Backed by the Welsh Assembly Government,we play a key role in the North Wales ClinicalSchool along with the Wales College ofMedicine at Cardiff University, the Betsi

Cadwaladr University Health Board, BangorUniversity and primary care deliverers innorth Wales. The School helps train doctorsin Wales and provides an outstandingresidential, teaching and library facility formedical students.

Glyndwr University is investing £2 millionin a Centre for the Child, Family and Society,to be opened in early 2011. Based on an

integrated approach to child development,the Centre will include a wide variety ofspecialisms relating to children, includinghealth, nutrition, child psychology, exercise andeducation. The new building itself has facilitiesfor babies, toddlers and pre-school childrenincluding inside and outside play areas, sleeprooms, and a sensory room as well as seminarand observation rooms.

Our health and sports science studentshave access to one of the best facilitiesaround, in the Human PerformanceLaboratory. Recently refurbished, it is filledwith specialist equipment to aid students’learning. Among these are highly advancedcardiovascular analysis equipment and 3Dmotion analysis instruments for studyingphysiology and biomechanics. This issupported by our modern Sports Centrewhich is home to the North Wales Regional

Hockey Stadium, a six badminton court-sizedsports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, and anAstroturf pitch.

Our eight-bed Chinese Medicine Clinic is opento the public, as well as staff and students.While student practitioners deliver treatments,they are always closely supervised by qualifiedand experienced staff. Treatments such asAcupuncture, Moxabustion and Chinese Patent

Herbal Medicine are used to treat all sorts ofconditions, including back pain, weight loss,depression and insomnia.

At the Wrexham Maelor Hospital is theSimulation Suite, a facility utilised by ournursing and medical students. It allows forreal life situations to be set up and studentsto be observed at work through a live videolink-up from the suite. Next door, students

can observe their peers and lecturers andanalyse scenarios.

Dr Lynne Kennedy – Academic Leader for

Medicine and Health Sciences; Course

Director, Master of Public Health (MPH)

Lynne is Academic Leader for Medicine andHealth Sciences with responsibility for a rangeof undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Sheis Principal Lecturer in Public Health and Course

Director for the Master of Public Health (MPH)programme, which she developed and introducedin 2009.

Lynne teaches both quantitative and qualitativeresearch methods and health promotion researchand practice on the MPH course, OccupationalHealth and Environmental Health degree course;as well as Masters nursing courses.

During a distinguished academic career Lynne

has been instrumental in establishing strategictask forces to tackle public health issues and haspublished and lectured extensively.

She is on the European Training Consortiumfor Public Health & Health Promotion, advisesthe Welsh Assembly on public health training,and is a member of Wrexham’s public healthcommissioning group, the ‘Healthy Eating &Being More Active’ strategic group and

local research committees.

Professor Christopher Alan Lewis -

Professor Lewis is a Chartered HealthPsychologist and a Fellow of the HigherEducation Academy.

Chris is editor of the international scientific journalMental Health, Religion and Culture and haspublished over 200 research articles. His researchand teaching interests include: psychology ofpeace, health psychology, conflict and violence,

positive psychology and the psychology of religion.

He has served on the General Assembly ofthe European Federation of ProfessionalPsychologists Associations (EFPA) and alsothe International Union of PsychologicalScience (IUPsyS).

Dr Sue Taylor - Senior Lecturer

in Exercise Physiology

Dr Sue Taylor is the Programme Leader forthe MRes in Sport and Exercise Science. Shecompleted a PhD in paediatric exercise science in2002, before taking up a two-year post-doctoralposition at Liverpool John Moores University

with the SportsLinx Project, which focused onchildhood obesity and fitness. She has continuedto research in this area whilst at GlyndwrUniversity with the F Factor Project which is run inconjunction with Denbighshire County Council.

Her applied experience is working with BritishSwimming, GB Canoe and Polo, and with athletesfrom a range of sports, including: triathlon, tennis,squash and cycling. She has also undertakenconsultancy with local authorities including an

intervention to increase physical activity in theworkplace, an evaluation of the GP referral systemand a study to investigate the health and fitnessof school children in Wrexham.

