The grade 4 field trip to the Garuda maintenance hangars was an absolutely amazing experience for everyone! When we arrived everybody was excited because we were going to see how they maintain and fix a plane. First, the people there asked us questions about aircrafts and everyone answered with joy. Then they told us about the different types of planes and about how many people can fit in them. After that they took us inside the plane so we could examine what machines were in it.

Then they took us to the place where they repair and maintain the engines. Over there the teachers told us to see if we could find all of the 6 simple machines. We examined everything closely and eventually we did find all 6 simple machines. We even looked at some of the unrepaired engines and could see what was on the inside. We found out it was very, very complex. They said that they used more than 500 screws for it and that the engines needed to be serviced every 4 years.

We all enjoyed it and we all learnt from it. Over all it was a fabulous experience for everyone.

GMIS is known for supporting spontaneity, imagination and artistic talents among students. For years our school has provided appropriate support to the students and ensured that educational standards of the IB program are maintained through various page to stage activities. Bee in My Bonnet is another such activity. This much awaited activity provide students the tools for thought and helps in developing imagination and enhancing learning. On Feb, 2012, the fun filled activity Bee in My Bonnet was held. In contrast to the blue and white of our school uniform, the GMIS auditorium was swamped by a host of anomalous and colorful bonnets and the entire stage was abuzz with innovation and creativity. Our themes for the bonnets were “Warriors”, “Seasons and Cowboys”. These themes surely motivated us to inquire into subject content and reflect on them from various perspectives. This balanced approach to inquiry by the participants, I am sure was achieved by considering these themes from different perspectives. Each participant attested that the Bee in my Bonnet page to stage has provided them the opportunity to appreciate and develop in them the capacity to create, transform, enjoy and improve the quality of life. The ornate backdrop of the stage added to the afternoon’s performance and made it a complete package of a fun filled show. The extravagant riots of colors enveloped the stage and perfectly matched the dazzling bonnets of the participants. To add more color to the show we witnessed a brilliant dance performance by Grade 10 students with Bonnets as their props. In the twinkling of an eye one hour flew past and we reached the end of the show which concluded with an inspiring and motivating speech by our honorable principal Mr A.P.Singh.Two words to conclude the afternoon’s Bee in My Bonnet page to stage performance; Simply Mesmerizing.

The Hindi Department of Gandhi Memorial International School put up a programme in order to celebrate Hindi Dayan 24th of February 2012. The show began on a multicultural note by Martin, a Russian student leaving everyone spellbound with his amazing Hindi speaking skills. Later, the emcees conducted the entire function in both, Hindi and English. The principal inaugurated the function with the lighting of the lamp which was followed by a beautiful Bharatnatyam (a dance from the south of India) performance by Anasuya and Jaicy of grade 11. Later, a beautiful poetry depicting the rich culture and heritage of India was recited. While the senior school students did a spectacular performance, the tiny tots were not to be left behind. The Bharatnatyam was followed by a Rajasthani folk dance by the PYP girls. This dance performance was really energetic and left a smile on the faces of the audience. After the dance, a fashion show by these little students was organised. The show was a huge success as the little kids from different nationalities wore Indian costumes and walked the ramp. The costumes showcased the regional dresses from different parts of India. The show was loved by all.The fashion show by the little students of GMIS was then taken over by the teachers. Many teachers, both Indian and Indonesian took part in the event. They dressed up in the most loved costume by any Indian lady, a saree. They wore it with a lot of beauty and grace and totally stunned everyone. Then, a few girls from the middle school showcased another classical Indian dance, Kathak. The dance was a delight to watch and was a huge success. When the students were doing wonders on the stage, would their mentors stay behind? So, the teachers did a graceful dance on the Indian song, Kehna hi Kya. The poise and balance with which the teachers did the dance became an inspiration for every student of GMIS.After a graceful and soothing performance by the teachers, the boys of grade 11 took over the stage with a sensational performance. Their Assamese dance was totally a performance to remember. The fun-filled dance was praised by the entire crowd.

