DNA Newsletter

Dear Friends

It’s hard to believe that I should be sending you best wishes for a wonderful Christmas/festive season and that you will be free of me until February - the year has gone so quickly. The stories you have sent me wove in my mind into nonsense tales while I rested with a glass of wine on my stoep. Listen!

Sitting on the Stoep It was over a hundred and fifty years since his first visit that Doctor Doolittle once more found himself in Africa. On his first visit he had come in a sailing ship but this time he had flown all the way to South Africa and found himself on a stoep in Dainfern having tea with members and friends of the Nature Association. You see Doctor Doolittle was still the only man that could properly ‘talk to the animals’ so he was to meet with the Dainfern family and advise the committee on how they were doing, and how best we should all do, for happy peaceful co-existence. Doctor Doolittle was most interested to hear about the preservation of the indigenous bush and grasslands and streams because he agreed that the first essential for all the animals and birds was to be provided with a home and food and drink. So this was good.

All were delighted that Doctor Doolittle had brought Polynesia the Parrot (who could speak many languages) with him – conversing would be so much easier! With the committee were all the sighting people (sighting people are people who observe the animals and are interested in their behaviour and wellbeing and tell others what they have seen or heard). Doctor Doolittle was so pleased to meet these sighting people and to be introduced to their sightings as he hadn’t met any of them before.

Lily Leguaan and little Leguaan were very tired after having little Leguaan’s first swimming lesson and were fast asleep under a bush but quickly woke and took instantly to the dear Doctor as did Porky Porcupine (Hebert Hedgehog sadly didn’t attend). Hairy (pronounced Harry) Caterpillar was hiding from Mr & Mrs Goose and family and Olivia Owl and Stalky Shrike but Polynesia explained to him that

he was quite safe. Mr & Mrs Goose, Olivia Owl and Stalky Shrike got on particularly well with Polynesia Parrot as she too could fly – one thing the good doctor couldn’t do however hard he tried, despite having been to the moon years before the Americans. So they all sat down to tea on the terrace (as only Dainfern could do it with all sorts of wonderful things to eat) before Porky Porcupine and Olivia Owl yawned and said it was time for them to get some sleep as they were not usually awake during the day and little Lequaan’s eyes closed again as his head dropped onto the table. It was such a happy tea party!

Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important ThingsNow for the real stories!

• Perhaps Wim you can help: “Last year in May my Daughter and her hus-band found their Dain-fern garden invaded by a large number of hairy caterpillars. All our cuckoos love hairy caterpillars but by May these had already departed, some for Europe and most for Central Africa. Only the Striped Cuckoo was

still here. I was hoping that these caterpillars would again be here in May but there was no sign of them. I would like to know what butterfly or moth produced these caterpillars and tried to have them identified with no success. Perhaps one of our readers can identify them? I could not establish their plant preference.”

• Or Gavin, “Recently I found to my dismay that a Hedgehog had drowned in our swimming pool. It must have swum around for quite some time before dying a horrible death. It occurred to me that if there had been a device in the pool that enabled the animal to climb out, this would not have happened. Any DIY experts among our residents? Let's hear your suggestions please!”

• On our stoep far away in Port Alfred we heard all about Doctor Doolittle’s visit – we first met him long ago – and have a suggestion. While visiting far away folk we saw a most intriguing sight. Tommy the Tortoise was part of the family but the garden was on two levels and he needed to get to the higher level to get to his food and water bowl.

Fortunately Tommy had a very caring family who built him a special ramp and he solemnly walked up and down

the ramp when he needed to. Just look at Tommy in the pho-tograph!

So perhaps a plank hooked to the edge of the pool and balanced on a large plastic bottle would solve the hedgehog problem. I checked with Doctor Doolittle and he thinks it’s a great idea!

• Two little boys out bike riding needed an urgent stop to answer the call of nature when out of the bush came a baby water monitor, they said they weren’t scared until the mom came out of hiding. They both ran!

• An amazing picture of a Shrike in Paddy’s garden who tells us, “This shrike is raising three of her babies

on the 17th fairway in front of Sandalford Close. It has killed a grey-headed sparrow and is pulling pieces off to feed. She takes the head off the thorn and then replaces it. When shrikes are feeding they use frogs and birds from their pantry which is a long

pen-thorn close to the nest. As the chicks grow insects are then the main food.”

• Alison writes, “Tokoloshe or porcupine? Once all of the lilies in our garden were destroyed so no longer a food

source, our night-time visitor decided to squeeze under the garage door (left mar-ginally open) chew his way through the hard plastic of a 12kg dog food bag, and eat at least a third of the bag of dog food. Fortunately our dog

didn’t decide to try and protect his food that night!”

