Numbers 0°/60°

A touch screen control used to select a Doppler angle correction value while using a linear transducer for PW Doppler.

1st through 5th In the editable patient report, a selection that uses the measurement value in the numbered column.

2D A touch screen control used to start 2D imaging. Touching 2D displays the 2D touch screen, from which you can adjust 2D parameters.

2D Opt A touch screen control used to provide up to five settings that can be used to optimize 2D imaging. Two settings optimize for resolution (Res) or penetration (Pen). Three additional settings add Harmonic imaging to optimize for resolution (HRes), penetration (HPen), or general (HGen), which is a balance between resolution and penetration. To select a 2D optimization setting, turn the 2D Opt touch screen knob until the desired setting is displayed. The settings vary depending on the transducer and preset selected.

3D A touch screen control used to enable 3D standby for Live 3D Echo. The Live 3D option must be installed.

3D Box A control on the Image touch screen used to display a 3D box around the volume view.


3D Home A touch screen control used during 3D review to reset the orientation of the image views to their original orientations. This control does not affect cropping.

3D Swivel A touch screen control used to turn the 3D Swivel function on or off. When 3D Swivel is on, the 3D volume rotates continuously back-and-forth through a range of 50° on the vertical axis.

3D Vision A knob on the 3D Image Controls touch screen used to set the contrast, transparency, lighting, and compositing values of the volume image. The settings are A through E.

A Accept (View)

A control on the Protocol touch screen used to accept the loop just acquired during single loop acquisition.

Accept Selected A control on the Protocol touch screen used to store all loops that have been selected using Loop 1, 2, 3, or 4. Available only when Select Multiple has been selected.

Accept Stage A control on the Protocol touch screen used to store all loops for the specified stage.

Acquire A control on the touch screen and on the control panel used to capture an image for review. You can capture and save a single frame or a Cineloop sequence. The captured frame or Cineloop sequence is saved in the patient study, and a thumbnail of it is available in the Review display. In Full Volume BW or Full Volume Color mode, this control acquires the corresponding 3D data set starts 3D Review. If After Each Print/Acquire is selected for Send Images/Clips in Print/Network setups, images are automatically exported across the network when you press Acquire.


Acquire (View) A control on the Protocol touch screen used to begin acquisition of a loop or loops for the specified view.

Acquire Frame A touch screen control used to acquire the current frame of a displayed loop.

Acquire Loop A control on the Protocol touch screen used to acquire loops outside the protocol while the protocol is paused.

Acquire More Loops A control on the Protocol touch screen used to acquire additional loops for the current view.

Acquisition Type In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify whether the stages of the selected custom Stress Echo protocol are single-cycle or quad-cycle acquisition stages.

Activity Log In Data Security setups, an Admin Settings setup parameter used to clear the access log or copy it to a DVD.

Adaptive Doppler (1) A feature that reduces noise during Doppler acquisition.

(2) A touch screen control used to turn Adaptive Doppler on or off.

Add Device A dialog box used in the Print/Network setups to configure a new device for operation with the system. It is displayed when you click New Device (under Devices on the Global Config tab). In this dialog box, you select the type of device that you are configuring for DICOM operation with the system.

Adjust Markers A control on the PW touch screen used to select one or more heart cycles on the frozen spectral display for which to display High Q indices. The active (green) marker is moved using the trackball. Pressing Select switches trackball control between the two markers. The markers are not shown on the display if High Q cannot identify a suitable heart cycle.


Admin Settings In Data Security setups, a tab used to display settings for patient data access, automatic logoff, administrator password, activity log, and registered users.

Administrator Password In Data Security setups, an Admin Setting setup parameter used to change the system administrator password.

Adult Card In the Annotate setups, a tab used to display the adult cardiology annotation setups. You can assign existing annotations to the touch screen controls, and you can create your own annotations.

Adult Echo (1) A calculations package.

(2) A Report touch control that displays the beginning of the report that describes the Adult Echo results.

AE (Application Entity) Title (1) An arbitrary name, but a required field, for DICOM configuration. DICOM

communication occurs between two named application entities. An AE Title must be unique on that DICOM network.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Config setups into which you enter the AE Title.

AGC Automatic Gain Control. A touch screen control used to automatically set the gain for the image display.

Align A setting for Playback on the Protocol and Review touch screens used to synchronize the start and end time of two or more acquired loops. When multiple loops are running, set Playback to Align to align the loops. Shorter loops run at a slower speed so that all loops end simultaneously. The other settings are Free Run and Same Start.

Analysis A touch screen control that provides measurement and analysis tools for each of the calculations packages.


Analysis Config Analysis Configuration. A selection in the setups used to display a group of analysis setups used to create and configure collections, groups, measurements, and calculations.

Anatomical View In the Protocols setups, used to change the selected view in a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Annot A touch screen control used to display the Annot touch screen, from which you can select annotation to add to images. In the Annotate setups, you can assign existing annotations to the touch screen controls, and you can create your own annotations and add them to the touch screen.

Annotate In the setups, a group of setup parameters used to select annotation for each application.

Archive In the Print/Network setups, clicking Archive displays a list of archive servers from which you can select three archive servers.

Assign An Analysis touch control available with unlabeled measurement tools that allows you to assign the results to a label and to the report.

Asterisk (*) (1) In the Print/Network setups, an asterisk indicates a required field. A required

field must be filled in to ensure proper operation with the system.

(2) In the Analysis Config setups, user-defined labels in the master lists are marked with an asterisk.

ATA (1) Anterior tibial artery

(2) Advanced Troubleshooting Assistant, a troubleshooting aid for ultrasound equipment delivered through D.I.M.E. See also D.I.M.E.

ATV Anterior tibial vein

ATX Power SupplyA switching power supply with standardized, keyed connectors that draws only the power it needs from the AC line. Uses color-coded wires and industry standard connectors. Because it is a switched power supply, all voltages are verified or the power supply does not supply power to the system.

Audio/Video A setups selection used to display the Internal Microphone setup. You can set up the microphone so that it is turned on at power up.

Audio Volume A control used to adjust the audio volume of the system speakers.

Aug Augmentation

Auto Crop A control on the 3D touch screen used to suppresses 50% of the acquired image from the front plane. Auto Crop is available in Live 3D, 3D Zoom, and 3D Cine modes.


Auto Fit A touch screen control used in Panoramic Imaging to display the whole frozen Panoramic image at the maximum possible size, centered in the image display.

Auto Freeze In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to turn Auto Freeze on or off. Turning Auto Freeze on automatically invokes a freeze command, if a control is not manipulated within the Wait time you specify. After Auto Freeze has been invoked, press any control to restart imaging.

Auto Invert In System Settings, a Mode Settings setup parameter used to turn the auto inversion of the Doppler and Color displays on or off.

Auto Log Off In the Data Security setups, a User Settings parameter used to set the length of the period of inactivity before a user is automatically logged off the system.

Automatic DICOM Export xxxxxxA component of the Basic Connectivity purchasable option that allows you to automatically export DICOM images upon capture.

Aux 1 A Physio touch screen control used to display the Aux 1 Invert, Aux 1 Gain, and Aux 1 Position touch screen controls. This control is present only when the Channel 1 knob display is set to Aux 1.

Aux 1 Gain A Physio touch screen knob used to adjust the gain of the Aux 1 signal on the display. This control is present only when the Channel 1 knob is set to Aux 1 and Aux 1 is on.

Aux 1 Invert A Physio touch screen control used to invert the Aux 1 signal on the display. This control is present only in live imaging when the Channel 1 knob is set to Aux 1 and Aux 1 is on.

Aux 1 Position A Physio touch screen knob used to adjust the vertical position of the Aux 1 signal on the display. This control is present only when the Channel 1 knob is set to Aux 1 and Aux 1 is on.


Aux 2 A Physio touch screen control used to display the Aux 2 Invert, Aux 2 Gain, and Aux 2 Position touch screen controls. This control is present only when the Channel 2 knob display is set to Aux 2.

Aux 2 Gain A Physio touch screen knob used to adjust the gain of the Aux 2 signal on the display. This control is present only when the Channel 2 knob is set to Aux 2 and Aux 2 is on.

Aux 2 Invert A Physio touch screen control used to invert the Aux 2 signal on the display. This control is present only in live imaging when the Channel 2 knob is set to Aux 2 and Aux 2 is on.

Aux 2 Position A Physio touch screen knob used to adjust the vertical position of the Aux 2 signal on the display. This control is present only when the Channel 2 knob is set to Aux 2 and Aux 2 is on.

AV Audio-visual. Composed of both audio and video information.

Avg In the editable patient report, a selection that averages the values of up to five displayed measurements.

B B/W Suppress

A touch screen control used to hide grayscale image data during Color imaging.

Back to Review A control on the Patient Directory touch screen used to return to the Review display.

Backup An Analysis touch screen control that erases a small portion of a measurement trace. Repeatedly touching Backup removes some or all of the trace, including the initial caliper.


Baseline A touch screen control used to change the position of the zero baseline. The zero baseline represents zero velocity or frequency in the Doppler, Tissue Doppler Imaging, or Color display.

Basic Connectivity Option A system option that provides the ability to export data to network servers, as well as providing DICOM services such as worklist, performed procedure step, storage commit, and structured reporting.

Beats A knob on the Protocol touch screen used to set the loop length in heart beats. Turn clockwise to set the length of the loop from 1 to 20 cardiac cycles. Turn counter-clockwise to select the systole or diastole part of a cycle, rather than a complete heart cycle.

BIOSBIOS, in computing, stands for Basic Input/Output System or Basic Integrated Operating System. BIOS refers to the software code run by a computer when first powered on. The primary function of BIOS is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media (such as hard drives, floppies, and CDs) can load, execute, and assume control of the computer.