Hindi DayThe stage was then taken over by our teacher Miss Arunima who sang the melodious Hindi song, Khwabon ke Parindey with two other students from grade 10. Their musical performance was lovely and it poured out the emotions of beauty and joy. It was appreciated by the entire audience with a loud round of applause. After the song was

the finale of the show. It was a dance by the girls of grade 11. The dance showcased the regional dances from the different states of India. From Punjab to Rajasthan to Kerala, the girls got the whole of India alive on stage. They performed different folk dances on many different melodies. The finale was so enjoyable that the crowd couldn’t stop clapping in praise. With this finale, the function got to an end, leaving memories of a beautiful celebration of Hindi Day reminded everyone of the open-mindedness and creativity of both, the students and teachers of GMIS.Divya Akhouri (11 IB)

Elocution – The art of public speaking in which gesture, vocal production and delivery are emphasized is an important skill that is usually a hallmark of all great leaders. At GMIS, the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow get to hone their oratory skills through the Inter House Elocution Competition. This year, The PYP Inter House Elocution Competition – 2012 was held on Tuesday, 7th February 2012. The event started with MCs Aishwarya and Adisaan, under the guidance of Ms. Krishna and Ms. Annie, flagging off the event with a wonderful power point presentation followed by

the main event where the Finalists from grade 1 – 4 mesmerized the audience with beautiful poems and the grade 5 finalists inspired everyone with speeches by famous people. All the finalists had come through tough qualifying rounds and gave fantastic performances. The training from the teachers and the support from the parents ensured an overall impact that was appreciated by everyone. The costumes were awesome and our respected Principal Sir A.P. on 28th february, the GMIS auditorium was filled with the hustle and bustle of the participants who were excited to showcase their costumes creatively designed on the themes “historical personalities”, “Chinese costumes” and “superheroes.” This “page on stage” not only encouraged students to be independent and enthusiastic but also heightened their qualities of being a risk taker and open minded, which is a part of the IB learner profile. Some of them had taken part the first time, expressing their creativity through the stylishly designed costumes. The show kicked off with a power point on the journey of fashion throughout the years and the emcees presenting a short history of the fashion world. A show is even more enjoyable when there is fun and laughter; this was made possible by our theme introducers from grade 9, through their humorous skits. The students participated in great numbers and showed great enthusiasm and team spirit. Each designer passionately described the way the costume had been designed, while the models, who displayed these dresses, were no less elegant than the Avant garde fashion models of Paris. The Principal Mr. AP Singh ended the show by appreciating the participants for blending such diverse themes on stage so creatively.

2nd February of 2012 will definitely be day to cherish. On that particular joyous day, GMIS staff as well as students dedicated their energy and time in celebrating the Chinese New Year. The school was rich with the color of red, students, teachers, parents and staff all wore traditional Chinese dresses and red colored dresses. The walls were decorated with red paper and pictures of dragons. The sight of numerous beautiful red lanterns filled the ground floor. The atmosphere was no different than it would have been in China.

The special day started with a lovely morning assembly consisting of a series of informative and entertaining performances by the students and teachers. Regardless of age and gender, every one present in the assembly, enjoyed the show immensely, with a display of wide smiles on their radiant faces. The assembly had surely brightened up their day.

The festivities didn’t stop there. Fun and exciting games, along with a delicious and multicultural food bazaar was organized to keep the atmosphere of happiness high in everyone’s mind. Students lined up, brainstormed, laughed, jumped and shouted

in excitement to answer Chinese riddles correctly and get Ang Paos. Teachers and students bought and explored the different varieties of food.

The day ended with smiles and joy. It was undoubtedly one of “those days” in school that would remain memorable for us.