• This owl story is absolutely fascinating. Recently Eco Solutions found two Spotted Eagle Owl babies nesting in one of the owl boxes and decided to ring them. The Nature Association members and some residents gathered to watch and while waiting to get started were intrigued to see the mother on a roof staring at them, obviously wondering if her babies were safe. Then, would you believe it, the heavens opened and the hail pelted down – everybody was well and truly soaked despite running for cover. Mummy owl also needed to take cover so flew into the box with her babies. A real bonus as then she too could be caught. After a perilous climb up the tall ladder mummy and two babies (there could have been three but one was nowhere to be found) were safely on the ground and the ringing process began. Imagine the delight of all present when it was discovered that mummy was already ringed and when the data was checked it was found she had been released in Dainfern by Free Me in 2006. How amazing is that? A success story if ever there was one!

• Perhaps you know that our Editor is an animal freak! Although not in Dainfern Colleen spotted Mr and Mrs Goose walking their babies along a busy road. It looked, and was, perilous. So, with the help of a passerby, Colleen shepherded the little family towards home. Can you imagine what people thought! It would have been easier to get them into Cedar Creek but no, home was Cedar

Butterfly Walk: After

DNA Update

The Dainfern Nature Associating has once again been very busy this year enhancing the Estate. A good re-lationship has been established with Golf and we are now working very closely with each other.

As usual Olivia and Sean have been working so very hard maintaining and beautifying our surroundings. Below is an update of what the Nature Association has been up to along with before and current pictures of 2 main previous projects, Butterfly Walk and Trent Stream .

ProjectsThe Nature Committee together with the DHA and Golf have been working for the last 6 Months to re establish Grasslands where the invasive Kikuyu Grass was en-croaching into the Nature Area’s.

This has taken a huge amount of time and labour to remove the grass and weeds in preparation for seeding of grass into these area’s which are at the end of Willowgrove, the 6th T Box Area’s, along the 4th Fairway, and down Rocky Ridge (Where Aloes have also been planted) just before the Bridge at River exit.

To date these areas have now been seeded, and we just await some good rainfall, so that these grass area’s take off and establish itself into the natural grass area.

Saw Grass A cobbled Pathway has been laid as far as the little stream. This has improved the look of this area. Brick paving has

DNA Thank You's

The Dainfern Nature Association would like to say a big thank you to Laura Powell for her assistance throughout the year and a special thank you to Tony and Tricia Border who timelosly submit the interesting “On the Stoep” newsletter. Thank you to LilyHouse Design Studio for their continuous commitment in helping with the production of In Focus. You are all very much appreciated. Finally, thank you to our advertisers who make it possible to publish In Focus, which is going into its 13th year. Once again we ask the residents to support these valid advertisers so we can continue to use the proceeds from the magazine to enhance our surroundings.

Lakes and that was where they were determined to go! To cut a long story short, with the help of the passerby on his way to work and the brief temporary switching off of the electric fence the family made it home and Colleen was exhausted! Well done – you are a dear soul!

Nature’s True Colours The standard of colouring is so high but Amber (aged 9) has beaten the rest of you to the prize. I wonder what you are going to do with your R100?

Crackerjack“Home Again” from the last chapter of his book set in the 1840s, “and when winter came again, and the snow flew against the kitchen window, the Doctor and his animals would sit around the big warm fire after supper, and he would read aloud to them out of his books ………….. But far away in Africa…………..” The Story of Doctor Doolittle- Hugh Lofting 1920

Hugh Lofting was also a practising civil engineer (like me) so maybe that explains some of my lifelong affinity for his stories.

As his animals approach the end of the year in their cold winter may we wish you all a warm and happy Christmas and New Year in Africa.

I know we are very lucky! Regards from Tony Border for the Nature Association

Trent Weir This was another bare bit of unsightly land on the left just before Trent Dam, on the Main Gateside road from the Indaba entrance which was upgraded to a lovely parklands area.

It was grassed and a bench placed so one can sit and admire the scenery. This area is now established and one cannot help looking at its beauty whilst driving past.

been laid under a number of benches, which looks a lot neater and is a huge improvement.

16th FairwayThe Bank along the 16th has been reshaped, and in the next weeks this will be planted up with Aloes, and Cotyledons.

Owl & Bat BoxesOwl and bat boxes have been put up around the Estate. A Pair of Barn Owls were released successfully.

ExpenditureThis year we have spent approx R145 000 on projects and maintanance. Our main revenue is from the In Focus magazine so once again we encourage residents to use our advertisers so we can continue to look after our environment.

Butterfly Walk - UpdateOur previous project Butterfly Walk is looking beautiful. This project was undertaken after a number of requests about an unused area in Highgate which was overrun with weeds and used as a dumping ground for garden refuse by numerous residents. This project was put to the Nature Committee, whereby they unanimously agreed for this area to be landscaped and upgraded.