BIOS is sometimes called firmware because it is an integral part of the system hardware. Before 1990 or so BIOSes were held on ROM chips that could not be altered. As their complexity and the need for updates grew, BIOS firmware was stored on EEPROM or flash memory devices that can be easily upgraded by the user.

Blend A control on the Color, CPA, and TDI touch screens used to smooth the transitions between the color pixels of the Color display and the gray pixels of the 2D display. The result of this smoothing can be a decrease in edge and flash artifacts.

Blue Max A 3D Review touch screen knob used to move the Blue Max crop plane in the volume.


Blue Min A 3D Review touch screen knob used to move the Blue Min crop plane in the volume.

Body Marks A 3D Review touch screen control used to display the Body Marks touch screen, from which you position and display anatomical icons on the image.

BP Blood pressure

Bright A control on the right touch screen during 3D review used to change the brightness setting of the 3D volume image from 0 to 100%.

BUBusiness Unit

BW, B/W Black and white

C (c)

Appearing alongside a measurement label, this means that the measurement was calculated from another parameter, for example, EDD(c) is calculated from an LMP date.

CACompetent Authority

Caliper A control used to display a measurement caliper on the image.

Cancel Exam A control on the Patient Data form used to cancel an exam.

Cart(1) The physical components of the ultrasound machine, into which the electronic

components are installed.


(2) A major release of a system, when major hardware changes have been made to components or the way in which they are used. As in “A cart” or “D cart.”

Caution An icon displayed in a dialog box when there is an impending loss of data that must be acknowledged.

CCA Common carotid artery

Central Processing Unit (CPU)A central processing unit (CPU), or sometimes simply processor, is the component in a digital computer that interprets instructions and processes data contained in computer programs. CPUs provide the fundamental digital computer trait of programmability, and are one of the necessary components found in computers of any era, along with primary storage and input/output facilities.

Performs mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using floating point processors that can perform extremely sophisticated operations on large floating point numbers.

Channel 1 A Physio touch screen knob display used to select the source for physio display channel 1.

Channel 2 A Physio touch screen knob display used to select the source for physio display channel 2.


Chroma (1) A touch screen knob used to assign the Chroma function to the corresponding

touch screen knob below it. Use this knob to select a Chroma map or turn off the Chroma display. Five Chroma maps are available.

(2) A display that assigns color values to the gray map to accentuate certain echo intensities or ranges of intensities.

Cine Review A touch screen control used to enter the Cineloop review stage in pause mode. In this stage you can review all of the frames in a loop or a Panoramic image.

Cist Mag Cisterna magna

Clear Patient Data A control on the Patient Data form used to clear all patient data from the form.

Close A control on a display, such as the Review Exam display or the Patient Report display that closes the display.

Close Pat Dir A control on the Patient Directory touch screen used to exit the Review Exam display and return to the previous display.

Close Report A Report touch control that closes the patient report and returns the screen to its previous image.

Close Review A control on the Review touch screen used to exit Review mode and return to the previous mode.

Close Setup A control on the Setup touch screen used to exit setups and return to the previous mode.

Collection In analysis, a labeled collection of related measurements and groups of measurements.


Color A touch screen control used to turn Color imaging on or off.

Color Compare A touch screen control used to simultaneously display an image with and without Color data. When Color Compare is on, the screen contains two images: The right image shows Color data, and the left image shows only grayscale data.

Color Controls A touch screen control used to display a set of color controls that are useful in 3D acquisition. These controls are B/W Suppress, Color Suppress, Color Gain, Color Smoothing, 3D Vision, Baseline, and Filter.

Color Gain A touch screen knob used to adjust Color gain during Full Volume Color, Live xPlane Color, and Full Volume Color Review modes.

Color Map A touch screen control used to assign the color map function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. Use this knob to select and apply a color map to the Color display. The color scale on the image display is a visual representation of the color map. The color scale includes the Nyquist limits, the color baseline, the color wall filter, and a color-versus-echo write priority marker.

Color Opt Color optimization. A touch screen knob on the Color touch screen used to vary the balance between image quality (resolution) and penetration. Up to three settings are available; Low, Med, and High. To select a resolution/penetration setting, turn Color Opt clockwise to decrease penetration and increase resolution, or counterclockwise to increase penetration and decrease resolution. The default setting and the number of settings available are both dependent on the transducer and preset selected.

Color Smoothing A touch screen knob that is used to set the color smoothing applied to a 3D Color volume image.

Color Suppress A touch screen control used during Color imaging to temporarily hide the Color data from a live or frozen image.


Color Vision A touch screen knob that is used to set the contrast, transparency, lighting, and compositing values of the volume image in Full Volume Color Review mode.

Commit Setups In Print/Network setups, clicking Archive on the Device Selection tab displays a group of setups including the commit server and the target archive server.

Complex tool Any of several analysis measurement tools composed of two or more other tools for providing results that depend on several measurements.

Compress A control used to select a compression curve for the image display, which determines the dynamic range of the incoming signal. A higher compression curve softens the image; a lower compression curve produces a high-contrast image. Dynamic range is shown in the image info, expressed in decibels (dB). While in any 3D mode, the Compress setting affects 3D rendering.

Compression In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to select the compression type used to reduce the size of clip and image files.

Config/Test A group of setups that includes management of system settings and licensed options, system tests, and access to the Technical Administration option.

Copy to DVD In Config/Test setups, a control used to copy your System, Analysis Config, Annotate, and Print/Network settings, voice profiles, and Quick Save presets to a properly formatted DVD.

CPA Color Power Angio. A control used to start CPA imaging, when it is pressed, and to adjust CPA gain, when it is turned.

CPA Compare A control on the CPA touch screen used to simultaneously display an image with and without CPA data. When CPA Compare is on, the screen contains two images: The right image shows CPA data, and the left image shows only grayscale data.


CPA Map A control on the CPA touch screen that is used to select a color map for CPA imaging. Six CPA color maps are available.

CPA Opt Color Power Angio optimization. A touch screen knob on the CPA touch screen used to vary the balance between image quality (resolution) and penetration. Up to three settings are available; Low, Med, and High. To select a resolution/penetration setting, turn CPA Opt clockwise to decrease penetration and increase resolution, or counterclockwise to increase penetration and decrease resolution. The default setting and the number of settings available are both dependent on the transducer and preset selected.

CPA Suppress A control on the CPA touch screen used during CPA imaging to temporarily hide the CPA data from a live or frozen image.

Create Subpage A 3D touch screen control used to save the current 3D data set. This is done by creating a new subpage of the acquired 3D image using the current settings. These settings include rotation, cropping, lighting, smoothing, magnification, gain, compression, 3D vision, and colorization.

Crop Adjust A 3D Review touch screen knob used to select the crop mode. Available settings are Plane, Box, and Off. Cropping allows you to a remove part of the volume that is obscuring the object you want to see. Selecting Plane or Box displays additional touch screen controls used in cropping.

Current Exam A control on the Review Exam display that is used to list the stored images for the active exam.

Cursor Angle A touch screen knob used to adjust the Doppler angle. During Doppler acquisition, the blood flow may not be directly toward or away from the transducer, resulting in an angle between the ultrasound beam and the blood flow. To ensure accurate display of blood flow velocity, the angle between the ultrasound beam and blood flow is included in the calculation that is used to derive the Doppler display scale for velocity.

CW A touch screen control used to start or stop continuous wave (CW) Doppler acquisition. CW controls appear on the touch screen when you start CW acquisition.


D D1 and D2

Touch screen controls used to alternate acquisition between the two 2D images of a dual image display. The Dual touch screen control enables dual 2D imaging.

Data Security A setups category that displays the User Settings display, from which you can see the Auto Log Off delay and change your password. You can also click the Admin Settings tab and enter the administrator password to access Administrative setups.

Data Exchange File Format (DEFF)Used when storing images to magneto-optical disk, this format is not compatible with DICOM.

(Date) Format In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to set the format of the system date. You select the format from a menu, then you enter the date in the format you selected. The date appears in the display header.

DCCA Distal common carotid artery

Define Query A group of Worklist setups in the Print/Network setups, under the Device Selection tab. You can set when the worklist server will be queried: on user request, at the end of an exam, on startup, and a selectable period of minutes. You can also select the attributes for the query: station name, system location, and application entity title are available.

Delay A knob on the Physio or Full Volume touch screen that is used to set the delay between the R-wave trigger and the start of acquisition. The delay interval range is 0 to 3,000 msec, in 5-msec increments. Delay is available only in Full Volume BW or Full Volume Color Preview modes when Trigger is on.

Delay 1, 2 Knob displays on the Physio and 3D touch screens used to set the delay between the R-wave trigger and the start of acquisition. The delay interval range is 0 to 3,000 msec, in 5-msec increments. Delay 1 and Delay 2 are available only with Trigger set to ECG and Dual Trig set to On.


Delete Protocol A control in the Protocols setups used to delete the selected custom Stress Echo protocol. This operation cannot be undone.

Delete Selected A control on the Review display used to delete the selected images from either the system's hard drive or a DVD. Selected exams are indicated by an orange background in the image number box located in the lower right corner of the image and its thumbnail. Displayed images that are highlighted become selected by clicking Select Highlighted.

Delete Stage A control in the Protocols setups used to delete the selected stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Delete Status This dialog box shows the status of exams deleted either manually or automatically from Review or the Patient Directory. In this dialog box, deleted exams are listed in the Job column. You can cancel, select, or deselect all of the deleted exams using the selections on the dialog box.

Click to display the Delete Status dialog box.

