The 49th National and 18th International Conference of Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP) from March 1 to 3, 2014 organized by Smt L & C Mehta Arts College , was a great

success as gauged by the number of people in attendance and the enthusiasm of the conference. The theme of the conference “Psychology for Holistic Living in Global World” focused on several important premises like Career Preference of Adolescents, Role of Yoga for Emotional Wellbeing, Spirituality and Psychological Wellbeing, etc. The conference provided a perfect opportunity for anyone interested in learning about the various components of psychology and how it is changing the lives of individuals, communities, and institutions around the globe.

Pre-Conference Workshop, Symposium, Special Guest Lectures, Workshop, Presentations, and Poster Sessions featured leading-edge research, as well as applications of psychology in a variety of fields. Attendees had the opportunity to discuss the latest research, insights, and ideas, and interact with other people who focus on studying what is best in life and how to create more of it. This conference provided a valuable opportunity for psychology professionals from different cul-tural backgrounds and diverse fields to explore the global impact of psychology as a field of practice on community and individual mental health care.

The scientific sessions conducted confirm how the conference was as focussed as it was diverse. All paper presenters were clear in their desire to effect positive change for individuals and there were many views about how this might be done. While there are no magic solu-tions, the coming together, the discussion, and the collaboration that permeated this conference were certainly a source of hope and opti-mism about the future of helpful and effective services to human race- a holistic approach.

The picture gallery speaks on its own; yet it fails to really recog-nize the excitement and meaning surrounding the conference.

“No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.”

— Calvin Coolidge

The three day invigorating conference culminated with the vale-dictory function held at GLS Auditorium. Dr Dwarka Prasad, Retd. Prof. PGI, Chandigarh and Dr Kaliappan, Retd Prof. Dept.

Of Psychology University of Madras were the guests of honour. They both lauded the efforts of the college in organizing the conference which saw the highest participation of the delegates and the varieties of subjects included in the conference. The Vice-chancellor of Gujarat University Dr M. N. Patel in his address placed thrust on the need for holding such conferences. GLS VOICE RECOMMENDS…

Train to Pakistan

The film is set in Mano Majra which is a silent village on

the border of India and Pakistan, close to where the railway line crosses the Sutlej River. The film develops around the love affair of small-time dacoit Jagga (Nirmal Pandey), with a local Muslim girl, Nooran (Smriti Mishra). Mano Majra incidentally was the original title of the book upon its release in 1956. The villagers are a mix of Sikhs and Muslims, who live in harmony. The Sikhs own most of the land, and the Muslims

work as labourers. During the summer of 1947, when the Partition of India was taking place, the entire country was a hotbed for extremism and intolerance. The Muslims in India moved towards the newly formed Pakistan, and the Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan migrated to refugee camps in India. One day, a train arrives from Pakistan, which carries bodies of all the travellers who have been butchered while they tried to depart from Pakistan. That is when this quiet village is changed forever.

The film was one of most anticipated adaptations of its time, especially being writer Khushwant Singh’s most

acclaimed work. The film was produced

by Channel Four Film and (NFDC), and Production Company was K a l e i d o s c o p e Entertainment. The shooting began nearly fifty years after the actual partition of India in 1947. Though many villages of Punjab resembled, the Punjab of fifty years prior, Muslim pockets were missing now, hence a couple of villages on the fringes of Punjab were used to give a combined look of Mano Majra, the village near the Indo-Pak border, where the novel was set. Pamela used her background in documentary film making to shoot certain parts of the

film live, in scenes like that of religious ceremony at a temple.

The film was released in the United States, Sri Lanka and in the UK, and also shown in several international film festivals, including, Zanzibar International Film Festival, 1998, World Film Festival National Films from South Festival Denmark, 1998, Beirut International Film Festival, 1998, Fiminale International Film Festival, Konl Germany, 1998, Soria Mora Film Festival, Oslo, 1998, and Indian Film Week in Hong Kong, 2000. Besides critical acclaim, it was also nominated for Best Film at the 1999 Cinequest Film Festival.

BOOKTHE SUNSET CLUB

By Khushwant Singh

By Dr. Kavita Patel

The Sunset Club is yet another frank and honest offering from Khushwant

Singh, a tale of life-lived and loved at one’s own terms. It is the tale of three members of the Sunset Club, namely Pandit Preetam Sharma, Sardar Boota Singh, and Nawab Barkatullah Baig. The trio have been a part of Sunset Club and friends for more than four decades. They are now above 80 years of age and gather at the sunset, sit together on a burra binch facing the monument in the Lodhi Gardens. They exchange

pleasantries and conversations talking about various topics. The book is beautifully organized into thirteen chapters; with each of the twelve months of the year having a chapter to itself. Set in picturesque Delhi, the novel traces the life of three octogenarians starting from Ganatantra Divas 2009 to Ganatantra Divas 2010. Khushwant Singh portrays all his characters vibrant in life, takes the readers through the happenings of the country in general ; describes the 12 months of the year (all twelve months are portrayed with their distinctive nature), Delhi with all its poetic uniqueness. The flow of stories between the Pandit, the Nawab and the Sardar beautifully evokes the

many moods of Delhi in different seasons during different phases of each protagonist’s life.

The Sunset Club is a telling commentary on an ever changing India seen through the eyes of the elderly. The book is also a touching though bold to celebrate the experiences of being human; of the frailties of old age and lot many more things. Each protagonist is fleshed out with minute and sensitive detailing in terms of their appearance as well as their ideological standpoints. All the three character take the reader on a rollercoaster ride filled with laughter and silence as the everyday ordinary conversations provide an

expose of faith and doubt, pathos and merriment. The narrative technique used provides a bare critique of the society.