Sean James from Turfnet and Olivia Denny put together some ideas and then with the help of a front end loader, they transformed this lifeless area into a lovely Walk, which was named “Butterfly Walk”.

DNA Updatecontinued from page 6

A number of indigenous trees and plants were used to attract butterflies and birds .If you are one of the many walkers who frequently use this lovely walk you will be sure to spot a number of birds and butterflies whilst meandering along the cobbled path. Often Sun Birds can be spotted sitting on the Red Hot Pokers and other trees which they can feed off.

As you will see from the before and after photographs, this mundane lifeless area, has taken off, and with the good rains that we are hoping for this Summer, the trees, and shrubs should look even better.

Oil Dump on William Nicol

The anonymous witness saw a JHB water truck and people dressed in JHB water uniforms outside the BP garage on William Nicol drive near Fourways crossing pumping about 5000 litres of oil from a nearby pressure reducing valve (PRV) chamber onto the grass embankment alongside the road. The witness asked them to stop and was told that this happened every year and that they should not tell them what to do.

The witness said that oil dumping was a serious environmental concern and needed to be cleaned up immediately.Spokesperson for JHB Water said the incident did take place and visited the site to find the cause of the problem and they were currently in the process of getting quotes from service providers to assist in cleaning the oil spillage on the surface.

Apparently a fourways environmentalist witnessed an oil dumping incident at the side of the William Nicol Drive on the 5th November.

Questions for next month's issue can be emailed to [email protected]. For assistance in any property transfer matters kindly contact me on details below:

The question whether new property owners are liable for previous owner’s rates and taxes was dealt with in two recent cases:

Property MattersAll your property related questions answered

The first being the controversial decision in Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality v Mathaba 2013 regarding historical Municipal Debt.

"it was confirmed that Section 118 (3) of the Municipal Systems Act gives a municipality a lien (the right to keep possession of property belonging to another person until a debt owed by that person is discharged) over a property within its jurisdiction, securing payment to that municipality of any money due to it which relates to that property.

This means that if any money which is due and payable to a municipality remains unpaid at time of transfer, the municipality can, after obtaining a judgment against the person liable for the debt, (the person who owned the property at the time the debt was incurred) attach the property and cause it to be sold in execution to recover the money due to it.

The second case being the landmark case Perregine Joseph Mitchell v City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipal Authority.

It was declared that:

The security provided by section 118(3) of the Systems Act, No 32 of 2000 in favour of the respondent (Municipality) was extinguished by the sale in execution and subsequent transfer of the property into the name of the applicant. The applicant is not liable for the payment of outstanding municipal debts older than two years and which were incurred by his predecessor(s) in title. The Municipality has no right to refuse the supply of municipal services only because of such debt.

The court ruled that the Common Law of South Africa, stipulates that if property purchased at a sale in execution is transferred to the purchaser thereof without objection or action by the holder of a hypothec over the property (which includes municipality liens) the purchaser acquires “a clean title”.

It has been suggested that the Mathaba judgement had been reinterpreted in the Mitchell judgement so as to mean that after transfer occurs the purchaser and his property can no longer be threatened by municipal debt issues relating to periods prior to transfer. The ruling having the effect of freeing the property and the purchaser thereof in that case from any prior municipal debt, but only in respect of properties purchased at sales in execution.

The decision in Mitchell v City of Tshwane re-instilled protection for the Purchasers, but Purchasers, should ensure that any offer made to purchase a property, includes a clause obliging the seller to settle all debts due to the relevant municipal authority and not just the last two years' debt before transfer occurs.

Decorate the Christmas dining table What will your dining table be wearing this festive season?

Interior Ideas

continue on page 20

There are those who prefer to decorate the Christmas dining table in minimal style, and those who like to go all out with table decorations galore. Whatever your style we've got plenty of ideas and inspiration for decorating your Christmas dining table.

South Africans celebrate the festive season in many different ways and not every family sits down to a home-cooked full on Christmas lunch or dinner. But setting a table for Christmas sets the tone for the day, whether it's cold cuts, an outdoor braai, or a celebration with family and friends.

A beautiful white table is dressed with sprigs of green and white roses to add a luxurious touch that is simple and affordable but oh so dramatic. Investing in a set of white crockery allows you to dress a dining table up for special occasions without too much effort.

Keep it simple is a philosophy that many tend to apply when it comes to dressing the table for Christmas dining. A woven table runner and a dash of gold and green are simple and elegant and can be used time and again.

How to set the perfect Christmas table Here are six simple steps for creating the perfect Christmas table using elegant white crockery and a few glass and silver accessories.

Clockwise from top left:

1. Start with a tablecloth, or plain table, and table runner.

2. Lay out placemats and heat-resistant placemats for the centre of the table if you will be serving hot food. Coasters for glasses are placed at the top right-hand corner.

