The Exam

GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) opens doors to the world’s best management programs. The exam is owned by MBA.com, and offered to MBA aspirants across the world throughout the year. The test is Computer Adaptive, and is administered over four sections in a total of 210 minutes of testing time.

Test Structure:

The test consists of four sections as follows:

• Analytical Writing Assessment (Duration – 30 minutes): The test taker has to write a critique of an argument presented in the test. Test taker needs to identify flaws, if any, in the argument; and assess the validity of the argument in the light of the flaws thus identified. The essay is evaluated on a scale of 6.0 in increment of 0.5, and the score is reported separately to the B-Schools, i.e. it does not form part of score out of 800. A few B-Schools require you to score 4.0 or 4.5 minimum in this section.

• Integrated Reasoning (12 Questions, 30 Minutes): The test taker is presented with 12 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. The section is not computer adaptive. The questions require test taker to correlate information from diverse sources and take judgment based on all the implications. The data may be given in multiple forms – Descriptive Data in a passage or narration, Tabulated information, and/or graphs and chart. Score of this section too is reported separately to the B-Schools.

• Quantitative Aptitude (37 Questions, 75 Minutes): The questions range from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry to Word Problems. There are normally 19 questions on Problem Solving with 5 options to each question, and 18 questions on Data Sufficiency. The section is computer adaptive, and the test adjusts itself to the competency of the test taker. The section is scored on a scaled score of 60.

• Verbal Ability (41 Questions, 75 Minutes): The questions in this section are presented on three different structures – Sentence Correction: 17 Questions, Critical Reasoning: 12 Questions, Reading Comprehension: 12 Questions based on 3 passages. The section is computer adaptive. The section is scored on a scaled score of 60.

The Preparation GMAT examination is very analytical in nature. Since the test is computer

adaptive, the test taker is presented a more difficult question if (s)he

attempts a question correctly, and similarly, if the test taker marks a

question incorrectly, (s)he is presented an easier question.

Thus, the test starts with the assumption that the test taker is likely to score

the median score of 500; and adjusts itself according to the students’

performance during the test.

In Quantitative Ability section, one needs to have an understanding of

the concepts and their application in all their possibilities. This not only

requires a good deal of understanding of the concepts, but also intensive

practice of varied applications.

Similarly in Verbal section, one needs to be thorough with the grammar

rules and concepts, and command highly analytical and critical reading

skills. While previous reading habits and an overall comfort with language

and mathematics is of great help; the exam does reward the person who

puts in a focussed effort in the right direction.
