Dear students,

Just like you, at one point in my life, I wanted to obtain an MBA degree. After graduating from one of the world’s top business schools, I was able to build the largest management school in Japan from scratch.

the reason for my success was not only because of the many business skills I obtained during my studies, nor my expanded network of classmates, professors and the industry leaders I met, but the simple fact I had a personal mission in life.

When you have a personal mission in your life, nothing is impossible. this powerful idea is central to GLOBIS’ success. Armed with a clear vision, you too can build successful companies and reshape society for the better.

that is exactly why I created the Graduate School of Management, GLOBIS University.

At GLOBIS we help future leaders define a strong personal mission and develop the skills and personal network to achieve it.

where most western business schools only teach management theory, we focus on developing entrepreneurial skills and human capacity.

GLOBIS would like to inspire you to become visionary leaders who create and innovate societies. If you’re looking to build global brands that will lead the next century and need to learn from the best, you’ve come to the right place.

I look forward to welcoming many future ‘visionary leaders’ who are passionate about developing their skills, their personal network and their personal mission at our central tokyo campus.

What Is GLOBIS?A start-up venture that became a world-class educational institution.

The Birth of a Business School

In 1992, at the age of 30, entrepreneur yoshito hori

created “GLOBIS” from scratch (combining the words

‘global’ and ‘business’), largely inspired by harvard

Business School’s MBA program—which he had

graduated from a year earlier. the school found life

in dean hori’s central tokyo apartment, with dean

hori as the sole employee. After sending letters to

hBS alumni in Japan—and inviting them to teach at

the newly formed GLOBIS School of Management—

dean hori managed to assemble a team from his

personal network and began to instruct the first

pioneering class of 20 students, using the famous

“case method.” today, GLOBIS is an expanding

educational institution and has instructed thousands

of international business professionals.

The Highest Standards of Management Education

the first GLOBIS students were knowledge-hungry

individuals who funded their studies with their

own money and therefore demanded the best: top-

quality education from world-class instructors.

GLOBIS demands the highest standards from all

faculty members, requiring instructors to have

MBAs or other masters degrees, real-world business

experience and the ability to teach using the case

method—rather than the traditional lecture style. this

unique approach to business education created a

surge in applications, prompting GLOBIS to build two

more campuses in the cities of Osaka and nagoya.

The Largest Business School in Japan

GLOBIS’ success and rapid growth was driven by

dean hori’s intense energy and by word of mouth

following his revolutionary approach to education.

the exponential growth GLOBIS experienced secured

its place as the largest management school in Japan,

bringing it one step closer to its ultimate goal of

becoming Asia’s top business school.

Meeting the Future Challenges of Global Business

As GLOBIS continued to expand, it attracted ever-

increasing numbers of students from across the world.

After the successful launch of GLOBIS’ part-time

english MBA program in 2009, dean hori decided to

create a brand new, full-time MBA program in 2012—

also taught entirely in english.

we welcome you to celebrate this milestone in

GLOBIS’ history, by joining one of our MBA programs

and becoming one of the many ‘visionary leaders who

create and innovate societies.’

Kokorozashi – discover your personal mission

We believe that the personal mission you will develop at GLOBIS will be your compass throughout your MBA journey and your life after that.

GLOBIS exists to educate people who are ambitious—

not for self-aggrandizing purposes, but for creating

positive changes in society. this is why GLOBIS puts

particular emphasis on the development of its students’

Kokorozashi.

GLOBIS attracts people who are dedicated to improving

themselves and eager to learn, and has been doing so

since the very first class conducted 2 decades ago.

The Japanese term ‘Kokorozashi’ is

interpreted by GLOBIS as having a personal

mission, the very core of a leader’s strength.

What You Will Gain from Studying at GLOBISGLOBIS is more than a business school. The network of people you will meet here, the invaluable skills you will obtain and the personal mission you will be encouraged to shape will help you become a ‘visionary leader who creates and innovates societies.’

Personal Missionduring your studies at GLOBIS, you will be given

ample opportunities to think deeply about your own

personal mission and discover what you are truly

passionate about. By developing this inner drive, you

will be able to forge a personal network and utilize

the many skills you will gain during your studies.