She has professional memberships of a numberof organizations including BASES (BritishAssociation of Sport & Exercise Sciences) andREACH (Research into Exercise, Activity andChildren’s Health).

Professor Rob Poole -

Professor of Mental Health

Rob Poole worked as a clinical psychiatrist for28 years before taking up his post at GlyndwrUniversity. He is a social psychiatrist who isinterested in disadvantaged populations. Hetrained at St George’s Hospital, London and

in Oxford.

From 1988 to 2004 he was a consultant in aseverely deprived part of Liverpool. Here he wasclosely involved in developing services such as theCriminal Justice Liaison Team and the HomelessOutreach Team. In 2004 he moved to a clinicalpost in rural north east Wales.

His research interests include the relationshipbetween substance misuse (especially alcohol)and mental illness, the care of people withintractable mental illness in the UK, prescribingpractice in psychiatry, the nature of therelationship between social inequality and severemental illness, and the relationship betweenmental illness and creativity.

In the past four years he has co-authored twobooks, which are concerned with clinical skills.With Robert Higgo he is working on a third text,

‘Mental Illness and Poverty’. He has recentlybecome a leading opponent of the integrationof spirituality into clinical practice.

Marie Roberts Davies -

Principal Lecturer in Health Studies

Marie manages a range of Health Studiescourses including post-qualifying programmesfor nurses, midwives, health visitors and otherhealthcare professionals.

A qualified health visitor, she has had roles

in clinical practice, research, education andinternational development.

During her career, Marie has led research intothe preparation of advanced practitioners andworked with the British Council in Bangladeshdeveloping nursing education.

She moved into education in the mid-80s and joined Glyndwr University five years ago.

She has overseen successful developmentsin specialist and advanced practice healthcarecourses and a range of postgraduate coursesfor professionals aspiring to management oreducation roles.

Professor Odette Parry - Director of

the Social Inclusion Research Unit

Odette has extensive experience in health andsocial care research. She has led major researchprojects here and overseas. These include aUNICEF funded project with the University of theWest Indies and research into health-related riskbehaviours for the University of Edinburgh.

She joined Glyndwr University in 2003 and herresearch interests combine health and education.Here, she headed the qualitative evaluation of theno-smoking legislation for the Welsh Assembly.She is interested in expanding on her researcharound this and other risky health behaviours,including alcohol misuse.

Charlotte Hilton - Lecturer,Master in Public Health

Charlotte’s career has spanned clinicalpsychology, community mental health and publichealth. She is a member of the MotivationalInterviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) andconsults as a practitioner and trainer.

Her main areas of research interest includephysical activity and health, behaviour changecounselling, quality of life assessments,psychometrics and motivational interviewing.

Charlotte was responsible for coordinating theevaluation of the national pilot of the Let’s GetMoving (LGM) physical activity care pathwaywhich was funded by the Department of Health(DH) and based in London. The LGM pathwayis currently being rolled out nationally. Whileworking with Gedling Primary Care Trust (PCT) in

Nottingham, Charlotte received several awards fordeveloping the city’s first exercise referral scheme.

The focus of Charlotte’s PhD was to develop anexercise-specific quality of life measure that willshortly be made available as an evaluation toolfor exercise and health practitioners workingacross the UK. The outputs of this researchalso highlighted the importance of incorporatingan MI approach to consultations with patientslooking to change their physical activity behaviourin the long term.

Pam Richards - Senior Lecturer

in Sports Coaching

Pam is an experienced international coach andhas many years of experience of integration oftheory to practice.

During the last 16 years Pam has gained valuableexperience working as an international coach in

the sport of hockey and has successfully gainedfive European titles as coach. Pam currently holdsthe position of national coach and FIH coach.

In addition to this Pam has provided Sport Sciencesupport to the Welsh National Women’s HockeySquad and prepared them for the CommonwealthGames in Malaysia in 1998 and Europeancompetitions in the role of physiologist.