Delete Subpage A touch screen control used to delete the currently displayed 3D data set and remove that subpage from the currently stored subpages.

Delete View A control in the Protocols setups used to delete the selected view from a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Density A touch screen control used to set the size of the displayed 3D volume. Three settings are available for Density: Low, Med, and High. A density icon appears on the display to indicate how much of the total volume is being displayed.

Depth A control used to adjust the depth of the image display. The depth of ultrasonic echoes displayed in the sector image is based on the assumed constant velocity of ultrasound in tissue, 1,540 m/s.


Depth Value In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to show or hide the depth values.

Derived Calcs In Analysis Config setups, a configuration display for creating new calculation equations.

Desc Descending

Device Name (1) An arbitrary name that must be unique among the names of all device types configured in the setups and shown in the Device Configuration list. It is a required field for DICOM configuration. (2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Configuration setups for a device into which you enter the device name.

Device Selection In Print/Network setups, a tab from which you select the printers and their associations to print and acquisition controls, archive devices and their commit setup and structured report server setup, and the worklist server setup.

Devices (1) A device includes DICOM archive servers, DICOM commit servers, DICOM

PPS servers, DICOM worklist servers, DICOM report servers, DICOM structured report servers, DICOM black-and-white printers, DICOM color printers, local black-and-white printers, local color printers, and local report printers.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, you configure devices by selecting Devices under the Global Config tab and either selecting the device from the Device Configuration list, editing the configuration, or adding a new device.

Diagnostic Information and Mining Engine (D.I.M.E.)A a tool that analyzes log files from ultrasound systems for system faults and failures.

DICA Distal internal carotid artery


DICOM Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM is a standard for network communication; ; how information is coded for sharing between different systems in a medical intranet. An open-standard application protocol jointly developed by the American College of Radiology and the National Electronics Manufacturers Association.

D.I.M.E.Diagnostic Information and Mining Engine. Used by field service engineers to interrogate logs and compare error patterns in the logs to find what hardware and software errors are indicated. See also: Advanced Troubleshooting Assistant.

Direction A control on the PW touch screen used to set the trace direction. This setting dictates whether the High Q Automatic Doppler results will be calculated from above the baseline, below the baseline, or from above and below the baseline. Direction is available only when High-Q or Mean Trace is on.

Display In System Settings, a tab used to display the Display setup parameters related to the types or manner in which certain display information appears: Image Info, Depth Values, Thumbnails, Tool Tips, Auto Freeze, Swept Data Movement, Review Format, System Power, Help Language, and Monitor Brightness.

Display By In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify whether acquired loops are organized view or by stage in the selected custom Stress Echo protocol.

Display Exams A control on the Review Exam display used to view the images in the exams you have selected in the Patient Directory.

Display Exam Tree A control on the Review display used to replace the thumbnails with a list of exams for the current patient.

Display Format A set of controls on the Image touch screen used to set the size and format of the sweeping display. As the sweeping display increases in the size, the 2D image decreases in size. A larger sweeping display can be helpful when performing measurements on the sweeping display. Five formats are available. These controls are available only when a sweeping mode is active.


Display Middle Initial In System Settings, a Patient Data setup parameter used to display or hide the middle initial of the patient name.

Display Thumbnails A control on the Review display used to view the thumbnails for the current patient when the exam tree is present on the right side of the display.

Distance A measurement tool available from the Caliper control used to measure the distance between objects on the image.

Done A touch screen control used to close a display and end a process.

Doppler effectThe Doppler effect, named after Christian Andreas Doppler, is the apparent change in frequency and wavelength of a wave that is perceived by an observer moving relative to the source of the waves. For waves, such as sound waves, that propagate in a wave medium, the velocity of the observer and the source are reckoned relative to the medium in which the waves are transmitted. The total Doppler effect may therefore result from either motion of the source or motion of the observer.

Doppler Results In System Settings, a Measure setup parameter used to select up to eight Doppler results for display during Doppler imaging.

Doppler Trace Mode A measurement and calculation method involving either an automated (High Q) trace or manual trace of the Doppler spectrum.

Dotted Lines In Analysis Config setups, a Tools & Results parameter used to turn on or off the dotted line between the measurement calipers.

Dual A control on the Image touch screen used to enable the display of two 2D images side by side. The D1 and D2 touch screen controls are then used to alternate acquisition between the two images.


Dual Trig A control on the Physio touch screen used to enable dual triggering and display the Delay 1 and Delay 2 controls, which let you set two separate delay times for a single image. This control appears only if ECG is enabled and Trigger is set to ECG.

Duplex ModeHow the network interface processes data. Half duplex is alternating transmit and receive. Full duplex is simultaneous transmit and receive.

Duplicate Protocol A control in the Protocols setups used to duplicate the selected custom Stress Echo protocol.

Duplicate Stage A control in the Protocols setups used to make a new stage based on the selected stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

DVD Status A dialog box that shows the status, type, and destination of all DVD jobs. You can cancel, pause, resume, select or deselect all of the DVD jobs using the selections on the dialog box.

DVT Deep vein thrombosis

Dynamic range The range of signal amplitudes extending from the largest unsaturated signal to the smallest signal just discernible above system noise. Dynamic range is usually expressed in decibels (dB). The dynamic range of the system is determined by the setting selected for Compress.

(2) A knob on the second page of the Physio touch screen used to turn the ECG display on and off.

(3) A Physio touch screen knob used to display the controls for adjusting the ECG display.

ECG Gain A knob on the Physio touch screen used to set the gain for the ECG signal. This control is present only when the ECG touch screen control is active.

ECG Invert A control on the Physio touch screen used to invert the ECG trace on the display. This control is present only when the ECG touch screen control is active.

ECG Position A knob on the Physio touch screen used to set the vertical position of the ECG signal. This control is present only when the ECG touch screen control is active.

ECG Trigger A Full Volume touch screen control used to activate or deactivate ECG triggering of Full Volume acquisition. When ECG Trigger is set to On, you can use Delay to set the delay between the R-wave trigger and the start of acquisition. ECG Trigger is set to On by default.

Echocardiography / EchocardiogramThe echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. Using standard ultrasound techniques, two-dimensional slices of the heart can be imaged. The latest ultrasound systems now employ 3D real-time imaging. The standard echocardiogram is also known as a transthoracic echocardiogram, or TTE. In this case, the echocardiography transducer (or probe) is placed on the chest wall (or thorax) of the subject, and images are taken through the chest wall. This is a non-invasive, highly accurate and quick assessment of the overall health of the heart. A cardiologist can quickly assess a patient's heart valves and degree of heart muscle contraction (an indicator of the ejection fraction).

Edit Device A dialog box in the Print/Network setups used to edit the configuration data for a device.

Edit Report (1) A control on the Patient Report display used to display the report in an editable

format.

(2) A control on the Report touch screen that displays the patient report for editing.


Edit Stage A control on the Protocol touch screen used to turn edit mode on and off for the current stage.

EF Ejection fraction

Eject (1) A control on the VCR touch screen used to stop the current VCR mode and eject

the videocassette.

(2) A control in the Review Exam display used to open the drawer of the DVD RW drive. Using this control ensures that a disk recorded on the system is compatible with the greatest number of DVD and CD-ROM drives. To close the drawer, press the button on the front of the drive or gently push the tray in until it closes.

Elevation A control on the 3D touch screen used to select the position of the 3D volume so that the azimuth reference view is positioned either at the front face, the center, or the back face of the 3D volume.

Ellipse A measurement tool available from the Trace control used to measure the circumference of objects on a 2D image. An area calculation is derived from the measurement.

End Acquisition A control on the Protocol touch screen used to end the acquisition of the loop for the current stage and proceed to loop selection. End Acquisition is available only during a multi-cycle acquisition stage.

End Exam A control on the control panel and on the Patient Data form used to end the current exam.

End Measure An Analysis touch control used to end a measurement and display results.

End Stage A control on the Protocol touch screen used to advance to the next stage while you are acquiring loops. End Stage is available only after you have acquired at least one loop per view in the current stage.


Enter (1) A control on the control panel used to duplicate the accept function during

acquisition of a loop. When either Accept Loop or Accept (View) is active on the touch screen, Enter duplicates the function of the active control. You can also use this control to duplicate the function of the End Measure touch screen control to end a measurement.

(2) A standard key on the keyboard.

EthernetThe low-level protocol used to define the physical and electrical characteristics of a network.

Erase A control used to remove the graphics and results of the active measurement tool. With no active tool, Erase removes all graphics and results for all displayed tools. For complex measurements requiring multiple tools, when Erase removes a tool, it reactivates the previous one.

Erase All Text A control on the Annot touch screen used to erase all annotations from the image display.

Erase Last Arrow A control on the Annot touch screen used to erase the last arrow added to the display.

Erase Body Mark A control on the Body Marks touch screen used to erase the body mark from the display.

Erase Last Word A control on the Annot touch screen used to erase the last word entered onto the display.

Erase Text A key used to erase all of the text annotation on the image display.


ErgonomicsErgonomics, also known as human engineering or human factors engineering, the science of designing machines, products, and systems to maximize the safety, comfort, and efficiency of the people who use them. Ergonomists draw on the principles of industrial engineering, psychology, anthropometry (the science of human measurement), and biomechanics (the study of muscular activity) to adapt the design of products and workplaces to people's sizes and shapes and their physical strengths and limitations.

Exam Tree A list of exams on right side of the Review display used to view exams for the current patient or exams selected in the Patient Directory display. The exam tree is displayed by clicking Display Exam Tree in the Review display.

Exit Panoramic A touch screen control used to exit Panoramic Imaging and return to 2D imaging.