Khushwant Singh etches

out the emotional states and physical realities of the three friends in tones that range from the lyrical to the crass given the very different personalities of each character. Singh’s depiction of the changes in Delhi, especially his portrait of the seasons with detailed observations of the weather, flora and fauna is a poetic highpoint of the text. The plot is spare and simply told, yet rich with metaphors and insights into our own selves, I can only sum this book up in one line : What it stands for is a life, and how that life has been lived.

440 Restaurant By Bimal Solanki

Generally the restaurants mushrooming in the city lately are a theme based

joints. But here we come across 440 restaurants and Banquets which is neither of the above two yet Simple and Classy . 440 is a place were you can have that cosy family and friends moments. Situated on the top floor of Acropolis mall 440 serves pure veg multi cuisine .

The decor is not flashy but simple and subtle and one part of the eatery is exclusively for banquets were small parties and wedding receptions could be arranged . When we visited we tried out vegetable lollipop , nizami bharwan alu and palak chilly As starters and we enjoyed every bite of it .

All the delicacies were very interestingly presented and tasted perfect . This is a good place to be for Punjabi and Chinese food enthusiasts but the continental spreads in the menu dint impress any one of us .

In a nutshell 440 is a good mid ranged budget eatery with simple yet good food and not flashy still classy decor .

GLSICT (MCA)

By Pooja Ajwani

It is truly said by Nikki Giovanni, an American writer, commentator, activist,

and educator : A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you’re in and take advantage of it.

Keeping this thought in mind, GLSICT organized a get-together for their Alumni students on 8th March, 2014. This was just to provide a platform where Alumni can share their experiences of exploring the new world with other students. As the eve started all alumni recalling their golden time spent in this organization. This feel was expressed by the alumni student Mr. Mayank Modi, Group Tech-Lead, Argusoft India Ltd. He brought back quite a lot of memories as he thank faculties of GLSICT for building up his career and also help him in and every respect as when he requires. Followed by this another alumni of GLSICT Mr. Anand Patel, Jr.

Software Engineer, Elitecore Technologies Pvt. Ltd. He guided as well as motivated his juniors for building up their career through exploration and by grasping new opportunities.

To entertain and greet the alumni, ANNUAL cultural festival- CULFEST 2014 was also organized by GLSICT. Students of sem IV and sem II took active participation in the events like Fashion show, Dance,Singing, Skit and photography. The themes of the Fashion show were “Colors of India” in which different culture of different states were shown and the second one was “Women Empowerment” in which how a woman can contribute to the external world was shown. An

artist removes all the hurdles from his path, this was proved by sem VI students who spared their valuable time from Industry and performed for their seniors.

This was followed by the prize distribution ceremony and thanks giving speech by the alumni students as well as by the faculty members. They also appreciated performances given by their juniors. Then they enjoyed delicious dinner.

Last but not the least they enjoyed with the faculties by putting forward their feet on the dance floor ie they enjoy dancing on the DJ floor with friends, faculty members and their juniors.

It was around 3 pm in the afternoon on 20th March 2014, when my facebook

notification beeped and I got a message from my friend that Khushwant Singh passed away. The Khushwant Singh, whose novels we studied as students and whose stories we taught as teachers. I gave the news in the staff room, still staring at my phone screen, and when I looked up, I found one of my staff members really upset. Well, he was old. I tried to justify Singh’s death. But when I actually sat and thought about it, I realized that this, indeed, is a huge loss to not only literature, but also to politics, journalism and above all, humanity. He certainly held a peculiar place in Indian life as a writer, journalist, lawyer and

a politician. He could be all this, and still remain witty and humorous. As one of the critics wrote in his obituary to Singh that ‘Singh will be telling jokes in heaven now!’.

Singh was one of the few people who experienced the pre-partition and post partition situations of both the countries.

His Train to Pakistan tells the moving story of the journey from one side of India to another side of the then India. His pen was certainly mightier than the sword, as he very clearly penned down his views in his novels, stories or political writings. As he says in Train to Pakistan, “Freedom is for the educated people who fought for it. We were slaves of the English, now we will be slaves of the educated Indians—or the Pakistanis.” or in his another novel Delhi, he states, “I realized that I belonged neither to the Hindus nor to the Mussalmans. How could I explain to my wife that while the Brahmins lived on offerings made to their gods, the Rajputs and the Jats had their lands, Aheers and the Gujars their cattle, the Banias their shops,

all that the poor Kayasthas had were their brains and their reed pens! And the only people who could pay for their brains and their pens were the rulers who were Muslims!”

Many people have paid him obituaries. But interestingly, Singh himself had done so some years back. In his book ‘The Absolute Khushwant: The lowdown on Life, Death and Inbetween’ Singh says – “ I don’t fear death. What I dread is the day I go blind or am incapacitated because of old age—that’s what I fear—I’d rather die than live in that condition.”. He was the person who had written his epitaph and the news item of his own death long before he actually died! He was not prepared for just death, he was prepared for the ‘celebration of death’. He

quotes Tennyson in his essay How to Live and Die,

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for meAnd may there be no

moaning of the bar,When I put out to sea... Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no

sadness or farewell, When I embark.”Death came to him as he

wished – gently, peacefully, as if fading away in slumber. But he is not someone who can fade away. There is certainly no farewell, sir. You live through your words, your books and you live in our hearts.
