Glycolic AcidGlycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is used to improve the overall health and appearance of skin and reverse the visible signs

of aging. It has been extensively studied and its benefits are clinically documented.

Glycolic acid reduces corneocyte cohesion and breaks up keratin plugs by dissolving the cellular cement that bonds skin cells together. This exfoliation process enhances cellular turnover to create a healthier, more compact stratum corneum. Glycolic acid also promotes collagen deposition and stimulates elastin production to improve firmness and boosts hyaluronic acid to increase hydration deep within the skin’s layers. Together, these actions minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and enhance the skin’s tone and texture resulting in a more radiant, youthful looking complexion.

Although glycolic acid is an extremely effective anti-aging treatment, it is very irritating to the skin in its raw form. Developers have struggled to find ways to provide the anti-aging benefits of glycolic acid without the attendant irritation. In the 1970’s, it was found that partially neutralizing glycolic acid with lesser amounts of bases including ammonium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide would make it more tolerable to the skin. When an acid (glycolic acid) and a base (ammonium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide) are combined, salt molecules are formed. Depending on the amount of base added, the resulting substance is a mix of raw glycolic acid and a specific amount of salt. The neutralized portion of the glycolic acid (the salt) helps increase tolerability but is rendered completely ineffective for purposes of skin rejuvenation.1 Most glycolic preparations are partially neutralized. However, partial neutralization by definition equals partial effectiveness.

Other glycolic products encapsulate the glycolic acid molecules to reduce irritation. These encapsulated molecules are sensitive to moisture and dissolve in water. The skin’s outer layers are relatively dry with water content increasing substantially in the deeper layers.2 This means that the encapsulated molecules work most effectively in the deeper layers of the dermis but do little to improve the appearance and texture of the stratum corneum, the dry, outermost

layers of the skin. A compact, well organized stratum corneum reflects more light giving the skin a healthier, more youthful appearance. Skin texture is more refined and skin tone is more even. Suppressing activity on the surface of the skin enhances tolerance but reduces the acid’s ability to exfoliate the outermost layers of a patient’s skin leaving it looking dull and feeling dry. Once again, not an optimal result.

Glycolic Esterification—A Better SolutionMarvin Klein, MD, a board certified dermatologist recognized the need for a tolerable glycolic acid that worked both on the surface of the skin and deep in the dermis. Thus began his journey to find a better method of minimizing glycolic acid’s irritation profile without reducing its efficacy. Dr. Klein discovered that esterification yielded a superior glycolic acid product by offering three key advantages: time-released delivery, full potency and low pH.

GlyDerm’s unique and proprietary esterification technology combines glycolic acid with citric alcohols resulting in the formation of glycolic esters instead of salts. Unlike salt molecules which are

very stable, esters are delicate and easily reversed by the skin’s own chemistry. However, the reversal of these delicate esters doesn’t occur all at once. Instead, it happens over time—time-released delivery—as the skin works to naturally restore itself to a normal pH balance. This results in a gentler delivery of fully potent glycolic acid that exfoliates the skin’s outermost layers and also penetrates deeply to stimulate collagen and elastin production as well as stimulating additional hyaluronic acid production. The result is noticeably brighter, plumper skin that looks and feels firmer, smoother and more supple.

GlyDerm Esterified Glycolic Acid Facial Applicators

Instructions for Use:

Ingredients: Water, Glycolic Acid, Citrus medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Extract.

Strength: 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%

Range: Superficial to superficial-medium

Suggested Number of Peels Per Series: 6 peels at intervals of 2 weeks apart.

Maximum Application Time: 3 minutes

Introduction:GlyDerm Glycolic Acid Facial Applicators are designed for in-office use by Physicians and licensed professionals as set forth in relevant state regulations. GlyDerm peels are safe, gentle and effective. They are available in ready-to-use, single-use packets, providing convenient and consistent application of esterified glycolic acid. GlyDerm peels range in strength from 20% to 70% glycolic acid, allowing Physicians to customize peel regimens to meet diverse skincare needs. Best results are achieved when complementing a GlyDerm peel with an at-home GlyDerm skincare regimen.

Suggested Use:GlyDerm suggests a series of 6 or more peels, usually 2 weeks apart starting with a 20% peel, until the desired results are achieved. Note that GlyDerm’s esterified glycolic acid is fully potent and has a very low pH in comparison to partially neutralized glycolic acid formulations. A lower strength GlyDerm peel may be stronger than a higher strength neutralized/buffered peel. Higher strengths may be used on subsequent visits depending on how the skin reacts. Not every patient will progress to a 70% peel. Very sensitive skin types may never move beyond 20% or 30%, while resilient skin types may progress quickly to higher concentrations. For best results, start patients on the GlyDerm home regimen two weeks prior to the peel.

Pre-Peel Instructions:

Analyze skin to determine suitability and to rule out contraindications. Review contraindications before each peel, even if a patient has previously had a peel without experiencing an adverse result. Obtain informed patient consent.

Contraindications:• Prior allergic reaction to glycolic acid or citrus

medica limonum (lemon) fruit extract.• Active bacterial, viral, fungal or herpetic

infections.• Active sunburn, windburn or open skin lesions.• Pre-existing inflammatory dermatoses such as

psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.• Accutane®/Isotretinoin use in the past year.• History of drugs with photosensitizing potential.• Patients undergoing oncological treatment.• Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.• Patients with compromised immune systems.• Any other medical conditions as determined by

the treating Physician.

One Week Prior to the Peel:Patients should avoid the following for 7 consecutive days before undergoing the peel:

• Retinols and/or retinoids, e.g., Differin®, Renova®, Retin-A®, Tazorac®, etc.