Exit Thumbnail Review A control on the Review touch screen used to quit full screen review and return to the default review layout.

F Factory Settings

In Analysis Config setups, a configuration screen for resetting all Analysis configurations for a calculations package to factory defaults.

Fast Forward A control on the VCR touch screen used to advance the videotape.

Filter A touch screen knob used to establish the wall filter setting during Doppler or Color imaging. A wall filter removes low-frequency Doppler signals originating from slow-moving reflectors, such as vessel walls.

Findings (1) In the patient report, a control that displays the findings for adding interpretive

data about the exam.

(2) A Report touch control that allows selection of pre-worded interpretive statements for clinical analysis of the exam.


FirewireA personal computer (and digital audio/digital video) serial bus interface standard (IEEE 1394), offering high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services. FireWire has replaced Parallel SCSI in many applications due to lower implementation costs and a simplified, more adaptable cabling system.

Flex Flexion

Focus A touch screen control used to assign the focus function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. When Focus is active, use this knob to set the depth of the focal zone. Focal zones are the areas where the image is most clearly focused. Using multiple focal zones decreases the frame rate. When Focus is selected, Focus Range is automatically deselected.

Focus Range A touch screen control used to assign the focus range function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. This function is application-specific. In Cardiology, Focus Range is not available. In Vascular, turn this knob to set the size or range of the focal zone. When Focus Range is selected, Focus is automatically deselected.

Format A control in the Review Exam display, used to format a DVD for copying system settings or storing images or exams.

Format (Type) A knob on the Protocol touch screen that lets you select the format for acquiring loops. Formats are Full Screen and Quad ROI.

Frame Checksum (FCS)Frame Check Sum. The portion of the Ethernet frame reserved for error correction values.

Frame Rate A touch screen knob used to change the frame rate during Tissue Doppler Imaging acquisition.


Free Run A setting for Playback on the Protocol and Review touch screens that lets loops play without forcing them to start or run synchronously. The other settings for Playback are Align and Same Start.

Freeze A control used to stop and start system image acquisition and update. Pressing Freeze results in the system assuming Cineloop pause and assigning the trackball to manual Cineloop review (frame-by-frame).

Front EndAn informal term for the Acquisition system on an ultrasound system. In composition, it varied from system to system; frequently composed of a card cage, channel boards, and other electronic components.

Full Volume (1) A 3D acquisition mode that captures acoustic data in subvolumes and combines

them to create a larger rendered volume.

(2) A control on the right touch screen used to enable 3D standby for Full Volume 3D imaging.

G Gain

(1) A control on the control panel used to adjust gain in both 2D and M-mode acquisition. While in any 3D mode, the Gain setting affects 3D gain (threshold and brightness).

(2) A touch screen control used to adjust gain for PW, CW, Color, CPA, and TDI modes.

Gateway (1) A device or system that connects two networks together.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Configuration setups into which you enter the gateway address of the ultrasound system. This field requires a four-byte IP address with each byte separated by a dot and in the range of 0 to 255.


Global Config Global Configuration. A tab on the Print/Network setup display used to display the System, Devices, and HD Maint. (Hard Drive Maintenance) displays.

Gray Map A touch screen control used to assign the gray map function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. Use this knob to select the grayscale map or turn off the gray map function. Five gray maps are available. The gray map setting appears in the image info as Map X, where X is a number from 1 to 5.

Green Max A Review touch screen knob used during 3D review to move the Green Max crop plane in the volume.

Green Min A 3D Review touch screen knob used to move the Green Min crop plane in the volume.

Group In analysis, a labeled group of measurements.

GSV Greater saphenous vein

Guided tool Any of several analysis measurement tools that provides guidance by displaying step-by-step instructions on the monitor display.

HHarmonics

A touch screen control used to activate and deactivate Tissue Harmonic Imaging (THI). THI is active when HGEN, HRES, or HPEN appears in the image info area on the left side of the display.

HD Maint Hard Drive Maintenance. A setting in Print/Network setups used to set up manual deletions of exams or set a period of time after which exams will be deleted automatically.


HD Zoom A feature that concentrates the system processing ability on a specific region of interest in the real-time image display. The result is a reduced field of view overall, but greater detail and higher frame rate, which contribute to better image quality over the region of interest.

Hardware-based systemA system that depends on hardware, rather than software, for its functionality. Most systems incorporate both hardware and modifying software; systems that operate with minimal software adulteration are also termed hardware-based systems.

Header In System Settings, a tab used to display setup parameters related to the header in the image display: Institution Name, Time/Date, and Optional Header Info.

Headset Configuration In Voice Control setups, a tab used to display instructions for headset configuration and controls necessary for headset configuration: Delete, Unpair, Pair, Change Name, and Refresh Current Status.

Heart Rate A control on the Analysis touch screen used to calculate the heart rate in beats per minute (bpm).

Help A key used to display Help, which contains comprehensive instructions for using the system.

Help Language In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to select the language in which Help is displayed.

Hide Counter A control on the VCR touch screen used to hide or display the playback counter on the imaging display.

Hide Graphics A control on the Protocol touch screen used to hide or show the image information for each loop displayed. Available when loops are displayed.


Hide Gray Bar A touch screen control used during Live 3D acquisition and review to hide the gray bar.

Hide Results An Analysis touch control used to temporarily hide or redisplay measurement results.

High PRF High Pulse Repetition Frequency. A Doppler imaging technique. A pulse is transmitted before the echo from the previous pulse has been received by the transducer. Higher velocity signals can be displayed without aliasing. A disadvantage is the ambiguity in the spatial location of the sample volume. In high PRF, additional sample volumes are displayed as the depth of the sample volume of interest is increased. The extra sample volumes provide points of reference that must be considered when analyzing the Doppler data.

High Q A control on the PW touch screen used to turn on or off the High Q Automated Doppler measurement option. This control is available only if this option has been purchased and installed on the system.

High Q Automatic Doppler Analysis An optional feature that provides automatic Doppler measurements on a real-time or on a frozen Doppler display. When activated, this feature automatically detects, computes, and displays the calculation of specified Doppler parameters.

Home A control on the Annotations touch screen used to move the text cursor to the default or home position on the image display.

HPRF A control on the PW touch screen used to enable or disable the High PRF feature for Doppler imaging. This control has three states, disabled, enabled inactive, and enabled active.

Import from DVD In Config/Test setups, a touch screen control used to import setups from a DVD to the system.

Import Setups A dialog box used to import settings. You can import System, Analysis Config, Annotate, and Print/Network settings, voice profiles and Quick Save presets from a DVD.

Institution Name In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to enter the name of the hospital, clinic, or institution.

Invert A touch screen control used to invert the orientation of the Doppler image relative to the baseline.

Interval A Physio touch screen control used to set the interval between triggers. This control is available only when Trigger is set to Timer.

IP Address (1) A four-byte IP address with each byte separated by a dot and in the range of 0 to

255. A required field for DICOM configuration of the ultrasound system or device.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Config setups, into which you enter the IP address.

iSCAN A control used to activate iSCAN Intelligent Optimization.

iSCAN Intelligent Optimization The iSCAN Intelligent Optimization feature is used during 2D imaging to optimize TGC, compression (dynamic range), and 2D gain for the 2D image. In pulsed-wave Doppler imaging, iSCAN optimizes baseline and pulse repetition frequency for the Doppler display.

J Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)

JPEG provides for lossy compression of images (although there are variations on the standard baseline JPEG which are lossless). The file format which employs this compression is commonly also called JPEG; the most common file extensions for this format are .jpg or .jpeg.

K Knob displays

A set of indicators or displays on the touch screen that correspond to the six knobs below each touch screen. The knobs are used to change mode-dependent functions shown on the knob displays on the touch screen. Each knob may have up to two possible functions in any mode. If two functions are available, you must touch one of the knob displays above the knob to select a function. Settings are usually shown in the knob display.

L L/R Invert

A touch screen control used to reverse the left/right orientation of the image. If you are using a noncardiac preset, an image orientation icon appears in the upper left corner of a noninverted image. The image orientation icon appears on the right of an inverted image. When using a cardiac preset, the location of the image orientation icon is reversed.

LANLocal area network. A computer network spanning a relatively small area, such as an office or corporate campus.

Last In the editable patient report, a selection that uses the displayed measurement value in the highest order column.

Lat Lateral


Lateral Steer A knob on the 3D touch screen used to steer the ultrasound beam during Live 3D Echo. Turning this control tilts the 3D volume to the left or to the right.

Layout (1) A control on the Protocol touch screen used to select the layout of display loops.

Settings are Multi-image and Full Res (full resolution).

(2) A menu on the Review Exam display in which you can select the layout for the displayed images.

(3) An area in Print/Network setups in which you can select the document property Orientation (portrait or landscape) for the associated local printers.

Left An Analysis touch control available only in Vascular calculations for providing separate bilateral labels for anatomical measurements.

Left Ref A 3D touch screen control used to select the position of the 3D volume so that the azimuth reference image is either the front face of the 3D volume or positioned in the center of the 3D volume. The azimuth reference image is the lower, left image in 1/3-2/3 and 2/3-1/3 Live 3D image formats

Length In the Protocols setups, used to specify acquisition type and length for the selected view in a custom Stress Echo protocol.

LGC Lateral gain compensation

LGC slide controls A set of controls on the control panel used to adjust the lateral gain compensation (LGC) curve. In the setups, you can select if and when the LGC curve and numeric values of the LGC slide controls appear on the image display.

LHV Left hepatic vein


Line density The line density setting determines the volume of the image displayed. The higher the density, the smaller the image volume.

Live Capture Type In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to select prospective or retrospective capture.