On the 22nd and 23rd of February 2012, the grade 5 students went on

an adventurous camp trip to Highland Park Bogor, a five-star Mongolian

Camp in Bogor. Early at six thirty in the morning students and teachers

departed from GMIS to Bogor. After a two-hour trip, they reached the

ravishing Highland Park. As everyone surged out of the buses, they were

sight struck by the beauty of the scenery. The park, located on a hill slope,

was surrounded by lush green misty mountains. Before starting on the

adventure, everyone savoured the mouth-watering spread that was laid

for breakfast. After breakfast, children enjoyed challenging activities such

as flying fox, high rope, soccer and many other activities like dog-and-

bone, tailing donkey, blindfold, flying balls and many more. After a hearty

lunch, students checked into the spacious and unbelievably attractive

tent. They all rested for about 3 hours and as soon as they heard the word

‘SWIMMING’, they jumped out of their beds, change to their swimsuits,

locked their tents and rushed into the luxurious pool. In the evening, all

grade 5 students presented their talents of

dance, song and skit performance.

As night fell, the park attained a festive

look with bright colourful lanterns hanging

However, it started to rain cats and dogs. Many screamed and trembled

while others simply cuddled in their cozy beds and went to sleep. The

next morning, everyone woke up early and went for aerobics at 7 am.

Everybody was ready to face yet another day. After aerobics, they a the

Animals are a very important part of our ecosystem and must be taken care of.

On the 23rd of February, 2012, members of Jakarta Animal Aid Network were invited to GMIS by the students and teachers of Primary CAS and Animal Protection Club.

JAAN members explained to us in detail about how they help the wild and pet/domestic animals in need. We listened attentively and asked many questions. We, The Gandhi Memorial International School donated Rp. 1,500,000 for the dogs and cats under the care of JAAN.

It was indeed a very good learning experience for all of us. We are very excited about supporting and helping the animals in need.

It was the 2nd of March 2012 and the 7th graders were going to Bandung. We started from the school at around 7 in the morning and were heading to Trans Studio Bandung. It took us about 3 hours to reach our destination. As soon as we reached there, we went up to the Trans Studio. Excitement came over us as we stepped in. It was really big, with a lot of hilarious rides. There were speedy roller coasters, haunted house, water slides, rock climbing etc. There was also a parade. As we finished our day there, we headed towards our villa. It was one of the best villa’s I have ever seen. It was big, with many rooms, living room, dining table and a SWIMMING POOL!!!

The next day, we went to treetop outbound. It was really challenging but the fun was worth it. There were flying fox’s, etc. we finished at about 12 and enjoyed pizza’s and spaghetti at the villa. At around 3, we went swimming in the swimming pool at our villa. That night we went to Kampung Daun which was really good. We spent our last night of our trip having a bonfire, playing tug of war, eating corn by the fire etc. the next morning we headed to De Ranch where we could go horse riding, fishing, gold hunting etc. Then we headed to Paris Van Java for refreshing shopping. We had our lunch there and then at around 2, we headed back to Jakarta. I am sure to never forget this awesome trip ever.

At last the day had arrived. Grades 6 were going on one of the most eagerly awaited field trips in our calendar, to BALI! On the 15th of February, a party of 36 set of for a memorable 5 day stay in Bali, the island of the Gods. After a late arrival, we went straight to our accommodation in Seminyak, before heading out to Menara animal and Safari lodge for a day of adventure and education. The live elephant show reminded us the importance of the theme of conservation, whereas the amusement park reminded us that education can be fun!

On Friday, we headed for the Hard Rock Cage, with a short detour to our sister school in Bali. This year, the students enjoyed the comforts of the fabulous deluxe rooms, as well as the best swimming pool in Bali.

On Saturday, we enjoyed the safe but taxing white water rafting on the Ayung River. On completion, we enjoyed the scenic lunch, before returning to the hotel and heading for another highlight of the trip, a sunset dinner at Jimbiran Beach, all washed down with the world famous egg toss game.

Unfortunately, Sunday came too early, and with a last minute trip to Kuta beach, lunch and shopping at Ubud, our memorable holiday was complete. A huge thank you to all participants for ensuring that our Bali field trips remain a highlight on our field trip calendar.

On 3rd and 4th of February 2012, PYP teachers had the wonderful opportunity to attend the IBAP PYP in school workshop on transdisciplinary teaching and learning. Our workshop leader Ms. Helen Morchel stressed upon transdisciplinary learning which means collaborative teaching and learning under one theme. She even told us that all the disciplines must work collaboratively under one common theme.

