Iftheypassalltheexams, theywill gotouniversity
nextyear.
O habitual é que esas dúas accións vaian unidas por unha conxunción, que pode ser temporal como as do cadro (when, until, before), concesiva (although) ou causal (because).
Pódese enfatizar a duración da actividade con expresións como for, since, all day, etc.
Samhas been studyingFrenchforyears.(Sam leva anos a estudar francés.)
Wehad been walkingforhourswhenJontripped.(Levabamos a andar horas cando Jon tropezou.)

2—A Healthy Future As oracións condicionais
O condicional ceroEmprégase if + Present Simple na condición e o Present Simple no resultado. Ás veces pode empregarse when no canto de if sen que o significado da frase varíe. Ifyouheatwaterto100ºC,itboils.
(Se quentas auga a 100º C, ferve.) Whenyouheatwaterto100ºC,itboils.
(Cando quentas auga a 100º C, ferve.)Ademais do Present Simple, no resultado tamén se poden empregar os verbos modais. Ifyouhaveceliacdisease, youcan’t eatgluten.

Form Uses Examples
wish / if only+ Past Simple
Refers to a present situation that the speaker is unhappy about
wish / if only+ Past Perfect Simple
Expresses regret about a past action or situation
Iwishhehadn’t gotintotrouble.(Oxalá non se tivese metido nunha lea.)If onlywehad thoughtthisthrough.(Oxalá tivésemos reflexionado sobre isto.)
wish / if only+ could / would + base form
Expresses a desire for something to happen in the future
As oracións temporais
Iftheygavemorediscounts,theycould/might
havemoreclients.(Se fixesen máis descontos, poderían ter máis clientes.)
O terceiro condicionalFórmase con if + Past Perfect Simple na condición e would have + participio no resultado. Ifwehadtakenthecar, wewould havebeen
stuckinatrafficjam. (Se tivésemos collido o coche, teriamos estado retidos nun atasco.)
No canto de would have + participio, no resultado pode empregarse could have ou might have + participio. Ifyouhad exceeded thespeedlimit,youcould/
might have hadanaccident.(Se tiveses sobrepasado o límite de velocidade, poderías ter tido un accidente.)
O que cambian son as conxuncións: no canto de if ou unless, empréganse as soon as, by the time, the moment (that), when, etc. I’ll call you as soon asIgethome.
(Chamareite tan pronto chegue á casa.) When Iwatchcomedies,Ialwayslaughoutloud.
Unlessyoupressthatbutton, itdoesn’t work. Ifyoudon’t pressthatbutton, itdoesn’t work.
O primeiro condicionalEmprégase if + Present Simple na condición e o Future Simple no resultado.
Ifyoucan arriveontime, youshould seetheexhibition.
(Se podes chegar a tempo, deberías ver a exposición.)
O segundo condicionalEmprégase if + Past Simple na condición e would + o verbo na forma base no resultado. Youwouldn’t beoutofshapeifyouexercised more.
(Non estarías en baixa forma se fixeses máis exercicio.)Se o verbo da condición é to be, adoita empregarse were en todas as persoas do singular e do plural. Ifshewererich, shewould buyaluxuryflat.
(Se fose rica, mercaría un apartamento luxoso.)Para dar consellos emprégase a fórmula If I were. IfI wereyou,Iwould savesomemoney.
(Eu de ti aforraría algúns cartos.)
As oracións desiderativas
Advantage 2 Galician © B Burlington Books
19
As oracións desiderativas expresan un desexo e poden formarse co verbo wish ou coa expresión if only.O verbo wish adoita levar como obxecto directo unha oración subordinada.
A expresión if only ten o mesmo significado: “Oxalá...”, “Se polo menos...”. Iwish/If onlyitweren’tsocold.
(Oxalá / Se polo menos non fixese tanto frío.)Tanto wish como if only poden empregarse con varios tempos verbais, como se ve no cadro.● Co PastSimple referímonos a situacións presentes que
quixeramos cambiar ou mellorar. IwishIknewhowtohelpher.
(Oxalá soubese como axudala.)Se o verbo que vai en PastSimple é to be, cómpre usar were en todas as persoas, incluídas a primeira e a terceira do singular.
IwishMattwerehere. (Oxalá Matt estivese aquí.)
● Co PastPerfectSimple referímonos a feitos pasados, lamentando o que ocorreu.
IwishIhadn’t declinedtheoffer.(Oxalá non tivese rexeitado a oferta.)
I wish you would listentoJoe.(Oxalá escoitases a Joe.)
Pleasethrow away therubbish. (Por favor, tira o lixo.)
Please throw therubbish away. Please throw it away.

