My Life by Jane Heath

I was born in Robeson County, North Carolina, in the heart of Lumbee country. Both my parents are Lumbee Indians. By

the time I was 2 years old, I was living in Westland, Michigan, with my parents and four brothers. I grew up there. Dad worked in the steel mills in Detroit, and Mom resumed her teaching career once my youngest brother entered kindergarten.

From as far back as I can remember I knew I wanted to be a teacher like Mom. She taught first grade, but I knew I did not want to do that. When I was in the 11th grade, I had an awe-some English teacher who made grammar understandable to me for the first time. That’s when I knew I wanted to teach English to 11th graders. I did that for 6 years. After Sherry was born, I stayed home for 8 years and was blessed with two more chil-dren, April and Shannon. When I went back to teaching, the demands of high school English were too great for me to be a good teacher and a good mother. I was going to step down again and wait until my children were more independent when Randy Vaughan, who was an assistant superintendent, persuad-ed me to fill an 8th grade English opening at the middle school. I am thankful that God used Randy to set me on a path that I have never regretted traveling. I was blessed to be able to teach my three children there, and the last time I counted there are 12 or 14 members of our congregation that I taught either in high school or middle school. My middle school tenure lasted 26 years, and I loved every year of it, not necessarily every day but certainly every year. Every year with the new batch of students came new challenges and blessings.

I attended Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti, Michigan, my freshman year. I was very happy there, but God had a better place for me and sent me to Pembroke State Col-lege (PSC) which was a predominately Native American col-lege. Today, it is part of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP). When I was at EMU, I lived in a dorm with several hundred other girls. While at PSC, I was in a dorm with 15 girls. I thought, “God, what are you doing? I do not like be-ing out here in the middle of nowhere with people who talk fun-ny.” What did I know? I was to meet my future husband at Pembroke but not until the second semester of my senior year. By that time I had fallen in love with the slower pace of the South and the genuineness of the people.

Two years later in January 1966, Mike and I were married. I taught English at the Indian high school in Pembroke while Mike was majoring in math and history. He had transferred from the University of North Carolina to play basketball for Pembroke and was posthumously inducted into the UNCP Hall of Fame for his athleticism in basketball. I started work on my graduate degree when I graduated in 1964 and was in Boone, NC, for a year before coming back to Pembroke to teach. When

Mike graduated in 1967, I still needed two classes to complete my Master’s in English. Mike headed to King George in June and I followed in August after completing my coursework. He was hired as a mathematician on the base in Dahlgren, and I began my King George teaching career at the old school. We visited several local churches, but God chose Shiloh for us, and we joined in 1968 a few months after Sherry was born.

Sherry is married to Nelson Mills and has followed in the foot-steps of her father being a mathematician on the base. She gave me my first and third grandchildren. Garrett is 19 and in his sec-ond year at Virginia Tech. He is following in his father’s foot-steps in the school of engineering. Noah is 17 and a senior in high school. He has played baseball since he was 7 years old and is a left-handed pitcher for the Foxes. He made second team all-conference this year. He is built like Mike was and inherited his athletic ability. April is my second child and has one son, Dalton. He is number seven in the grandchildren line-up. I lived in West Virginia for a year and took care of him the first year of his life. April and Dalton live in Chesterfield where she has a home office and is a personal injury claims rep for Nationwide Insurance. Both daughters graduated from the University of Mary Washing-ton in Fredericksburg. My son Shannon lives in New Kent, Vir-ginia. He and wife Suzi have blessed me with five grandchildren. Shannon works for Fed Ex and Suzi runs a daycare out of their home. Sierra is 18 and graduated with honors this year. She wants to follow in my footsteps and be a teacher. She will attend Nelson Community College in Williamsburg this fall. Maddy is 15 and will be a sophomore. She excels in field hockey and soccer for her high school teams. Brayden, my third grandson, is 11 and going into 7th grade. He also inherited the athletic gene and is a skilled basketball and year-round baseball player. Carter is nine and headed for 4th grade. He is a good student and enjoys staying with me for Bible School week each year. Paisley, my last grand-child, is the one we have been praying for all her life. She is 5 years old now and continues to get infusions every other week to treat her Diamond Blackfan Anemia, an incurable blood disorder. She is such a little trooper. I thank God for all my grandchildren and how He made them special in every way and what a blessing they are to me.