3. Wrap cutlery in serviettes. This normally consists of a knife, fork and spoon and is placed on the left side of the placemat.

4. Add place settings, starting with a charger and the crockery you will need for the meal.

5. Place wine and/or water glasses on the coasters.6. Add your decorations and Christmas crackers to

finish off the table.

Celebrate in black and white this festive season. A selection of black and white crockery looks stunning on its own, and even more celebratory when combined with silver.

When entertaining for a large group of family and friends, a separate table is set for the younger members of the family. This is an opportunity to go to town with

decorations. Children's eyes light up with joy when they see a Christmas table filled with festive goodies.

Shop around for the best selection at affordable prices. There are a lot of online shopping stores that have a wonderful selection of decor items for Santa's table.

Most importantly, have fun while decorating your Christmas Table!

Let's paint the interior for the Holidays!

Paint Ideas

Painting the interior of your home is an excellent way to bring new life to your rooms and get your home ready for the upcoming holiday season.

Now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the holidays; it will take some time to complete your projects, so it’s best to start planning early. With so many colours to choose from, you can create the perfect colour palette for your decorating style. Painting is by far the most dramatic way to decorate and change the look and feel of your home both on the inside and outside.

continue on page 26

The holidays are fast approaching, so are your holiday visitors. Is your home visitor – ready? If not, there’s still time to do something about it. First you will want to decide on a painting project. There are a few things you’ll need

to do before hiring us to put a brush to the wall. One important step to start the process of creating a new look in your home is to determine what kind of feeling you want to have in the room, or throughout your home. Since the

Page 14: Glory to Glory Ministries Dainfern Fellowship

- 26 -

Paint Ideascontinued from page 24

goal is to create an environment right for the holidays you will want to go with warm colours, such as red, orange, yellow or beige. These colours will create a positive and happy mood and add cosy intimacy in large spaces. They can help warm up a room that has northern or eastern exposure. The cool colours – blues, greens, violets or greys, give a serene feeling and can add spaciousness to small places. The balance between light colours and deep colours should also be considered when choosing your house paint colours.

When we say “painting for the holidays”, we don’t mean murals of Santa or painting the bedrooms red and green. We mean to create a warm environment in which your family and friends will be comfortable. You will want to choose a specific colour scheme that appeals to you and will create the environment you desire. Consider how complex a colour scheme you wish to undertake. Here are three main colour schemes to choose from:

• Monochromatic schemes are based on one hue, which varies in value (lightness and darkness), and

saturation (the amount of colour). An example of this is a pale blue with a pure blue and dark blue.

• Analogous schemes combine no more than three similar colours. An example of this is red, orange, and yellow. When trying to pair up different colours in the same area, remember that any two colours side-by-side on the colour wheel will work together. Any three colours side-by-side can be used to create this colour scheme.

• Complementary schemes are based on opposing colours. This scheme offers more contrast and can introduce both warm and cool colours into the area. An example would be a warm yellow wall with deep blue trim. These colours are warm and cool, respectively, but work beautifully to create contrast, depth, and a welcoming environment.

After you’ve read this article, take a look around your house and envision the clean, warm, and inviting home you want for your holiday celebrations.

Art as Investment

Works on Paper - Art or not?It is not my habit to gossip about my clients, but I feel the need to make an exception. A few weeks ago, while we were setting up an exhibition for an extremely popular and gifted photographer, a gentleman strolled into the gallery and commented that, “this paper stuff is killing the real art.” Upon enquiry, it appeared that “real art” consisted exclusively of works of oil on canvas.

However, this conversation provided the opportune moment to say something about the integrity of works on paper within the world of investment art.

No-one would dream of arguing that Picasso’s lyrical drawings do not constitute real art. His beautiful “Acrobate et jeune arlequin” received the record price on auction for one of his works on paper; the investor parted with $38 million.

In 2012, the art world came to a standstill when Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” was sold for just under $120 million by Sothebys New York. It currently holds the record for the highest price achieved by a single artwork at auction. The piece is pastel on board – neither oil nor canvas.

Looking closer to home, a colour lithograph by local artist Sam Nhlengethwa “Inspired by Abdulam Ibrahim,” was estimated to sell between R10 000 and R15 000 on Stephen Welz’s auction in September. It sold for

R110 000. This is wonderful news for the artist, the collector, and anyone interested in works on paper.

William Kentridge is an international phenomenon. He is credited by many experts with being the most important living South African artist. He is a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor whose work appears in collections all over the world. His works are regularly featured in the catalogues of Bonhams, Christies and Sothebys. His “Drawing for stereoscope: Soho at desk on telephone,” estimated between R1,2 million and R1,6 million sold at Strauss on the 10th of November for R4 million.