Loop 1, 2, 3, 4 Controls on the Protocol touch screen used to select the preferred loop or a view. If Select Multiple is active, these controls can be used to select up to four loops.

Loop Type (Method) A knob on the Protocol touch screen used to set the loop type to either Time (in seconds) or Beats (heart beats). Loop length is then set using the Time knob or the Beats knob.

Loops Per View In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify whether one or four views are captured for each view in the selected custom Stress Echo protocol.

LVO Left ventricular opacification. (1) A cardiac application for Contrast imaging that is optimized for visualization of contrast agent in chambers and vessels. (2) A preset used to set up the system for LVO studies. (3) A touch screen control used to activate LVO optimization.

LVO Opt LVO Optimization. A touch screen control used to provide settings for optimizing LVO Contrast imaging. These settings optimize for penetration (LVDA), resolution (LVDC), or a compromise between the two (LVDB). To select an LVO optimization setting, turn the LVO Opt knob until the desired setting is displayed. LVO must be on before you can select a setting. The settings vary depending on the transducer and preset selected.

M Magnify

A touch screen control used to magnify existing display data from a region of a real-time image, Cineloop frame, or Cineloop sequence up to eight times. The magnified image can be panned with the trackball. (The system also provides a different way to magnify real-time images called HD Zoom, which is activated with the Zoom touch screen control.)

Manage Anatomy In the Protocols setups, used to add, delete, or rename views in the selected stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Manage Mode In the Protocols setups, used to add or rename a mode in the selected view of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Map Invert A touch screen control used to switch the colors in the color bar, representing flow direction. The blue-away/red-toward format is the default; velocities above the color bar baseline represent flow toward the transducer, and velocities below the baseline represent blood moving away from the transducer.


Media Access Control (MAC)(1) Media Access Control.a unique identifier attached to most network adapters

(NICs). It is a number that acts like a name for a particular network adapter, so, for example, the network cards (or built-in network adapters) in two different computers will have different names, or MAC addresses, as would an Ethernet adapter and a wireless adapter in the same computer, and as would multiple network cards in a router.

(2) The Macintosh computer, a product of the Apple corporation .

Master Compatibility Matrix (MCM)A list of information about the compatibility of different parts on different versions of the iU22 and iE33. The Master Compatibility Matrix is available through InCenter. The purpose of the MCM is to provide reference information for determining acceptable board and PROM kit revision levels for use in all areas of the Service organization

Master list In Analysis Config setups, a master list displays the collections, groups, measurements, and calculations for the calculations packages.

Max In the editable patient report, a selection that uses the maximum value in the displayed measurements.

Mean Trace (1) A control on the PW touch screen used to display the mean trace on the spectral Doppler trace. (2) The mean trace, displayed in pink on the system, is the instantaneous mean value calculated at each point along the spectral waveform.

Microphone (Mic) A key used to turn on and off the microphone.

Mid Middle

Minimal Technical EnvironmentA mode used by system engineers to troubleshoot systems that have initialized properly through the operating system stage. Access to MTE occurs programmatically as the result of certain boot sequence faults. It can also be invoked by the system engineer during the boot sequence. The system stops loading application software and displays a command shell window.

Min In the editable patient report, a selection that uses the minimum value in the displayed measurements.

MMode A touch screen control used to start M-mode acquisition and display. The "M" stands for motion. The motion occurs over time, which is represented by a sweeping M-mode display.

MMode Map A touch screen control used to assign the grayscale map function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. Use this knob to select the M-mode grayscale map. Five grayscale maps are available.


Modality Worklist In the Print/Network setups, under the Device Selection tab, a group of Worklist setups used to select a worklist server, determine when to query the worklist server, and which query attributes to use.

Mode In the Protocols setups, a selection used to specify additional information for a view in a custom Stress Echo protocol; for example, an imaging mode or an imaging feature such as Tissue Doppler Imaging or contrast. You can select B through E or type your own label.

Mode Settings In System Settings, a tab used to display default format settings for the auto-inversion of Color and Doppler baseline.

Monitor Brightness (1) In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to set the default monitor brightness setting. The settings vary from 1 (darkest) to 5 (lightest). (2) A touch screen control used to adjust monitor brightness to compensate for changes in ambient light. Use this control to quickly make temporary adjustments to the monitor brightness setting in the setups. Turn Monitor Brightness to select a setting from 1 (darkest) to 5 (lightest).

Move Body Mark An Annot touch screen control used to enable the trackball for moving the body mark.

MPA Main pulmonary artery

MPR views The two multiplanar reformatted (MPR) views displayed in Live 3D Echo and in 3D review.


MPR X-Hair A touch screen control used to turn the crosshairs on and off in the multiplanar reformatted (MPR) views. The crosshairs represent the intersection of the two planes orthogonal to the view on which the crosshairs appear. The crosshairs are color-coded to correspond to the image view they represent. There are three settings: On, Partial, and Off.

Multi-cycle In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify a multi-cycle stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Multi-frameThe DICOM name for a loop of images.

MV Mitral valve

N Name/ID

A key used to hide the patient name and ID on the display.

NetworkA collection of computers interconnected through cable or other media for data exchange. Networks can span areas ranging` from a local office to the entire planet.

Network DiameterThe round-trip distance between any two nodes on the network. Exceeding the maximum specified diameter when configuring a network will result in poor network performance.

Network Status A dialog box that shows the status, type, and destination of all network jobs. (In this dialog box, jobs can be either exams or images.) You can cancel, pause, resume, select or deselect all of the network jobs using the selections on the dialog box.

O Operating System

A software program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. The OS performs basic tasks, such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing the processing of instructions, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files.

Optional Header Info In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to select the display of patient birth date, sonographer ID, or neither of those in the header area of the display.

Pulmonary artery

Page A knob on the Protocol and Review touch screens used to display a specific page of acquired loops. Turn Page to move backward or forward through the available images, one page at a time. On the Protocol touch screen, this control is available only when you are selecting views during four-loop acquisition.

Pan Filter A touch screen control used to reduce image artifacts in Panoramic Imaging. The pan filter is a smoothing filter that provides three levels of temporal smoothing to a Panoramic image.

Panoramic A touch screen control used to start Panoramic Imaging.

Password In Data Security setups, a User Settings setup parameter used to set your password.

Patient Data (1) A key on the keyboard or a control on the control panel used to display the

Patient Data form.

(2) In System Settings, a tab used to display the Patient Data setup parameters: Patient Name and Patient Data Units.

Patient Data Access In Data Security setups, an Admin Settings setup parameter used to select unrestricted access or to restrict access to registered users only.

Patient Data Units In System Settings, a Patient Data setup parameter used to select the height and weight units for the patient.

Patient Name In System Settings, a Patient Data setup parameter used to determine the order in which the patient's name appear and whether the middle initial is displayed.


Pause A control on the VCR touch screen used to pause VCR playback.

Pause Exam A control on the Patient Data form used to pause the current exam. If the exam is not resumed within 24 hours, the system ends the exam without notification.

Pause Protocol A control on the Protocol touch screen used to pause the current Stress Echo protocol to allow capture of images outside the protocol.

Paused exam An exam that you have paused in the Patient Data display. If the exam is not resumed within 24 hours, the system ends the exam without notification.

Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)The PCI bus is a path used to deliver information from audio, video, network, and so on…to the central processing unit (CPU).

Performed Procedure Step (PPS)A DICOM process that allows a modality device to send a message to a central server announcing the status of the patient exam (pending, in- progress, complete).

Persist A Color or TDI touch screen knob used to select the level of persistence for the image display. Persistence is also called smoothing or frame averaging. Use Persist to average consecutive frames to provide a smoother appearance with less noise. Use lower persistence values for fast-moving organs or tissues and higher persistence values for slower moving organs or tissues.


Personal Computer (PC)A microcomputer whose price, size, and capabilities make it suitable for personal usage. The term was popularized by Apple Computer with the Apple II in the late-1970s and early-1980s, and afterwards by IBM with the IBM Personal Computer.

Phono A Physio touch screen control used to display Phono Invert, Phono Gain, and Phono Position touch screen controls. This control is present only when the Channel 2 knob display is set to Phono.

Phono Filter A control on the second page of the Physio touch screen used to turn the phono filter on and off. Normal phono bandwidth is 3-1,000 Hz. With the phono filter on, the bandwidth is 3-400 Hz. Phono Filter is available only when Channel 2 is set to Phono.

Phono Gain A knob display on the Physio touch screen used to set the gain for the phono signal. This control is present only when the Phono touch screen control is active.

Phono Invert A control on the Physio touch screen used to invert the phono trace on the display. This control is present only when the Phono touch screen control is active.

Phono Position A knob display on the Physio touch screen used to set the vertical position of the phono signal. This control is present only when the Phono touch screen control is active.

Physio A touch screen control used to display ECG controls.

PICA Proximal internal carotid artery

Plane Adjust A touch screen knob used during 3D Review to position the crop plane in the volume. Plane Adjust is available only when Crop Adjust is set to Plane.

Play A control on the VCR touch screen used to start VCR playback.

Playback A control on the Protocol touch screen used to select the method used to play back acquired loops. Playback methods are Align, Free Run, and Same Start.

Pointer A control used to display a pointer. The pointer is used to select elements on the display.

Port Number (1) A number in the range of 0 to 65,535, found in the DICOM Conformance

Specification for the ultrasound system or device. A required field for DICOM configuration of the ultrasound system or any device configured for DICOM operation.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Configuration setups into which you enter the port number.

Power A touch screen knob used to select the amount of ultrasound acoustic power produced by the transducer, stated in decibels (dB).