• Use of exfoliation, drying or peeling products on the area to be treated.

• Manual exfoliation on the area to be peeled, e.g., facial brush, facial scrub, etc.

• Waxing, depilatories, electrolysis or laser hair removal on the area to be peeled.

The Day of the Peel:Patients should avoid the following on the day of peel:

• Prolonged sun exposure.• Patients should not shave the area to be peeled

for 2 hours prior to the peel.

Note:Patients who have undergone cosmetic or medical procedures on the area to be peeled should wait until all skin sensitivity resolves before undergoing

a peel. Patients who have had cosmetic injections or fillers on the area to be peeled should wait until the complete effects of the procedures have manifested before undergoing a peel.

Instructions:Cleanse the face with GlyDerm Gentle Face Cleanser. Cleanse again, if necessary, to ensure removal of all creams or color cosmetics on the areas to be peeled. Degrease the skin with isopropyl alcohol using a soft cotton pledget.

Allow the skin to rest for 2 minutes. Tear open the facial applicator pouch —do not use scissors to open the pouch. Begin applying the glycolic acid at the periphery of the face and proceed toward the more central areas of the face, finishing around the eyes when the applicator is less wet. Do not apply on eyelids or directly above or under the eye. Avoid contact with the mucus membranes of the nose. In case of eye contact, flush with water for 10–15 minutes. A peel is usually left on the skin for 2–3 minutes, but never longer than 3 minutes.

Continually monitor the patient’s reaction during the procedure. Some patients may experience mild stinging, tingling, itching or burning. This is normal. Immediately rinse off the product if undue erythema or frosting occurs, or if more than mild patient discomfort is experienced. This is a rare occurrence. Undue erythema may be treated with a 1% hydrocortisone cream.

After the prescribed time, rinse the face with generous amounts of tepid water. Take care to rinse product from the nasal labial folds and other areas of the skin that have deep lines or wrinkles. Some mild erythema may persist for up to 60 minutes. GlyDerm peels may also be used on the décolleté, back, and top of hands following the instructions above.

Warning:

This product contains glycolic acid which is for external use only. Avoid eye contact. In the event of eye contact, rinse with generous amounts of tepid water.

Post-peel Instructions:GlyMist may be used immediately after the peel and during the next 3 hours as a cool, refreshing spray to relieve any feelings of skin dryness or tightness. Patients should avoid using color cosmetics and creams on the area that was peeled for 3 hours following the peel. Lipstick and eye make-up may be used. Patients should not use GlyDerm renewing (glycolic) products (or other exfoliating products) for 36 hours following the peel. It is suggested that patients begin using one of the GlyDerm Hydrotone products (hydrating, esterified glycolic-free) beginning 3 hours after the peel to moisturize the skin.

What to Expect Following a Peel:Depending on the strength of the peel administered, patients may experience:

• Tightness or redness which should resolve within 3 hours but may last up to 72 hours.

• Skin sensitivity for up to 72 hours.• Exfoliation (peeling and/or flaking) for up to 5

days. Not all patients will experience peeling or flaking. Peeling is not a prerequisite to skin rejuvenation. The Hydrotone products can be used to counteract exfoliation.

• Patients should contact their Physician if they experience any significant side effects or if mild side effects persist for more than 3–5 days.

If you are not satisfied, return merchandise inquiries can be directed to Customer Service at 1-877-545-9337 Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (EST) or submitted via e-mail at [email protected]

All items submitted for return must be accompanied with a RETURN FORM and RMA number, which will be faxed or e-mailed to you from Customer Service.

Reasons for Returned Products:

1. DAMAGED PRODUCTS:We will arrange for the pick-up of damaged merchandise at our expense. The Customer Service Department must be notified either by telephone or e-mail within 5 business days of the receipt of damaged goods.

2. WRONG ITEM SHIPPED:We will arrange for the pick-up of of items that have been shipped to you in error at our expense. The Customer Service Department must be notified either by telephone or e-mail within 5 business days of the receipt of goods shipped in error.

3. PATIENT/CUSTOMER RETURNS:Some patients experience products differently than others, more sensitive skin types often require 7–10 days to adjust to a new regimen. If the patient/customer is unhappy with the product for any reason, we will exchange it for another product.

Please Follow Our Return Process:

1) You must first contact Customer Service at 1-877-545-9337 or at e-mail [email protected] to receive a return form and RMA number. Kindly fill out the Return Form and enclose the original or a copy with your shipment.

2) Place the unused, unopened item(s) in a sealable bag (i.e. Ziploc bag). Make sure the package(s) is clearly marked with the RMA number. Packages without the RMA number will not be processed. (Please note that all parts, pieces and printed materials must be in their original packaging. Returned products not within these guidelines will be considered as non-returnable.)

3) Use a carrier of your choice to ship your return product(s). Customers are responsible for shipping fees for a return/exchange, except in the case of damaged goods.

Lautus Pharmaceuticals, LLC may elect to provide replacement product in lieu of credit. If you have any questions, please call 1-877-545-9337. A return credit and/or product exchange will be processed within 15 days of receipt of return. CREDIT WILL NOT BE ISSUED FOR YOUR SHIPPING CHARGES.

Lautus Pharmaceuticals, LLC reserves the right, prior to issuing credit or exchanging product, to inspect original purchase documents as proof that products requested for return were purchased directly from Lautus. Determination will be made by Lautus in its sole discretion. Products unacceptable for credit, i.e. non-returnable items, WILL NOT BE RETURNED TO THE CUSTOMER, AND WILL BE DESTROYED. Credit will not be issued for that merchandise.
