th, we held a big medical, dental, optical, diagnostic mission at the Quezon City Hall. Additionally, the Rotary Club of Francisco del Monte, led by Silver President Ronnie Yap, heparallel medical and surgical mission at the Ramon MagsaHigh School in Cubao. Forty-five patients were operated on incing 22 major surgeries inside the clubs mobile surgical unit.

Second, on the following day, February 26th, to commemoWorld Peace and Understanding, our district held the first-evetary Run, a 5-kilometer fun run that started from Quezon City to Commonwealth Avenue and around the Quezon Memorial CRotarians, with a number of them with their spouses and child

Rotary Club of Diliman led by Silver President Jeng Ronquillothe Rotary Club of Roces led by Silver President Eren Tumali wlead host clubs, which apart from organizing the event, provthe cash prizes and medals awarded to the winners.

This month therefore as we celebrate Rotarys 107th founding aversary, let us reflect on the many simple ways that we htouched peoples lives and find real joy in our contributions to w

peace. From this, let us find inspiration to continue serving otas we move forward to our dream of building a beautiful peaceful world.

February is World Under-standing and PeaceMonth in Rotary. I con-sider this as one of themore significant themesmade more apparent with

the unveiling by RIPE Sa-kuji Tanaka of the next RItheme, Peace Through

    Service.

The recent series of disasters in parts ofthe world (including the Philippines in Ca-gayan De Oro, Iligan City, Dumaguete, etc.)caused by typhoons, landslides, snow-storms, tsunamis and earthquakes havebrought out the best in those who care andunderstand the need for international unityand call for immediate humanitarian actionin order to help those who had been mostaffected and in dire need of immediate as-sistance. If you have been following theseevents closely, you will find that Rotary isconsistently present and doing its part tothe fullest. Let us continue to do our partbecause together we can create a biggerimpact and a greater difference.

I always believe that the Internationality ofRotary is one of the primary reasons why it

has survived through the years and evenexpanded to more countries than what PaulHarris could have ever imagined when hestarted this great organization 107 yearsago. Rotary has developed a unique abilityto sustain international cooperation and

understanding. This has been going onthrough the implementation of joint pro-jects between 2 or more clubs from differ-ent districts and from different countries. Ofcourse the various Rotary Foundationscholarships and exchange programs con-tributed tremendously towards the develop-ment of tolerance and awareness of differ-ent cultures and beliefs.

Actually this thought will never be appreci-ated by Rotarians who have never involvedthemselves in the many aspects of Rotary.Merely attending meetings will not makeone a committed Rotarian though it is nec-essary part of our involvement. The greaterpart is to be able to experience what Rotaryhas done and continues to do for the com-munities and the world. Only then will onestart to appreciate what being a Rotarian isall about. Many of us have been able torealize this because we took the extra stepof trying to discover what Rotary has to of-

fer and how we can be an important ment of a greater effort.

In 1956-57 Gian Paolo Langof the RoClub of Livorno, Italy, was the 46th Pdent of Rotary International. His Rotarsion: To educate, encourage, and fo

understanding among all peoples. He quoted as saying in an address to the 1Rotary Convention, Lucerne, Switzerl

"The spirit of Rotary is not exclusive; i

pands. It is not local, it is universal. It is

wish to understand and be understood

see virtues rather than faults in other

find what we have in common rather t

    what divides us."

Let us not forget to celebrate

107thanniversary of Rotary. Lets obsthis milestone by participating in and porting events that will create more aw

ness of the good that Rotary brings to thwho are most in need in this imperworld of ours. In order to commemoratebirth of Rotary International and live uthe February RI theme, our District 3has lined-up two activities District-wmedical missions on February 25 and for-acause the following day.

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

This November, I had the opportunity to speak at theRotary institute in Kolkata, India. The focus of this insti-tute was on peace and the ways in which we in Rotarycould work to build peace. When I received the invita-tion, I began to think about what I might say, knowingthat with all that Rotarians do in this area, my main chal-

enge would be keeping within the time limit!

But just before I arrived in Kolkata, I spoke at a water conference in Telviv. It was a wonderful event at which Rotarians and non-Rotarians fromll over the world came together to discuss the many challenges of keep-

ng an ever-growing population supplied with an increasingly scarce re-ource. Before I could begin to talk about Rotarys contribution, however,

had to explain what Rotary is and what we do because even in thatery educated audience of scientists and entrepreneurs and executives, here were many people who had simply never heard of Rotary.

s I left that event, I began to think again about what to say in Kolkata, ecause so much of what we do in Rotary to build peace depends onublic awareness of who we are. Why have we been so successful in our

work to eradicate polio? Because Rotary is able to go where no govern-ment and few other nongovernmental organizations can into homes, nto schools, and into communities, with the trust and confidence of theeople we serve.

When we in Rotary work for peace, we dont do it by negotiating treaties

r demonstrating in the streets. Instead, we build peace by example byworking together, whatever our nationality or background, and putting

thers needs above our own. We build peace by dealing with the prob-

ems that disrupt peoples ability to live normal, peaceful lives whetherhose problems are a lack of water, or sanitation, or safe, affordableousing; whether they stem from a shortage of education or health care,r a need to build productive and positive connections between commu-ities. In everything we do, we rely on our good name.

his is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good names indeed known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk aboutRotary letting the world know about the work we are doing, the differ-

nces we are making, and the benchmarks we are setting. Our Rotarywork speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible,nd we need to be sure that our voices are heard.

    Kalyan Banerjee President, Rotary International

RI Presidents February Message Foundation Chairmans February MessagOur Foundation helps us help othersA friend who is an Arch C. Klumph Society merecently sent me an email ending with words thamind us of why we support our Foundation. John blife in humble circumstances and became a succebusinessman. Through our Foundation, he has shthat success with people who have no ability to

themselves. He said: As someone who was born poor on a farm d

the Depression, I can confirm that when you have nothing, a littgoes a long way to help. I remember like it was yesterday tneighbours and relatives who helped our family of nine and gavsupport and encouragement. In essence, this is our Foundations

    sion.

Another quote that impressed me recently came from a Rotarian Rotary institute: I joined Rotary for business and fellowship. I staye

    change the world.

For many of us, Rotary is our only way to change the world. As indials, there is little we can do on our own, but when we join with our feRotarians, we do make a difference. How we do that depends on wwe are. If you are in a country with great needs, then you will be invoin identifying the needs of people and developing and implemeprojects that will change their lives. If you are one of this generation

has been blessed with success, then you can help by making resouavailable. Our Rotary Foundation, in a sense, sits in the middlemakes the connection.

Our business model works, which is why we will in a few years cele100 years of supporting Rotarians in making the world a better pWe have passed the test of time.