A voz pasiva
FormaAfirmativa: suxeito + to be como auxiliar no tempo correspondente + participio do verbo principal. Thepatientis being examinedbythedoctor.
Negativa: suxeito + to be como auxiliar no tempo correspondente + not (ou n’t) + participio do verbo principal. Thepackagewasn’t deliveredontime.
Thatepisodecan’t be dubbeduntilnextMonday.
Interrogativa: to be como auxiliar no tempo correspondente + suxeito + participio do verbo principal. WasthattrailershotinIceland?
Will Nora’spaintingsbe exhibitednextweek?
(Exporanse os cadros de Nora a semana que vén?)Nas preguntas con partícula interrogativa tamén se cambia a orde do verbo auxiliar e do suxeito, agás cando a partícula fai de suxeito. Whenwasthefirstseasonreleased? (Cando se estreou a primeira tempada?) Who will be givenanaward?

Somebodystolemycar. Mycarwas stolen. (Roubáronme o coche.)
A estrutura have / get + obxecto directo + participio expresa accións que se encargan a alguén. I’m having/gettingmyhairdyed.
(Vou tinguirme o pelo.) Theyhadtheirroofrepaired yesterday. (Reparáronlles o tellado onte.) Bobwill gethiscarwashedtomorrowmorning.
Iwantedtosurpriseher,soIgot theflowers sent. (Quería sorprendela, así que lle enviei as flores.)
Youshouldhaveyourdocumentsbacked upatleastonceamonth.
Sherylgothernailsmanicured lastTuesday. (Sheryl fíxose a manicura o martes pasado.)
Wegetourcarpetreplacedeverythreeyears.
deny, detest, dislike, enjoy, finish, miss, postpone, recommend, suggest, etc.
Manypeopleenjoyed watchingthatshow. (Moita xente gozou vendo ese espectáculo.)● Logo das preposicións. Emilyhasalwaysbeenafraidof flying.
(A Emily sempre lle deu medo voar.)● Logo dalgunhas estruturas: be used to / get used to,
be worth, can’t help, can’t stand, don’t mind / wouldn’t mind, feel like, it’s no use, look forward to, see myself, etc.
Idon’t mind working overtime. (Non me importa facer horas extra.)
Jilldecorated theroomwithflowers. The room was decoratedwithflowersbyJill.
Theyshould give Leahsometimetorest. Leah should be givensometimetorest. Sometimetorestshould be givento Leah.
Danhas defeated himinthethirdround. He has been defeatedinthethirdroundbyDan. (Foi derrotado na terceira rolda por Dan.)● Ponse o verbo to be no mesmo tempo que tiña o
Wemust takeactionbeforeit’stoolate. Actionmust be takenbeforeit’stoolate.
Theyare going to demolish thebuilding. Thebuildingis going to be demolished.
She wrote thereport. Thereportwas writtenbyher.
1. Unha construción impersoal formada por it + verbo en pasiva + subordinada introducida por that.
It is expected thatthedocumentarywill reachallaudiences.(Agárdase / Esperan que o documental chegue a todos os públicos.)
It is known thatmanyanimalsdiebecauseofglobalwarming. (Sábese / É sabido que moitos animais morren polo quecemento global.)
Thatchefis said to bethebestinthecity.(Dise / Din que ese chef é o mellor da cidade.)