PPS Performed procedure step.

PPS Server Performed Procedure Step server. In Print/Network setups, on the Device Selection tab, a Worklist setup listing the configured PPS servers.

Preset/Transducer A touch screen control used to display the Preset/Transducer touch screen, from which you select a transducer and a clinical option/preset.

Previous A touch screen control used to display the default page of touch screen controls.

Previous Slice A control on the Stacked Contour touch screen sub-window used to select the slice to trace, moving forward through the slices.


PRF Pulse repetition frequency. The number of ultrasound pulses emitted per second. At 1,540 m/s, the pulse echo time is 13 microseconds. A typical PRF for real-time 2D imaging is 2-4000 pulses per second.

Print/Network A setups category used to configure your system for print and network operations.

Print A control used to send an image of the full screen or the image display to the configured destination devices.

Print Format In the Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to select the area that will be printed, either the full screen or display area, when Print or Acquire are used.

Print Report A control on the Report touch screen used to send a formatted text file to a text printer connected to the system through a USB port.

Print Status A dialog box that shows the status, type, and destination of all print jobs. You can cancel, pause, resume, select or deselect all of the print jobs using the selections on the dialog box. The status of the current exam and configured printers is also shown.

Printer/Capture In the Print/Network setups, a tab used to display the setup parameters used to set the live capture time, print format, report destination, compression type for captured images and clips, when and where images and clips will be sent, and when pending exam data will be sent.

Priority A control on the Color, CPA, and TDI touch screens that establishes the threshold value at which the 2D grayscale echo information is considered strong enough to indicate a solid structure such as a heart wall, rather than blood flow, even though that structure may be moving.


Prospective Capture In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setting used to select the type of capture. A prospective capture captures a specified acquired loop length. The other type of capture is a retrospective capture.

Protocol (1) A control on the first row of the Preset/Transducer touch screen used to start a

Stress Echo protocol that was selected by touching a preset.

(2) A second control on the third row of the Preset/Transducer touch screen used to select and start a Stress Echo protocol. This second control is present only after touching Preset/Transducer but before touching the first Protocol control.

(3) A guided series of acquired image loops used in a cardiac Stress Echo exam.

Pulse Gain A knob display on the Physio touch screen used to set the gain for the pulse signal. This control is present only when the Pulse touch screen control is active.

Pulse Invert A control on the Physio touch screen used to invert the pulse trace on the display. This control is present only when the Pulse touch screen control is active.


Pulse Position A knob display on the Physio touch screen used to set the vertical position of the pulse signal. This control is present only when the Pulse touch screen control is active.

PV Pulmonary vein

PW Pulsed wave. A touch screen control used to start pulsed-wave Doppler imaging.

Q QLAB Advanced Quantification Software

A software option used to analyze stored images using quantification tools referred to as plug-ins. For more information, press the Help key while QLAB software is active on the system.

Quick Save A key used to save custom presets, which are used to set up the system for a specific area of study.

Quick Save preset Quick Save presets are controls that appear on the Preset/Transducer touch screen. For a specific transducer/clinical option combination, you can set imaging controls and save these settings in a Quick Save preset. When you select the corresponding transducer, your Quick Save presets appear on the Preset/Transducer touch screen along with the Tissue Specific presets. Selecting any preset loads the control settings from the preset into the system.

R R Wave Beep

A control on the Physio touch screen used to enable an audible tone or beep that sounds at the beginning of each R-wave.

RA Right atrium

Random Access Memory (RAM)Memory that is read from or written to by the operating system; used as temporary storage of instructions. RAM is empty without power applied. Standby circuits often supply current to RAM to hold an instruction set in RAM for faster boot times.

Read Only Memory (ROM)A memory chip that is flashed with a permanent collection of instructions.

Rebuild A touch screen control used during Panoramic Imaging review to rebuild and restore the image display. It can be used to check the image for acquisition consistency.

Record A control on the VCR touch screen used to record the image display to a VCR. Pressing Record when the VCR is not in record mode starts recording. Pressing Record subsequently alternates between record-pause mode and record mode. To stop recording, touch VCR to display the VCR touch screen, and then touch Stop.

Red Max A touch screen knob used during 3D Review to move the Red Max crop plane in the volume.

Red Min A touch screen knob used during 3D Review to move the Red Min crop plane in the volume.

Registered Users In Data Security setups, an Admin Settings setup parameter used to register users, import users, export users, delete users, and add users for system access.

Reject A control on the PW or CW touch screen used in conjunction with Compress to adjust the grayscale of the Doppler spectrum. Use this control to remove low-level Doppler signals from the image.

Reject (View) A control on the Protocol touch screen used to reject the view shown on the control, allowing you to acquire a new loop or set of loops for the current view.


Re-label A control on the Protocol touch screen used to assign a different view label to the current loop. Available when Show All is selected or during Edit Stage.

Rename Protocol In the Protocols setups, used to enter a new name for the selected custom Stress Echo protocol.

Rename Stage In the Protocols setups, used to enter a new name for the selected stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

Replay A touch screen control used to play the Cineloop image or to exit replay. During replay, use the trackball to change playback speed. If Protocol is selected, Replay is available only if a protocol is in frozen standby mode. During Panoramic Imaging, Replay is available only when Cine Review is on.

Report (1) A control used to display the patient report. Report saves and closes the report

while any portion of it is open.

(2) A patient report, which can contain images, comments, and measurement and calculations results for an exam.

Res/Spd Resolution/Speed. A touch screen knob that, during SonoCT imaging, provides between three and five frame rate settings used to vary the balance between image quality (resolution) and frame rate. The settings are R2, R1, RS, S1, and S2, which range from high image quality (R2) to high frame rate (S2). To select a resolution/speed setting, turn Res/Spd clockwise to increase frame rate and decrease resolution, or counterclockwise to decrease frame rate and increase resolution. The default setting and the number of settings available are both dependent on the transducer and preset selected.

Reset Cropping A touch screen knob used during 3D Review to reset all cropping adjustments and set Crop Adjust to Off.


Reset Defaults A selection in the setups displays used to reset all of the setup parameters to their default values.

Reset iSCAN A touch screen control used to reset the image parameters to their original settings after you have used iSCAN optimization.

Resp Respiration. A control on the Physio touch screen used to display Resp Invert, Resp Gain, and Resp Position touch screen controls. This control is present only when the Channel 1 or Channel 2 knob display is set to Resp.

Resp Gain A knob on the Physio touch screen used to set the gain for the respiration signal. This control is present only when the Resp touch screen control is active.

Resp Invert A control on the Physio touch screen used to invert the respiration trace on the display. This control is present only when the Resp touch screen control is active.

Resp Position A knob on the Physio touch screen used to set the vertical position of the respiration signal. This control is present only when the Resp touch screen control is active.

Results In analysis, results are the measurement values and their derived calculations.

Results box In analysis, a movable area of the display where measurement results appear. The Results box is divided by a horizontal line that displays measurement results in the upper portion and derived calculations in the lower, for a total of up to 18 lines of results. The latest measurement is on top, the latest calculation is on the bottom.

Retrospective Capture In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setting used to select the type of capture. A retrospective capture captures a specified loop length that was acquired previously. The other type of capture is a prospective capture.


Review A control on the control panel used to activate the Review Exam display and the Patient Directory.

Review Format In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to select the default review image format. You can select Full-Resolution or Multi-Image.

Rewind A control on the VCR touch screen used to rewind the videotape.

Right An Analysis touch control available only in Vascular calculations for providing separate bilateral labels for anatomical measurements.

Right Invert A touch screen control used to invert (left-to-right) the right image in Live xPlane BW and Live xPlane BW Color modes. This control also automatically adjusts Rotate by 180 degrees.

ROI Region of interest. A frame or box that appears on an image to show the portion of the image that is magnified, acquired, or displayed.

image. In the Rotate/Tilt graphic, the solid and outlined circles represent the image orientation icons on the left and right image, respectively. The outlined circle moves to show the angle of the right image with respect to the left image.

(2) A Panoramic Review touch screen knob used to adjust the image size as needed to display the entire image. If the image is zoomed larger than x1.0, portions of the image could move off the display during rotation.

Same Start A setting for Playback on the Protocol and Review touch screens that forces loops to start at the same time. The other settings are Align and Free Run. Unlike Align, in Same Start, all loops run at their requested speeds, but each loop waits until all loops are finished to start playing again.

Scale A knob on the PW, CW, Color, and CPA touch screens used to adjust the scale of the sweeping display, and thus the range of velocities displayed. The Scale setting changes the pulse repetition frequency (PRF).

Scroll/Page A knob on the Report touch screen used to page through a multi-page report.

Search/Set Counter A control on the VCR touch screen used to either search for a location on the VCR cassette or to set the playback counter.

Sector Width A touch screen control used to adjust the width of the 2D sector. A narrower sector width increases frame rate.

SEE Opt A touch screen knob used to change the setting of the Soft Echo Enhance (SEE) feature. This feature enhances the visibility of soft tissue by optimizing 2D imaging settings. Depending on the transducer and application you select, there may be more than one setting available. The SEE knob display is available only when Soft Echo Enhance directly above it is on. Soft Echo Enhance is available only in live imaging when no Contrast preset is active.

Segment LengthThe point to point physical cable length between the two network nodes sharing the same segment. The segment can be one continuous conductor or may include repeaters.


Select Two unlabeled controls, one on either side of the trackball, that are used to select objects, activate controls, and make measurements. Use Select to click, double-click, select, drag, and trace objects. Both Select controls function identically. Repeated selection during a measurement sequences the control through all calipers of the tool and then completes the tool with the last caliper.

