5PRE-APPLICATION TEST (GMAT & TOEFL GUIDES) Compiled by Rezzen (M) Sdn Bhd

1. The GMAT

A lot of people get a little nervous before taking tests, but the Graduate Management

Admission Test® (GMAT®) is one examination you don’t want to put off.

1.1 Introduction

The GMAT exam is a standardized assessment, delivered in English, that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management.

By taking the GMAT exam, you have a better chance of being targeted  by

business schools that are a good match for you—and learning more about their programs and admissions processes. You can help them find you by creating an

mba.com profile and opting in to being contacted by schools. Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA

program or in other graduate management programs.

1.2 How much does it cost to take the GMAT® exam?

The cost to take the GMAT exam is US$250 @ MYR841.75 globally.

1.3 Where can I take the GMAT® exam?

The GMAT exam is delivered in testing centers around the world.

1.4 What schools use GMAT® scores?

Over 1900 graduate business schools around the world use GMAT scores as a part of their admissions process.

1.5 How can I prepare to take the GMAT® exam?

The Graduate Management Admission Council® provides free test  preparation

software and preparation materials to purchase as well as suggestions about how to prepare for the exam.

1.6 Preparation is Everything

Most GMAT test takers start preparing about 3 to 6 months before the actual testdate. Think about how you can best prepare, given your discipline, motivation, and personal preference:

  Self study

  One-on-one tutoring

  Study groups

  Prep courses

1.7 What does the GMAT® exam measure?

The GMAT exam measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writingskills that you have developed in your education and work. It does NOT measure:

  your knowledge of business,

  your job skills,

specific content in your undergraduate or first university course work,

your abilities in any other specific subject area, or

subjective qualities—such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonalskills.

1.8 How long are GMAT® scores valid?

Your GMAT score is valid for five years, so you have the flexibility of “bankingit”—choosing to start your graduate studies right after university or later on.Remember, if at first you don’t succeed, you can take the GMAT exam again.

Remember, though, that all of your GMAT scores from the past 5 years will

appear on your Official Score Report.

2. Test Structure and Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) consists of four separately timed

sections.

2.1 Format and Timing

The GMAT exam consists of three main parts, the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section.

You have three and a half hours in which to take the GMAT exam, but plan for a

total time of approximately four hours.

2.2 Analytical Writing Assessment

The GMAT exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). TheAWA consists of two separate writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis ofan Argument. You are allowed 30 minutes to complete each one.

2.3 Quanti tative Section

Following an optional break, you then begin with the Quantitative Section of theGMAT exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two questiontypes—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You are allowed a maximum of

75 minutes to complete the entire section.

2.4 Verbal Section

After completion of the Quantitative Section (following an optional break), you begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT exam. This section contains 41 multiplechoice questions of three question t ypes—Reading Comprehension, CriticalReasoning, and Sentence Correction. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to

complete the entire section.

2.5 Compu ter-Adaptive Format

Each of the first two sections consists of an analytical writing task; the remainingtwo sections (Quantitative and Verbal) consist of multiple-choice questions

delivered in a computer-adaptive format. Questions in these sections aredynamically selected as you take the test; the multiple-choice questions willadjust to your ability level, and your test will be unique.

2.6 How does it work?

For each multiple-choice section of the GMAT exam, there is a large pool of

potential questions ranging from a low to high level of difficulty. Each section ofthe test starts with a question of moderate difficulty. If you answer the firstquestion correctly, the computer will usually give you a harder question. If youanswer the first question incorrectly, your next question will be easier. This

process will continue until you complete the section, at which point the computerwill have an accurate assessment of your ability level in that subject area.

Page 8: GMAT TOEFL 2010

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/gmat-toefl-2010 8/22

8PRE-APPLICATION TEST (GMAT & TOEFL GUIDES) Compiled by Rezzen (M) Sdn Bhd

In a computer-adaptive test, only one question at a time is presented. Because the

computer scores each question before selecting the next one, you may not skip,

return to, or change your responses to previous questions.

2.7 What If I make a mis take or guess?

If you answer a question incorrectl y by mistake or correctly by randomlyguessing, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questionsthat are at the appropriate level of difficulty for you.

Random guessing can significantly lower your scores. So, if you do not know theanswer to a question, you should try to eliminate as many answer choices as

possible and then select the answer you think is best. For more testing strategies,

see Test-Taking Strategies.

2.8 What if I do not finish?

Pacing is critical, as there is a severe penalty for not completing. Both the timeand number of questions that remain in the section are displayed on the screenduring the exam. There are 37 Quantitative questions and 41 Verbal questions. If a

question is too time-consuming or if you don’t know the answer, make aneducated guess by first eliminating the answers you know to be wrong.

2.9 How is my score determined?

Your score is determined by:

the number of questions you answer,

whether you answer the questions correctly or incorrectly, and

the level of difficult y and other statistical characteristics of each question.

The questions in an adaptive test are weighted according to their difficulty and  other statistical properties, not according to their position in the test.

2.10 Are all questions counted?

Every test contains trial multiple-choice questions being pretested for use in a realexam. These questions are not identified and appear in different locations within

the test. You should, therefore, do your best on all questions. Answers to trialquestions are not counted in the scoring of your test.

6.1.7 How Test Questions Are Created

Language specialists prepare TOEFL test questions and follow rigorous, standardized procedures to ensure that test material is of consistent high

quality. Each question is reviewed by several ETS staff members. TheTOEFL Committee of Examiners — an independent group of

professionals in the fields of linguistics, language testing and language

teaching that reports to the TOEFL Board — establishes guidelines fortest content.

After test questions have been reviewed and revised, they areadministered in trial situations and assembled into tests. Tests are

reviewed according to ETS and TOEFL program procedures to ensure

that all tests are free of cultural bias. Statistical analyses of individualquestions ensure that all items provide appropriate measurement

information.