Her research interests lie in the learning anddevelopment of performance intelligence andteam decision-making, an interest spawned fromher applied hockey coaching. In particular, Pamis interested in coaches’ abilities to facilitate andcreate an empowering environment to developperformance intelligence. This has specificallyresulted in the development of reflective practicestrategies with her performers; collectively thisrepresents Pam’s PhD research area.

Dr Alex Carson - Associate Dean for

Research and Enterprise and Academic 

Leader of Social and Community

Dr Alex Carson has worked in clinical andeducational posts in health for over thirty years.He is a registered nurse who worked for a numberof years in surgery, particularly vascular and headand neck surgery.

He completed his Masters degree at theUniversity of Stirling, undertaking 16 monthsfieldwork for his Ethnographic study of TeacherTraining. He completed his PhD in the Departmentof Sociology at the University of Edinburgh.

Although he has conducted a number of researchprojects using qualitative methods, he hasdeveloped his own particular methodology usingnarrative. He has published in peer reviewed

international publications and is currently writing abook on narrative methodology. He also chairs anInternational Conference on Narratives annually.

His research interests lie in ethics, linking theoryand practice, and narrative methodology.

Marjorie Lloyd - Senior Lecturer

in Mental Health Nursing

Marjorie has been working in and around mentalhealth nursing for the past 20 years. During thistime she has been a support worker, mentalhealth nurse and lecturer.

At the University she teaches in the areas of

social policy law and ethics, critical appreciationand research, interpersonal skills, and dementiacare. She is also currently writing up her PhD onService User Involvement in Mental Health Care, acontentious issue that she feels passionate aboutand which is becoming fascinating to explore.

Aside from this her general research interestslie in Narrative Methods, Critical Social Theory,Nursing and Service User Involvement.

She is a reviewer for the Nursing Standard Journal  and a member of the Mental Health ResearchNetwork Wales as well as a Member andFacilitator of the Learning and Teaching aboutMental Health in Wales Network.

One particular area of growth and development

in postgraduate training and research is inpublic health and, more recently, environmentalhealth and risk management. Research aroundthese areas is focused on improving the healthand well-being of the population, preventingdisease and minimising its consequences, andprolonging valued life and reducing inequalitiesin health.

Within this field Dr Lynne Kennedy, Reader

in Public Health, has published on a widerange of health related topics includingsocial inequalities in health, politics of health,diet and obesity prevention, healthy eating,food poverty and health promotion. Shehas been involved in several multi-centreresearch collaborations, both in Europeand the UK, for example: a joint projectevaluating the implementation of the WorldHealth Organisation (WHO) Healthy CitiesNetwork in Germany, a joint project with theUniversity of Liverpool to undertake a HealthImpact Assessment (HIA) of the EuropeanFood Safety Agency and a Department ofHealth funded project into the feasibility ofrandomised control trial of lay health trainersin primary care.

Charlotte Hilton has a background inpsychology and public health, with particularresearch interest in how exercise impacts on

quality of life including the areas of physicalactivity for health, motivational interviewing,and exercise referral.

There are several ongoing research projectsand a number of PhD students working onpublic health related topics including: obesityand young people; critical discourses onobesity; young people and health promotion;Salutogenic indicators for health promotion– focusing on well-being rather than disease –and health related research and evaluation.

One large scale project was an evaluationof the all Wales dietetics grant schemeundertaken on behalf of the WelshAssembly Government.

The Welsh Assembly Government launched itsFood and Fitness – Promoting Healthy Eating

and Physical Activity for Children and YoungPeople 5 Year Plan in 2006. As part of theimplementation of this plan a grant schemewas launched to increase dietetic capacity toinform and support communities in healthyeating. Our academics were asked to evaluateand assess the impact of the grant scheme.

Much research has also been undertaken tolook into the health and fitness of school-agedchildren, evaluating children’s diets and foodchoices and cardio-respiratory fitness andbody mass index.

Dr Alex Carson has a passionate interest inthe theme of the narrative practitioner whichexamines the use of narrative and storytellingin a range of contexts, including pedagogy,practice, research and performance. He is alsothe Chief Executive Editor of The InternationalJournal of Narrative Practice.