Select Highlighted A control on the Review and Protocol touch screens that selects the image that is currently highlighted. A selected image is indicated by an orange background in the image number box located in the lower right corner of the image and its thumbnail. This attribute determines which images are affected by the following display controls: Send To Report, Send To, Delete Selected, and To DVD as.

Select Multiple A control on the Protocol touch screen that allows you to select multiple loops for a view using Loop 1, 2, 3, or 4. Available in multi-cycle or quad-cycle acquisition.

Send Images/Clips In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to determine when the images and clips will be sent, either after each print or capture or at the end of the exam, and whether a copy will be sent to the DVD.

Send Pending Exam Data In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to determine when you want to send pending exam data, either automatically at reconnect or manually.

Send Report (1) In Print/Network setups, a Printer/Capture setup parameter used to determine

where a patient report will be sent: report printer or report server.

(2) A selection on the patient report used to send a report over a DICOM network to a structured report server.

Send To A control on the Review display used to send the selected images from either the system's hard drive or a DVD to destination devices. Images cannot be sent to the source drive. Selected exams are indicated by an orange background in the image number box located in the lower right corner of the image and its thumbnail. Displayed images that are highlighted become selected by clicking Select Highlighted.


Send To Report A control on the Review display used to send the selected images from either the system's hard drive or a DVD to the current report. Selected exams are indicated by an orange background in the image number box located in the lower right corner of the image and its thumbnail. Displayed images that are highlighted become selected by clicking Select Highlighted.

Separate Modes A control on the Protocol touch screen used to organize the display of wall-motion loops by mode instead of by stage or by view. This control is not available when Shuffle is set to Sequential.

ServerA special-purpose network computer designed to provide unique services to other computers. These services can include file storage, security, remote network access and other functions.

Service Class Provider (SCP)A DICOM Service Class Provider.

Service Class User (SCU)A DICOM service class user.

Service Object Paid (SOP)Service Object Pair. The fundamental building block of the DICOM protocol, the Service Object Pair is the bundling of a DICOM service (store, print, etc.) with an Information Object (ultrasound image, CT image, X-Ray image, etc.). The DICOM standard organizes SOP pairs into classes. For two DICOM devices to exchange information they must both support the same SOP classes.

Set Contours A control on the Stacked Contour touch screen sub-window used to set the number of slices or contours to be included in the stacked contour measurement.

Set Date In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to select the date format and set the date.

Set End Points A control on the Stacked Contour touch screen sub-window used to set the end points of the stacked contour measurements.


Set Home A control on the Annotations touch screen used to set a new default or home position for the annotation cursor.

Set iSCAN A touch screen control used to adjust the brightness level set by iSCAN in 2D imaging. This setting will be used each time you activate iSCAN with the current transducer.

Set Time In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to select the time format and set the time.

Setups A key used to display the system setups. The setups are used to set several different types of system parameters.

Show All A control on the Protocol touch screen used to display all loops for a selected view. Available when a loop is selected while editing the stage.

Shuffle A control on the Review touch screen used to sort loops in the Review display. When Shuffle is set to Sequential, loops are sorted chronologically. When Shuffle is set to View or Stage, loops are sorted by view or stage, and can be sorted further by modes when Separate Modes is on.

Simult Simultaneous. A PW touch screen control used to turn on simultaneous update of the 2D and Doppler displays.


Single Print Mode A print mode used to immediately send images to the configured DICOM network printers, a DVD, and other network archive devices, instead of as in batch mode, where images are sent after the exam ends.

Signal Image Processor (SIP)The secondary computer on an ultrasound machine that runs application program to implement different modes and settings.

Single-FrameThe DICOM name for a single image.

Skip View A control on the Protocol touch screen used to skip the current view and proceed to the next view.

SMA Superior mesenteric artery

Smooth A touch screen control used to change the appearance of the flow data by using spatial filtering. Use the Low settings for smaller vessels and the High setting for larger vessels.

Smoothing A knob on the 3D touch screen used to change the amount of smoothing applied to the surface of the object in the 3D volume.

Soft Echo Enhance A touch screen control used to activate or deactivate the Soft Echo Enhance (SEE) feature. This feature enhances the visibility of soft tissue by optimizing 2D imaging settings. Depending on the transducer and application you select, there may be more than one setting available. When Soft Echo Enhance is on, you can select a setting by turning SEE. Soft Echo Enhance is available only in live imaging when no Contrast preset is active.

Software-based systemA system that depends on software, rather than hardware, for its functionality. All software systems operate hardware on some level. Systems whose specific operation is intrinsically defined by software operating upon generalized hardware is termed a software-based systems.


SonoCT A touch screen control used to turn on and off SonoCT Real-time Compound Imaging.

SonoCT Real-time Compound Imaging SonoCT imaging is performed by rapidly acquiring a series of overlapping image frames from substantially differing spatial directions and combining these images to reduce speckle and improve contrast resolution.

SonogramA diagnostic medical image created using ultrasound echo equipment. See sonography.

SonographyMedical ultrasonography (sonography) is an ultrasound-based diagnostic imaging technique used to visualize muscles and internal organs, their size, structure and any pathological lesions, making them useful for scanning the organs. Obstetric sonography is commonly used during pregnancy.

Start A touch screen control used to start the construction of the Panoramic image display.

Station Name (1) An arbitrary name, but a required field for DICOM configuration of the

ultrasound system.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Config setups, into which you enter the station name of the ultrasound system.

Steer A touch screen control used to adjust the steering angle for a linear array transducer.

Spacio-temporal Image Correlation (STIC)A 3D acquisition mode implemented on the iU22 premium ultrasound.

Stop A touch screen control used to stop Panoramic acquisition before the buffer is full. You can also press Freeze to stop acquisition. Touching Stop a second time clears the Panoramic image and returns to standby.


Stop A control on the VCR touch screen used to stop playback and recording.

Storage CommitA DICOM process enabling a modality device to query a storage server to determine if a transferred study was stored successfully.

Structured report server On the Device Selection tab in Print/Network setups, clicking Archive displays a list of DICOM structured report servers configured for your system. If the system is set up for DICOM structured reporting, your selection in this list specifies the server to which the system sends patient reports.

Study Info A control on the Patient Data Entry touch screen used to display the Study Info tab of the Patient Data form, in which you can enter patient data for the selected exam.

Sub Loop A knob on the Protocol touch screen used to page through multiple loops that were selected for a given view in a stage.

SUB4C Subcostal four chamber

Subnet Mask (1) A four-byte IP address with each byte separated by a dot and in the range of 0 to

255. A required field for DICOM configuration of the ultrasound system.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Config setups into which you enter the subnet mask of the ultrasound system.

Subpage A touch screen knob used to select which 3D data set, or subpage, is displayed.

SV Size Sample Volume size. A PW touch screen control used to adjust the sample volume size. Sample volume size is represented by an adjustable cursor located along the D-line at the sample volume depth, which is positioned on the 2D display using the trackball.

Sweep A touch screen knob used to adjust the sweeping speed of the physio, M-mode, or Doppler displays. This control is also used to set playback speed for loops. There are five sweep speeds: Min, Slow, Med, Fast, and Max. The sweep speed is displayed on the touch screen. A medium sweep speed is suitable for normal use, but a fast sweep speed may be useful to show the shape of some flow information. If, for example, a flow pattern is to be analyzed carefully to calculate a mean pressure gradient, then it will be much easier to do this at a faster speed than at a slower speed. There are three sizes of time markers in the sweeping displays. The largest time marker denotes a time of 1 second, the smaller time marker denotes 0.2 second, and the smallest time marker denotes 0.1 second. The smallest time marker appears in the faster sweep speeds.

System Location (1) An arbitrary name, but a required field for DICOM configuration of the

ultrasound system.

(2) In the Print/Network setups, a field in the Global Config setups, into which you enter the ultrasound system location.

System Power In System Settings, a Display setup parameter that sets the way in which the power switch functions: Full Power Down or Standby.

System Settings A setups category from which you set various system setup parameters.

T TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A suite of network layer protocols and utilities used as the foundation for DICOM and other communications applications.

TDI A control on the right touch screen used to start and stop Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI) mode. TDI is available in live, frozen, and Cineloop modes. It is available only in cardiac presets with sector transducers; it is not available in TCE or LVO Contrast modes.


TDI Compare A control on the TDI touch screen used to compare a Tissue Doppler image with a grayscale view of the same image.

TDI Map A control on the TDI touch screen used to assign the color map function to the corresponding touch screen knob below it. Use this knob to select and apply a color map to the Color display in Tissue Doppler Imaging. The color scale on the image display is a visual representation of the color map. The color scale includes the Nyquist limits, the color baseline, the color wall filter, and a color-versus-echo write priority marker.

TDI Opt Tissue Doppler Imaging optimization. A knob on the TDI touch screen used to vary the balance between image quality (resolution) and penetration during Tissue Doppler Imaging. Two settings optimize for resolution (Res) or penetration (Pen). Three additional settings add Harmonic imaging to optimize for resolution (HRes), penetration (HPen), or general (HGen), which is a balance between resolution and penetration. To select a resolution/penetration setting, turn TDI Opt clockwise to decrease penetration and increase resolution, or counterclockwise to increase penetration and decrease resolution. The default setting and the number of settings available are both dependent on the transducer and preset selected.

TDI Suppress A control on the TDI touch screen used to remove color from the image while remaining in Tissue Doppler Imaging. The frame rate is unaffected.

TEE Transesophageal echocardiography

Text Cursor A key used to display the text cursor for annotating the image display.

TGC Time gain compensation

TGC Curve/Values In System Settings, the Display setup parameters used to turn on or off the TGC curve and values. You can also set the curve and values to go off after 3 seconds.