Thisisthebuildingin whichI’velivedforthreeyears.[formal] Thisisthebuilding(which)I’velivedinforthreeyears.[informal] (Este é o edificio no que vivín durante tres anos.)
Themanto whomhetalkedwasthemanager.[formal] Theman(who)hetalkedtowasthemanager.
Lookatthisscarf!Iknittedit(myself). (Mira esta bufanda! Tecina eu (mesma).)
QueenElizabethII(herself)gavethespeech. (A (mesma) raíña Sabela II deu o discurso.)
Cando dúas ou máis persoas realizan mutuamente a mesma acción, empréganse os pronomes recíprocos each other e one another. Ás veces non é preciso traducir estes pronomes en galego.
NickyandTimloveeach other.
Oracións especificativasAchegan información para identificar o antecedente.● Who (persoas) e which (cousas, animais...) pódense
substituír por that.
Theoldman(who / that) youhelpedtheotherdayismygrandfather.(O ancián ao que axudaches o outro día é o meu avó.)
Sorry,butthisisnotthedessert(which / that)Ihadordered.
Thatistheday(when / that)theygotmarried. (Ese é o día en que casaron.)
● Whose (posesión) e where (lugar) non poden omitirse nin substituírse por that.
Sheisthegirl whose poemwonthefirstprize. (Ela é a rapaza cuxo poema gañou o primeiro premio.)
Thatisthecompany whereMartinworks. (Esa é a empresa onde traballa Martin.)
Thewoman(who / that)youjusttalked to isanexceptionalviolinist.
Fórmanse con who, which, when, where e whose, que non se poden omitir nin substituír por that.
DrSmith, who is a nutritionist, doesn’tapproveofcrashdiets.

should / ought toOs dous empréganse para dar consello e facer recomendacións. Should é o máis empregado dos dous.
have to / mustExpresan obriga ou necesidade. Para o resto de tempos verbais úsase have to.
Be able to, have to, ought to e need to son semi-modais, polo que non comparten todas estas características, mais si algúns dos seus usos (habilidade, obriga, etc.).

We’d better rushifwedon’twanttomissthespeech.

“I’maveryresponsibleperson.” He saysthathe is averyresponsibleperson. Tell sempre leva un obxecto indirecto sen a preposición to. A oración subordinada vai introducida pola conxunción that, aínda que no inglés falado adoita omitirse. “Wedecidedtogivethemareward,”theysaid.
Theytold us(that)theyhad decidedtogivethemareward.
Theysaid(that)theyhad decidedtogivethemareward.(Dixéronnos que decidiran darlles unha recompensa.)
“I’vebeenwaitinghere,”shesaid.
Shesaid(that)shehad been waitingthere. (Dixo que estivera a agardar aí.)
Cando a frase enuncia unha verdade xeral, non hai cambio nos tempos verbais. “Wealllearnfrommistakes,”ourteachersaid.
Ourteachersaidthatwealllearn frommistakes.
Son as que comezan cunha partícula interrogativa (what, who, where, when, why, whose, how, how long, etc.).
“Whowereyoutalkingto?”Mollyasked. MollyaskedwhoIhad been talking to.

“Pleasestopthecar,”thepolicemansaid.
Thepolicemantold me to stopthecar. (O policía díxome que parase o coche.)
“Couldyoupleaseholdthedoor?”thewomanasked. Thewomanasked me to hold thedoor. (A muller pediume que suxeitase a porta.)
Cando se trata dunha oración negativa, ponse not diante de to. “Pleasedon’tbeangrywithme.”
Hebegged me not to beangrywithhim.
“Youshouldcometoseetheparade,”theysaid.
They invited us to seetheparade. (Convidáronnos a ver o desfile.)
“Youshouldtakeyogaclasses,”Briansaid.Brianrecommended that I takeyogaclasses.(Brian recomendoume ir a clase de ioga.)
● Empregando o xerundio, sen especificar ningún suxeito. “Weshouldreaditalloveragain,”mycolleaguesaid.
apologise, boast, claim, complain, declare, deny, explain, inform, insist, mention, offer, predict, promise, refuse, remind, reply, state, etc.
● Preguntas: enquire, request, want to know, wonder, etc.● Ordes: demand, order, shout, warn, etc.● Súplicas: beg, etc.● Suxestións: advise, invite, recommend, suggest, etc. “Thewholecityhasbeenevacuated.”
Sheclaimedthatthewholecityhadbeenevacuated. (Afirmou que toda a cidade fora evacuada.)
“Diditstopraining?”Luccawanted to knowifithadstoppedraining.(Lucca quixo saber se parara de chover.)
“Youshouldn’ttrusther.”Hewarnedmenottotrusther.