Having established that works on paper not only constitute art, but are also often sound investments, how does this apply to the average purchaser? One of the advantages of works on paper is that they are often more affordable than canvas works. One hopes to spend only a little, but also have an expectation of an increase in value. Due to the vulnerable nature of paper, specialized framing is required if your treasure is to endure. Deal with someone you trust.

THE POSTHOUSE GALLERY is all ready for the Christmas season, and many of the beautiful pieces available are works on paper. They make lovely presents. Do visit us for some ideas.

Left to right: Acrobate et jeune arlequin (by Pablo Picasso); The Scream (by Edvard Munch); “Inspired by Abdulam Ibrahim” (Detail) (by Sam Nhlengethwa) and Soho at his desk (by William Kentridge).

Dainfern Juniors Golf Fun Day - FeedbackSunday, 9 November 2014

We were unsure about what turnout to expect, and boy were we surprised; between 80-90 children from 3-15 yrs. attended the inaugural Juniors Golf Fun Day. After warming up they were split into two groups: those who

had played before and those who were new to the game. Teaching and playing professionals as well as talented amateurs taught and demonstrated to the former, and SNAG (Simply New At Golf) catered for the latter.

The Junior Golf Development Committee would like to thank the following people for their contribution to the success of the day: Ed Holding; Richard Miller; Daniello Lavicotti; Tyrone McComb; David Myers; Leigh-Jane Middleton; Cameron Walker; James Reeder and Coca-Cola

Tennis Update

Tennis at Dainfern

Duane Armstrong • 082 456 5441 [email protected]

www.armstrongtennisacademy.co.za

One can’t believe that 2014 is on its last legs and we have 6 weeks left before we enter 2015.

Tennis at Dainfern has been amazing and more and more people are taking to the game.

One area that has shown tremendous growth is the amount of ladies playing tennis. Some haven’t played for years and miss it, others are starting to play and some ladies have never stopped playing. If I look how our Wednesday ladies league has grown and how much fun they have, we will have to make another court available to them. Well done to all you ladies for your commitment and enthusiasm. It is truly awesome to see how much fun you are having!

All of us, being a coach or player came into 2014 with our goals, aspirations and we would work hard towards achieving it all. I am sure it might have a bit of a rollercoaster year for some, but perseverance always prevails. And yes we do have stumble blocks in our path, but it’s how you get up and move forward that counts and makes you stronger.

As a youngster my coach had a sign, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, harsh but very true and most athletes live by it.

I remember doing a cycle race some years ago, racing for the club tour de frans, I was so tired and cramping. I was in the leading bunch and could not peddle anymore and the pain was excessive. Frans the chairman of the club, a very accomplish racer kept on saying to me, “mind over matter, mind over matter”, it was very hard at the time to fully appreciate those wise words, but I did and focused and raced with my mind. I finished that race with the leading bunch. Those words are wise to all sports and especially tennis.

I believe most of us have achieved our goal for 2014; I certainly as a coach have achieved my goals! We have just over a month to recap and start setting our goals for 2015, what an exciting though. Remember to always set your goals that you can achieve them, with your ultimate goal in mind as well’

Well done to all our tennis players for 2014!

On behalf of myself, the committee and the entire coaching staff we would like to wish you all happy holidays and keep kicking, see you all next year.

REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR 2015 SEASON OPENS ON THE 19th JANUARY 2015 AND PRACTICE WILL RESUME ON THE 2nd FEBRUARY 2015.

Toddler Section Opens 201518 month - 3 years

What a fun afternoon was had by all!! We had three awesome face painters who spent the afternoon painting the ghastly, gory and sometimes downright scary faces onto our children. The jumping castle was busy all afternoon with ghosts, ghouls, cats and other creatures jumping away the afternoon.

The Karaoke turned into a disco rather than a karaoke but it was such fun. The kids had their own dancing

competitions (as far as I am concerned they were all winners but boy do we have some talent here!) and boogied away the afternoon fuelled by popcorn!

The winners of the “Best Dressed” boys and girls really went to town with their costumes and looked fantastic.

Here’s looking forward to next year’s event!

The Retired Gentlemen’s Circle - RGC

What could be more pleasant than to spend an hour or so in the company of some thoroughly decent Fellows, reminiscing the past and planning the future!?

So come on gentlemen, whether retired, semi-retired or about-to-retire, we’d like to welcome you to our Circle. Talking of plans - we already have the beginnings of a small number of interest groups. There is a good deal of interest in Photography, Cinema and Theatre. No doubt, one or two Fellows from the Retired Gentlemen’s Circle will coordinate these Semi-Circles. The Circle is open every Thursday at 2pm on the terrace at the Dainfern Clubhouse.

Running Club

Greatest time of the year for runners...This is a great time of the year for runners. The sun is up early, the running season is just picking up and most of you have long December holidays to look forward to. For some, being out of routine can be an obstacle to good consistent training. This can only be remedied by self-discipline, setting your alarm and getting out there no matter what.