TGC/LGC In System Settings, a tab used to display the setup parameters for the time gain compensation (TGC) and lateral gain compensation (LGC) functions. These parameters include whether and when the curve and numeric values of the TGC and LGC sliders appear on the image display.

TGC slide controls A set of controls on the control panel used to adjust the time gain compensation (TGC) curve. In the setups, you can select if and when the TGC curve and numeric values of the TGC slide controls appear on the image display.

Thumbnails (1) A key used to hide or display the thumbnails on the imaging display.

(2) In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to show or hide the thumbnails in review.

(3) In review, miniature images.

TI Thermal Index. A touch screen control used to select the type of thermal index. Thermal index is a displayed index that provides information about the conditions that exist that might lead to an increase in temperature at the surface of the body, within the body tissue, or at the point of focus of the ultrasound beam on bone. The settings are TIB, TIC, and TIS.

TIA Transient ischemic attack

Tilt A touch screen control used during 3D Live xPlane review to change the elevation angle or lateral tilt angle. When this control is set to Elevation, the trackball controls the elevation angle, and when set to Lateral, the trackball controls the lateral tilt angle. Each time you touch Tilt, it switches between Elevation and Lateral. When you set Rotate to 90° or 270° the system sets Tilt to Lateral. When you set Rotate to 0° or 180° the system sets Tilt to Elevation. You cannot set Tilt to Off directly by touching the control; when you set Rotate to a value other than 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270°, the system sets Tilt to Off.

Time A knob on the Protocol touch screen used to set the loop length in seconds. This control is available only when Loop Type is set to Time.


Time/Date In System Settings, a Header setup parameter used to set the date and time and their formats.

Time/Slope A measurement tool available from the Caliper control used for sweeping displays. It can be used to measure distance, time, and slope.

Timer A control on the Protocol touch screen used to start the acquisition timer if it is off, which indicates the elapsed time during a stage or study. If the timer is running, touching Timer does nothing. The timer will be reset automatically at the end of the exam.

Timer Autostart In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify the timer stage of a custom Stress Echo protocol.

TIPSS Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt

Tissue Specific preset Tissue Specific presets are controls that appear on the Preset/Transducer touch screen. You select a Tissue Specific preset to specify imaging settings for a specific area of study, such as abdominal vascular.

Title Cursor A key used to display the title cursor on the image display.

To DVD as JPG/AVI A control on the Review display used to send the selected images from either the system's hard drive to the DVD drive. Selected exams are indicated by an orange background in the image number box located in the lower right corner of the image and its thumbnail. Displayed images that are highlighted become selected by clicking Select Highlighted.

Tool tips (1) Brief descriptions of the function of icons and selections on the screen. (2) In System Settings, a Display setup parameter used to show or hide the tool tips.


Tools & Results In Analysis Config setups, a configuration screen for setting the availability and operation of measurement tools.

Touch screen (1) A touch-sensitive display that provides a set of related controls. When you touch

a control that is displayed on the touch screen, you initiate the function that corresponds to that control.

(2) In Analysis Config setups, a configuration screen for adjusting the layout of the Analysis touch screen.

TR Tricuspid regurgitation

Trace A measurement tool available from the Trace control used to start a 2D circumference measurement or a Doppler or M-mode trace.

Trace by Points A measurement tool available from the Trace control used to measure an irregular distance on a spectral waveform.

Trackball A control used to move objects on the monitor display. The trackball status is displayed in the trackball arbitration list at the bottom of the screen, which indicates the functions linked to the trackball.

Training In Voice Control setups, a control used to initiate the training process for voice control. A dialog box with a list of training topics appears with instructions for use.

Trans Transverse

TransducerPiezoelectric materials are used as ultrasonic transducers for imaging applications (e.g. medical imaging, industrial nondestructive testing, or NDT) and high power applications (e.g. medical treatment, sonochemistry and industrial processing).


For imaging applications, the transducer can act as both a sensor and an actuator. Ultrasonic transducers can inject ultrasound waves into the body, receive the returned wave, and convert it to an electrical signal (a voltage). Most medical ultrasound transducers are piezoelectric.

Trigger A control on the Physio touch screen used to set the source for triggered image updates. When Trigger is set to Timer, you can use Interval to set the interval between acquisition triggers. When Trigger is set to ECG, you can use Delay to set the delay from R wave to the start of acquisition.

Trim Image A control on the Panoramic touch screen used to enable the trim functions. The Panoramic image can be trimmed from the left or right. You can touch Rebuild to return the image to its original size.

Trim Left/Trim Right Controls on the 2D Frozen touch screen, on the Protocol touch screen, and during Review, which are used to display and position trim cursors on the Cineloop indicator bar. You use the trim cursors to temporarily set new beginning and end points for the Cineloop sequence. Pressing Select anchors the active trim cursor and enables manual review. During a Stress Echo protocol, this control is available only when Edit Stage is on.

Triplex Triplex (also called triple mode) is the simultaneous update and display of 2D, Color, or CPA imaging, and Doppler ultrasound information. Triplex can be used to decrease exam time and improve efficiency. Triplex is available with a select set of transducers

A touch screen control used to reverse the up/down orientation of the image, as indicated by an image orientation icon , which appears at the top of a noninverted image and at the bottom of an inverted image.

UltrasoundThe use of ultrasonic waves for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. See Sonography.


Un-Accept Loop A control on the Protocol touch screen used to unaccept the selected loop, allowing you to accept a different loop as the preferred loop for the current view.

Undo Crop A touch screen control used during 3D Review to undo the last plane crop adjustment and move the crop plane back one step

Universal Serial Bus (USB)A serial bus standard to interface devices. It was designed for computers such as PCs and the Apple Macintosh, but its popularity has prompted it to also become commonplace on video game consoles, PDAs, cellphones; and even devices such as televisions and home stereo equipment (e.g., mp3 players), and portable memory devices.

Universal Resource Locator (URL)The intranet or Internet name or address used to locate a website. Typically begins with http:// or https://.

Update 2D A control on the PW touch screen used to change the method by which the system updates the image display. Touching Update 2D halts updating of the spectral trace and starts updating of the 2D image. Available only when Simult is off.

Update Trace A control on the PW touch screen used to change the method by which the system updates the image display. Touching Update Trace halts updating of the 2D image and starts updating of the spectral trace. Available only when Simult is off.

User Settings In the setups, a tab used to display setup parameters related to Data Security: Auto Log Off and Password are available.

V Variance

A touch screen control used to enable the variance display during Color imaging. Variance is the difference in blood flow within a given number of samples; it indicates change in blood flow or possible turbulence due to an obstruction. Variance can be mapped to a color, such as green, to identify it more clearly during an exam.


Vascular (1) A calculations package. (2) A Report touch control that displays the beginning of the report that describes the Vascular results. (3) In the Annotate setups, a tab used to display the vascular annotation setups.

VCR Videocassette recorder. A control on the left touch screen used to display the VCR touch screen and its associated controls.

VCR Autostart In the Protocols setups, a setting used to specify which stages of a custom Stress Echo protocol are VCR stages.

VerificationA test process transacted between DICOM devices (i.e. modality and workstation) to confirm reliable communication.

View A knob on the Protocol touch screen used to specify which view you want to acquire next. To reacquire a view, turn View to select the view.

View Previous Report In the patient report, a control that displays the original completed report when you are taking additional measurements from its images. This control only appears when you are working with a completed report.

View Report (1) In the patient report, a control that displays the reports in final format.

(2) A Report touch screen control that displays the final patient report.

ViperVIPER is the acronym for VIsual Philips Escalation Resolution. VIPER is a database tool used to manage customer escalations.

Voice Control In the setups, a display from which you set up your voice profiles and headset configuration.


Voice Profiles In Voice Control setups, a tab that provides access to a list of voice profiles, training for voice recognition, and selections for adding and deleting voice profiles.

W Warning

An icon used when there is a possibility of a system malfunction that might prevent use of the ultrasound system.

WebThe Internet world wide web.

WF Wall filter

WideScan A touch screen control used during SonoCT compound imaging to show a display created from all of the ultrasound data acquired for compound imaging.

Worklist A control on the Patient Data Entry touch screen used to display the Worklist tab in the Patient Data form, in which you can load patient data and select a scheduled procedure

X xP Image

A control on the xPlane touch screen used to select either image in xPlane mode for independent adjustments. xP Image offers three settings; Both, Left, or Right.

xPlane A control on the right touch screen used to start xPlane (biplane) imaging.

X-rayX-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength in the range of 10 to 0.01 nanometres, corresponding to frequencies in the range 30 to 30 000 PHz (1015 hertz). X-rays have been developed for their use in medical imaging. Radiology is a specialized field of medicine. Radiographers employ radiography and other techniques for diagnostic imaging.


X-rays are especially useful in the detection of pathology of the skeletal system, but are also useful for detecting some disease processes in soft tissue. Some notable examples are the very common chest X-ray, which can be used to identify lung diseases such as pneumonia, lung cancer or pulmonary edema. Traditional plain X-rays pose very little use in the imaging of soft tissues such as the brain or muscle. Imaging alternatives for soft tissues are computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scanning), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound.

XRes A touch screen control used to start XRes image processing.

XRes Image Processing An adaptive algorithm that enhances grayscale image quality by reducing speckle and noise, while maintaining image resolution.

Y

Z Zoom

(1) A touch screen control used to activate HD Zoom. Zoom is available in 2D, M-mode, Color, CPA, and TDI. (2) A generic term used to describe any method of enlarging a portion of an image. Two types of zoom are available on the system: Magnify and HD Zoom.