He has interest and has been published on thesubject of ethics and bridging the gap betweentheory and practice in health and social care.

Many of the academics in this area haveundertaken research into the impact of legal

and illegal highs, and prescription drugs.Areas researched include alcohol-involveddeath, polypharmacy and high dose prescribingregimes in the community, predictors of riskyalcohol consumption in school children andtheir implications for preventing alcohol-related harm.

Some of the research areas investigatedby our nursing team include school nursing,palliative care, living with heart failure,perceptions and experiences of taking oralglucose lowering agents, and diabetes.

Our mental health experts also have interests

in suicide risk assessment and self-harmawareness, alcohol-involved death, depression,schizophrenia, antipsychotics trials, anxietydisorders, and mental health services.

Our nursing team have been widely publishedin these areas including scientific andspecialist journals and as book chapters.

The team, collaboratively with a localhospice, recently achieved runner-up statusin a national palliative care award. This hasdeveloped a new research interest andresearch projects for the academic staff inthis field.

psychiatry 

Ethical psychiatry is one of the themesresearched at the University in this area.Psychiatric practice is often faced withcomplex situations that seem to pose seriousmoral dilemmas for practitioners. Methods forsolving these dilemmas have includedthe development of more objective rules to

guide the practitioner such as utilitarianismand deontology.

The research examines current approachesand suggests that a better model of ethical

 judgment could be developed through the useof narratives or stories. This idea puts equalvalue on the patient’s and the psychiatrist’sversion of the dilemma they are faced with. Ithas the potential to lead to a more genuineempathy and reflective decision-making.

Professor Rob Poole’s recent research hasbeen in postmodernism and psychiatry, clinicalskills in psychiatric treatment, polypharmacyand high-dose prescribing regimes in thecommunity, psychiatric interviewing andassessment and spirituality and the threat totherapeutic boundaries in psychiatric practice.

Applied psychological research is undertakenat the University in the areas of healthpsychology, social psychology, individualdifferences, and the psychology of religion.

Professor Christopher Lewis is a specialist inthe psychology of religion and has publishedwidely in this area, in particular on religion,

mental health and culture. In addition hehas undertaken research in the areas of

psychology of peace, conflict and violence,positive psychology, and individual differences.He is Co-Editor of the international journalMental Health, Religion and Culture and serveson the editorial board of the Journal of Beliefs

and Values.

Victoria Woodward specialises in the area ofaddiction psychology and chronic illness with a

focus on women and HIV. In addition she hasspecialised in equality and diversity, alcoholmisuse in young adults and adult counselling.She is also currently involved with motivationand educational psychology research.

Dr Emyr Williams is a specialist in thepsychology of religion, and is particularlyinterested in new and emerging forms ofreligion and spirituality. This research hasfocused on the prevalence of such formsof religion and spirituality in contemporarysociety, and their relationship with personalitytheory. He is also interested in the fieldsof social capital (from a psychologicalperspective) and the development ofpsychometric scales concerned withassessing religion and spirituality.

Sally-Ann Baker has an interest in serviceevaluation and health and lifestyle. She

has been involved in a number of projectsincluding evaluating nursing roles, and arange of health, community and school-basedinitiatives. She has been involved in projectssuch as the Welsh Assembly Government AllWales Dietetics Initiative, Caia Park HealthyLiving Centre, the Heart of Flintshire Project,CAIS, and the Wrexham Student AssistanceProgramme. She has an additional interestin research ethics, committed to increasingresearch capacity and is a member of BetsiCadwaladr University Health Board InternalReview Panel (Eastern division).

Criminological psychology and the delivery ofpsychology courses within 16-19 educationare the research interests of Fiona Lintern.She has held a number of senior examiningposts with national and internationalexamination boards and was involved in thedevelopment of the most recent OCR A-levelPsychology syllabus.

