allows completion of a residency at a civilian institution
time is neutral for payback Members gain time towards pay (i.e.
longevity) and promotion, but not retirement Members are paid by the civilian institution No active duty benefits Apply through ERAS and MODS
Traditionally, students were selected for the PGY-1 year of training (internship) only and then reapplied for continuation in PGY2
Many students will now be offered ‘continuous contracts’ for the entire length of residency training. Varies by service
Students who accept the ‘continuous contract’ will not need to reapply for PGY-2 training.
MUST successfully complete Step 1, 2CK and 2CS by 15 February 2017
If NOT, you will be given a 1 year contract only – even if initially selected for continuous training.
SO: ◦ schedule Step 2 CK and CS early◦ Prepare for BOTH thoughtfully

Your MSPE will have the overall statement of preclerkship performance and comments and grade from each clerkship
There will be no statement about ranking or quartile of the class in which a student sits
This will be stated explicitly in Appendix E
Take a diagnostic exam and heed results◦ Please speak with OSA if you are concerned At risk signs: Step 1 Shelf exam scores (esp. medicine)
Passing score raised yearly for past few years…currently 209
OSA may recommend a study block or a formal preparatory course if you are at risk

If you are unsure, rotate at your top choice site for each of the two specialties
It’s OK to make a short visit or to interview on the phone at your 3rd and 4th choice site
Rounds 1-3 can be used to “re-try” specialties before interviewing
Program directors place a lot of emphasis on your rotation with them◦ Motivation/Aptitude for the specialty◦ Motivation for the program Teamwork Enthusiasm Responsibility