You could always try to connect with a local running club if you think you need the motivation. For those of you travelling locally, there is a national listing at http://www.runnersguide.co.za/Clubs/. Runners are generally a friendly bunch and most clubs would welcome visitors on their runs. You could also look for some local events while you are away – many of the small seaside towns have Christmas Eve or New Year’s runs.

You can also check out the Runners World website if you are travelling domestically as any local races will be advertised here http://www.runnersworld.co.za/events/.

Talking of races, we will be starting our CGA licensing process within the next few weeks, so please look out for e-mails if you are already on the mailing list, or contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in obtaining a license.

Email: [email protected].

There will be no time trials on 17, 24 and 31 December and 7 January. Wishing all our members a blessed festive season.

Estate News

Contractors Xmas ShutdownAs is always the practice, the Estate will be closed for all construction activities over the Christmas period.

We urge all homeowners and residents to take note of the fact that all contractors and associated sub-contractors must leave the Estate by no later than 16h00 on Friday 12 December 2014. The Estate will re-open for contractors on Monday 12 January 2015.

Service providers, such as garden and pool services will be permitted entry onto the Estate during this period as well as any emergency services such as plumbers and electricians.

FSS Security Xmas FundThe dedication, loyalty and hard work of the Security Personnel is not always adequately appreciated. However

during the Christmas period which is a time for giving we would like residents and homeowners alike to contribute towards the Security Christmas Fund as a token of appreciation for all that they do in making this Estate a safe carefree environment.

We will be collecting your donations throughout the month of December and into January 2015. Depending on the amount collected, a celebratory braai will be held towards the end of January for all security personnel, and the balance of the fund will be divided equally between the FSS staff members.

Holidays and your PetsIf you and your family are planning a holiday away during the festive season kindly ensure that you make adequate arrangements for the care of your pets. Dogs need to be tagged, such tags containing at least the Owner/Resident’s name and telephone number.

The DHA do not have facilities to house more than 3 dogs/cats at any given time and then only for a day or two. Roaming dogs that are not tagged will unfortunately be taken to the SPCA.

Flower of the Month

The Poinsettia is a culturally and commercially important plant species of the diverse spurge family that is indigenous to Mexico and Central America. / Scientific name: Euphorbia pulcherrima / Higher classification: Euphorbia / Rank: Species

Euphorbia pulcherrima WilldThe Poinsettia

The Poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd., is a member of the family Euphorbiaceae. The genus Euphorbia contains some 700 to 1,000 species. It is characterised by a single female flower, without petals and usually without sepals, surrounded by individual male flowers all enclosed in a cup-shaped structure called a cyathium. The showy red, pink, white, or bicolored portion of the plant, popularly referred to as the flower, consists of modified leaves or bracts .

Poinsettia plants are native to Central America, especially an area of southern Mexico known as 'Taxco del Alarcon' where they flower during the winter. The ancient Aztecs called them 'cuetlaxochitl'. The Aztecs had many uses for them including using the flowers (actually special types of leaves known as bracts rather than being flowers) to make a purple dye for clothes and cosmetics and the milky white sap was made into a medicine to treat fevers. (Today we call the sap latex!)

The Poinsettia was made widely known because of a man called Joel Roberts Poinsett (that's why we call them Poinsettia!). He was the first Ambassador from the USA to Mexico in 1825. Poinsett had some greenhouses on his plantations in South Carolina, and while visiting the Taco area in 1828, he became very interested in the plants. He immediately sent some of the plants back to South Carolina, where he began growing the plants and sending them to friends and botanical gardens.

Caring for your poinsettiaTo keep your Poinsettia growing and happy during the season, it is best to set it in bright light and a cool place - not drafty.

• Poinsettias are often pot bound when you purchase them and will benefit from being re- potted, roots loosened up, and fresh potting soil added.

• While the Poinsettia is blooming, mix a teaspoon of granulated fertiliser in the watering can along with a little Epsom salts. Never overwater. It is important with any container plant to make sure the container has drain holes and the plant is not setting in water.

One of the friends he sent plants to was John Barroom of Philadelphia, who gave the plant to his friend, Robert Buist, a plants-man from Pennsylvania. Robert Buist was probably the first person to have sold the Poinsettias under their botanical, or latin name, name 'Euphorbia pulcherrima' (it means, 'the most beautiful Euphorbia'). It is thought that they became known as Poinsettia in the mid 1830's when people found out who had first brought them to America from Mexico.

There is an old Mexican legend about how Poinsettia's and Christmas come together, it goes like this:

There was once a poor Mexican girl called Pepita who had no present to give the the baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Services. As Pepita walked to the chapel, sadly, her cousin Pedro tried to cheer her up. 'Pepita', he said "I'm sure that even the smallest gift, given by someone who loves him will make Jesus Happy."