PYP Transdisciplinary Teaching and

Learning Workshop

The IB Asia Pacific In-School Workshop by Ms Kim Edwards

Continuous and Constant learning leads to persistent productive and critically appreciated creativity. This truth was further embedded into a group of 25 teachers who attended the IB Asia Pacific In-School Workshop on 27th and 28th of

January 2012. The workshop leader Ms Kim Edwards stressed on the need of constructivism in MYP during planning and implementation. She holds the post of a Deputy Principal at Presbyterian Ladies College in Western Australia, she has presented at national and international conferences in Australia, India and Singapore. Kim’s main stress was on how the concept based teaching could act as the foundation for fulfilling the various requirements of IBMYP. The smallest of dreams need the most detailed planning to be fulfilled. The Workshop was highly informative and enriching as it helped in devising unit plans where theory was being put into practice. The unit planning exercises within a department and across the disciplines helped the teachers to master the skills of planning not just our subject unit plans but also the interdisciplinary units. The importance of concepts in planning was already known to us all but how it could become a main connection for all the content was very enlightening. The importance of AOIs as the guiding light for the unit and the manner in which it helped the inquiry cycle was not just preached about but also practiced in different forms.Kim did touch a little bit upon the manner in which assessments were to be made and assessed. The idea about streamlining the task specific rubrics was highly appreciated as almost everybody was excited to know how effective it could be. Kim and her talk also brought to light the highly anticipated evaluation visit. She was helpful in making the attendees understand the requirements and expectations of the evaluators. The workshop created a desire for excellence in all of us.Over all it was a very fruitful workshop indeed.

Shalini Sharma

On the first day of the workshop, her focus was on conceptual understanding and concept based questions in our curriculum. We had hands on experience of framing conceptual questions. She encouraged group work and collaborative learning. We had the opportunity to learn different techniques of forming groups and work together and learn from each other.Next day we started talking about enduring understanding and how it promotes thinking. In groups we worked to review our central ideas and planners. According to her the central idea should be global, transferable,

relevant, engaging, promote inquiry and one which can be studied at any age and time.We are thankful to our principal Mr. A.P. Singh for giving us an opportunity to attend such a wonderful workshop which helped us to gain a further indepth understanding of transdisciplinary teaching and learning.Ms. Rekha

MYP Category III Workshop:

Contextual Teaching and Learning and the Areas of InteractionGMIS Jakarta conducted a two-day MYP Category III workshop on Areas of Interaction at its Seminar Room on February 24 and 25, 2012. Mr Stuart Chisholm, the Assistant Principal and Head of Curriculum at Sekolah Ciputra in Surabaya was the presenter of the workshop. He brought with him nineteen years of teaching experience, seven of these as an MYP Coordinator or Regional Workshop Leader.Twenty-five teachers were deputed by the MYP office to undergo the workshop. Their varied range of MYP exposure was taken into account by Mr Chisholm right from the beginning. The grouping of the teachers was so done that each group of five teachers had the proper mix of a range of experience. The workshop involved lectures on fundamental concepts about AOI, group activities to understand what the AOIs are and how they can be implemented in school. The major focus of the discussion was Contextual Teaching and learning, in relation to

AOI, and how meaning emerges from the relationship between Concept, Content and Context. Special emphasis was laid on the Inquiry Cycle – involving Understanding and Awareness, Reflection and Action.

“ Let the paint on your face celebrate the reflection of knowledge from pages to stage”.

8thof February, 2012 was the day when the Michael Angelos of the MYP were all set to do wonders with ideas in their mind, colours on their brushes & enthusiasm in their hearts. The programme started with the Power Point on “ Celebrating Life”, made by Mr. Subah. The themes for Grades 6, 7 & 8 were “Climate , butterflies, scripts of languages, national flags and symbols of Peace”. The MYP students came up with unique & original ideas which they painted on the faces of the models. The Emcees Kyung Yeon, Ikhtiar, Mita, Asna , Kenneth and Nicholas were smartly dressed for the occasion, they performed their jobs brilliantly and held the show together. It was rightly said by one of the emcees that when we get out of our comfort zones then we experience & learn so many new things. The MYP teachers got inspired by colours all around & decided to be true risk takers. They performed a choreography titled “Hope”. Mr David left all of us mesmerised with his song. The fresh and new perspective on Valentines Day celebration brought the show to an end.The Principal Mr. A. P. Singh applauded the efforts of the students and the teachers for presenting a show worth remembering for a long time.