Personal Networkthe contacts and friendships you make at GLOBIS

may change your life. A diverse mix of students,

a truly global faculty and associations with top

business leaders will help start you on your path to

success. GLOBIS peers, alumni and lecturers may

become your future business partners, investors

or mentors—it all comes down to how much effort

you put into expanding your personal network. try

meeting as many people as possible during your

studies at GLOBIS, as your network of contacts will

be an essential tool in supporting your mission and

success in life.

Business & Conceptual SkillsGLOBIS students do not just learn hard business

skills such as accounting, finance and marketing—

they also study the soft skills needed to innovate and

create value in a globalized world. Communication,

negotiation, critical thinking and management

philosophy are just a few of the many topics you will

cover during your studies at GLOBIS, all of which will

help contribute to your personal growth.

The GLOBIS Challenge“Developing Your Personal Mission”At GLOBIS, students are challenged to think deeply about their own personal mission in life and to apply their passion to create and innovate.

Leadership Development WorkshopGLOBIS students use the results of a 360-degree

evaluation, the GLOBIS Leadership Skill Survey,

filled in by ten evaluators from their own workplaces

(including superiors, peers and subordinates), to

diagnose their current strengths and weaknesses. Stu-

dents are then given recommendations for their daily

skill development by defining how their ideal lead-

ers perform and considering how they can gain the

skills to become such leaders.

Keiei DojoUnlike any course taught at conventional business

schools, Keiei Dojo is a course where students are

asked to study books and discuss their findings with

classmates. the books that students are asked to read

in Keiei Dojo are on topics that have had an impact on

the lecturer teaching the course. through lively dis-

cussion, students find out what the implications are

for becoming leaders, what they may be missing, and

where they may need to challenge themselves.

Dean’s Sessionthe dean’s Session gives students the opportunity

to reflect upon their personal mission and on how

to contribute as ‘visionary leaders who create and

innovate societies’ by having a direct Q&A session

with dean hori. the dean will discuss in detail the

challenges he encountered as an entrepreneur,

leader and venture capitalist, and how he was able

to overcome them. Students are also able to ask

questions about dean hori’s own vision and future

plans for business development and the GLOBIS

organization.

Reflection Sessionthe purpose of the reflection session is to help

students objectively look at their current weaknesses,

their personal mission, and to construct a plan for their

remaining studies at GLOBIS. the reflection session

is unique to GLOBIS and is regarded as an essential

tool to monitor the growth of our students and to help

them revise and update their ultimate goal in life.

“I am committed to innovation and creating a nigerian society that can

lead development in Africa. In order to transform the lives of my people,

I need to exhibit excellent leadership and discover what I should do

to complete my personal mission. GLOBIS is able to empower me, by

arming me with quality leadership skills necessary to create a positive

change in the world and my country. GLOBIS made me realize that with

a personal mission in life, nothing is impossible.”

Page 10: GLOBIS MBA

The GLOBIS Difference “Entrepreneurial Spirit”As GLOBIS was founded as a start-up venture, an entrepreneurial spirit is in our DNA. This spirit is shared by our faculty and staff, and is present throughout our curriculum.

Entrepreneurial CoursesIn the Entrepreneurial Leadership course, taught by

dean hori himself, students have the opportunity

to think and feel what leaders would actually do

when they are in an entrepreneurial setting or in

a corporate reorganization setting. By looking at

case studies, written reports and interviews with

representative Japanese and global entrepreneurs,

students are able to grasp the essentials of what it

takes to become entrepreneurial leaders.

In the Venture Strategy course, students learn how

to formulate strategies specific to the establishment

of start-up businesses, as well as how to discover

entrepreneurial opportunities and plot a growth

strategy. Students will hear lectures from successful

entrepreneurs and experienced venture capitalists

who share methods of establishing business models

based on their own experiences.

established using the accumulated knowledge

of GLOBIS Capital Partners, the Venture Capital

and Finance course is designed for current and

future entrepreneurs, those currently involved in

an entrepreneurial venture and those interested

in extending their knowledge of finance to the

entrepreneurial area. the course will also be of

benefit to many others, including those hoping to

manage entrepreneurial ventures and those with an

interest in the financial issues peculiar to start-ups.

Faculty with Venture-experienceMany of our lecturers are seasoned entrepreneurs

or have actual experiences as venture capitalists,

having established promising businesses in Japan

and around the world. the unique mix of venture

courses, start-up experts and a venture spirit within

the school, makes GLOBIS the ideal environment to

plan your future entrepreneurial endeavours.