Another blessing I am thankful for is the opportunity I have been given to teach our Sunday School class and to share that privilege with Joe Parker. When our former teacher announced she had accepted a new position teaching the middle school class, I felt a nudge to step in; but I wasn’t sure I was being called to do it. All of my former pupils were 18 and under. After much prayer and encouragement from different ones, I did feel like it was something God wanted me to do.

Music News By Barbara Perry

The summer has really flown by and now we are heading into another school year, another fall and another wonderful year at Shiloh. Lots has happened over the summer with our music ministry, some of it great and some sad. We had another glorious year at music camp, we were spiritually revived at Revival and we had to say goodbye to our long time accom-panist, Natasha Smoot. Natasha was an integral part of our music ministry for 6 year and it is sad to see her go, but we wish her well as she heads to her hometown to be with her parents and start a new ministry at a church on the Eastern Shore.

With Natasha leaving, we are welcoming a tem-porary accompanist, Barbara Powell from the Freder-icksburg area. Yes, there will be two Barbara's now!! Barbara will play for us during September and October while we continue our search for a full time accompanist. Please continue praying for our music ministry as we look for the right fit.

Thank you to my Shiloh family for the lovely gift I received to celebrate my 5-year anniversary as Shi-loh’s Music Minister. You all are a wonderful church family.

Sunday School By Gail Davis

Reading an article in Crosswalk.com, I came across a passage that I found meaningful. "His peace is powerful enough to calm any fears, worries or anxieties" if you trust in Him. Then I thought, 'why would you trust someone you don't know?' Of course that led to thoughts of how I learned about Jesus in early years of Sunday School and continue to learn today as I continue to participate in Bible study and fellowship in a class at Shiloh. The foun-dation was laid in the love of nursery/toddler teach-ers and has been built on as I progressed through childhood, teen and adult Bible study. The fellow-ship of my Christian friends has been a huge influ-ence in my life. I thank God for the trust I now have in Him, established through the relationships I have with and through Him. If you want a closer relation-ship with Christ, come fellowship and study with us at Shiloh on Sunday mornings. Classes begin at 9:45 am.

Women of Shiloh By Brenda Hastings

News for GALS (Growing And Loving Servants) In case you haven’t heard. . . Women of Shiloh is

now called GALS. This group is open to women of all ages. We meet on the 2nd Saturday, every other month, 9:30am (unless otherwise noted).

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, Sep-tember 9 at 9:30 am. You won’t want to miss this one! Sarah Weakley from The Haven (a shelter for abused women and children) in Warsaw will be our guest speaker! She will tell us about the shelter and let us know how we can minister to her and the shelter. In the past, we have provided Bibles and snacks for resi-dents of The Haven.

Designers Still Wanted! The GALS want T-shirts – so we need someone to

design it! If you would like to design the GALS t-shirt, please submit your idea by September 3 to Bren-da Hastings or Lee Lynn Crowell. Then, we’ll decide on the winning logo at our September 9th meeting.

Also – we plan to hand out shopping bags at the 3 area Food Lions in the fall. These bags will advertise Jesus’ love for people. We will have Shiloh infor-mation on a sheet included in the bag. Anybody want-ing to design a logo for the bag, please contact us! The winning design will receive a gift card from Sheetz!! This is also due to Brenda Hastings and/or Lee Lynn Crowell by September 3rd.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF THE GALS GROUP TO PARTICIPATE!!!!!

Happy designing! Summer 2018 Mission Trip

Continue to pray about our 2018 Mission Trip now! We are planning to go to Bland County, VA, and help at the Bland Ministry Center. We will announce the trip dates as soon as they become available to us.

Next Women’s Book/Bible Study The next Women’s Book/Bible Study will be Brave

Enough: Getting Over Our Fears, Flaws, and Failures to Live Bold and Free. This is the second book written by Nicole Unice. We studied her first book, She’s Got Issues this past spring.

“Bravery doesn’t have to mean cliff diving out of your comfort zone. Life is about being brave enough ―for yourself, for God, for your tasks, and for your calling―right where He’s placed you. A brave-enough life is one lived fully and confidently, with your shoul-ders relaxed and free from the weight of responsibility and the burden of trying too hard.”

This will be an 8 week study. We will begin our study on Sunday, September 17 at 5:15 pm in room 201 (next to the church office). All women are invited

to attend!! The books are $10 each. Contact Brenda Hastings, 540-498-0903, with any questions.