Pepita didn't know what she could give, so she picked a small handful of weeds from the roadside and made them into a a small bouquet. She felt embarrassed because she could only give this small present to Jesus. As she walked through the chapel to the altar, she remembered what Pedro had said. She began to feel better, knelt down and put the bouquet at the bottom of the nativity scene. Suddenly, the bouquet of weeds burst into bright red flowers, and everyone who saw them were sure they had seen a miracle. From that day on, the bright red flowers were known as the 'Flores de Noche Buena', or 'Flowers of the Holy Night'.

The shape of the Poinsettia flower and leaves are sometimes thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem

Interesting facts about Poinsettias• Did you know that the Poinsettia's main attraction

is not its flowers, but its leaves? The flowers of the plant are the yellow clustered buds in the center (termed “cyathia”). The coloured leafy parts are actually bracts or modified leaves, that turn colour in response to the plant forming flowers. When buying a Poinsettia, make sure it has the buds, preferably not yet open.

• Red is the most popular colour, accounting for roughly three-quarters of all sales nationwide, followed by white and pink.

The more than 100 varieties of Poinsettias come in a range of coloirs from red, salmon, and apricot to yellow, cream, and white (but not blue - these are a designer colour created with dyes). There are also unusual speckled or marbled varieties with several colors blended together. New varieties are introduced yearly.

• Did you know that in the wild or planted in tropical climates, the Poinsettia can reach heights of 12 feet with leaves measuring six to eight inches across? It is actually a small tropical tree ( Euphorbia pulcherrima) belonging to the Euphorbia plant family.

(Ref. pps.uvm.edu)

which led the Wise Men to Jesus. The red coloured leaves symbolise the blood of Christ. The white leaves represent his purity.

Poinsettias also grow as large outdoor shrubs in Madagascar and don't just flower at Christmas! They are also the national emblem of Madagascar.Ref: www.whychristmas.com.

Giant KingfisherMegaceryle maximus

By André Marx

Bird of the Month

The Giant Kingfisher is the largest kingfisher in Africa and is easily identified by its large size, huge bill and white on black speckled upperparts and head.

Although it may not seem obvious, the male and female plumages differ markedly, with males having a chestnut chest with the belly being white with blackish speckles and with a white underwing, while the female shows the reverse with the chest being white with black speckles and the belly and underwing coverts being chestnut. So it is quite easy to sex a Giant Kingfisher if you can remember that combination!

Despite its size this is quite a shy kingfisher species that will sit quietly for long periods and can be overlooked unless it draws attention with its loud call, which has been described as a ‘wak-wak-wak’ sound. In Dainfern they are occasionally seen perched on bridges or on prominent branches adjacent to the Jukskei River from where they will hunt fish, frogs and invertebrates such as crabs.

The birds will hunt by plunging into the water, often immersing themselves completely. Once they have caught their prey they will typically take it to the nearest perch where it will beat the prey against something solid until the prey is dead, before consuming it.

They are commonly found on large rivers and dams but have colonised suburban areas with time where they will move between small dams, ponds and wetlands that harbour their prey, although they are not commonly found in very built up areas, preferring quieter areas with suitable habitat. This species has been known to snatch pet koi and goldfish from well stocked ponds at homes as they are just irresistible to the bird! It is best to place a net over your pond if you are experiencing that problem.

The Giant Kingfisher will breed in a hole in a vertical sandbank near water. They will lay 3-5 eggs in the nest and both sexes will incubate and care for the young. The chick takes about 37 days to emerge from the nest and is dependent on the adults for at least another 21 days.

This species does benefit from dams and ponds stocked with fish but at the same time is declining in more urbanised areas where potential nest sites are lost and where pesticides may be affecting the food chain that it depends on. Its continued presence in Dainfern is dependent on the river and dams in the estate remaining clean and pesticide free.

Creature of the Month

The BatRef: www.ecosolutions.co.za

The Dainfern Nature Association has provided bat boxes around the Estate. These nocturnal creatures are ideal to keep the mosquito population down.

How many mosquitoes can a bat eat in a night....?I often overhear people in the office speaking on the phone to our clients about the wonders of bats and how many mosquitoes they eat per night. It seems to range from “1000 mosquitoes in the first hour after dark”, to “1000 per night” to “10 000 per night” to “a lot; heaps!”. I even once, though only once, heard someone proudly say... “All of them!”. I started thinking about how one would work it out. So, if you have been having the same sleepless nights wondering exactly this, grab a cup of tea, coffee, double, and let’s go...For the sake of a simple answer, let’s use the Cape Serotine Bat (Neoromicia capensis) as the predator and the mosquito (Culex pipiens) as the prey item (both species are common visitors to gardens in Cape Town and Johannesburg). Again, for simplicity sake, let’s suggest a catholic mosquito diet for the duration of the dusk to dawn equation. Please remember that this is a broad scientific stroke equation, so a degree of latitude would be most welcome. The number of insects consumed by a bat varies considerably by species, season and reproductive cycle. It is estimated that a Little Brown Bat in captivity consumes roughly 25% of its body weight in insects each night. Obviously under natural conditions this intake would increase as large energy requirements are required in