10 GLOBIS MBA

“In my class Entrepreneurial Leadership, students learn in depth about the leaders and change agents of today and yesterday. Besides my class, students will have many more opportunities to grow as leaders at GLOBIS.”

“I’ve always wanted to start my own company. GLOBIS specializes in

entrepreneurship and you really feel that everyone shares this venture

spirit. Learning from one of Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs is

truly inspiring. It was the biggest reason for me to join GLOBIS.”

Page 12: GLOBIS MBA

The GLOBIS Advantage “Practical Application”Our courses cut to the heart of business issues, allowing you to immediately apply what you learn in real life. Our curriculum is highly practical and is taught by seasoned business professionals.

Business Professionals Sharing Industry ExperiencesGLOBIS lecturers are chosen for their professional

backgrounds and excellent facilitation skills. Our

instructors share the challenges and issues they have

overcome in their professional lives, ensuring the

GLOBIS curriculum is firmly grounded in the reality

of contemporary business.

We Train Blue-chip Companies and Incorporate the Latest Industry InsightsGLOBIS uses the curriculum to educate hundreds

of Japan’s largest companies. these blue-chip

firms truly appreciate the practicality of the GLOBIS

curriculum and in turn provide us with the latest

market information regarding their respective

industries and current business challenges.

Creating Knowledge by Developing the Companies of TomorrowGLOBIS helps venture companies grow into

the market leaders of tomorrow. As we actively

participate in the management of these companies,

we gain practical knowledge about start-up situations

and utilize that newly gained knowledge in our

curriculum.

The Case Method Lets You Enter Real Business SituationsCase studies allow students to experience business

situations by putting themselves in the shoes of

management, facing business challenges that

occurred in real life. GLOBIS uses case studies from

the world’s most prominent business schools and

produces case studies focusing on Japanese and

Asian companies.

“As a Senior Manager of a commercial bank in the Philippines, I find the

case method we use in the MBA Program at GLOBIS extremely useful

and practical. Cracking the cases enables me to step into the shoes of

business leaders and gain deeper understanding of their actions. Guided

by lecturers who are also business practitioners, I learn fresh perspectives

and different approaches from a diverse set of international classmates.”

Beyond a Business SchoolGLOBIS is more than a Business School. GLOBIS supports the development of human, capital and knowledge resources through its venture capital arm, corporate training programs, and publications.

Venture CapitalGLOBIS Capital Partners is a Japanese venture

capital firm established as a joint venture between

GLOBIS and Apax Partners, actively developing

companies that reside in the technology, retail and

healthcare sectors. GLOBIS has invested in over 30

companies with its ‘GLOBIS Incubation’ and ‘Apax

GLOBIS Japan’ funds. the GLOBIS Incubation Fund

was first established in 1996. Many of GLOBIS’

faculty actively participate in the management of the

venture companies we have invested in and add their

experiences and findings to our curriculum. Being at

the forefront of these start-up companies gives us

unique know-how that we share with students eager

to learn about the exciting world of ventures.

Corporate Trainingwe entered the corporate training sector after

some of our students who were highly impressed

by our courses recommended GLOBIS to the

human resources departments of their companies.

GLOBIS Organizational Learning aimed to deliver

customized programs to each client with tailor-

made curricula and case studies that we closely

related to the clients interests and needs. this

approach was radically different from programs

offered by conventional training companies, most of

which sold standard off-the-shelf training packages.

Such innovative methods helped attract a stream

of clients, allowing GLOBIS’ corporate training to

become a new stand-alone business unit.

In 2009, GLOBIS provided training programs to more

than 250 companies, with about 20,000 corporate

managers and employees attending our sessions

each year. through customized corporate programs,

we learn about the actual challenges companies

are dealing with and we actively participate in

formulating viable solutions to their problems.

the knowledge acquired through this process is

then converted back into teaching materials—thus

creating a virtuous circle between corporate training

and our school.

Publicationsto disseminate our management wisdom, GLOBIS

decided to publish a 13-volume “GLOBIS MBA”

series, drawing upon our accumulated business

expertise. the books gained enormous popularity

due to their practicality and unique MBA insights,

with over 1.3 million copies sold in Japan. the

GLOBIS brand is now recognized by millions of

business people and has been a synonym for

practicality and quality for the last two decades.