Phill de Prez has an interest in the socialinteractions of the individual within work placeenvironments. After several years of exploringthe complexities of stress in organisations,he has extended this work to encompassand focus on the individual’s perceptionof motivation in teams and especially thetemporal element of a team or a group’seffectiveness.

Some of the other themes currently beingresearched include stress, psychologicalwell-being and burnout at work; mentalhealth of young adults; beliefs and valuesof young people; health care and education;personality measurement and psychometrics;religious attitude, belief and behaviour; andresearch methods.

Dr Duncan Mascarenhas is an applied sportpsychology researcher interested in traininginterventions to improve team decision-making.With specific expertise in the performanceand training of elite sports officials, Duncanis currently researching elite football refereeswith colleagues in New Zealand and Germany.

Dr Tim Donovan is an applied physiologistspecialising in ergogenic aids and pacingstrategies in aerobic sports, predominantlyrowing but the principles have been appliedto athletics and cycling. In addition Tim isa qualified strength and conditioning coachwhich has opened up additional opportunitiesto investigate the use of ergogenic aids in thedevelopment of strength and power duringtraining and competition.

Differences in training behaviours inprofessional and amateur rugby union playersis one of Colin Hill’s research interests. Hehas collected data from coaches and playersabout their training behaviours in order todiscover which constructs, if any, are importantin training.

Sue Taylor’s principal area of research isobesity and the fitness of school-agedchildren but she still has a keen interest inthe applied physiology of elite athletes. Sue’scurrent study is investigating the health andfitness of school children.

After graduating from the University of Cumbriawith a Sports Science degree, Robin workedas a coach and trainer focussing on fitness forsport. His former tutors put his name forward forGlyndwr University’s F Factor project and he wasdelighted to be selected.

Funded by the National Lottery, the project isabout health and fitness for children, and is beingcarried out for Denbighshire County Council.

“It looks at fitness, exercise, and childhoodobesity,” Robin explains. “We’re focussing on theunder 12s and last year alone, we worked with1500 children. We created a health, physicalactivity and diet questionnaire for them as wellas fitness fun days.

“My thesis is about fitness and strength strategiesfor primary school children. I’ve created anintervention, which is being put into place atthe moment.

Gillian Cowan trained as an occupational therapistin 1982 before enjoying a 22 year career in theprofession. This included posts across the UK,from Mansfield to Huddersfield and latterly northWales. Since 2003, Gillian has been employed asa health and social care wellbeing and strategymanager for Wrexham Council. She joined theMasters in Public Health at Glyndwr Universityin September 2009.

“My current role involves a lot of work with publichealth issues and health promotion and I wantedto improve my knowledge and understandingof the area,” says Gillian. “I’ve seen the benefitsof studying for a Masters already. As well asproviding me with new knowledge, more thananything else it has given me the confidence andability to raise issues and question things when

I’m at work. The Masters will also give me theopportunity to research an area of public healthwhich is of personal interest. One of the topicsI’m considering for my dissertation is lookingat different ways of using mobile technology toaddress sexual health issues. I worked with thepolice during Christmas ‘09 on a project whichused Bluetooth to raise alcohol awarenessamong the general public. It was a great success,but generally I think mobile technologies areunderused in the field of public health so it’ssomething I’m keen to investigate further.”

Masters in Public Health student

Gillian took advantage of Glyndwr University’smembership of a European Masters Programmein Health Promotion by undertaking a two weeksummer school in Germany at the end of her firstyear of study.

The partnership, which operates with universitiesin Italy, Germany, Croatia and The Netherlands,among others, provided her with the opportunityto work trans-nationally on a public health projectrelevant to all European nations.

“The project looked at the issue of mentalhealth and how we could promote mental healthwell-being in a hospital environment. Recentresearch has shown that stress levels and mentalhealth problems in the workplace are increasing–but instead of taking time off sick, people are

continuing to go to work without ever functioningproperly when they are there. So, the projectlooked at how we as public health workers couldsupport people in their workplace environment toimprove their mental health. It was an interestingtopic to look at, made even more so by thefact that I was working with people from othercountries, learning how their public health systemswork and how they were different to what wehave in the UK.”