Without further ado, the action began with Grade 6’s, who although new to the concept, gave both spirited and energetic displays. Between Grade 6 and 7 performances, Mr. Anton and team gave a breathtaking Tae Kwan Do display, accompanied by Mr. George’s rendition of Kung Fu Fighting! Garde 7’s gave colorful and acrobatic displays enshrined with enthusiasm. However, the finale of grade 8’s performances matched their seniority with well choreographed and intense displays of the art of cheerleading. Well done to all participants for a marvelous day.

‘Love knows No Boundaries’ was once rightly said. Along these very lines is the story of the two star crossed lovers, the eternal, ’Romeo and Juliet’ written by William Shakespeare. On the 13th of March 2012 in the GMIS auditorium, the Grade 9’s brought to life this timeless tragic love story filled with grief and sorrow, hope and love. After over a month of rehearsals, countless hours of hard work, designing of beautiful period costumes and crafting a mesmerizing set, the play came to an end with a huge round of applause from the parents, friends and members of the enthralled audience. In the reflection session at the end of each rehearsal, the members of the cast, some of whom were first time actors and a few who are seasoned actors that had blossomed on the GMIS stage earlier, critiqued each other in order to draw out the best from every actor. The entire exercise not only educated and engaged but also transformed students into mature and confident individuals. This epic production could not have been possible without the dedication and devotion of the entire team including the crew which provides vital support to the cast. Each year, the students of the Gandhi Memorial International School embrace a cause and in order to raise funds for it, produce a play. The proceeds from the grade 9 theatre production went to Yayasan Makna Bakti and a needy person. In his remarks, the principal A. P. Singh commended the grade 9 students for their brilliant interpretation of the classic tragedy, eloquent dialogue delivery, powerful histrionics and collaborative effort. Simran Kumar - 9D

Myp c&s activityGrade 6 organized C&S stall from 1st to 6th February, 2012 with the objective to raise fund and help the school SDN PINGKU-03 Bogor. GMIS MYP has adopted this school since three years ago and has been helping this school with technological support, stationery, study materials, etc. Grade 6 was blessed with this opportunity to help the orphans studying there.

We, the students were given the chance to choose our own group members to organise the stalls and we were excited and happy to work in groups. Together with the teachers worked hard and generated a pretty

good amount. All the stalls were a great success.

Anyways, it was a very hard job, but we learned lots of things from it. We learned about team work, honesty, and most importantly, we could feel how parents work hard to earn money. From this activity, we realized that we shouldn’t waste money on things we don’t really require and that we should donate more with that money.

Exhibitions are the best way to measure learning because they put the kids right in the midst of their learning” – Dennis LittkyThis year proved significant for us PYP Students as putting up an Exhibition of our learning was introduced for the first time in our curriculum. Exhibition is a medium through which each student demonstrates his or her ability to reflect and take action in a meaningful way.On the 9th of March 2012, we the Grade 3 students were engaged in responsible action reflecting our knowledge on the various subjects.Through our creative and critical thinking skills, we portrayed our knowledge in the form of posters, projects, puppet show, power point presentations etc. The process was quite demanding for our little nurturing minds but the challenge was successfully achieved under the guidance of our teachers and parents. Each of my fellow friends worked hard and put up individual and group projects. We enthusiastically shared our knowledge with our respected Principal and Vice-principal .The pride and joy in the eyes of our PYP Coordinators ,teachers, beloved parents & students of other grades as we displayed our understanding of various topics was a pleasure to see.In the process of this Exhibition we applied the important IB Learner Profile of being Creative & displayed Critical Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Organisational & Time Management Skills & Social Skills .We eagerly look forward to this event in the next academic year.Anushka Daruka