the actual predation process. Kurta et al estimates that at a peak night of lactation, a 7,9g Little Brown Bat (M. Lucifugus) needs to consume 9.9g of insects (over 100% of its body mass). This increase in consumption is a result of the costly energetic expenditures required during the reproductive cycle (I’m sure most of us can relate?). At peak lactation, a female Brazilian Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) can consume up to 70% of her body mass in insects each night. Like the Little Brown Bat (Myotis spp.) the Cape Serotine Bat weighs between 6 - 10g. On average, our household mosquito weighs 2.5mg. There are 1000 milligrams to a gram (just a reminder). If we have an 8g bat exclusively eating 2.5mg mosquitoes nightly and requiring a conservative 65% of its body weight to sustain it, we come up with a mosquito consumption of 2080 mosquitoes per night. Simultaneously, this also disproves the “bat flying into your hair” theory. Requiring a nightly quota of 2000 mosquitoes, it’s not that they don’t want to fly into your hair, it’s just that they really don’t have the time.Potentially, a Cape Serotine Bat can consume approximately 2000 mosquitoes per night. Cape Serotine Bats roost in families of between 15 - 20 individuals. That is a theoretical mosquito consumption of roughly 30 000 - 40 000 mosquitoes each night. That is a lot of mosquitoes! Many insectivorous bats hibernate during the winter months and re-appear in spring when insect numbers increase. Bats normally roost in caves and tree cavities, or behind the bark of dead trees. It is believed that a lack of roosting sites are a limiting factor within both urban and agricultural landscapes, and it is for this reason that EcoSolutions currently manages and monitors over 200 bat hotels on citrus farms in the Western and Eastern Cape, and almost 100 bat hotels on macadamia farms in the Limpopo Province. These projects are part of a Masters dissertation on the efficacy of bats in controlling the False Codling Moth, an agricultural pest in South Africa that has been estimated to cost SA fruit growers between R300 - 500 million annually. Another fascinating thing about the Cape Serotine Bat is that, along with the Yellow House Bat (Scotophilus dinganii) they will readily utilise bat houses) and are actually our most common bat box occupant.Ecosolutions post and install bat boxes nationally. These boxes come with full installation instructions and make great gifts for any occasion. To order a bat box Bats are a wonderful and vital environmental asset and should be catered for in every environmentally friendly home. Now is the ideal time to install a bat box in your garden, as bats will soon be coming out of hibernation and will be looking for new roost sites.

Pine Trees(E.Mey.) Skeels Pines are conifer trees in the genus Pinus, in the family Pinaceae. They are the only genus in the subfamily Pinoideae conifer trees in the genus Pinus, in the family Pinaceae. They are the only genus in the subfamily Pinoideae. Scientific name: Pinus / Rank: Genus / Higher classification: Pinaceae / Lower classifications: Pinus, Strobus, Ducampopinus.

Tree of the Month

Pines are one of the most recognizable trees on the planet. Closely associated with Christmas and other festive holidays around the world, these majestic and fragrant trees from the Pinus genus, are real crowd pleasers. Fortunately, they are also easy to plant and maintain, which makes them a popular pick for professional landscapers and homeowners alike.

Ref: www.wikipeida.org

Appearance of the Tree

Pine NeedlesBotanists estimate that there are close to 125 species of Pines worldwide. Their height ranges from 45 to 135 feet with some Ponderosa Pines exceeding 250 feet. Despite their differences in height, Pine trees share a host of common characteristics that make up their familiar appearance:

Needles: Instead of traditional leaves, Pine trees feature needles that are thin and pointed. Individual needles range in length from one inch to up to six inches. The needles typically grow in clusters and are traditionally dark green in colour, though some trees feature green needles with a light blue tint. Pine trees are evergreens which mean their needles don't change colour in a different season and don't shed in the winter months.

Bark: One of the ways you can decipher the age of a Pine tree is to look at its bark. A young Pine has a smooth, greenish-brown bark, while older trees feature thick, dark brown bark covered with cracks and crevices. The one exception is the Scotch Pine with bark that turns reddish-brown as it ages.

Cones You won't find fruit growing on Pine trees. Rather, the towering trees produce cones that contain seeds. The scaly cones are used throughout the world as decorations in wreaths, centrepieces and floral arrangements.

Most Pines live between 100 and 1,000 years, though some have survived to nearly 5,000 years old. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine is recognized as the world's oldest living organism having lived to roughly 4,600 years old.
